In 1992 local residents Allison McIntrye and Barry Reynolds began their venture operating the Mount Morgan Hot Bread Shop. Today, more than two decades on and literally millions of pies later – the pair have celebrated the 21st birthday of the much loved local business. Staff and members of the community joined in on the celebrations, held last Thursday (October 31st). See page 3 for full story. Members of the Hot Bread Shop team recently marked 21 years of business, with a Halloween themed birthday celebration in store. This week we must say goodbye to the Golden Mount Carriage Crafts, which recently closed its doors at the Railway Complex. After nearly 25 enjoyable years of meeting tourists, new residents to town and faithful local supporters, the time has come to reluctantly leave our carriages. We, the Golden Mount Carriage Crafts group, started with 11 members who produced the locally made crafts for sale and one railway carriage. We operated from the Railway Platform once a month on Railway Market day. Eventually we managed to be located in a permanent position where we remained for nearly 20 years. As we became better known and the tourists were visiting more frequently, we realised we needed more space to display our crafts. A second carriage was purchased by the members from the Railway Department in Rockhampton. Fortunately, one of our members, an ex-railway employee was able to connect the two carriages with a connecting walkway and a ramp to the platform level for entry and exit. This second craft carriage was officially opened by David Anderson of the local ABC radio on November 6th, 1993 – the 4th birthday of the railway markets. During the time, we enjoyed waving to the Railmotor full of passengers, the carriages pulled by the Hunslett Steam Loco and also the Fairmont Trolley rides as they passed our carriages. On some occasions, when parents brought their children through the carriages, some of the children wondered why the carriages weren’t moving. For the older generation who were on a nostalgic trip back to Mount Morgan, we would often be asked questions like “How long have you lived in Mount Morgan?” and “Did you know so and so – he was a family member.” Most times someone in our group could come up with some helpful info they may not have known. We also had many enjoyable days especially during the May Day weekends, when many past residents returned to visit their families. We must pay an especial tribute to Ron and Shirley Stone and Michea Dern who were responsible for the concept of utilising obsolete railway carriages to sell craft. We hope to see the continued use of these carriages at the complex in the future.

Their award winning pies; the wide variety of sweets and pastries; the bread baked fresh each day... There are countless reasons why so many celebrate the Mount Morgan Hot Bread Shop. For owners, Barry Reynolds and Allison McIntyre, last Thursday saw 21 reasons to celebrate – when they marked the 21st year of business in the local community. The pair, together with staff of the Hot Bread Shop, marked the milestone with giveaways to unsuspecting customers throughout the day. An official party was also held at the business during the morning, which welcomed members of the community to enjoy a large cake made by the team for the special celebrations. The cake was cut by Allison, with the help of Mayor of Rockhampton Regional Council, Margaret Strelow and Deputy Mayor, Tony Williams - who made a special visit to Mount Morgan to help celebrate the bakery’s birthday (pictured right). The event marked exactly 21 years to the day since Barry and Allison first opened the doors of the popular business. “At that stage Barry had been a baker for more than twenty years,” Allison said on the commencement of their business venture. “He had his own business in the Valley in Brisbane for years, and then moved to Rockhampton near his family. All of the boys in his family are bakers and they operated about five bakeries in Rockhampton at that time. “Barry wanted to get back into business, and well, that’s how it started. Leanne and Phillip Batchelor had put the Hot Bread Shop up for sale, and we bought it.”
Allison said the changes also include some impressive increases to the business. “We started with four staff members and we now have 11. It’s great that we have been able to grow. It’s nice that you can give something to people, and they really appreciate it. I really think we have a great product.” And others certainly agree. Over the years, the Hot Bread Shop has become well known throughout the region for their pies – first making around 100 pies a day, now serving up to 600 each day. This popularity has also seen the business take out a number of awards over the years – their most recent a top ranking in Australia’s Best Bakery awards. “We don’t often enter competitions, they are a lot of hard work, but when we do we are always excited. “A few years ago we entered the competition searching for the best bakery in Australia. We were second in the State and seventh in Australia.” Although such recognitions are exciting, Allison said the overall highlight of their time in the community has been the people. “The people and customers are really good,” she said. “We meet and talk to so many people and it’s a privilege when you can give a good product to someone and they just keep coming back. “We really would like to thank the community for their great support over the years.”
The Mount Morgan Hot Bread Shop has continued to serve tasty treats and freshly baked goods ever since – operating 11 hours a day, seven days a week. For the team, last Thursday not only marked more than two decades of business in the community, but also a number of changes during that time. “We have had a lot of changes over the years,” Allison said. “When we first opened the doors, we were located toward the end of the street. We moved to our current area about 12 to 15 years ago, and since then have changed things around, moved our bakery section and opened up the seating area.”

