It is amazing how lovely the flowering trees are now in full bloom around our town. With such dry conditions for the past six months or so, the beauty they display is really stunning. Firstly we have the outstanding Jacaranda with its blue/ lilac flowers (pictured below) that when they fall a glorious carpet overlays the street or ground. It certainly is a tree of much beauty. The Jacaranda is native to places like Central and South America, Cuba and Bahamas Islands. However, it is planted widely in Asia and many places around the world including Australia. Pretoria, in South Africa, is popularly known as “The Jacaranda city” due to the enormous number of trees that line streets and are grown in parks. Grafton, in NSW planted numerous trees years ago and in 1935 had its first Jacaranda Festival which is now well known and is an annual attraction for the city. Secondly, we have the Poinciana Tree which is described as having a red/vermillion/orange/yellow flower and with bright green foliage makes it a striking picture. It is endemic to Madagascar but has been introduced to tropical and sub-tropical regions worldwide. In English speaking countries it is often called the Royal Poinciana or the Flamboyant but is known by many other names in other countries. It is grown in many parts of Queensland but can also be seen in places like Parramatta and some Sydney suburbs. The city of Tainan in Southern China is known as the City Tree and the National University in Tainan has the Royal Poinciana on its emblem. The Poinciana is a beautiful vibrant coloured vision. Lastly, it is the Frangipani Tree which like the Jacaranda was native to Central and South America, Mexico and the Caribbean but now of course is found worldwide in tropical and sub-tropical areas. There are about seven or eight species of the tree and blooms in many colours. Yellow, Pink and white are our main colours. It does have an irritant in the sap and contact with the eyes can cause an irritation. It is widely recognised within Indonesia where the Balinese culture had a great love for the tree. Often it has many uses in romantic situations and sea side festivals of joy but sometimes with sadness with the passing of a loved one. In Mount Morgan nature gives us so much beauty to enjoy, surely we must do our bit to assist in this lovely picture. Our part is easy, just - THINK CLEAN – BE TIDY or why not plant a tree for future generations to enjoy.

Mount Morgan’s much loved School of Arts is now home to a brand new stage curtain. A stunning black velour curtain was installed in the Hall last fortnight, and has replaced the worn curtains previously being utilised. Complete with a cord drawn runner, the customised drapes fully cloak the stage and run on a track 13 metres wide, with a 6 metre drop. The Hall’s exciting new addition has been a joint venture between Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Incorporated (MMPAD) and the local community and has been achieved through sponsorship by both local and regional organisations. MMPAD saw the Hall open for the afternoon last Tuesday, and welcomed members of the community to meet the sponsors of the project and also see the Hall’s latest addition up close. “The curtain looks very impressive,” President of MMPAD, John Steinberger said on the afternoon. “There’s been a lot of positive comments about it already and it’s been great to hear some of these this afternoon,” John said. “A big thanks must go to the sponsors of this project and to all involved.” The curtain, including its manufacture and installation is totalled at $6,500 and has been sponsored by Stanwell Power Station, Rockhampton Regional Council, the Rotary Club of Mount Morgan and the Antediluvian Order of the Buffaloes, Mount Morgan Lodge No. 49. Pictured above: Local ladies La’karna and Sharika Hayden (left) and Ulani Anderson and Karri Anderson-Ross (right) pose for a pic during their visit to see the curtain. Pictured right: Representatives of the project’s participants: Councillor Ellen Smith and Mayor Strelow (on behalf of Rockhampton Regional Council), John Steinberger (on behalf of Mount Morgan Rotary and MMPAD), Barry Lollback (on behalf of the Royal Antediluvian Order of the Buffaloes, Mount Morgan Lodge No. 49), and Jessie Conway and Tim Hogan (on behalf of Stanwell Power Station). Locals mark Remembrance Day, 2013

