As this is the last article for 2013, we, the members of Pride in Your Town wish to sincerely thank the wonderful people who take so much pride in their own area, yards and entire street footpath and also collect rubbish when they observe it lying around. You tidy citizens all deserve medals, and your efforts are greatly appreciated by us.

We also express our thanks to all businesses that do their best to keep Morgan Street presentable but have an ongoing problem with careless people placing rubbish in the gutters and on the footpath instead of making the effort to raise the lid and place it in the bin. Bring back the Litter Officer who can fine these untidy folk on the spot.

Rodeo success sees trip to the US It almost seems an understatement to say that the year 2013 has proven to be a big one for local resident, Emma Benjamin.

Completing a Certificate III in Childcare, graduating high school, competing in numerous rodeo challenges and even venturing to New Zealand to be a part of the Aussie team for the Trans Tasman School Rodeo Challenge are just some of the year’s highlights for this talented local.

Now, thanks to some very impressive barrel racing abilities, 2014 is looking just as bright. Next year will see Emma saddle up for a trip to the United States.

The local rodeo talent won the trip to America at the Top Guns Awards Presentation in Rockhampton last Saturday; the result of tying for first place in this year’s Great Western Rodeo Challenge.

Emma’s sister Zara and cousins Annalise and Holly are also proving to be upcoming rodeo stars.

“At the awards last Saturday, my sister Zara took out the Young Guns Series, and my cousin Annalise won the Senior Youth for ABHA and Holly took home the Most Improved for 12 and Under,” Emma said.

Along with her family, Emma said she has also been lucky enough to share her passion with her current employers.

“Mark and Cecelia from the Red Frog are great. Mark actually used to ride against my grandfather.

“They have been so supportive and I’d really like to thank them and all who have been so supportive with my racing over the years.”

“The competition is held every year, and those competing accumulate points throughout the year in the nine rodeos of the series,” Emma said on the background to her recent exciting news.

“By the end of the year, the person with the highest points wins a trip to America.”

With two first place winners for this year’s series, Emma and Gracemere resident, Jill Lyons were required to carry out one last challenge – though a much less vigorous task than those they’d been undertaking throughout the year.

“We had to do a draw to see who would win the trip,” Emma said.

“There were six cards and we had to pick one at a time until either of us opened the winner.

“The first one I picked, I was so disappointed because it was blank but then the next one I opened – it said “Congratulations you’re going to America!” ” Emma said she plans to take the trip this time next year and soak up all the action at the State’s National Finals Rodeo.

“It’s a huge rodeo and has about ten rounds,” Emma said.

“It’s going to be so much fun to watch, and I’ll have a good friend of mine and a few of my family members coming along too so I can’t wait.”

The news topped a successful season for Emma, and an already outstanding riding career overall, with recent winnings including the Australian High School Rodeo Association not once but twice, the Young Guns Series Junior, Young Guns Series Rookie, Top Guns Series and two buckles for Calliope and Tough Enough To Wear Pink Junior.

“I began riding when I could walk and started competing in rodeo when I was 11,” Emma said.

“It’s just something I love to do and the overall challenge and the adrenaline that comes with it.”

And Emma certainly isn’t alone in her passion for rodeo.

“A lot of my family have competed and enjoy riding.

My mum won the Rookie Title in 2002.”

Locals light up for 2013 Tree Festival

Christmas cheer was aplenty in Mount Morgan over the weekend, as hundreds celebrated the festive season with the annual Christmas Tree Festival.

For two evenings, bumper crowds were welcomed to the Mount Morgan School of Arts Hall to enjoy all the event’s annual favourites.

Just over 100 Christmas trees glittered in the School of Arts, providing another spectacular tree display for the event.

Along with the overall dazzling display, the crowds also admired the creativity of the local groups, businesses and residents who individually entered each tree – this year seeing a number of decorations and even trees made by hand and reflective of their group.

The heart-warming event also featured an entertaining programme over the two nights. The Friday evening included its yearly favourites of live entertainment as well as market stalls and student artwork displays. Saturday evening saw all of this plus carols by candlelight, free amusement rides for the kiddies, and even a visit from Santa and Mrs Claus.

This year’s event marked the 11th year in the community, and was hosted by Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc., in conjunction with the Saint Mary’s Anglican Church Parish .

MMPAD and Saint Mary’s would like to sincerely thank all who supported the event and helped to make it such an enjoyable and successful occasion.

It was a very merry morning at the Community Services Hall last Thursday, when the Golden Mount Social Group hosted their end of year Christmas party.

Attendees were welcomed to a beautifully bedecked hall and were treated to a morning of mingling, live entertainment, Christmas sweets and a sit down lunch for the special event.

