BEGINNINGS AND ENDINGS

“Good leaders understand that success is not a destination. Nor is failure.” These were the opening words of Acting Principal, Mr James Lye as he addressed the 2024 Seniors, Captains and House Captains at the Mount Morgan State High School Leaders induction and 112th School Birthday Celebration on 5 February. While the Year 12 cohort are gearing up for a year of “last opportunities”, Year Seven students are just beginning their High School journey. In addressing the Year 12 Students and Leaders, Mr Lye said wearing a badge looked great. “It’s shiny, it shows that you have a title. However, does it show you as a leader - someone who will have the courge to show confidence in that which you believe and to follow the values and beliefs, bringing others with you,” he said. “Modelling what you believe to be the right actions, regardless of what others may see as sometimes the more popular course of direction is the challenge that good leaders accept.”

For Year 12 students, Mystique Lemire (back left) and Kasia Davis (front right) 2024 will be a year of endings while for Farrah Kenny (back right) and Rylie-Rose Kavanagh it will be a year of beginnings.

Mr Lye said leadership was about character and learning. Continued on Page 5

GIANT picture book giveaway @ Mount Morgan Library

‘’A free picture book? How good is that!” “Thank you – it’s great that my child could choose which book he wanted.” These were just some of the comments heard at the Mount Morgan Library last year at the 2023 International Book Giving Day event. This year the free book giveaway is on again, providing an opportunity for families of young children to drop into the Mount Morgan Library on Wednesday, 14 February to choose their very own picture book to take home. Young children aged up to five years who are signed up to become library members will also receive a free First Five Forever bag filled with lots of early literacy goodies (and not just on this special day; this offer is available throughout the whole year). All you need to do is to bring ID with your current address to the library to sign up, and – best of all library membership is free! But wait, there’s more! Local businesses who would like to receive a free First 5 Forever Kit of fifteen quality picture books to place in their waiting rooms or reception areas can also request this at your local library. Last year over 175 kits were distributed across the Rockhampton Region, to medical centres, laundromats, hairdressers, cafes, garages,

early childhood centres and more, ensuring that families of young children have the opportunity to browse and read with their child while they are waiting. The free picture book giveaway will take place on Wednesday 14 February at all library branches during normal opening hours. The Mount Morgan Library is located at 31 Morgan Street, Mount Morgan and is open 9:00am-1:00pm and 2:00pm5:00pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. FROM TRUCKED WATER TO DAM WATER

Sourced from Facebook With the subsequent filling and overflow of the Number 7 Dam, Rockhampton Regional Council will soon be switching over to utilizing No.7 Dam water while awaiting the completion of the pipeline construction. A media statement from Rockhampton Regional Council outlined Council’s commitment to utilising the No. 7 Dam to supply water to Mount Morgan, with Council currently working through the process to recommission the Mount Morgan Water Treatment Plant. Council is preparing the raw water line from the dam to the treatment plant as well as undertaking a test and trial phase to manage water quality to ensure that it consistently achieves drinking water guidelines. Council will continue to work through this process and will provide further updates in the coming weeks. “Council is mindful of the challenges the ongoing Level Six water restrictions bring to the Mount Morgan community; and the patience and resilience the community has shown over the past three years as Council lobbied for and secured a permanent water supply to the town,” the statement said. According to Water and Environment Sustainability Councillor, Donna Kirkland, upgrades on the Mount Morgan Water Treatment plant had commenced prior

to Christmas in anticipation that the dam would fill. Cr Kirkland said water testing had commenced and may be finished as early as the end of February. Cr Kirkland said if all went according to plan a staged transition including a mixture of dam and trucked in water would be utilized for the initial period, until Council was confident that the treatment plant was operational as a stand-alone system. Cr Kirkland said water pipes from the dam to the treatment plant would also be cleaned before pumping commenced. “This system hasn’t been used for a while,” she said. “Once the water quality is at the standard it needs to be, Council will cease trucking water to Mount Morgan,” she said. Cr Kirkland said blue-green algae was still present but with the utilization of the treatment plant, would not restrict bringing the water to a potable standard. Continued testing of the No. 7 Dam water would ensure that water is of the necessary standard for community use. “The long-term goal is to finish the pipeline and decommission the No. 7 Dam as a potable water source,” she said.

