Formal farewell to school days Thirty students of Mount Morgan State High School have officially closed their school books, along with a major chapter in their lives. After twelve years of education, the local students officially said goodbye to their school days last week, heading to Mount Morgan High as students for the final time on Friday, November 16. The students then celebrated their end of schooling with style on the Friday evening, with the Senior Formal. Dressed in their finest, the senior students met at the Mount Morgan State High School for photographs in the afternoon before heading to the School of Arts for the evening celebrations. Prior to commencement, the students were met at the Hall entrance by family, friends and members of the community; eager to see their official arrival and their walk along the red carpet. Congratulations to the graduating class of 2012: Emily Armstrong, Tenielle Buckton, Linda Bunning, Carly Collins, Zachary Dangerfield, Codie Evans, Andrew Francis, Jessica Geiszler, Leonie George, Clive Hayes, Riley Holden, Tamika Hosmer, Daniel Jaeger, Megan Klower, Kasey Leisha, Casey Lennox, Shaun Myler-Tyler, Renae Paton, Jordan Pearce, Blayne Porter, Shyan Pratt, Ashley Pye, Brody Richardson-Kupke, Chad Robinson, Dana Rowley, Timothy Stein, Jonathon Stock, Christelle Ward, Harley Williams and Ashlee Wyvill. Having read this online, we thought this may be an item of interest and is one for much discussion. It is an obituary notice for our old friend, Common Sense. It reads: “His age is not known as his records were lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered for valuable lessons as: knowing when to come in out of the rain; or that life is not always fair; and maybe it was my fault. Common Sense lived by simple rules of sound policies (don’t spend more than you earn) and adults, not children are in charge. His health started to deteriorate when a 6 year old boy was charged with harassment for kissing a girl class mate and a teacher had to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or Elastoplast to a student. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn’t defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault. He finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realise that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust, his wife Discretion, his daughter Responsibility and his son, Reason. However he is survived by four step brothers: I know my rights, I want it Now, Someone else is to blame and I’m a Victim...” In today’s crazy and fast world, perhaps Common Sense has had a bit of a struggle in some respects and at times does seem to have vanished completely but then there are times when we are uplifted by good deeds of every day Aussies who volunteer for tireless and sometimes very dangerous work. At present our own Fire Brigade and S.E.S. Personnel are in the front of things with all the bush fires that are happening. Whatever our thoughts are, life must be balanced and each one responsible for their own part. It is sadly not roses all the time. On a brighter note it is nearly time for the Festival of Christmas Trees. This event is a Mount Morgan speciality and does deserve the best support we can give it. Each year never ceases to amaze one with such thought and originality of some of the trees. The Big Dam area is certainly taking on a new look and so attractive already. Work hard to Think Clean and Be Tidy as we want the Mount looking spic and span for the Christmas season.

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, 1918, the guns of World War I fell silent; marking the end of hostilities after four years of warfare. Today, thousands join together annually on November 11 to pay tribute to this moment and to honour all those who have served and are currently serving in conflicts. Mount Morgan’s 2012 Remembrance Day Service was held at ANZAC Park last Sunday (November 11). Locals gathered silently for the 11am ceremony, led by Mount Morgan RSL Sub Branch President, Mr Mike Johnston. Pictured: locals, Levi and TJ place poppies in honour of past and present servicemen and servicewomen at Mount Morgan’s Remembrance Day Service.

Looking at the two light field guns resting at Mount Morgan’s ANZAC Park, it is hard to believe that they were made over 100 years ago, and not to mention that they both have been through a World War. Appearing today as they no doubt did when first brought to the battle fields of World War I, the field guns have been restored as part of a Restoration Project launched by the Mount Morgan RSL Sub Branch earlier this year. Learning of the history of these guns, both provide a remarkable tale and a sobering insight into their past and the conflicts of World War I. History tells that the smaller of the two guns (pictured top right), was captured by Australian Light Horse Troops at Beersheba in Palestine in October 1917 after their victory against the Turks, while the second gun (pictured bottom right) is a light field Howitzer which was captured by Australian troops on the Western Front somewhere between August and October in 1918. They were presented to the citizens of Mount Morgan in 1921 and have resided in their current resting place for the past 90 years. On ANZAC Day 2012, the Mount Morgan RSL Sub Branch announced the restoration project and their hope to raise $8,000 - in aim of ensuring that both guns remain in good condition for another 90 years to come. The funds were raised through the support of members of the Mount Morgan community, a number of Mount Morgan and Rockhampton businesses, the Stanwell Corporation and the Rockhampton Regional Council. The project was completed by Anvil Engineering of Gracemere over three months, completed in time for the 2012 Mount Morgan Remembrance Day Service. President of Mount Morgan RSL Sub Branch, Mike Johnston said the restoration included a variety of works to both guns. “Both guns are over 140 years old and were in fairly good condition after spending the past 90 years in their present location, but we wanted to ensure their longevity.” “Both received a fresh coat of paint, along with various other works.” Mr Johnston said.