It has been 95 years since the end of World War I, but it is an event that thousands still proudly pause to commemorate. Each year on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month; thousands take a moment to pay tribute to this event in 1918 and to honour all who have and are serving in armed conflicts. Last Monday, acts of remembrance took place across the country, and for Mount Morgan, a community service was held at ANZAC Park. Members of the local community gathered silently for the 11am service, which was led by Mount Morgan RSL Sub Branch President, Mike Johnston. As part of the service, Mr Johnston discussed Remembrance Day; its background as originally “Armistice Day” and the importance this event holds throughout the world today. The service also included the reading of the Remembrance Day prayer, carried out by Lay Minister of the Anglican Church of Saint Mary’s, Keith Hare, and the mounting of the Cenotaph by the 5th Light Horse Regiment Mount Morgan Troop.

The service was concluded with playing of the Last Post, one minute silence, the Reveille, and wreath laying. The Mount Morgan RSL Sub Branch sincerely thanks all who attended. Nominations for Australia Day Awards now open Who inspires you? Is it a friend or colleague who works tirelessly for the community; a talented athlete or artist; or simply someone who gives their valuable time every day to help those who need it most? Rockhampton Regional Council opened nominations for the 2014 Australia Day Awards this week and now is your chance to ensure worthy candidates are acknowledged for their exceptional community achievements. Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow is calling on residents from across our Region, including future Livingstone Shire residents, to recognise the outstanding contributions individuals have made to our community. “Our past award recipients have been very inspirational in their achievements and dedicated generous amounts of time to their chosen field or to help others,” Mayor Strelow said. “Each day, we meet individuals that work hard to make a difference in people’s lives and strive to succeed in sports, community engagement, and cultural endeavours, or are just working tirelessly to help our community.

“We’re encouraging nominations from a cross-section of the community from our younger generation to those who have dedicated their lives to others from every part of our Region from the Coast to Mount Morgan and up to Marlborough. “These awards are really about our community acknowledging, congratulating, and thanking those individuals that make a difference in our community every day.” Award categories include: Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Sportsperson of the Year, Cultural Award, and Community Service Award (in which groups can be nominated also). 6 There were storms either side of their special day, but it couldn’t have been more perfect weather for the local year 12 class last Friday. The date marked graduation day for the 22 seniors, after twelve years of schooling. The day saw the students attend Mount Morgan State High School for a final assembly and special farewell from the school, before heading off mid-morning in preparation for the event’s official celebration; the Year 12 Formal. The class returned in the afternoon, looking very impressive and dressed in their finest for the special occasion. The students met for official photographs at the school before joining guests in a decorated School of Arts Hall, adorned in purple, cream and silver for the evening’s official celebrations. The evening included an official walk through of each couple, a sit down dinner, a class dance and the official cutting of the graduation cake, which was carried out by school captains Jayden Cowl and Lydia Howe. The captains were also among those to make speeches as part of the event, also joined by staff member, Miss Anna Kahler and Principal of the Mount Morgan State High School, Mr Paul Nicholson – each congratulating the class on their achievements and wishing them the best for their future. Congratulations to the graduating class of 2013: Richard Anderson- Bell, Emma Benjamin, Phivie Bird, James Cahill, Robert Cahill, Jay Considine, Jayden Cowl, Harry Dent, Lydia Howe, Celine Lennox, Paul Lodewikus, Brendan Parry, Bo Passmore, April Rudolph, Curtly Toby, Lydia Toby, Kaitlyn Tremaine, Tileea Tull, Jason Wanstall, Tianhi Watts, Jacob Williams and David Woods. A year of achievements for local students The Mount Morgan State High School’s annual awards night was held earlier this month, and has recognised a year of outstanding achievements. The evening saw students reap the rewards for two semesters of hard work; presented with certificates and trophies for academic, cultural and sporting successes throughout the 2013 education year. Hosted by the 2013 Senior Leadership Team, the event welcomed students, staff, family and invited guests to join in on celebrating the impressive efforts of the local students. The first awards presented as part of the evening were Academic and Merit awards, which honoured the high academic achievers of each year level. The presentation of a number of specialised awards followed, including the 2013 Top Year Student honours. This year’s Top Year Student award winners were: Jessica Grange (Top Year 8 Student award winner), Annalise Cant (Top Year 9 Student award winner), Samuel Klower (Top Year 10 Student award winner) and Chynna Williams (Top Year 11 Student award winner). The evening also announced the winner of the highly anticipated Tomky’s Memorial Prize - Dux of the School, which was presented to senior student, Lydia Howe (pictured right). Along with recognising the students’ achievements, the event also paid special tribute to some of the school’s key events throughout the year; presented through a slideshow created by senior student, Emma Benjamin. Students and staff were congratulated on an overall notable education year by Principal, Mr Paul Nicholson during the official Principal’s Speech, as part of the evening. The event was concluded with a special presentation for the 2013 graduating students, as well as cutting of the cake, which was carried out by Top Year 8 Student award winner Jessica Grange and 2013 Dux of the School, Lydia Howe. Congratulations to all award recipients. A full list of award winners can be found at the Mount Morgan State High School office.