Community commemorates Beersheba
It was October 1917, World War I. The British had launched two unsuccessful attacks on the Turkish defense, and the aim of capturing Gaza was looking very distant. With no water supplies and no time at hand, General Chauvel passes down the decision to charge Beersheba and the reserve Australian Light Horse Brigade are to make a frontal attack. Beginning with a trot, a canter, and then finally a gallop, it isn’t long before the sound of thundering hooves fills the air, heightened only by the shouts of the riders. Pounding along the desert sands, with a cloud of dust following, the Light Horse Brigade draws nearer to the Turkish Lines - whose occupants are unwearyingly waiting for the riders to dismount before they signal to “open fire”. With the thought of Beersheba’s wells in mind, the men and their steeds continue to charge; the element of surprise becoming their greatest weapon. With no time for the Turkish troops to adjust their guns, it isn’t long before their trenches are overrun – as the Light Horsemen charge toward Beersheba, and resultantly, into the pages of our history books. Ninety six years on since the Battle of Beersheba, our community has once more paid respects to those who served in the war efforts and the Light Horse charge on October 31st. Last Saturday, the 5th Light Horse Regiment Mount Morgan Troop held a ceremonial parade and service at ANZAC Park for the battle’s anniversary. The day commenced with a Light Horse parade at the Mount Morgan Showgrounds, followed by a mounted and dismounted walk through Mount Morgan for the official service at ANZAC Park. Members of the community joined the Light Horse Troop for the service, conducted by President of the Mount Morgan RSL Sub Branch, Mike Johnston and Lay Minister of the Anglican Church of Saint Mary’s, Keith Hare. The service recalled the events that made up the particular World War I efforts, and included the laying of wreaths by members of the Light Horse Troop – with a special straw wreath laid in memory of the horses and their involvement in the Beersheba Battle. Discussing the service, Secretary of the Mount Morgan Troop, Ron Stehn said it is an occasion the troop always looks to commemorate.
“Being Light Horse reenactors, we’re also students of history – and the Beersheba charge is recognised as the last successful charge of horses against another army,” Ron said. “For the men, it really was a do or die decision. There was no water left, the horses were suffering from thirst, and it was seeming impossible to overrun the Turkish troops as they were equipped with mass killing machines. “The charge was a big gamble, a totally new thing to do – brought on by desperation. But it paid off. They were expecting heavy losses but it was in fact one of the lightest casualties in the campaign. Of course it wasn’t light for those and the families of those that got hit – but they expected it to be much worse than it was. “It is seen as a very important and brave action, and it’s an important thing to commemorate each year.” Along with the commemoration, the location of the local event also holds great significance for those involved in the annual service. “ANZAC Park is today the resting place of one of the guns used during the battle,” President of the Mount Morgan RSL Sub Branch, Mike Johnston said. “The gun was one of three captured during the battle and brought back to Australia,” he said. Mr Johnston said this year’s Beersheba ceremony was the first since the weapon’s restoration – renewed through a project of the RSL last year. “We are very lucky to have it on display and in such a good condition as it is.” “It is a light field gun and is set up as a fort gun, which is how it was used in Beersheba.” Pictured below: members of the 5th Light Horse Regiment Mount Morgan Troop commemorate Beersheba Day with a service at ANZAC Park on October 26.

The Night Moves Youth Group coordinated their annual Trick or Treat trek around Mount Morgan for Halloween last week, and were joined by an impressive number of locals for the occasion. Each participant certainly got into the “spirit” of things and donned some very creepy and creative costumes. The trick-or-treaters convened in Morgan Street in the early evening, before officially taking to the streets of the local neighbourhood in hope of scoring some sweets. Pictured front page: Madison and Jessica.

