WATER WOES SOLUTION SOUGHT
Photo courtesy Rockhampton Regional Council As Mount Morgan’s No.7 Dam levels decreases, the level of concern by Mount Morgan residents is dramatically increasing. A new Facebook Page - Mount Morgan - Secure Our Water - has been receiving a lot of questions. In an effort to sort the circulating “wheat from the chaff” about various aspects of the dam and the ongoing water problem, page administrator, Kirra Swain has forwarded a letter to State and Federal Members and Rockhampton Regional Council. Ms Swain said there were so many different theories and knowledge sets in the public arena, that it was necessary to send a letter to gain a better understanding and to “debunk” some of the myths. These include dredging of the dam, condition of the dam wall, a pipeline from Stanwell, Fletcher Creek decommissioning and use
of the Open Cut water. “It’s important that we are all on the same page,” she said. Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc (MMPAD) has been advised by Council that a newsletter will be delivered to all hourseholds in the community outlining short and long term options that are outlined in Council’s Drought Management Plan which is triggered when the No. 7 Dam levels reach 10 percent. MMPAD has been lobbying all levels of government for many years.MMPAD has also been advised that consultation with the community will take place in the near future. Due to COVID restrictions and social distancing requirements it may mean that more than one meeting is held to ensure all residents have an opportunity to attend.
Water and Supporting a Better Environment Councillor, Donna Kirkland, said: “We know that this is a really important issue in Mount Morgan. “Councillors and senior officers met on Tuesday to discuss the latest water situation, and we will be considering a whole range of options for both short and long term water security. We will be writing directly to every household with an update this week, and we will post to our Facebook page and website too. “As ever, if residents have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to get in touch.” Divisional Councillor Cherie Rutherford, said she knew the last 12 months in particular have been challenging for Mount Morgan residents, and she has reassured the community that whatever happens with the rain we will not leave you without water.”

Pet program helps ensure happy and healthy dogs
Rockhampton Regional Council’s program designed to help protect your pooch finishes on 30 April and is run thanks to a partnership between Rockhampton Regional Council, Paws For A Purpose (PFAP), and two local vets. The “Vac and Chip Program” offers eligible residents of the Rockhampton Region $15 vaccinations and $10 microchipping for their dogs at participating vets.

sadly die,” Dr Kelman said.
“Microchipping is an additional cost to that, so it’s easy to see why people struggle with these kinds of fees at times.
“We’re all working together under our new Combating Parvovirus Program to make sure those who are doing it tough can still give their puppies and dogs the protection they need from this disease, along with others.
“That’s why we are so proud to roll out programs like Vac and Chip – they drastically reduce the costs for residents, and help to ensure that pets in our region can still be well cared for.
Chair of Council’s Local Laws Portfolio, Councillor Ellen Smith (pictured above), said she was thrilled to see the program offered again this year.
“I want to thank Pets For A Purpose for teaming up with Council again this year, and local vet clinics Alma Street Veterinary Hospital and Capricorn Veterinary Clinic for getting on board.”
“Part of being a responsible pet owner is helping your dog to stay healthy and safe – and vaccinations and microchipping are an incredibly important part of ensuring their wellbeing,” Cr Smith said.
With Parvo outbreaks usually occurring from October to February, PFAP Founder and veterinarian, Dr Mark Kelman, said this program is a great opportunity for residents to protect their young pups this year.
“These vaccinations normally cost up to or even over $100, and puppies need three of those in their first four months, plus a
“Many people would be surprised to hear that Parvo strikes 20,000 puppies and dogs every year in Australia – 90 per cent of which are puppies and half of which