Mount Morgan is definitely a town with a rich history. This is something our team at the museum knows and loves, as each day we have the pleasure of presenting details of its past to visitors who are eager to learn more about our historic town. Heading through the museum, a range of information pieces and photographs can be found – presenting details of the famous mine, past buildings, local tales, equipment of a bygone era, and of course, local individuals. In recognition of Remembrance Day last Monday, this “News from the Museum” piece discusses a section of the building which is especially dedicated to past local soldiers. Heading through gallery 2, a number of items can be found that highlight some of the local involvement in past conflicts. Photo pieces passed on by the loved ones of local soldiers, disarmed guns and various pieces from battles are some of the items that can be found in this section. Special write ups on past soldiers and their war efforts are also found. One such write up included in the display is that of former Mount Morgan Mine employee and Australian solider- Private Victor Stanley Jones. This write up details that Private Jones was a former employee of Mount Morgan Gold Mining Co; holding the position of Paymaster at the Mount Morgan Mine. It was at the end of the 19th Century when the Boer War erupted. Private Jones was one of many Australians to soon arrive in South Africa and become involved in the war efforts. History tells that sadly, it was during a four man patrol, on the 1st of January, 1900 that Private Jones was shot and killed instantly. Further to this write up in the Museum, for those who have walked across the replica swinging bridge in Mount Morgan– the name of Private Victor Stanley Jones would be familiar. This bridge, being a joint venture between the former Council and Australian Army is named in memory of him today. A plaque can be found at the end of this bridge with details of his war efforts. It details that Private Jones is recognised as the first Australian to die for imperial service on foreign soil. Pictured: part of the War displays in Gallery 2.

Station Officer Wayne McConachy is hoping that members of the Mount Morgan community will participate in making their community a safer place from unwanted fires. Wayne is shown (below) inspecting a property that recently suffered fire damage to fences and a poultry cage. Mount Morgan has two fire-fighting forces that work together whenever fire threatens people or property. The urban fire station is staffed by Wayne from Monday to Friday during the day, and he assists Auxiliary Firefighting staff led by Captain Darren Barnicoat who are on-call to respond when needed, predominantly for structure fires and road rescue. Calliungal Rural Fire Brigade is led by First Officer Jim Orr, and his team responds mainly to vegetation fires, but both forces will combine to assist with fire-fighting where needed. Since the start of this year, Mount Morgan and the surrounding area has suffered more than 40 vegetation fires of suspicious origin. Wayne advises that “it has only been due to the huge efforts of the local and supporting brigades that many of these fires have been contained before any significant property damage occurred, but if fires continue to be deliberately lit the risk to life and property is high.” A large coordinated burn-off by brigades in August has been very effective in reducing risk immediately around the town, but has resulted in the deliberate fire-lighting continuing in adjacent rural areas. If anyone sees anything suspicious, or has information that could help identify person/s responsible, please contact Wayne at Mt Morgan Fire Station 49381005 or phone Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000. 12 Well first up, a great big thank you to all who came along to the trivia night we held last Saturday evening! This was the second trivia night that we have held, with last Saturday’s event in aim of raising funds for the 2013 Christmas Tree Festival. What a great night! Once again, we were blown away by the huge response. We ended up with 19 teams signing up for the challenge, with some attendees making a special trip from Rockhampton for the event. We had a fantastic time, and have been receiving some really positive feedback from attendees. First place and the $200 cash prize was won by “the Winesteins” (pictured below). Congratulations!

