This snippet will bring back memories to many but a little information to late comers to our town. When the train journeyed from Rockhampton, up famous razorback, its last stop before Mount Morgan was at the Walterhall Station. This little station had a few more attractions than other small stations. Firstly, it had a wooden overpass bridge so the pedestrians could walk across the railway lines in safety. It was a popular spot for children who enjoyed being on the bridge when the train passed underneath as the engine driver often blew his whistle and let off some steam. For vehicles there was a sub-way beneath the tracks just before the station. This subway (pictured below) often filled with water after heavy rain and then vehicles had to cross the railway lines after a security gate had been opened for them by the station master. The sub-way was later filled in and now access to the residential section is across the lines, but of course trains have ceased operation. Walterhall was a very self-supporting suburb in the early years with all shops catering for the general items necessary for everyday living. The Hotel located there was called “The Avoca” and after many years of trading its licence was revoked in 1953 and it was demolished. The suburb also had panel and mechanical garages and the medical scene was significant with a doctor, nurse and ambulance man living in the suburb and all three ready to help in any emergency. Some residents still living at Walterhall today claim it was a wonderful suburb in which to reside and have no desire to transfer to any other area. Another significant date just passed was the 25th November which celebrated the 20th Anniversary of the official opening of the John Cani Estate Aged Care Hostel and accommodation complex. It was a major event for the town and the official opening was attended by Rev. Heenan, Rev. Benjamin, Rev. Mooney, Mrs Marjorie Henzell M.P. and Mr McKenna, Chairman of the Board. The address and Unveiling of the Plaque on behalf of the Federal Minister for Health, Welfare and Housing was performed by M.P. Mrs Marjorie Henzell, who was the then Member for Capricornia. Today, the Complex is known as “Carinity Aged Care – John Cani” and may it continue for many years doing wonderful work of caring for our aged folk.

News and images of the destruction caused in the Philippines by Typhoon Haiyan has been something that has sent ripples around the world. Numerous fundraisers have been held worldwide since the news broke in October, each in aim of donating to the relief efforts and assisting those affected. For Mount Morgan, donations have poured in from the local community through a fundraising night that was held last Saturday. The fundraiser saw the attendance of 75 local residents. The evening included live entertainment and dance demonstrations, supplied free of charge by musical talents from the community and around the region. As well as the support of those in attendance on the night, the fundraiser also gained support from a number of local businesses and organisations; who donated food for the evening’s supper, prizes for the event’s raffles, as well as monetary donations. A total of $1,827 was raised through the local efforts; a culmination of the event and donations made on the evening and during its lead up. The sum will now be donated to the relief efforts in the Philippines.
If you would like to make a donation to the Relief efforts, please contact Doris on 4938 1771.
A big thanks goes from the event’s coordinators to all who supported the event, through donations, entertainment and attendance.

Locals have a ball learning circus skills
It has certainly been an exciting past fortnight for the number of locals who’ve been involved in the latest visit from Flipside Circus. Residents of all ages have spent part of last month tumbling, hula hooping and even swinging on the trapeze thanks to the two week stay from Queensland’s premier youth circus. The latest visit saw a range of free circus workshops offered from the Mount Morgan School of Arts throughout the trainers’ stay. Workshops included special classes for kindergartens and mums with bubs, lessons on how to make your very own circus gear, adult circus skill classes and afterschool circus activities. “It’s been really good,” Flipside trainer, Alex Weckes-Huck said last week. “The second week especially has been really busy.” Alex said the activities had been well received in the community, in particular the afterschool workshops-with each class reaching a full capacity of participants. “The afterschool classes have been packed,” Alex said. “We’ve had such interest that we’ve had to turn away between 5 and 15 kids every day this week - as there’s only so many we can take on for each class due to safety reasons. “While it’s sad that we haven’t been able to teach all on some afternoons due to the interest, it’s been really good that we’ve had that many kids flooding in.” Last month’s visit marked the third time in Mount Morgan for Flipside; with trainers working with local students in 2012 as well as August of this year. The group are set to return again this time next year. Pictured top: Some of the action during Flipside Circus’ final afterschool workshop, last Friday. Locals gear up for Christmas Tree Festival In just a little over a week the Mount Morgan School of Arts Hall will once again be transformed into a twinkling wonderland when it plays host to Mount Morgan’s annual Christmas Tree Festival. Locals Isra, Sule and Aston Tschirpig (top right) and Rhonda Ramm are among those who have been gearing up for the event – working on spectacular entries that will make up part of the event’s dazzling tree display. This year marks the festival’s 11th year in the community, established in 1992 by the Saint Mary’s Anglican Church Parish. Over the years the event has grown to become an annual favourite for the community, with last year’s celebration seeing a record 600+ attendees, and more than 100 trees on display. The 2013 Mount Morgan Christmas Tree Festival will kick off at 6:00pm next Friday (December 13) at the Mount Morgan School of Arts. The evening includes fantastic Christmas tree displays, a sausage sizzle, live entertainment and market stalls. Christmas cheer for Pensioners & Superannuants The Mount Morgan Branch of the Pensioners and Superannuants League have wrapped up the year with a special gathering at the Mount Morgan School of Arts. The local group hosted a Christmas break up last Thursday (November 21st), welcoming more than 40 club members and friends to the event. Attendees enjoyed a Christmas luncheon, and a variety of musical numbers, presented by local members of the group. The Mount Morgan Pensioners and Superannuants League will recommence in 2014, on Thursday the 27th of February. For further details on the group and how you too can become involved, please phone Pat or Barry on 4938 1986. Carols herald in the Christmas season