FINGERLING RELEASE SET FOR MARCH With the recent oveflow of No 7 Dam Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc [MMPAD] is set to recommence fingerlings release in the No 7 Dam. This is being done under the guidelines of the current restocking permit and release plan issued by Department of Agriculture and Fisheries to MMPAD for No 7 Dam Mount Morgan. MMPAD President, Mr John Steinberger said we could not let this opportunity pass by. “We have placed a purchase order from Hanwood Hatchery with the expectation of delivery of 8,200 Page 4

golden perch fingerlings in March,” Mr Steinberger said. “It will be great to have fishing back at the dam and form part of the aquatic playground experience in our dam, he said. The fingerlings, after release take around 18 months to reach a good size. “We hope to undertake fingerling release annually in line with our release program, this is to keep the stocks up,” Mr Steinberger said.

Continued...from Page 1 “Are you a leader who is prepared to dream pursue something better.?” he asked. “Leadership is about character and learning. We need to know what is admirable in ourselves, in order to be role models for those with whom we work. Because we are not perfect, there is always room for us to grow, and for our school to become a better place,” he said. “To our Seniors, you will be experiencing a lot of different emotions and events throughout the year. You completed your last first day of school. You will have your last sporting carnivals and your last school photos. Each of these times are important and a great time to reflect.” “Like the leaders being awarded their badges, you too have a task. What will be your legacy?”

The ceremony included Year 12 students receiving their Senior badges and certificates and the School Captains and House Captains receiving their badges. School Captains for 2024 are Kasia Davis and Mystique Lemire (pictured above cutting the School Birthday cake). House Captains were - Chantelle Berry and Mystique Lemire (Paterson), Serenity Anderson,Thomas Tull and La’Zariah Leisha (Gordon) and Kasia Davis and Noah Kielly (Kendall).

NOTHING BUT BLUE SKIES

Above: The Dingle Family - Jemma, Emilia, Matt, Harper and Isla. Below: Feeding her “chicken addiction”, Jemma cuddles one of the new chickens. Serendipity is defined as “good luck in making unexpected and fortunate discoveries” and this is what Matt and Jemma Dingle have done with taking on “Blue Sky Heritage Eggs” – a former Biloela-based company that was put on the market in October last year. It was serendipitous for Jemma, a self-confessed chicken addict, that this advert appeared on Facebook while Jemma and Matt were looking around for a business opportunity. Jemma and Matt purchased the “Blue Sky Heritage” name which allows them options if they decide to branch off into another form of food productions. “Since Covid we have become more aware of where our food came from and we have been looking around for opportunities,” Jemma said. Jemma and Matt purchased 430 acres at Walmul, about 10 km outside of Mount Morgan, moved a “chicken tractor” in place and were waiting for their Page 6

To assist with looking after 300 chickens, they have the assistance of Maremmas (livestock guardian dogs}. “I originally wasn’t aware that they needed to be trained so extensively to protect chickens– I thought that their abilities were mostly instinctive,” she said. She has nine dogs – three of which are not being trained to look after chickens. Another serendipitous occurrence was that she was able to obtain two Maremmas that have been trained to guard chickens. It takes about two years to train the dogs. Jemma is excited about the venture and the possibilities before her. “There are so many “what-ifs’, but we can’t really plan until we get everything in place, it is very exciting,” she said.

Above: Young chickens arrive at the Walmul farm. Below: Schroeder and “Piggy”. chickens to arrive… which happened on 9 February with the delivery of 300 Hiline red chickens to site. Since October 2023, Jemma has been reading extensively and paving the way for residents from Mount Morgan and surrounding areas to eat fresh free-range eggs. This has included converting a shed into an air-conditioned egg processing facility and obtaining Food Safety accreditation. Jemma, who is a Workplace Health and Safety Officer, revels in paperwork and the hoop-jumping prowess required to wade through the legislative requirements was right up her alley! Working from home enables Jemma to be available to look after the egg-production venture while Matt is away working as an electrician at Curragh Mine.

