After all the successful weekends we have enjoyed, firstly the motorcycle carnival, how good was that for our town. Congratulations to Peter and Paul and your willing team for getting so many bikes enthusiasts to our town. Then we had the celebration of Anzac Day which was well attended and the occasion was sincerely and respectfully carried out. The Golden Mount Festival as good as ever and never seems to lose the attraction for exMount Morganites to come home and enjoy themselves and meet up with old friends. Well done to all! It was a delight to see the Mount Morgan Newsagency building showing off with a new look of lovely fresh paint colours in time for all celebrations. Well done to Schae and Kerrilyn. Setting a great example for the area! Now, it is back to reality so a few more “Historical Snippets” come to the fore front and we begin with the year 1960. This year celebrated the second “Back to Mount Morgan Week” which was conducted from October first to ninth. After the successful week in 1950 this second event was equally enjoyed by the many visitors who returned to the town. The Chairman of the Shire then was Mr James Carmody who acted as the Chairman of the organizing committee as well. He was a busy man that year for sure. The year 1960 also marked the foundation of the town’s acting group which became known as the “Mount Morgan Amateur Players”, with Mr Noel Ward being the first President while Mr O. Wilson was the first president of the Management Committee. This group had many successful years of presenting plays locally and also when entering into the yearly Drama Festival held in Rockhampton - on many occasions they came away with a number of the awards. The Club did have some wonderful talent in its numbers and some went on to bigger acting careers and stage work. After different venues where their plays were presented they finally found their home in the building which now houses our Historical Museum, corner of Morgan and East Streets. Finally in 1960 the Mount Morgan Shire Council adopted its own “official flag” of blue and gold background depicting the Mine stack in the centre with the Evening Star just behind it to the right. It was designed by the Shire Clerk, Mr Harry Fitzgerald. That flag was at the Shire Council M.M. Office till 2008 but sadly, cannot be located at the present time but we will keep trying to find it. As usual we hope you will “Think Clean – Be Tidy,” and use the bins.

It has been ninety nine years since the landing at Gallipoli, and the ANZAC spirit is still very much alive and well. Friday, April 25 saw thousands around the country honour the actions of our Diggers, and pay respects to our past and present servicemen and servicewomen. For Mount Morgan, commemorations commenced with a Dawn Service held at ANZAC Park, which saw the attendance of around 60 people. As with each past Dawn Service, the atmosphere of the ceremony was solemn, as the crowd of faithful supporters gathered in silence under a still starry sky to honour those who have scarified so much for the nation. The Dawn Service was later followed by the annual ANZAC Day March, held mid morning (pictured above). Crowds lined the Central Business Area to witness the march; applauding the Veterans, school students and local organisation representatives proudly taking part. The marchers made their way through Morgan Street and on to ANZAC Park for the day’s 11am Service. They made up part of the ceremony’s 300 attendees. The crowd was made up of a mixture of generations, joined together to celebrate the ANZAC spirit – something which Mount Morgan RSL Sub Branch President, Mike Johnston (pictured right) described as integral during the ANZAC Day address. “The men and women who forged the ANZAC spirit made sure that those who led them earned their respect. They all understood the values of independence, freedom and fairness and, above all, possessed a willingness to defend these things if need be,” Mr Johnston recited during the service. “Because freedom only survives as long as people are willing to defend it. That is the spirit ANZAC handed down to us. If we lose that ANZAC spirit, we lose all.
“So here we stand today, along with thousands of others to honour great men and women and a great tradition. We gather, as we shall always gather, not to glorify war, but to remind ourselves that we value who we are and the freedoms we possess, and to acknowledge the courage and sacrifice of those who contributed so much in shaping the identity of this proud nation, and those who continue to serve.” The Mount Morgan RSL Sub Branch sincerely thanks all who attended the day’s commemorations.