December has begun and so too has the countdown to Christmas. A number of locals have ushered in this year’s festive season with song, taking part in the annual Carols in Saint Mary’s. The event was held at the Anglican Church last Sunday evening and was organised by the Saint Mary’s Anglican Parish and the Mount Morgan Uniting Church. This year’s event marked the 15th year in the community, and included a variety of carols, Christmas messages and poetry as well as special live performances from Bouldercombe residents, Jenny and Bruce Rogers, and the Bouldercombe Singers. The evening welcomed local residents and visitors from around the region, including Mayor of the Rockhampton Regional Council, Cr Margaret Strelow and Division 4 Representative, Cr Ellen Smith. The Saint Mary’s Parish sincerely thanks all who attended. Pictured: the Bouldercombe Singers prior to their performance at the Carols in Saint Mary’s last Sunday evening.

Historic Leichhardt changes hands
December has commenced with an exciting new venture for new residents Narelle and Pete Tildsley. The pair are now the proud owners of the Leichhardt Hotel Mount Morgan and officially kicked off their first day on the job on Monday. “We’ve been in Mount Morgan for five weeks and we’ve found the town very friendly,” Narelle said. “We officially start on Monday (December 2nd) and we’re looking forward to getting started.” Pete and Narelle have travelled from Forbes, in Central West New South Wales, and leave behind their former occupations. Narelle previously worked as a retail assistant in a patchwork shop after many years as a hairdresser. Pete leaves behind many years as a butcher. “This is something very different,” Pete said. “At least five years ago we decided that we wanted a change and that this was something we wanted to do. “We wanted to go north – we actually didn’t plan on coming this far north. We must have had a look at a dozen other pubs but when we got up here and saw the place, we thought ‘let’s give it a crack’ ”. The decision to buy the hotel now sees a new chapter in life - for not only Pete and Narelle, but also for former owners, Shelly Marty and Andrew Adam. “We’d always planned that we would be here about five years, and we feel that we’re moving at the right time and that it’s time to pass the baton on to someone else,” Andrew said.
“It’s been the longest that I have been in one place,” Shelly said.
Shelly and Andrew took up took up their venture at the Leichhardt in May of 2008.
“Not the longest in the same town, but the same house. It’s definitely no mean feat to tie my feet down. I’m a bit of a gypsy,” she laughed.
“We jumped at the opportunity with the Leichhardt,” Andrew said.
Best of luck Shelly and Andrew and congratulations Pete and Narelle on your new venture.
“We thought ‘here’s an opportunity that’s different, so why not’.”
Pictured top: new owners of the Leichhardt Hotel, Narelle and Pete stand in the hotel’s beer garden.
“We really want to say a special thanks to the staff we have had. They took us under their wings and trained us up.”
Pictured above: Chloe, Shelly and Andrew.
Andrew and Shelly will be making a move to Tasmania, though not before a holiday to Asia. “We’re excited about the move and the holiday, but we’re also sad to leave,” Shelly said. “It’s been beautiful here. We have really been looked after by the town, they have supported us and hopefully we have supported them too.” Along with its memories, Shelly said Mount Morgan also holds a bit of a personal record.