As mentioned earlier, Jemma loves chickens. Prior to this venture, Jemma had four chickens – but soon the addiction got out of hand and suddenly she had 75 chickens of varying varieties. The “chicken tractor” at full capacity will fit 600 chickens, so the 300 recent arrivals are purely a starting point for Jemma but should help out with her chicken addiction. “They are very therapeutic animals. Often, I will go to the chicken run with a cup of coffee and just watch them, peck and scratch around,” she said. It will be a few weeks before freerange eggs will be available to the public, but it certainly will be worth the wait.

Jemma and Matt also purchased the Hamilton Creek residence where Tygala Kennels once operated from and have also been renovating this for the past few months. This residence was once the Hamilton Creek School house. Jemma, who grew up behind Tygala Kennels and would help Mrs Sue Macintyre take care of the dogs loved the house and was always interested in buying the property. When it first came on the market, the couple weren’t ready to purchase, but then it came on the market again and they were lucky enough to be in a position to acquire the property – although there is certainly some renovations that have to be done. “Everything seemed to fall into place for the purchase,” she said. Serendipity at work again! 14 - 28 February 2024

MIRANI MESSAGE With Stephen Andrew, MP A long-running water shortage in Mount Morgan has finally broken with Dam No. 7 overflowing for the first time in many years. That’s such an enormous thing for leisure sports, fishing and the great impacts it will have for tourism. Rockhampton Regional Council officers commenced the process to recommission the Mount Morgan Water Treatment Plant prior to Christmas in anticipation of high rainfall. As the water treatment plant has been offline for almost three years, it will need some work to be recommissioned. Residents in Mount Morgan have been on strict Level Six water restrictions since March 2021. They’ve had to rely on about 20 truckies to come into the town each day or the past 34 months carting water tankers from Gracemere. This costs between $10,000 to $17,000 a day – to date totalling $25.8 million. Once the transition back to using the treated dam water has commenced, water restrictions may be lessened. The first pipes for the $88.2 million Mount Morgan pipeline have been laid along Kabra Road. The 28km potable water pipeline will provide longterm water security to Mount Morgan, providing certainty and prosperity to the community. Significant construction will soon progress with development of the new reservoirs, pump stations and widening of Razorback Road will commence later in 2024. These works will also support projected growth in Gracemere, ensuring the community has the water security needed to grow and thrive. The project is anticipated to be completed in September 2025, weather permitting. Rookwood Weir has filled and spilled for the first time on 27 December last year, less than a month after its official construction completion. As water continues to flow from upstream catchments, as at 30 January, the weir is at 102.47 per cent capacity. As the cost of living continues to hit the hip pocket, the cost of some of the region’s biggest infrastructure projects have also seen their price tags rise. Queensland Budget estimates last year revealed the Rookwood Weir project skyrocketed by $200 million over budget – that’s a 55 per cent cost over-run. The project is forecast to cost $568.2 million compared to its original budget of $367.2 million, with the extra Page 10

cost to be carried by Sunwater, statutory Queensland Government-owned corporation. I was in Mount Morgan last week to complete our new office refurbishment at the Soldiers Rooms which will be an essential service and asset to the community of Mount Morgan and surrounds. The office will be open every Tuesday commencing 13 February 2024, 9am to 2pm Other days and times to be confirmed following engagement with community to meet your needs and better represent you, reflecting your concerns in the Parliament.

