Rockhampton Region Mayor Tony Williams said launching the new app will be great for the region as it will encourage visitors to spend more time experiencing Rockhampton’s unique attractions.

Riverside Public Art Trail.

“Rockhampton’s Quay Street is Australia’s longest National Trust heritage-listed street, and taking a stroll down the street and learning about its history is just one of the self-guided tours available on the app,” Mayor Williams said. “I applaud the Advance Rockhampton team for developing an app where visitors can tour our region at their own leisure, and interact more closely with our community when they are taking self-guided tours.” Advance Rockhampton Executive Manager Greg Bowden said the Explore Rockhampton Self-Guided Tours App will help drive the local economy further through increased tourism spending.

To download the free app, head to the Apple App Store or Google Play and search for ‘Explore Rockhampton’. Once the app is downloaded, you will be able to access each tour by opening the app on your smart device. Visit explorerockhampton.com.au/tours for more information and to view a website-enabled version. “Self-guided tours provide visitors with another way of experiencing a city, and with a wealth of these free tours available to explore on the app, tourists will be encouraged to extend their stay and explore our region further,” Mr Bowden said. “By adding an asset to the region’s overall tourism offering and encouraging visitors to extend their stay, more tourism dollars will be spent in our region, benefitting our local economy.” Advance Rockhampton Manager of Tourism and Events Annette Pearce said the Explore Rockhampton Self-Guided Tours App has six tours currently on offer, with a number of new tours expected in the coming months. “The Explore Rockhampton Self-Guided Tours App currently has six tours offering a range of different experiences, from taking a self-guided tour to learn about our heritage and history right through to exploring Rockhampton’s riverside public art trail,” Ms Pearce said. “The beauty of the app is that visitors can explore our region at their own leisure and pace, and the app has functionality to pause a tour if visitors want to take a break and grab a cup of coffee or stop along the way for lunch. “Advance Rockhampton’s tourism team will be launching the app far and wide, and will work with the region’s local tourism operators to educate 12 - 26 May 2021

CHILDREN OF CHANGE - A MEMOIR

Former Mount Morgan resident and now author, Carole Kelly (nee Humphreys) was in Mount Morgan for a book signing of her recently released book, Children of Change - A Memoir. This powerful and immensely nostalgic story centres around Olympic hopeful, Chloe, whose promising career as a swimmer is devastatingly shut down at the age of 14 by a rape and its ensuing pregnacy. The book signing took place at Wattle Bee Next and provided an opportunity for acquaintances to be renewed. Pictured top left: Carole with Colleen Constable, bottom left with Lorraine Johnson and above, Carole with brother Mark Humphreys. The books are available at Wattle Bee Next and the Mount Morgan Visitor Information Centre.

Mount Morgan Central State School P & C Engraved Bricks Thank you for everyone’s patience, the engraved bricks have been laid, and the space is nearing completion. Named “Interspace” meaning the space between two things, the new paved seating area was aptly titled due to the social distancing measures required during the time of its conception, and ironically where what led to the delays in construction. Much appreciation goes to Christian, Deb and Davey for their volunteered labour, and to Sunbrix who supplied sand and pavers on a very flexible timeline. Thank you also to UNICEF who provided the grant dollars to extend the area beyond the engraved pavers, and for the seating. Please sign in at the office, if you wish to enter school grounds to view your paver. Thank you mostly to all who purchased bricks, we will be taking orders ongoing, with a view to order and install approximately once every year and a half. Due to future orders being under 100 bricks which qualified us for free freight, prices have been raised to $60 per paver. For order forms, email mtmorganpnccss@mail.com. Did you know that Library and Information Week is celebrated on 17 – 23 May? This is a time when we celebrate libraries and information services and the people who make these services great! The theme for Library and Information Week 2021 is ‘Adventures in space and time’. How can I celebrate? There are many ways to celebrate Library and Information Week. Take an adventure in space by visiting a new location (try visiting a new library branch!), find a new favourite reading spot or learn about a new place. Another way to celebrate is to use your library! Rockhampton Regional Libraries have branches in Mount Morgan, Gracemere, South Rockhampton and North Rockhampton plus a great range of online services you can access any time, from any space! National Simultaneous Storytime National Simultaneous Storytime is a yearly event where schools, childcares centres, libraries and individuals read the same story at the same time. This year the event takes place at 11am on Wednesday 19 May and the Simultaneous Storytime book is Give me some space! by Queensland author Philip Bunting. DEE RIVER OLDIES With the restrictions of COVID in place, when planning to have the May long weekend celebrations and the not knowing what was ahead made the long weekend very different this year. It was so good to see the people that came back to the Mount for the reunions and the rodeo. Catching up with people you haven’t seen in a very long time was great. Before COVID you could travel anywhere in the world, and there was always someone who knew someone from the Mount. Let us hope that we can get back to what we have known for the last forty-four years and have great markets and parade next year.