With its rich minerals, advanced mining techniques, development and local identities – there’s no denying that Mount Morgan has a history to be proud of. This is something the team at the Mount Morgan Historical Museum know all too well. The group help showcase the area’s past each day; presenting a range of exhibits that detail a bygone era and shed light of some of the area’s most influential local individuals. The Museum has recently added to its displays further, with a special recognition to the area’s former servicemen and servicewomen.
The exhibit was officially opened by Mount Morgan Historical Museum President, Mick Bruce on ANZAC Day.
-
The display, which has been four months in the making, tells a fine example of Mount Morgan’s contribution to past war efforts, and the invaluable service and sacrifice made by members of its community. The exhibit includes focus on the Light Horse, Hill 60, Indigenous contributions, and service with the Air force, Navy, Army and Red Cross. The Historical Museum team said they are aiming to extend the display, with more plans set for next year, to pay special tribute to ANZAC Cove and its 100 year anniversary. The WWI 100th Anniversary Exhibit is located in the second gallery of the museum, and is available for viewing 7 days a week, from 10am to 4pm. For further details, please phone the Mount Morgan Museum on: 49382 122. Pictured: Members of the Historical Museum: Shirley, Bobbie, Sherryl and Gwen.

While Mount Morgan has seen many changes over the years, there’s one thing that seems certain to remain – we just can’t get enough of the Golden Mount Festival. Last weekend saw the local area come alive as thousands celebrated Mount Morgan and its well known heritage with the popular annual event. The celebrations kicked off with a bang last Friday evening, with a family fun night at the Mount Morgan Dam. A substitute for the traditional Labour Day holiday event, the evening again proved a success, marking the second year being part of the Festival’s programme. The day’s earlier heavy rainfall wasn’t enough to damper festival goers’ spirits and the event welcomed a steady crowd throughout. The evening offered stalls, amusement rides and live entertainment, along with an outstanding fireworks display (pictured bottom right). The official opening was conducted by Councillor Cherie Rutherford, with traditional dance and Welcome to Country by Zandalee Anderson. A talking point of the evening was the dedication to the area’s Chinese heritage – which included a Lion Dance, carried out by members of the Chinese Association of Rockhampton. Also included as part of the special recognition and one of the many highlights of the night was the release of floating wishing candles across the Dam’s waters (pictured top). Local talent: Whiskey Remorse was among the great lineup for Friday’s entertainment.
A roaring good time: The Lion Dance by the Chinese Association of Rockhampton.
7
It was then on to Morgan Street for day two of the Festival, which included a full day of fun and entertainment on Saturday. Crowds were kept busy with the variety of street markets, live entertainment and amusement rides on offer, along with the annual favourite programme highlights and iconic competitions.
Clowning around: Local residents Jenna Larson and Holly Cant enjoying the festivities on Saturday.
Pumped up: Local resident Victoria Connolly accepts an animal balloon during Saturday’s celebrations.
The atmosphere throughout the day proved cheerful; a reflection of this year’s festival theme “comedy”. The theme was well supported in the day’s entertainment and roving acts.
8
This year’s programme also saw the introduction of a Photography and Arts competition at the Mount Morgan School of Arts as part of Saturday’s lineup. Local resident Eve-lyn Rogers won Best Landscape and Portrait in the Photography division, with Nicholai Von Tonslamann winning Landscape and Portrait in the Arts category. This year’s street procession proved another highlight of the Festival programme - with this year’s theme of “comedy” seeing a number of local groups and businesses show off their funny side through their float entries. Float winners this year were: Best Float – Kindy Care Mount Morgan Best Group – Silistra Best Character – Tharini Atchison Best Bike – Sandra Ireland Best Small Car - Cream Coupe, Classic Car Club Most humorous - Silver Wattle Caravan Park (pictured below left). The winners made up part of the impressive 50 plus entries in this year’s procession.
The Dig 4 Gold Competition again saw some very lucky participants leave with a whole lot of cash.
Congratulations to Tennyson George who won the Junior Dig for Gold and Chris Peters (pictured right) who took out the Senior Division.