Team “DILLIGAF” and “No Chance” (both pictured below) tied for second place and the $100 cash prize.

Our next fundraiser… With the trivia night all wrapped up, we are now on to the final preparations for our cent sale – which is the next fundraiser for this year’s Christmas Tree Festival. Don’t forget to join us this Saturday (the 23rd of November) for this event! We have been stocking up on prizes and will have a stack of goodies to help you stock your Christmas stockings and your kitchen pantries for the upcoming festive season! The event will be held at the School of Arts Hall and will kick off at 2pm. Recent networking and events: Along with fundraising for the Christmas Tree Festival, we have also been attending a number of events. Our Project Officer and members of MMPAD’s Executive recently attended a networking evening hosted by Capricorn Enterprise in Rockhampton. Along with networking with a number of Capricorn Enterprise members, the evening also provided the chance to meet and speak with various business operators around the region. Members of our organisation also had the opportunity to take part in a community consultation conducted by Capricorn Enterprise last week, in regards to the development of a Destination Tourism Plan for the region. The consultation was positive and offered good opportunity for attendees to express their thoughts in regards to the plan and key focuses for its future. Historic and heritage icons: Another project we currently have underway is progressing work on our local icon conservation. We have recently formed a subcommittee, focusing on the conservation of the local area’s heritage and important sites. The forming of this subcommittee follows past meetings held between MMPAD, Council, members of the Queensland Government and other local asset owners; in aim of seeing a stronger conservation plan established for the Mount Morgan area. Our first meeting was held last fortnight, and outlined some positive steps for future workings. If you would like to become involved with this, please do not hesitate to contact our Project Officer, Camille for further details.

A very special thank you to both second place teams, who generously donated their winnings to the 2013 Christmas Tree Festival also. We sincerely thank all who attended and helped make the evening so much fun! For those who were unable to make the night, or for those who are looking forward to the next - we will definitely by hosting another… possibly sooner than you expect.

The School of Arts’ New curtain: Page 3 of this Argus presents a few snaps of the brand new stage curtain at the School of Arts Hall. It certainly looks great, and is an exciting addition to the Hall! We feel very privileged to have been a part of this project. A sincere thank you goes to the sponsors of this project for making this possible. A special thanks also to Miss Anna Kahler, who initially got the ball rolling and came to our group with the idea. Find us on Facebook!: Don’t forget that you can follow us on Facebook! You can find copies of the photos taken by our Project Officer at various events, as well as community information, details on upcoming events and more. Be sure to like and following our page – mount morgan promotion and development inc.

As a committee we have agreed to this condition – so a portion of these proceeds will be gladly donated to the Calliungal Rural Fire Brigade. Another auction!: As the garage sale/auction supporting the rodeo was a big success, it has been suggested that another be held in the support of the rodeo, held at the School of Arts at the end of February, 2014.

Parents... relax!, Sign the kids in with us and pop across to the Community Services Hall to support the typhoon victims in the Philippines...

All youngsters between 6 and 16 years are invited to a Kids Night Out!

Upcoming promotions: We have received great support from Krista at Capricorn Enterprise and our May Day event will be published in the RACQ magazine and other free event calendars in similar magazines. We are at the point of sending out invitations, stall applications and sponsorship requests to all interested parties asking them to become involved in any way or form in our May Weekend festivities. Please come forward to help us make this a memorable event.