Mount Morgan Rotary Club will host the annual Alex Teeney Memorial Bowls Day on Sunday, 17 March at the Welfare Bowls Club. The late Alex Teeney OAM was a wonderful Mount Morgan citizen, an active Rotarian, and an Irishman. Hence the theme for the fun-day is Irish. Participants are asked to dress up as Irish or wear something green if they wish. The fun starts at 9.00am and finishes with a BBQ lunch organized by the Mount Morgan Rotary Club. Multi raffles will be held, and prizes will be given to the best dressed and best teams. Anybody can have a go and teams of three or four will compete for the Alex Teeney Memorial Shield. The main idea is to have a bit of fun, lots of laughs, and meet some new friends. It’s not a day to take yourself too seriously. The event is run to raise funds for Rotary’s major international project of eliminating Polio from the Earth. This project became a whole of world event in 1985 and only Pakistan and Afghanistan still have the wild polio virus circulating. Good progress is now being achieved in these countries which have been difficult to work with in the past. The job is nearly done but not quite, so we need more funds to complete the task, Mr Edmonston said. Ongoing immunization of children under the age of five will continue until there are zero cases for three years and the world can be declared free of the dreaded disease, only the second disease completely eradicated. The only other deadly disease to be eradicated from the world is Smallpox which was declared gone in 1980. Every dollar raised from events such as the Alex Teeney Bowls Day will help achieve this magnificent program first launched by Rotary in the Philippines in 1979.

Mount Morgan State High School has a new face in the top seat. Mr James Lye (pictured) is Acting Principal for the next months while Mr Dan Petersen is on leave from High School. James, who has been an educator for over 20 years, started his teaching career as an English teacher, but has also taught History, Geography and Media. He has worked both for both private and State educational institutions. He has also taught in primary schools. Continued on Page 15

MOUNT MORGAN ARGUS

14- 28 February 2024

New Principal...From Page 14 According to James while both State and Private institutions have different challenges, he prefers to teach in State Schools. “Both have pros and cons, but I have had more opportunities to advance my career in leadership roles,” he said. James has worked in medium rural-regional schools. Some of these have been in low socio-economic communities such as Mount Morgan. His main appointment is as Deputy Principal of Glenmore State High School, but in recent years he has worked in Moura and Blackall in acting roles. During his short time in Mount Morgan, he has discovered that the community is a very “hands on” community. “Some of my former colleagues who have worked here have indicated how good the school was –

they’ve always had something nice to say about the school,” he said. “Mount Morgan State High have achieved some wonderful things and there have been some great initiatives.” “I have really enjoyed my time here – the staff and students are great,” he said. Education for James is a passion. “I love working with young people and there are so many pathways for students these days. Instead of doing their school, going to university and then getting a job, a student can do their school, start an apprenticeship or certificate and even start university.” What’s on the agenda for James until the end of Semester One. He will be heavily involved in the four-year Strategic Plan which has been informed through the School Review process. The Strategic Plan documents how Mount Morgan State High School moves forward.

NEW OIC AT MOUNT MORGAN QAS

Dominque, as a young girl growing up on the Sunshine Coast, was heavily involved in life saving, which led to her becoming a Paramedic. “I was fortunate enough to be taught the lifesaver role by senior life savers who were career Paramedics. I was shown the importance of serving the community and providing assistance to people in real time and I was inspired by this to make Paramedicine my career also,” she said. Dominque lives in Frenchville in Rockhampton and is married to Brodie who is a Senior Constable with the Queensland Police Service at Gracemere. They have two children, aged two and six. “In my spare time, I love spending time with my family and making memories,” she said. Her career has been a rewarding one and she is currently unable to see herself in another career.

Mount Morgan Queensland Ambulance Service has a new Officer in Charge. Dominque Johnson (pictured) started work at Mount Morgan Station on 29 January 2024. With 13 years as a Paramedic, Dominque has worked throughout Queensland starting with Mareeba as her first station. She has also worked at Cairns, Julia Creek, the Sunshine Coast, stations in Rockhampton and Marlborough. She first commenced her Officer in Charge journey at Julia Creek and has worked in the role at various stations since. 14 - 28 February 2024

“I love making people feel better, safe and reassured, being a Paramedic gives me the opportunity to provide this to my community. Being an Officer In Charge gives me the opportunity to provide this for the Paramedics, it’s the best of both worlds,” she said. Dominque hasn’t had a chance to have a look around Mount Morgan, but she has been enjoying the scenery along the Razorback on her drives to and from work and is happy to take recommendations on what to see from the locals.