“The smaller gun was stripped down and rebuilt into its original position. It’s now set up as a fort gun, which is how it would have been used in Beersheba. The larger gun now rests on a stand, to stop wood rotting and the wheels have also been locked.” Mr Johnston extends sincere thanks to all those who contributed to the success of this project. “We are very thankful to all who assisted the Mount Morgan RSL Sub Branch with this project. “It is sad that our largest personal donator, Alex Teeney was not here to see the guns restored and back in place at Anzac Park”. The guns can be viewed at ANZAC Park in Mount Morgan, situated at the end of Morgan Street.

State of the art playground for Mount Morgan
Work is underway on a new district playground at Mount Morgan that will provide a state of the art facility for the Region’s children. Chair of Council’s Parks and Recreation Committee, Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the $450,000 worth of upgrades; which includes picnic facilities and playground, would be a great coup for Mount Morgan. “We’ve already removed the Golden Mount Nursery and cleared the site at the No 7 Dam and the place will be a hive of activity over the coming weeks as equipment goes in,” Cr Rutherford said. “Some new pathways have already been put in linking shelters and car parking and Jobs Queensland have assisted with new fencing. “Jobs Queensland Limited received $350,000 under the State and Federal funded Queensland Natural Disasters Jobs and Skills Package initiative to put towards this valuable community project. “Jobs Queensland have been a great help to Council staff in working on this project and Rockhampton Regional Council has provided $150,000 from the regional parks budget. Cr Rutherford said the new playground would offer more than just a standard children’s playground. “It will have two shelters with picnic tables and chairs and a double plate electric barbecue, as well as some great outdoor exercise equipment,” Cr Rutherford. “We’re also putting in a new car park that will cater to about 20 cars. “We’ve got 11 different items of playground equipment going in, ranging from standard swings to the spinning speed gyro, slippery dips and plenty of places to climb. “We expect the end product to be attractive to families from across the region especially in such a lovely setting”. Cr Rutherford said Council was hoping to have the whole facility ready for use in early December. “Weather permitting this great new facility will be ready for families to use over the coming summer holidays,” Cr Rutherford said. “I look forward to seeing the finished product and am sure it will be appreciated by many families in the Mt Morgan area.” Pictured is an illustration of one of the playground pieces. Leichhardt draws on new event to raise funds for Cancer Leichhar
For the Mount Morgan Blue Care Auxiliary, it certainly isn’t “once in a blue moon” that you see the team working hard in the community, but recently hosting a community dance was a first for the local organisation.
You’ve no doubt heard of a pub draw… but chances are you haven’t heard of a pub draw quite like this…
Blue Care’s Blue Moon Dance
Last month, the team hosted the first fundraiser of this kind, in aim of raising funds for Mount Morgan Blue Care Auxiliary. The evening proved a tremendous success, with a total $450 raised through the event, further supported by community contributions. “The Blue Moon Dance”, welcomed over 60 people to the Community Services Hall on Saturday, November 3rd, with local attendees joined by residents from Gin Gin, Maryborough and Rockhampton. Attendees were treated to a lavish supper, live entertainment; supplied by the Classics as well as dance demonstrations supplied by the Rocky Rockers and the Baree Dance Group. The evening was proven extra special, with a birthday cake presented for local resident Frank Molloy, who celebrated his 80th birthday the following Monday. The Mount Morgan Blue Care Auxiliary sincerely thanks all who donated to and attended the event, and helped to make it such an enjoyable and successful evening. Pictured: Marie (left) and Marlene (right) of Mount Morgan Blue Care Auxiliary present President and Secretary, Daphne Kennedy with the raised sum.