HIPPY celebrates Christmas with fun at the Dam The successful parenting and early childhood program, HIPPY brought together parents and children to celebrate Christmas and the year’s work with a very jolly Christmas party at the Mount Morgan Dam last week.

The Red Cross operates the Home Interaction Program for Parents and Youngsters (HIPPY) locally, providing a free home-based parenting and early childhood enrichment program for families with children aged four and five years.

Around thirty families have participated in the program regularly throughout the year, so it was time for the children to have some fun. Red Cross staff organised games like “What’s the time Mr Reindeer”, Christmas craft, songs, stories and yummy Christmas treats for all of the children to enjoy.

Local Red Cross coordinator Imogen Gregg-Auriac said the program has had a great year.

“Delivered through both home visiting and parent groups, HIPPY provides free activities, books and materials to families as well as dedicated support from a home tutor; it has been so wonderful to see the children develop over the year, so Christmas seemed like a great reason to bring everyone together,” she said.

The program will continue next year supporting all current families, but anyone living in Mount Morgan and getting ready for school in 2015 will be also eligible to join.

Christmas celebrations for the Dee River Oldies The Dee River Oldies Group held their Christmas Breakup Lunch in the Community Services Hall on Friday November 29th.

Our first meeting for 2014 will be held on Tuesday the 18th of February, with the first street stall on Thursday, the 20th of February.

Sixty members enjoyed a delicious meal of cold meats and salads followed by dessert. We were also pleased to welcome three members from The 60 and Better Program from Rockhampton.

Our Coffee Table Raffle, drawn at the Christmas Tree Festival, was won by Miranda Garrett Ticket No. C7.

Many thanks to Keith Watts for his generous donation and also to Schae, Kerrilyn and staff at The Mount Morgan Newsagency for their help with the ticket sales.

Bruce and Jenny of Sounds Good from Bouldercombe entertained us with their great music during the event.

The celebration also included raffles and a lucky door prize – which was won by Maureen Daniels. Winners in the Raffle were Jim Leigh, who won 1st prize (an iced Christmas Cake), Carol Glover, who won 2nd prize (a basket of fruit), and Doris Tremaine – who won 3rd prize (a plum pudding and custard).

In the spirit of giving, the event also saw club member, Carolyn, present a cheque on behalf of the group to Doris Tremaine - towards the recent fundraising appeal for the Philippines disaster.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported us throughout the year with our raffles, street stalls and bus trips.

Making the Christmas season shine bright Lisa and Jayden Ferguson (of 300 Struck Oil Road) are among a number of locals who will be switching on the festive cheer this holiday season.

Their family has been gearing up for this year’s Christmas Lights Competition, hosted by the Saint Mary’s Anglican Church Parish.

The local household and last year’s victors have spent the past weeks decorating their dwelling with spectacular lighting displays.

And they’re not alone.

This year’s competition currently sees 8 entrants, with 6 listed for the residential section.

Judging is set to take place this Thursday evening, December 19th, with winners announced this Friday.

Keep an eye out in the community noticeboard for details of winning entrants, available from December 20th.

In the meantime, and in the lead up to Christmas, local residents are encouraged to hit the streets and take a look at the glowing local efforts.

Year 7s farewell primary school Last week saw students of Mount Morgan Central farewell the 2013 education year.

For 39 classmates, it was also farewell to their years as primary school students.

The local year 7 Class of 2013 celebrated the milestone with a graduation dinner, held at the Mount Morgan Dee Bowls Club last Wednesday.

Along with a sit down dinner, the evening included an official farewell- presented by Mount Morgan Central Principal, Blair Harp, the presentation of certificates to each student, and the cutting of the graduation cake- by school captains Keanna Martin and Janaya Bray.

A year of high achievements for Mt Morgan Central

Mount Morgan Central State School has celebrated a year of high achievements with the 2013 School Awards Day. Held at the Mount Morgan Central State School last Wednesday, the morning welcomed staff, students, families and members of the community to join together in recognising the academic, cultural and sporting achievements of Mount Morgan Central’s students throughout the 2013 education year.

The morning announced the high achievers of each year level, honouring students from Prep to Year 6 with Academic Awards.

The 2013 Academic Awards were presented to: Ethan Pfeiffer (Prep), Jessica Pickstone (Year 1), Cayte Desmone (Year 1), Isra Tschirpig (Year 2), Bridget Regan (Year 3), Cody Brown (Year 4), Shelby Pridemore (Year 5), Mary-Rose Donald-Nord, (Year 6).