Signed in and supervised $10.00 entry

Our team: Jenni, our grants officer, is gathering momentum in her portfolio. As well as Nicholai and Greg in theirs. It is great to have such a good team to rely on.

School of Arts Hall November 30th, 2013 6:30pm – 10:30pm

So sorry!: We would like to apologise to Kelly and Doug from the Golden Mount Store, for not including them in our last listed credits in the Argus. Truly, a monumental error as we appreciate their valued support immensely. So sorry.

Event proceeds to the Golden Mt Festival

News from the Welfare Bowls Club

It’s been a busy past week at Welfare Bowls Club, with the club hosting the District Pairs competition on Saturday the 9th of November. Local team of Ian Traynor and Andy Johnson made it into the final which was held the following morning, but were beaten by the Yeppoon Bowls Club team. The Sunday afternoon saw Club Patron, Len Buckton, host his Patrons Day which welcomed 50 players to the green, including players from around CQ, as well as the local area. Our busy schedule continued on Tuesday afternoon, for the second round of The Passmore Trophy. This was played between Victoria Park Bowls Club and Welfare Bowls Club. Welfare had a 3 point lead after the first round in July at Victoria Park but lost by 17 points on the day. Better luck next year. Pictured above: Passmore Shield, Welfare’s best team: Peter Wills, George Friesacher and Abbie Rowe. Mountain Mick’s Tropical Christmas Fruit salad

Okay, it’s 40+ degrees in the shade. You’re all full after a very nice Christmas lunch, with all the trimmings. What about a refreshing and light dessert?... Here’s one you will love! You can upscale this recipe to feed more party goers.

Shopping list: • 2 large mangoes - peeled and diced up • 5 kiwi fruit (Chinese gooseberries), diced • ¼ teaspoon Chinese five spice • 2 tablespoons of raw sugar • the juice of ½ lime Method: Now this is so easy... Cut up all the fruit and yes, if you don’t like one, replace with one you like... and yes, you can have other fruits as well. Now sprinkle the sugar and five spice over the fruit. Add the lime juice and stir well. Now here’s where the *Semifreddo comes in - we place the bowl of this fruit salad in the freezer- you’re going have to watch it about every five minutes. Open the freezer and stir the salad until it is semi frozen. Serve by itself or with some vanilla ice-cream. *Semifreddo is a class of semi-frozen desserts. So please enjoy this Awesome Semifreddo Tropical Fruit Salad on Christmas day as you enjoy the company of your family and friends.

In memory of my dear husband

In light of this time of year, I thought I would share a poem I wrote a few years back…

18-02-1929 - 21-11-2012

Santa’s Stands too by Mick Blake I’ve stood the post, I’ve stood the watch, but now it is their turn, To stand the post, stand the watch, and to keep evil at bay whatever the cost. As it is our choice to stand the watch, to guard the post and pay the cost If in harm’s way, we pray that fighting may stop, and that so Santa can stand too, Deliver his gifts to our Soldiers one and all, with hearts so true, Including submariners deep out of site as they can see Santa’s sled on their radar tonight, We send our love so that God may bless you and keep you safe and out of harm’s way too. As Santa sets flight from desert to night we pray your safe in bed snug and tight. Our best wishes to all in harm’s way, tonight, Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.

John Edwin Hempseed

He was simply the best And now he has been laid to rest But we were very blessed To have shared 62 years of wedded bliss Remembered always by his loving wife Ivy, and children Janette, Neil and Cathy.

Bereavement Thanks Rhonda and John Ramm and family sincerely thank everyone for their prayers, flowers, cards and expressions of sympathy on the recent passing of their mother, Rita Paton. Thanks also to Mount Morgan Ambulance, Blue Care and staff at Mount Morgan Hospital.