Last fortnight, the Leichhardt Hotel hosted its first “Big Pub Draw” – a creative new event established by the Hotel in aim of raising funds for charity. Held for one week, the event saw the walls of the Leichhardt games room, corridors and bar lined with blanks sheets of paper; welcoming visitors and patrons to use the range of drawing tools on offer and leave their own creative mark on the walls. Many took up the challenge throughout the week, seeing the walls of the Hotel decorated with a range of creative designs and drawings. The final day of the event (Sunday, November 11) then saw voted drawings put up for auction; with a totaled $450 raised on the day. The total sum will now be donated to the Cancer Council. Hotel publican, Shelly Marty thanks all who assisted in making the event a success. “It was a great day and so much fun.” “A very big thanks to all who left drawings, came along to the auction and helped make it such a success.” Shelly said the Big Pub Draw is an event the Hotel is now planning to hold annually. “We would like hold the Big Pub Draw every year so we hope to see all budding artists in Mount Morgan leave their mark during that week, this time next year.” The next Big Pub Draw will be held from the 4th of November until the 12th of November 2013. For further details, contact the Leichhardt Hotel on 4938 1851. Giving a new definition to the term “pub draw”: pictured is one of the drawings (sold for $100), auctioned as part of the Leichhardt Hotel’s Fundraiser – the Big Pub Draw.

Raising funds is no Challenge with local bowling event
Mount Morgan Museum: restoring personal pieces of history Mou Mount Morgan Museum: restoring personal pieces of history Mou Mount Morgan Museum: restoring personal pieces of history Mou Mount Morgan Museum: restoring personal pieces of history Mou
Proprietors of the Golden Nugget Hotel, Wayne and Sandra Sigvart organised a lawn bowls pub challenge to help raise funds for the year seven students of Mount Morgan Central State School. The event took place at the Dee Bowls Club on the 24th October with local businesses and organisations coming together to support the local primary school.
Whether they’re presenting people, places, objects or scenery- there’s nothing quite like an old photograph to provide a journey back in time. In many cases though, time doesn’t always keep these pieces of history well preserved; with many faded, creased or damaged over the years.
Some participants travelled from Rockhampton to take part in the big day. These included teams from the Saleyards Pub and Victoria Park Bowls Club. Contestants from Mount Morgan comprised of teams from the Leichhardt Hotel, the Railway Hotel and the Welfare Bowls Club. The bowls challenge was won by the Saleyards Hotel with the Golden Nugget team taking out second place. Following the bowls challenge staff and students from Mount Morgan Central helped make burgers for the contestants before the afternoon concluded with a seafood raffle and a multi-draw raffle. There were many helpers at the club on the day undertaking jobs such as selling tickets and organising the raffles. Barry Lawrence was master of ceremonies, making speeches and various presentations. The Saleyards Hotel also graciously donated a voucher from their restaurant the Crooked Cactus to the students. The school will use the voucher in a raffle to raise further funds. The day was a fantastic success with in excess of $500 raised to help the year seven students pay for their annual camp to the recreation centre in Cooee Bay. Mount Morgan Museum: restoring personal pieces of history
But what if you could have a copy of those images in better condition, without all of that damage? This is just the question being presented by the staff of the Mount Morgan Historical Museum, offering an exciting photo restoration service to assist many with their personal pieces of history. “With hundreds of photographs brought into our possession, we know all too well that photos can become damaged over time.” Museum volunteer and image restorer, Aleisa Allan said. “It is exciting though that there are ways to take away some of this, and see the images without those stains or creases.” Aleisa has recently completed a photographic program study through the Museum, with restoration works the prime focus of the course. Since completion, Aleisa has been assisting local community members in restoring some of the damage to their old photographs. “It is great seeing the end result.” Aleisa said. “At times it can depend on the extent of damage to the image, but most times the photographs can be improved and we can take away things like creases, spots and stains.” Along with the restoration works, the program can also see a variety of cropping if required, as well as the inclusion of wording to photograph copies for those who would like to see names and dates with their image. Other items such as newspaper clippings and fabric prints are also potential candidates for restoration. Below Aleisa holds a fabric print, along with the restored copy below. “It’s a great way to enjoy your photographs or favourite images again.”Aleisa concluded.