Awards specific to Year 7 students were also presented, including: The Ted Malone Best Trier Award – presented to Keanna Martin and Nakina Goltz, The Caves & District Lions Club Citizenship Award- presented to Janaya Bray, the P&C Persistence and Effort Award presented to Michael Tebbs and Janaya Bray, and The Michael Robinson Memorial Academic Achievement Award – presented to Liam McRobbie.

The morning also saw recognised a number of students for impressive results in the 2013 NAPLAN test, as well as the presenting of Academic Achievement, Citizenship, and Arts/Cultural awards.

Along with the top achievement awards, a number of individual specialised awards were also presented as part of the morning, including: the Mt Morgan Art and Craft Guild Encouragement Awards- presented to Amber Machin, Cooper Bradley, Darcy Cant, Jacob Dawes, Talia Rebech, Lorina Seppings, the Mount Morgan CWA Most Improved Year 6 Student- presented to Atlanta Polizzi, 100 Percent Attendance Awards- presented to Bridget Regan and Charlene Creamer and the Year 6 RSL All Rounder Award – presented to Mary-Rose Donald-Nord.

Along with recognising the students’ academic achievements, the event also paid special tribute to some of the school’s top sportspeople, acknowledging the efforts of top students in junior and senior cricket, T-ball, softball, rugby league, soccer, basketball, rugby league and netball.

Awards included the Most Valuable, Most Improved and Most Consistent Players and the Coaches Award for Never Giving Up. This year’s Commonwealth Bank Sportsperson of the Year Award was presented to Tyler Toby.

Congratulations to all award recipients.

A number of Mount Morgan Central State School students have also received recognition for their high achievements at the Darumbal Awards, held in Rockhampton on November 15.

Savannah Alden and Mary-Rose Donald-Nord were presented with an Academic Award, Janaya Bray and Lanie Martin received a Citizenship Award and Keanna Martin was presented with a Sporting Award.

These students not only achieved well in their nominated areas but school attendance had to be of a high level.

12 Mount Morgan Historical Museum wish everyone a great Christmas and a happy New Year with good health.

Well, we have reached our final issue for 2013!

A sincere thank you goes to you, our readers, for your support over the past year. Once again, we have received a great number of story ideas, articles, advertisements and invitations to local events throughout the production of the past 25 issues. We’ve really enjoyed bringing you another year of the Argus, and hope you have enjoyed your reading.

Please be advised that the Museum will be closed from December 24, 2013 until January 6th, 2014.

We will be taking a short break over the festive season, but will return with our first issue for 2014 on Jan 17.

Along with the Argus, we have been so pleased to have had the opportunity to support and host a number of community events this year – such as the Pride in your Town Awards, the Silver Wattle fun day, the Village Festival Road Trip and the fundraising cent sales and trivia nights. Each of these was been a first for us, and each and every time we have been blown away by the great support from the entire community. Thank you once again to all who have assisted us with these events!

The 2013 Christmas Tree Festival:

The most recent event we have had the privilege of being involved with has been the Christmas Tree Festival. It has been great being able to work with the parish of Saint Mary’s Anglican Church – who established this event and have been building it up each and every year since 1992!

On behalf of both our organisations, a great big thank you to all who came along, we hope you had a wonderful time. There was a great turn out both evenings and the tree entries were amazing, as always.

A special thanks goes to all entered trees, our wonderful entertainers (the Capricorn District Country Music Association, the Bouldercombe Singers, Isaac Fox, Di Coburn and Greg Mathers), the event’s stall holders, amusement ride operators and all who assisted us throughout the week and weekend! A special thanks the event’s sponsors: the Rotary Club of Mount Morgan, the Dee River Oldies, Mayor Margaret Strelow, Cr Cherie Rutherford, Cr Ellen Smith, MP Ted Malone, MP Ken O’Dowd, and IGA.

We’re moving:

As of the end of this week, our office will no longer be located at 61 Morgan Street. From Jan 2nd, you will be able to find us at the Rail Museum.

We have recently been announced as the new management team for this site. Previously the site was managed by Council, with strong support and great assistance provided by Mount Morgan Railway Inc. The complex will continue to operate as a rail museum and tourist information centre, and we have been extremely lucky to be provided support by a number of Railway Inc members.

We are looking forward to commencing this venture early next year.

Locals meet the Sarge The Mount Morgan Neighbourhood Watch Committee welcomed members of the community to “meet the Sarge” earlier this month, with a meet and greet sausage sizzle.

A number of local residents took the opportunity to meet the event’s special guest Mount Morgan Police Station’s new Officer in Charge, Sergeant Mark Dean.

New management of Mount Morgan Rail Museum Rockhampton Regional Council will hand over the operation and management of the Mount Morgan Railway Museum to Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Incorporated (MMPAD) over the Christmas New Year period.