The Running of the Cutter again proved a favourite at this The Junior Railway Hotel team (pictured below) were

Crowds of locals and visitors took the opportunity to continue their weekend of celebrations on Sunday, with a Bush Poets Breakfast at the Newman Oval. This third and final day was then topped off with an afternoon of expert riding and thrills and spills with the annual Golden Mount

From your State MP Anzac Day The ANZAC legend grows stronger, despite the passing of the years and I hope you all stopped in remembrance of the beauty and courage, so willingly offered up, so cruelly cut down in War. It has become the day on which we pay tribute to ALL those servicemen and women who have served in major conflicts and peacekeeping missions. This year marks the beginning of Anzac Centenary initiatives. Between 2014 and 2018 the country will take part in a number of important initiatives, including next year when we mark the Centenary of when Anzac soldiers landed on Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey on 25 April 1915. For more information on the Anzac Centenary visit www.qld.gov.au/anzac100 Indigenous Training A new $4Million strategy has been developed to help indigenous people undertake and complete training that leads to jobs. The strategic Indigenous Vocational Education and Training (VET) partnership will see up to $1 million a year over the next four years invested in accredited training and assessment services that lead to indigenous employment. For more information on the Strategic Indigenous VET Partnership, visit www.training.qld.gov.au/indigenousvetpartnership Strong Choices We all want our Queensland economy to grow stronger, but we have an accumulated debt of $80 billion, with an interest bill of $4 billion every year. We need to lower debt to run our big plans into reality. Strong choices have to be made. It’s time to have your say! Go to the ‘Strong Choices website www.StrongChoices.qld.gov.au to have your say. Submissions close 19th May 2014 Take a Stand We’re cracking down on alcohol and drug-fuelled violence and making sure Queenslanders can have a good time safely. The draft strategy outlines steps to stamp out alcohol and drug related violence, restore responsible behaviour and make sure Queensland’s nightlife is safe for all to enjoy. Some of the key elements of the draft strategy include establishing Safe Night Precincts, mandatory ID scanners in venues trading after midnight in Safe Night Precincts and ‘coward punch’ deaths to be punishable through a new offence of unlawful striking causing death with a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. Don’t let alcohol dictate who you are. If you plan to drink, stop and think.

Red Frog’s worldwide friends
Kindy Care’s Wildlife Encounter
The children at Red Frog have received back their very first Flat Stanley.
Excitement was soaring high at Kindy Care last Tuesday, when our group received a visit from some of the team of Wildlife Encounter.
He went to visit a place called Bryson City in North Carolina. The children from Bryson City wrote us a lovely letter thanking us for sending Stanley to them. They sent us some awesome pictures of Stanley playing with them on the playground, learning all about numbers in the classroom, but his most favourite part of the trip was the great train. It was the same train used in the movie “The Polar Express”. Stanley came back with a broken arm, but we have bandaged his arm and have sent him off on another adventure to another part of the world. I wonder what stories he will tell when he comes back this time. Flat Stanley arrived back from Suffern, New York and they said Stanley is very excited to be heading to Australia! He is wondering if he will see any kangaroos hopping around. He wants pictures sent back to Suffern of famous sites in the area, and pictures of food we eat and animals that live here. Another Flat Stanley went to Welch Elementary in Newnan, Georgia in the USA. Stanley visited two state parks, the beautiful Chattahooche River, picked daffodils, ate outside hot dogs and chips some cashews and energy squares. It turns out Stanley is a great tree climber.
The day welcomed wildlife carer, Anita, to the local kindy care, as well as a very special feathered friend – Mishu the barn owl. The visit saw the children given the opportunity to meet Mishu, as well as discuss the life of an owl with Anita. Anita read a book, ‘I preen my feathers, look around and then listen’, and spoke about the owl’s habitat and how the trees impact on their wellbeing. She allowed the children to ask questions “Why it is called a barn owl?” – Because they are often found in barns hiding from the light. “What they eat?” Mice. The children were then invited to have a photo with the owl, with all of them enjoying the experience. Pictured: Mitchel Dobson gets up close and personal with Mishu. Photo supplied.
Flat Stanley visiting Phillipsburg, NJ Just wanted to check in! Flat Stanley is having quite the adventure (even taking a trip to Baltimore, Maryland)! He has a few more places to visit before we send him back (including the dentist- haha). The children are hoping to return him next week. Pictured: Flat Stanley. Photo and article supplied.