A variety of entertainment 1st of November marked Mt Morgan State High Schools’ 6th Annual Variety Night. The night was abuzz as the crowd poured in, filling the chairs and spilling onto the surrounding grass and retaining walls. Students and ex-students had been preparing dance, song, and drama pieces for several weeks and were anxious to share them with their school peers and the wider community. Whilst nervous, students took on their respective pieces with gusto and the heartening and loud support of the audience became one of the highlights of the night. The acts featured many debut performances from students who we had previously not heard from and whom ensure that the Variety Night will have a large pool of talent to seek out in its future years.
The list of acts included: Anna Craven/ Sabrina Stephen- Cup Song, Moniqua Spanner/ Chynna Williams- Take a Bow, Brodie Tremaine/ Cleavyn Cowl- Stand-up comedy act, Sammy Snarr- Traveling Soldier, Natasha Wyvill- Fix You, Roeshelle Mitchell/ Taliah Reid/ Jewel DolanDance number, Chad Robinson- Marry Me, Matthew Lodewikus- Comedy Skit, Chynna Williams- Titanium, Beau Munday- Designated Drinker, Moniqua SpannerUntouchable, Anna Craven/ Brodie Tremaine- Comedy performance, Moniqua Spanner- Only Exception, Miss Kahler- Farewell, Isaac Fox- California Girls, Natasha Wyvill/ Ashlee Wyvill/ Isaac Fox - Pony. As a follow on from the details included in Issue 20 of the Argus, the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection have advised that no further crocodile sightings at the Mount Morgan dam have been reported. Two crocodile sightings were reported to EHP earlier last month, which resulted in an inspection of the Dam and the introduction of standard crocodile sighting warning signs at the area. The crocodile sighting signs have been removed, following the standard seven day warning period. EHP have advised that wildlife rangers will continue to monitor the Mount Morgan Dam. Crocodile sightings can be reported to EHP on 1300 130 372 and all crocodile reports received are investigated by the department. Mt Morgan Rail Bridge On Monday 28 October, Mount Morgan residents were invited to attend a town meeting regarding the Mount Morgan Railway Bridge. Councillor Cherie Rutherford would like to thank all those who attended for their thoughts and feedback. "We really wanted to let the community know the state of the Railway Bridge and the findings from an independent engineering company, who strongly believe the bridge is unsafe, structurally unsound and at a great risk of falling apart at any moment," Cr Rutherford said. "We'll take the engineers report to Continuing Council on 13 November where we'll be recommending Council votes to demolish it. "It's not something that either Council or the Mount Morgan community ever wants to hear. Unfortunately, due to the age of the wooden bridge, it having severe flood damage earlier this year, and a fire previous to that, has made it very unstable. "I really appreciated the discussions that took place and I'd like to thank the community members who came along, asked questions, listened and gave us some feedback on managing Mount Morgan's community assets." BSA-licensed contractors must state their name and BSA licence number in all advertisements for building work. Unlicensed contractors must state in their advertisements the value of work they can legally perform without a BSA licence which will never be more than $3,300. Electricians and earthmovers are exempt from these requirements. From your State MP Queensland, It’s time to ‘Get Ready’ Storm and Cyclone season is almost upon us and it’s time for all Queensland residents to get ready for this summer’s forces of nature. On any given day, all Queenslanders could be faced with the threat of storm, cyclone or even bushfires, but it’s ultimately up to us how we weather the storm and prepare ourselves. It’s up to everyone to ensure nobody is caught off guard by preparing our homes and families so emergency crews can be directed where they will do the most good. More than half of Queensland home insurance claims last year were storm related and much of this damage could have been avoided with some simple maintenance around the home. While we cannot control the weather, we can prepare our homes at this time of the year and it could save a lot of the heartache that comes with water damage. For further information and resources on how to prepare for disaster visit - http://www.stormwise.com.au/ New website – Plan for Life A new, “one stop shop” website will help Queenslanders take control of their lives and plan for the future. The Planning for Life portal provides information on wills, enduring powers of attorney and advance health care directives. The site will also allow people to contact the Public Trustee or the Adult Guardian with questions about decisions relating to health and finances. Safety at Road Works With unprecedented road works underway across Central Queensland and a road reconstruction program which will continue into 2014, motorists are urged to be considerate, drive with caution and obey the road works signage. Almost 700 people are working right across the region to get the job done and the safety of these people is critical. Driver behaviour is a key element in seeing construction workers, plant operators and traffic controllers go home safely each shift. Motorists are urged to be patient, drive to the changed conditions and obey the road rules while these important road reconstructions works are carried out.

Our Garage Sale / Auction:
On Sunday, the 27th of October, the Golden Mount Festival Committee held a Garage Sale / Auction in aim of raising funds for the proposed 2014 rodeo. We are very pleased to announce that this was a great success, with a great number of goods donated for the event and tremendous support by the community. First of all, we were overwhelmed by the generosity of the residents and town’s people of Mount Morgan. We thank you with all our hearts, for without your support the garage sale/ auction would not have been the success that it was. Thank you. We also would like to thank Greg Mathers and a small band of Golden Mount Festival members for their flexibility and willingness in transporting the goods to and from the School of Arts and other venues for storage at a moment’s notice. More importantly, it was all completed within the allotted time frame. A great effort by you all, and we thank you all. We would also like to thank Barbara Gould for donating the 5 kilograms of prawns used on the day for a raffle prize. This was won, with ticket number, F39 by L. Jansen. Congratulations! We would also like to thank John Burk and his grandson for delivering advertising material in connection with the event free of charge. A big thank you to you both. Pictured top right: a bird’s eye view of Sunday’s auction. Pictured right: Among the crowd was local lad Hunter Passey, who (with mum’s help) bid on a set of wheels to take home.
Continued raffles at the Gracemere Sale Yards:
After one week’s absence, we again held a raffle at the Gracemere Sale Yards with a combined price drawn on the day of a $20 Glenmore Seafood voucher and a $10 Mount Morgan and Gracemere Hardware voucher. This was won again by Robbie at the on sight café with ticket number F94. This is the third time in a row the girls in the café have won.