After a tender process, Council signed a management rights agreement with MMPAD which will see the organisation operate and manage the museum into the future.

Mayor Margaret flagged in her 2013/14 budget speech that there would be changes in the way Council managed several of its community facilities.

Mayor Strelow said that the assets of the museum would remain the property of Rockhampton Regional Council.

MMPAD said they are looking forward to the new role and assisting to see the complex remain open – continuing to operate as a rail museum and tourist information centre, and also utilised for MMPAD’s current duties such as the production of the Mount Morgan Argus and local development projects.

The Mount Morgan Railway Museum will be closed from Monday 16 December and will reopen 2 January.

An empty home is a prime target for intruders because they have less chance of being disturbed and the offence can go undetected for days or even weeks.

Intruders always look for signs that a home is unoccupied.

The longer the home is unoccupied, the more vulnerable it becomes. If you are away for an extended period of time, police advise that you have someone house sit.

Follow these tips for keeping your house secure while you’re away: • Inform local police of your absence and leave a contact name and number.

• Check all doors and windows are securely locked.

• Ask your neighbours to watch for visitors but not to tell visitors you are away.

• Arrange a friend or neighbour to mow the lawn and water the plants.

• Arrange for mail to be held at the Post Office or collected by a neighbour.

• Cancel all deliveries, especially newspapers.

• Ask your neighbours to collect junk mail.

• Secure your garbage bin.

• Install electrical timers that automatically switch on lights and tune your radio to a talk-back program during the day so you house looks and sounds “normal”.

• Disconnect the electrical pad on radio controlled or electronic garage doors and use a strong auxiliary key lock instead.

• Turn down the volume of your telephone ringer and don’t leave a message on your answering machine that tells callers you’re away.

• Install external sensor lights.

• Check the yard to ensure no ladders or tools are accessible.

• Don’t leave keys concealed outside the house. Give them to a trusted friend or neighbour.

• Ask neighbours to contact police if they notice anything suspicious.

• Secure your vehicle if leaving it at home.

• Ask a neighbour to park their car in your driveway at different times.

• Ensure all easily removable articles are marked using the Property Identification System.

• If you’re a member of Neighbourhood Watch, inform your neighbours and block coordinator that you will be away.

As the year draws to an end, we take a moment to revisit some of the year’s memorable moments as featured in the past 25 Argus issues.

January

February

The Australia Day weekend may be long gone, but it’s safe to say that it’s a time of year that many will remember well. The year kicked off with wild weather and record rainfall when ex-tropical cyclone Oswald made its move through the Mount; seeing road closures, flash flooding, power outages and a whole lot of rain.

January also saw our very own Emma and Zara Benjamin head to New Zealand as part of the annual Trans Tasman School Rodeo Challenge. The Australian team arrived home as victors, with 355 points to New Zealand’s 335.

February saw the Mount Morgan Dam become the new home to 8,500 Yellow Belly fingerlings, through the area’s annual restocking project.

This month also included the official induction of Mount Morgan State High’s and Mount Morgan Central Primary’s school captains and leadership teams for 2013.

March

March saw the announcement of “Moving House”– a project showcasing houses moved from Mount Morgan in the 1920s.

This month also included Clean Up Australia Day (pictured), a fundraiser BBQ for the SES and Rural Fire Service, as well as a different kind of investigative project, with a visit from members of Paranormal Paratek Queensland.

April

Ten Mount Morgan SES volunteers received a prestigious medal during April; presented with the National Emergency Award in recognition of their extraordinary assistance during the 2010/2011 floods and Cyclone Yasi. April also saw the ANZACS remembered with hundreds attending the local services held at ANZAC Park.

This month also saw the community update on the Mount Morgan Mine take place, along with a number of local celebrations and fundraisers including the CWA’s Cuppa for Cancer, and a special event held in recognition of the community efforts of Rose and Frank Malloy.

May

May proved a major celebration as thousands celebrated the 2013 Golden Mount Festival (pictured left are the Crack Up Sisters and local, Holly Cant.) The first Pride in your Town Awards were held as part of this year’s Festival – recognising 25 locals for their valued community service (pictured Cr Ellen Smith and Abbie Rowe. Photos by Photo by Mick Joicey). This month also saw locals Annie and Keith Hare presented with the RRC Cultural Award in a belated Australia Day Awards Ceremony.

June

The month of June proved an exciting time for Mt Morgan News and one very lucky local resident – who took out a Division 1 in the Gold Lotto Draw. June also saw a number of locally knitted items presented to RRC for the Homeless Connect in Rockhampton; presented by members of the Mount Morgan Lively Knitting and Crochet Club and the Mount Morgan Arts and Crafts.