From your State MP... Congratulations to 2013 Students I would like to take this opportunity to once again congratulate all Mount Morgan SHS students on their outstanding achievement. I was fortunate this year to be able to attend the annual awards presentation and had a very enjoyable evening. I would also like to extend my best wishes to all Year 12 students as they now move on to tertiary education, a traineeship, apprenticeship or the general workforce. This is a very nostalgic and exciting time for you now with your entire future ahead of you. I wish you success and happiness along whichever path you have chosen to travel. Hi Argus readers, It’s hard to believe that we are now in December and up to our second last Argus issue for the year! Although the year has flown by, there hasn’t been a short supply of great things happening in the Mount. Our final issue next fortnight will include our annual “Year that was” and we’ll take a look back at some of these highlights. Speaking of highlights, it’s not long now until the annual Christmas Tree Festival! It’s not too late to get cracking on a tree entry for this year’s display. Entries can be submitted at the School of Arts Hall next Wednesday and Thursday between 10am and 5pm. Our recent Cent sale: Last Saturday we held a Christmas Cent Sale at the School of Arts, which was our second fundraiser to assist in hosting this year’s Christmas Tree Festival. We had a great afternoon and a fantastic turn out. A very big thank you to all who came along. A big thanks to all who so kindly made donations for this event and also to those who assisted on the day. It was greatly appreciated! Our monster Christmas Hamper!: In the lead up to Christmas, we have packed a wheelbarrow chockfull of Christmas goodies! In total, this hamper is worth over $250. Tickets are $1 each and are available from our office (61 Morgan St). We will also have the hamper at the Christmas Tree Festival, with tickets available both evenings. Proceeds from this fundraiser go toward the annual fish restocking of the Mount Morgan Dam, with the next restocking scheduled for early next year. Mount Morgan Calendars for 2014: For our organisation, promoting Mount Morgan often means getting out and about in the local area in search of some great photo opportunities.
Ergon Energy is currently developing its 2015 to 2020 investment plans to ensure we can best meet the regional Queensland electricity distribution needs of tomorrow and an important part of our engagement program around this planning process is the online ‘have your say’ survey.
We never have to look far, as the area provides some seriously great snaps!
To find out more and give your views go to www.ergon.com.au/futureinvestment
These calendars will be available at the Christmas Tree Festival, so be sure to check them out!
This year for something a little different, we’ve pulled together some of our favourite photographs taken by our organisation over the past year.

Well, with the year wrapping up, we have certainly had a productive past few months for the Golden Mount Festival Committee. Although we still have much work ahead in the lead up to the 2014 Golden Mount Festival Weekend, we feel that things are coming together well, and wanted to take this opportunity to say a very big thanks to all who have supported our organisation thus far. Thanks to Committee members: Last week saw our organisation have another constructive meeting to determine the direction that our organisation is heading. We are lucky to have such a hardworking and committed group of volunteers make up our organisation. A very big thanks to each and every one. Local resident, Nicholai is in charge of the next festival’s entertainment and street parade and is coming up with loads of suggestions and ideas and following them up with vigour, passion and enthusiasm. Likewise, local residents Trish and Greg, who are in charge of the stalls for the next festival, have hit the ground running, not only sending out a large number of application forms but also working hard to satisfy the stall holders’ needs and requirements. A tremendous effort from both of you. The weekly raffles - thanks to our sponsors: We must not forget our raffles, which have been the lifeblood of this organisation. Up until now, this has been the main source of income that we have received for the next festival, with major sponsors a little hard to come by. Although the format has not been to everyone’s liking, we have tried to incorporate as wide a range of businesses as possible and we are most grateful to all those businesses who have supported us each and every week.
Our sponsors are: Sandra and Wayne of the Golden Nugget Hotel, Kelly and Doug from the Golden Mount Store, Allison and Barry from the Mount Morgan Hot Bread Shop, Leeanne and Lynette from Lee Frog’s Bistro, Louise and Larry from Fox Video, Peter and Narelle from the Leichhardt Hotel, Catherine from the Golden Bite Café, Kerrilyn and Schae from Mt Morgan News, Catherine and Hugh from the Railway Hotel, Greg and Trish – Wildlife Carers, Mark of Mark Humphries Electrical, and Nod and Veronica from Golden Mount Taxis. A special thank you also to Andrew and Shelly, previously of the Leichhardt Hotel for their support until their recent departure. We wish them every success in their future. We should also mention the stoic buyers of the tickets who weekly come rain or shine, faultlessly support this organisation. Thank you one and all, for without your support, this organisation would surely falter. We would also like to whole-heartily thank Henry Anderson who has done an outstanding job selling tickets, not only the amount but sitting so regularly. A truly magnificent achievement. Much appreciated. Another item concerning the raffles, is the sights on which we sit. It is not without appreciation that we are allowed to use these places week after week. We certainly value this privilege and the whole organisation thanks you wholeheatedly. A big thanks to the staff of The Mount Morgan Aboriginal Corporation and also Kerry and Ian from the Mount Morgan Post Office for this and for your community spirit. We should also not forget the help of the stock agents and the Central Queensland’s Livestock Exchange who have allowed us to sit at their complex on several occasions to sell tickets. Our last raffle for 2013 will be held on the 20th of December. These will recommence on the 28th of January, 2014.