by Trish & Greg Mathers Recently I borrowed a disc from our local library called ‘Kangaroos - Faces In The Mob’. It is a wonderful documentary made over a 2 year period about a mob of Eastern Grey Kangaroos. There were 61 in total in the mob, and it was very interesting to watch the hierarchy and interaction between these animals. One fact I did note was that out of 31 babies born in a 12month period, only 3 survived the first year. The factors that contributed to the poor survival rate was predation by dingoes, feral and domestic dogs, eagles, and habitat loss. It is sad to think that human interference causes so many deaths in these beautiful animals. If we were to take out the dogs and habitat loss there would be a much greater survival rate. Not to mention cars and roadkill. Our wildlife are so unique, people come from all over the world to see it, yet we take them for granted. People can see trees, landscapes and beaches in so many countries, yet only in Australia are they able to see our unique native animals in their natural habitat. Habitat protection is vital to the preservation of our wildlife. There are roughly 170 birds, animals and insects that rely on each and every tree! That is amazing when you think about it. Planting native trees in your yard is a great way to encourage wildlife, as is leaving a small section of your yard to grow wild. Water placed in strategic locations is also a great incentive for the native animals to visit. You just need to remember to make it a safe area from predators.
Creamy Pasta Bake
This a quick one I’ve put together from stuff in the pantry and deep freezer. It’s cheap, easy to put together and tastes awesome! And on these chilly nights, it will warm up everyone’s bellies. Serve as a meal or as side dish with grilled chicken or steak, or even as part of a hot pot banquet. Hope you enjoy it, and this is for the lovely ladies who chatted with me in Allenstown shopping center the other day and asked for a simple and easy recipe with not too many ingredients. Hope I’ve delivered.
Shopping list: • 2 tbl spoons olive oil • 250g of finely diced bacon or speck • 1 large onion • 500g frozen mixed veggies • 2 cloves of crushed garlic • 750ml of skim milk (full cream if you like) • Good pinch of black pepper • Salt to taste • 250ml chicken stock • 2 tbl spoons of parsley flakes • 2 cups of mozzarella cheese • 2 spoons of corn flour, to thicken the milk
How to make it: This photo is of a little Eastern Grey joey that came into care recently. She is a pinkie (furless) and requires feeding every 3 hours around the clock. She also needs to be moisturised frequently as in her mum’s pouch it is always moist. We also have to toilet her. Although she is doing well she has had a few setbacks, such as thrush in her mouth (very common in macropods) and is slightly dehydrated (for which she was treated by the vet.) However, we will do our best for her and hope she continues to thrive.

Now what I do is I cook the pasta in a pot of boiling salty water. Once cooked al dente, drain and put aside. Now fry the onions in the oil. Once they are clear, add the bacon and fry until soft. Add the garlic, parsley, pepper and milk, and bring to the boil. Simmer for 5 minutes. Now mix the cornflour into the stock and add this into the simmering milk - stirring as it thickens. While I’m cooking this sauce, I have the frozen veggies heating up in the microwave for about 10 minutes. Okay, now take a large baking pan and spray with cooking spray. Pour the milk sauce over the drained pasta, add the heated mix veggies and ½ cup of the cheese. Stir together and pour into the greased baking pan. Cover with the rest of the cheese and either store in fridge for a while or bake in pre-heated oven at 180C for 45 minutes or until the cheese is golden brown. Serve hot or cold. Please enjoy.