July

July was an exciting month for the local area and a number of local residents. This month welcomed a fantastic performance from the U.S. 7th Fleet Army Band at the School of Arts Hall (above left), and the first Village Festival Road Trip. Local residents Beris Austin and Stacey Hayes also saw their very own artwork featured in a Rockhampton art exhibition, and Jonathon Stock headed for the U.S. for the World Championships of Performing Arts (above centre) where he took out a gold and silver medal and an industry award. This month also proved a major celebration for the Mount Morgan Ambulance; marking its 100th birthday (above right).

August

August saw Mount Morgan celebrate another favourite event on the local calendar; the Mount Morgan Agricultural Show (pictured left - Jacob and Keziah Dodd and centre - Peter Edman). August also saw the return of Flipside Circus to Mount Morgan (pictured right), Senior Week celebrations, and the official opening of the Gloria Crosbie Depot at the Mount Morgan Showgrounds.

September

September kicked off with the Silver Wattle fun day (pictured) - the new community event celebrating National Wattle Day and Mount Morgan’s very own wattle. This month also announced the winners for the 2013 Betascapes Spring Garden Spectacular; which saw locals, Terry and Dian Kelleher scoop up a Champion award along with two encouragement awards.

October

October proved another month of local events and celebrations.

A fundraiser hosted by locals, Brian and Carol Stock saw an impressive $6,000 donated to the Leukemia Foundation, past students and staff of the Sacred Heart School (pictured) unearthed a time capsule after 25 years, and students of Mount Morgan High entertained with their annual variety night. This month also saw the Hot Bread Shop celebrate its 21st birthday and the Welfare Bowls Club celebrate its 95th.

November

December

Last month kicked off with an exciting new addition for the Mount Morgan School of Arts – a brand new stage curtain. This month also included Mount Morgan High’s annual awards night, graduation day for Mount Morgan’s Year 12 students (pictured - photo by Mark Chapman) and Remembrance Day 2013.

Along with the highlights featured in this issue, this month has seen more than $1,800 raised for the typhoon victims in the Philippines, following a fundraiser held on the 7th.

Mountain Mick’s “Christmas Turkien” Method:

The first two things I do is mix up the mince stuffing (turkey and pork mince, garlic, Italian herbs, bread crumbs & egg) and de-bone the chickens. Take out every bone and cut the double bone and tip a bit of the wing off, (you can ask your butcher to do this for you - just let them know you need it boned out from the back of the bird so the breast stays together).

Next, lay the bird out on a clean cutting board skin side down. Take the tenderloins of the breast and fill in a gap in between the thigh and the breast. Now place a layer of sun dried tomato to cover the whole inside of the bird. Now cover this with a complete layer of streaky bacon. Then, cover with 1/3 of the bottle of cranberry jelly - use a spoon to cover all the bacon. Now take 1/3 of the turkey/pork mixture and cover all of jelly.

For a long time now the idea of a steaming hot Christmas lunch has disappeared from our Christmas menu, replaced with an array of cold meat and icy cold seafood… so here goes, Merry Christmas to one and all. This is an idea for a chilled Christmas lunch: Creamy German Potato Salad, Balsamic Green Bean Salad served “TurKien” - a deboned whole chicken stuffed with layers of sun dried tomato, streaky bacon, cranberry jelly and a turkey/pork mince mix seasoned with garlic and Italian herb mix, with a balsamic reduction glaze, all served icy cold…

This Recipe is for 3 “Turkiens” - just divide by three if you only need one. Yes, if you don’t like turkey, just use all pork and the name becomes a “Porkien” - you can also use beef mince and make a “BeefKien”. You can also use cooked rice and dried fruit mix for either a “Ricekien or a Fruitkien” and you can change the sun dried tomatoes to chargrilled capsicum. It’s you Christmas so make yourself happy.

Now the fun part... roll both sides of the bird together and tie up with the butchers twine into a nice Christmas parcel.

At this point in time, I use my own spice rub - you can leave it plain or add whatever you like, (maybe with honey & mustard, or even Cranberry jelly or lemon pepper- it’s up to you).

Bake at 180 for 1 and a ½ hours or until the center of the stuffed bird is 75C internal temperature and golden brown. You can eat it hot or cold, as part of a light Christmas luncheon or as part of a Christmas feast with all the trimmings. So again, from my family and I, Merry Christmas to all and to all a Good Night. See you back in 2014.

P.S. watch out for the Snow White Boomer on the way to Gracemere I have seen him 3 times, maybe he is one of Santa’s Boomers.