This issue’s Visitor View has kindly been sent in by Townsville resident, Mr Kyle MacLeod, following a recent trip to the local area. Kyle is the Secretary of the National Servicemen’s Association of Australia, Townsville Branch and visited Mount Morgan with a number of NSAA branch members when they were in the region for a conference. A very big thanks to Kyle for sharing these details with us.
On the 23rd of October, 30 of our members had a day trip to Rockhampton where we had a delicious morning tea provided by Maryanne and staff at The Botanic Gardens. After a stroll around the gardens and a talk on the history of the gardens by Mark the tour guide, we then made our way to The Cambridge Hotel for a buffet lunch.
I can say that the highlight of our time in the area would probably have been the trip to Mount Morgan.
After lunch some went for a walk along the riverbank and some tried their luck at the pokies.
Our journey for the area started when John, of TMC Tours, picked us up in Rockhampton. Along the travels, John pointed out certain landmarks and also a few details on the Railway west of Rockhampton. There were 4 former QR employees aboard the bus, plus one from NSW Railway and many conversations along the way took place on railway topics- John, being a former QR member himself.
On the way home, we took the road past the Wool Wash as it has been quite some time since a lot of our members had been around that way.
During our tour around Mount Morgan, we made a stop at ANZAC Park. We met local resident Mike Johnston, who was waiting to meet up with us old Nashos. Mike gave a very interesting talk on the history of the two field guns mounted there and the group’s continued plans for the park.
The raffle, a voucher from The Golden Bite, was won by Eva Turner. This will be our last bus trip for the year. Pictured: Members of the Dee River Oldies take a stroll and enjoy morning tea at the Gardens. Photo supplied.
After our meet, we commenced the official tour, which John’s daughter Heike conducted. Many thanks goes to Heike- who did a magnificent commentary, and right off the cuff. She has a wealth of knowledge of the town. After admiring the old historical buildings, it was time for lunch at the Leichhardt Hotel. We all enjoyed an excellent meal there. Our next stop was the Historical Museum in town. We were all impressed with the amount of items and history on display. It brought back a lot of memories for us oldies. As usual I was last to board the bus as I get engrossed in history. After a little more sightseeing and stop-offs, we headed to the Railway Museum. Some of us watched a Video in an old Camp Wagon on the History of the old ‘Rack’ Railway. Some took a ride up the yard on a restored motorised section car and some went on the tour of the old Ganger’s Trolley Shed where we learned what the old equipment was used for… Hard yaaka in those days! We arrived back at accommodation area in Rockhampton in the afternoon after a very enjoyable day. Although a bit footsore, we all were very pleased about the day that John helped us carry out as most of us had not been there before. We found so much history in the town.

Mountain Mick’s Chilli Beef & Corn
Forward Thinking A poem by Frank Clark The venue has not been chosen but my mind and pen will move I bet With concentration and imagination the pen will paint a picture of a trip that has not started yet I can paint a backyard fence but not a mural, I am a bit dense By using brainpower for an hour my pen may make sketch that makes sense Use your mind and words come and combine To trace a journey in time on track along a line At any age with mind usage the pen is guided along a page I won’t get sidetracked, keep my mind on track One may gain the knack even in old age
This is my take on the Mexican classic of Chilli - which as we know, many Mexicans love and it also includes one of the staple foods of the Americas for thousands of years- Corn, which is also called maize. So I hope you give it a go - it’s not that hot.
Shopping list: • 500g beef mince • 2 tbsp oil (olive or veg) • 2 large brown onions • 1 large chilli • 1 tbsp Cayenne pepper • 3 tbsp sweet paparika • 2 tbsp cumin • 1 tbsp coriander • ¼ teasp black pepper • ¼ teasp salt • 440g tin of corn kernels with the juice • 1 heaped teasp of crushed garlic • 2 tbsp tomato paste • 680g Passata sauce Method: Brown the onions in the oil, you need a lot of colour on the onions. Now add the beef mince and cook for 5 minutes stirring constantly. Next, add the chilli and garlic and stir together for a minute or so. Now we add all the spices and keep on stirring for 3 minutes. After this, add in the tomato paste and cook out the paste for 5 minutes. Now add the Passata sauce and corn with its juice and bring to the boil. Once boiling, turn down the heat and simmer for 25 to 35 minutes stirring every so often until the sauce reduces. Serve with either rice, pasta, corn chips or even on toast or tortilla. It’s a hearty and healthy breakfast, lunch or dinner. Please enjoy this as much as I have bringing it together for you all.