“This is our third year now offering this program - literally saving hundreds of puppies from catching Parvo - and we couldn’t have done it without the support of the amazing veterinary practices, a generous Rockhampton Regional Council subsidy and of course the donations we receive as well as the sale of our very own Paws for A Purpose Premium Beef Treats.” To apply for the Vac and Chip vouchers, head into any of Council’s Customer Service Centres, or submit a Vaccination and Microchip Voucher Application Form available here: https:// www.rockhamptonregion.qld. gov.au/AboutCouncil/CustomerForms#Animals. Environment Councillor Donna Kirkland encouraged groups to apply for the Environment and Sustainability category for this funding program. “This category is designed to support projects that protect, maintain, and enhance our natural environment while strengthening our community’s capacity to live sustainably. “Since Council brought in this category in 2019 we have been able to support some wonderful initiatives, and help our community put their passion for the environment into action.
Applications are now open for round three of the 2020/21 Community Assistance Program (CAP), so if your organisation is planning an initiative, activity or program that will contribute to our community now is the time to apply!

Our international borders will open at some stage so we must continue to be cautious. Lastly, if you are involved in any disputes and/or situations, please seek us out for advice. GALLERY UPDATE How are entries going for our next exhibition, Diversity? This should be an interesting exploration into what makes humans unique from one another, how broad a scope of nature is represented by flora and fauna, and a cultural examination of differences, but also similarities. We look forward to the big reveal! The Exhibition Opening will be on Saturday, 13 March, with a slight change to the day, as we have pushed the time back to a cooler 4:30pm. Come along for a glass of wine, or other refreshment, enjoy some nibbles and support our local creatives. All are welcome. Artists are to submit works by Wednesday 10th March. Contact 0411 865 621 for submission forms and follow our Facebook page for updates. Following DIVERSITY, we are honoured to host the farewell exhibition of the well-known, and extremely talented Kaye Duggan from Yeppoon. She will be hanging up her brushes, as she is looking to retire from from Exhibition work. Her large flower oil paintings (above right) always make a bold statement and is what she is best known for, however she will also have a variety of other subjects on show in her oil paintings. Kaye and her husband John have been amazing supporters of the No7 Gallery since opening and are responsible for our sign writing on the building. This will only be a month-long exhibition, commencing 16 July and running until 20 August. A call out for locals to contribute to our next exhibition will be made, for the “Series and Progressions” Exhibition which will start in September and lead into 2022. This theme will see groups of progression art pieces en masse, be it over time, a tale of seasons, of growth or even decay. We are very excited for this one, and it should be extremely thought provoking for not only the Artists, but also the viewers. Our regular Monday evening conversational continues, call Page 10

QCWA Hello everyone, how quickly time passes and things change. As I said in the last write up for the Q.C.W.A. We look forward to welcoming more ladies to our branch and look forward to seeing you at our meetings and functions. On Monday, 8 March we will be holding a morning tea/ social morning for International Women’s Day at the Mount Morgan Dam. more than 70 countries that are a part of the A.C.W.W. and as a part of International Women’s Day we want ladies to come along and enjoy the morning. Bring a chair and your coffee mug and have an enjoyable time. Our branch has been a part of the local community since 1950 and we hope to be a part of it for many years to come. Generations of ladies have enjoyed being a part of the Q.C.W.A. and they learnt a lot. They enjoyed the friendships and the different skills they learnt such as handcrafts, cooking, floral art, and International work. We do D.V connect packs, birthing kits, kits for kids and for our local hospital we have donated nappies and toiletry packs. Our branch has donated to the schools and we would like to continue helping. So, ladies we are still open just in a new location. Thank you to the hub for having us as we set out on this new journey. For more information contact The Q.C.W.A. Mount Morgan Branch President Arlene Roberts on 0428 457 461. Submitted by A. Roberts