Update - Mount Morgan Range repairs
Works to see the Mount Morgan Range (Burnett Highway) reopened to traffic are progressing, though it may still be some time before all will be fully completed. The Department of Main Roads has announced that works to the site are continuing to make good progress, however that the reopening of the road is not expected until April, 2014. The Department has been working to reconstruct the highway following severe damage in January’s flood event, which saw 35 landslips along the site.
On behalf of the students of Mount Morgan Central State School, we would like to thank the community for their donations of the Paul’s Bottle Cap. We raised a total of $500 and all of this was distributed between all classes for new reading books and extra resources. Thankyou The Mount Morgan Central State School P&C
Working crews had hoped to see the site back in action within six months of the reconstruction’s commencement, though the rebuilding task has proved more difficult than initially expected. Wet weather, steep terrain and further slips have been just some of the difficulties for the crews over the past months. Despite the setbacks and extended reopening date, the Department say that works are still coming together well. “Major excavation works near the top of the range are well advanced to establish a strong platform to reconstruct the Burnett Highway,” a Transport and Main Roads spokesperson announced last Friday. “Minor range reconstruction works, where significant excavation was not required, are nearly completed. The Department said that overall, 65 percent of the work has been accomplished, with the Range expected to reopen by April, weather permitting.

- FREE sausage sizzle with tea/coffee - 10am- 12 noon - Saturday, December 7th - IGA, Mount Morgan
NOTICE My inspiration for this recipe comes from my favorite choc lolly “Maltesers” ™. As a young boy when asked what I would like it was “Maltesers please”. On the odd times we got lollies, not like these days. And I do love a good Cheesecake, so I played about a bit and came up with this very awesome delight. I hope you try it and love it as much as I did.
Shopping list: • 1 packet Nice biscuits (crushed) • ½ cup butter or margarine • 2 tubs of cream cheese (Philly) at room temperature • 1 can condensed milk • ¼ cup lemon juice • 280g packet of Maltesers ™ • 1 tblsp of gelatine powder • 100ml of hot water
Method: First, crush the Nice biscuits in the food processor. Add the butter and combine together. Now press this biscuit mix into a 23cm spring formed baking tin that has been sprayed with cooking spray. Press this mix in very firm and pack it down hard. Then let it set in the fridge. Now make the filling. First, take the cream cheese and dice it up, add to food processor. Now add the condensed milk and lemon juice and whizz it together. Now add half the packet of Maltesers and whizz in the food processor until they are all broken up. Now add the hot water to the gelatine powder and add to the mix and again, whizz it up. Now what I do is I mix the other half of whole Maltesers into the mixture (you can break them up by using a rolling pin ). Now pour this Maltesers Cream Cheese mix into your cake tin. Cover with cling wrap and set in the fridge for about 3 hours. Serve with a nice cuppa or coffee. Please enjoy and hey look, no CHILLI! Have a great day. - Mick