which will include the bus trip and lunch. The April morning tea was interesting, with Kellie ‘the Gadget Lady’ displaying gadgets that make your days a little easier. She had an array of different items that was good to see. Our meetings and morning teas are held in St Mary’s Hall, Gordon Street, Mount Morgan. (Behind the Anglican Church). The May monthly meeting is on Tuesday, 18 May 2021 starting at 2 pm. New members are welcome. Come along and see what the group is about. The musical morning tea is on Wednesday, 26 May 2021. The cost is $5. There will be a raffle and a lucky door.

The Dee River Oldies Group are proposing to have a bus trip to the Callaghan Park Markets on Sunday, 6 June 2021. We need the numbers to make this happen. Let Carol or Colleen know if you are interested. (Phone numbers below). The cost is $50

RURAL FIRE BRIGADE POWERS AHEAD The Brigade has had a number of new recruits join in 2021. These recruits have now completed initial training and have qualified as firefighters, enabling them to work on fire grounds. Training includes an initial firefighting course emphasising safety, using firefighting equipment and firefighting skills. In addition, members received first aid training.

The Calliungal RFS brigade exists to serve the community of Mount Morgan and its surrounds. If you are interested in knowing more or helping, please contact the First Officer Kevin Coughran on 0497 518 906.

The new building program will see a new undercover storage area for the Brigade’s vehicles, a new training area, office and communication area, kitchen and toilet and shower facilities provided. This will significantly increase the ability of the bridge to protect the communities surrounding Mount Morgan in event of wild fires and help to support other agencies, responding to other emergencies. Brigade First Officer, Kevin Coughran said the development of new facilities would have not have been mad possible without community support. “In particular, I would like to thank Stephen Andrew the Member for Mirani, the Queensland fire and Emergency Services, IGA Mount Morgan, Alan Housman Builders, T and C Field, Kevin Daniel’s Bob Cat Hire, Leon Dingo Hire, Rockhampton Mini Loads, Ant Landscaping, Sunbrix Sand and Soil and the community of Mount Morgan and its surrounds for their assistance in seeing the vision for a state of the art Brigade facility move towards reality. VET NEWS What is considered an emergency? As a loving pet owner, it’s natural to be concerned about your pet if they’re unwell, and to want prompt diagnosis and treatment. But what is actually considered a medical or surgical emergency for pets? Common symptoms that suggest a condition requiring urgent treatment can include: • Inability to pass urine • Difficulty breathing • Seizures • White or very pale gums • Noticeable sudden belly bloating with discomfort • Sudden wobbliness or weakness • Steady bleeding from a wound • Profuse vomiting or diarrhoea, especially if it contains blood • Significant mental dullness • Fainting If you suspect that your pet has been bitten by a snake or eaten something they shouldn’t have (e.g., a non-food item that could get stuck, or a toxin such as rat bait or human medication), you should call us first and then bring them in for immediate assessment, as these issues are best treated early. Any condition or injury that causes your pet severe pain for more than a few minutes also warrants an urgent vet visit.

Deslea’s Cutz for Mutz Mobile Dog Clipping Phone Des: 0447 275 402

This can include traumatic injuries, such as if your pet has had a fall from a reasonable height, been hit by a vehicle or attacked by another animal. If a very young animal becomes unwell, or if your pet which has an ongoing serious health condition becomes unwell, these are best assessed quickly, as these pets often have less capacity to fight illness and can deteriorate quickly.