Student leaders inducted February was a busy month for Mount Morgan State High School leaders with two induction ceremories taking place. The Student Leadership Network Induction Ceremony took place at the Cathedral College on 11 February and then the Mount Morgan State High School on 19 February. Lord Lamington visits the Mount in 1896
‘Lord Lamington and party arrived here [Mount Morgan] at a quarter past 11 [on Friday, 5 June 1896]. There was a triumphal arch erected at the bridge ... The motto over the arch was “Welcome to Lord Lamington” ... The Mayor and the members of the Council, with the leading townsmen, followed the Vice-regal carriage, which was escorted by 40 officers and men of B. Company, Q.D.F. [Queensland Defence Forces], under Captain Marshall; the Friendly Societies, and the Mount Morgan Brass Band joined in the reception. They proceeded by East Street to the Town Hall, where a platform had been erected’ (‘The Governor at the Mount. Right Royal Reception’, The Daily Northern Argus (Rockhampton, Qld., 1875-1896), 5 June 1896). Mount Morgan was one of Lord Lamington’s first official visits as Governor of Queensland. He was reportedly very interested in touring the famous works of the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company. Lord Lamington occupied the role of Governor of Queensland until late 1901, the year of Federation. He is also renowned for having the famous lamington cake named after him. This

Movie Review RAMS This delightful film features two very famous local boys. Michael Caton (Uncle Harry, THE SULLIVANS; Ted Taylor, PACKED TO THE RAFTERS; plus a list of television series and a filmography longer than both arms) who is a Monto boy; and of course Wayne Blair from Rocky. His Dad, our good friend Bob, an ex-military man who was founder and the brilliant manager of Dreamtime Cultural Centre, used to tell stories of young Wayne and his mates cruising around Rocky, making short films based on his own storylines and then screening them for family and friends. Wayne has since gone on to write, direct and star in a host of shows and movies including THE SAPPHIRES, MYSTERY ROAD, REDFERN NOW, TOP END WEDDING - and in 2015 he directed Salma Hayek and Adrien Brody in a major American/International film set in Iran, SEPTEMBERS OF SHIRAZ. RAMS also stars our beloved Antipodean brother-from-anothermother, the always-marvellous Sam Neill, and veteran British theatre and film icon, the talented and accomplished Miranda Richardson. Their grandfather began developing the special bloodline that was to become the unbeatable
champion sheep breed in all of Western Australia, if not the entire country - perhaps even the best in the world! Decades later their Dad kept the faith, carefully developing the breed, promoting extraordinary wool production while at the same time boasting strong, heavy meat and muscle bulk and the sweet temperament that made their sheep the perfect flock animals and the envy of every breeder. A couple of generations ago, the duty and heavy responsibility of caring for and continuing to develop their bloodline fell to brothers Colin (Sam Neill) and Les (Michael Caton). The problem is , the boys are at war with each other. Okay it’s mostly (but not always) a cold war, but even though they live side by side and work together every day of their lives to honour their forebears and care for their precious legacy (the prized bloodline), they have separate flocks and haven’t spoken to each other for forty years. But then Les’ prize ram is diagnosed with a rare and lethal disease - an affliction never before seen in this country. The authorities move quickly and a purge of every sheep in the valley is ordered. Not one sheep, no matter how special, is to be spared. All must be slaughtered by law. Les and Colin
DEE RIVER OLDIES
The Dee River Oldies Group welcomes new and existing members to our meetings and morning teas. For 2021, we still have our Covid-19 restrictions in place. This is nothing new, as we always write down who attends our functions. Keeping our members safe is our top priority. Page 14
are devastated. All of those generations of love and planning and careful breeding...Their Dad...Their Grandad...How can they just let all of that go? What would you do? Les decides to go the road of angry defiance while Col - he chooses a more clever route, quietly and stealthily trying to outwit the powers that be. Can the warring brothers set aside their differences, call a truce, save their flock, reunite their family and bring their community back together? (Point of interest: RAMS is a complete rewrite of the original Icelandic movie of the same name which we also have in stock. They are different enough that you can, if you wish, watch both without diminishing either, but if you do, I would watch the Icelandic RAMS first.) RAMS is directed by Jeremy Sims and runs for almost two hilarious, emotional, thrilling and very human hours...Loved it!