The bottom line? If you’re worried about your pet, give us a call! Our preference is always to ensure your pet is okay and to set your mind at ease. Additionally, many conditions can be treated quickly and easily if caught early.

Headmistress, Miss Hardy & Mount Morgan Girls’ & Infants’ School

‘… Mt Morgan loses an old and respected resident, known by scholars now grown to men and women in every part of Queensland … Miss Hardy was the second daughter of the late Captain Phillip Hardy, the first man to navigate a ship up the Fitzroy River … She was born in Gladstone on June 6, 1858, one year before Queensland was proclaimed a separate colony … Miss Hardy had a long record of service with the Education Department, being 45 years a headmistress [from 1878 to 1923]. Beginning her teaching career at the Allenstown School, Rockhampton, she went to Bundaberg as headteacher … in 1906 she took charge of the Mt Morgan Girls' and Infants' School. She remained in charge of this school until her retirement in December, 1923. She always took a personal interest in all who came under her care and was held in the highest esteem by her pupils and staff. She also took a keen interest in all philanthropic work … and her work during the war period [First World War] will be long remembered …’ (‘Miss C. Hardy’, The Central Queensland Herald (Rockhampton, Qld. : 1930-1956), 8 April 1937).

THE ORANGE DOT By Larry at Fox Video

Movie Review

SUMMERLAND The V2 rockets flying overhead in London in 1945 sounded like they were powered by a Volkswagen engine set at cruising speed on the highway. By now the people of London were used to being bombed and very familiar with these V2’s. There was no panic but they watched the rocket come in and fly over, waiting and listening for the sputter sputter of the engine cutting out. When the engine died and the V2 flew on in silence they knew its descent had begun and they could work out roughly where the bomb was going to hit by trajectory and time elapsed. From the bombings during the London Blitz after the Battle of Britain in late 1940 and early 1941, to the V2’s of April 1945, plus all of the sporadic bombings by the Nazis in between, 70,000 Britains lost their lives, 30,000 of them were Londoners. Very early on in the war the British people decided to protect their children their future generations from the Nazi bombs. They loaded the kids into trains, boats and buses and evacuated them out of the targeted cities, shipping them to points far and wide all over the country.

The children had to leave their families behind. They were all alone together. Some were sent to stay with relatives but many were shipped to strangers who had volunteered to look after them. Scared, lonely, apprehensive about what and who lay ahead, these little guys spread out in all directions like ants. In 1945 Alice Lamb, working at her typewriter, lives in a cottage by the seaside in Kent which borders London’s eastern boundary and is home to the Archbishops of Canterbury. One of the original Historic counties, it is a timeless and enchanting world where summer brings achingly beautiful sun-dappled days by the sea. Fiercely independent, brusque and reclusive writer Alice (fabulous Gemma Arterton) secludes herself in her study. Haunted by a great love affair from her past she buries herself in her work. The local children think that this strange loner is a witch and they constantly harass her, much to Alice’s chagrin. One day out of the blue, as part of the war effort a young boy evacuated from the London bombings is entrusted into her

care. How dare they dump this child on her? Alice had not volunteered to be a host and does not want to care for him. It will interfere with her important work researching mythology and folklore... However, believing that he has nowhere else to go (and that she can get rid of him in a week) she reluctantly allows young Frank to stay - for now. But soon Frank’s vulnerability, his innocence, wonder and awe begin to awaken and unlock deeply buried and imprisoned emotions within Alice... From award-winning Director Jessica Swale, SUMMERLAND inspires with daringly honest and contemporary themes; an intensely emotional journey of selfdiscovery, love and friendship. SUMMERLAND is a treat for the whole family and runs for 99 wonderful minutes. SUMMERLAND - Love. Magic. Hope...Loved it!

STRUMMING UP A STORM

Members of the Gladstone Ukelele Club were in Mount Morgan over the May Day weekend, setting up a makeshift workshop at the Silver Wattle Caravan Park. Some members of the Club had visited Mount Morgan tagging along with Graham Rodger in February of this year. They liked the atmosphere of the Caravan Park and decided to come back for their jam session. Park owners David and Debi also ensured that the members had a great time, offering up an evening meal and games in between the jam sessions. The Gladstone players were joined by members of the Mount Ukes of an evening.