From your State MP Congratulations to 2012 Students:
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all Mount Morgan SHS students on their outstanding achievements once again, as I was unable to attend the annual awards presentation due to Parliamentary commitments. I would also like to extend my best wishes to all Year 12 students as they now move on to tertiary education, a traineeship, apprenticeship or the general workforce. This is a very nostalgic time for you and hopefully one that you will look back on with great fondness. It is also an exciting time with your entire future ahead of you and I wish you success and happiness along whichever path you have chosen to travel.
Transport changes:
Rail Trips: From 1 November 2012 the Travel Train concessions which are available to pensioners and Veterans Affairs’ will now have an increased booking fee from $12.50 to $25.00. Also the number of seats per service are limited, so it is advisable to book early for your preferred dates of travel. Taxi Subsidy: The taxi subsidy scheme had been capped to $400 per person a year (equating to approximately 16 trips per year) for people with a disability who require transportation. However, this is now under review, as is the whole Taxi Subsidy Scheme. The cap will not occur before 1 July 2013 and then only if the review recommends it. Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme (PTSS): This subsidy for people living in rural and remote areal will be increased from 1 January 2013. The mileage subsidy will increase from 15 cents to 30 cents per km and the accommodation subsidy will increase from $30 to $60 per night per person when staying in commercial accommodation. The PTSS provides assistance to approved patients and carers for travel and accommodation costs to the nearest specialist medical service that is more than 50 kms from the patient’s nearest hospital.
Grants:
Last chance to get your applications in for the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, with the final round for 2012 closing on 30th November. • Allocations are made to successful organisations around 12 weeks after the funding round closing date. • All applications are now online with all aspects of the grant managed electronically. Referees are now listed instead of formal letters of support so please contact my office so that I may fully support your application. • Each application is valid for six months. If your application is not successful in the first funding round, it is automatically considered in the next funding round.
News from MMPAD
Mount Morgan Northern Supply Scheme Commissioned Mount M
Hi there Argus readers, Well firstly, we hope you have been enjoying your fortnightly Argus issues. We have been receiving a range of additional stories, advertisements and article ideas of late, and we would sincerely like to thank all who have made contributions. We always enjoy receiving community inclusions, and the variety of stories and information pieces this year has been great! As always, if you have an inclusion, please contact our office. And speaking of the Argus… we are excited to announce that our new printer has arrived! We were recently able to purchase a new printer thanks to the generous support of the Stanwell Corporation and a number of local organisations in Mount Morgan. This printer will assist us in continuing to bring you the Argus throughout the township, as well as carry out various printing works for the community and community projects. We are also excited to announce a project that has recently commenced: Mount Morgan in History, for Junior Readers. Overall, this project will see the production of a children’s history book in the near future, detailing Mount Morgan’s impressive past. Stage 1 of this project is underway, with the content for this book currently being compiled by myself, in collaboration with others. We are further pleased to announce that thanks to funding from Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF), the content for this book will see professional editing and formatting. This will see completion in March, and followed by the development of illustrations at a later date. We look forward to keeping you updated on its progress. Some of the other projects we currently have in the immediate pipeline include: • New promotional materials- we have submitted a funding application to see the printing of a new town brochure and publication banners, and if granted successful, will see these developed early next year. • The restocking of fingerlings in the No. 7 Dam– as part of the Restocking Management Plan for the Dam, we are anticipating to release 8,500 Golden Perch Fingerlings in 2013. We are currently seeking funding for this and hope to see the fingerlings released Feb/ March. Some of the other projects we are looking into include advertising campaigns during the Christmas holidays, the development of a new mud map as well as the progression of signs and a large scale map (with a twist!) – but we will update you more on this following more progress. As always, please feel free to contact our office if you would like further details on any of these, or any other projects we are developing. Please also feel free to contact us if you would like to discuss any project ideas that you may have. New members to Mount Morgan Promotion and Development are always welcome also. Last but not least, we would also like to extend a warm welcome to anyone seeking assistance in publicising upcoming community events or projects; locally and/or regionally. We are always eager to assist in positively promoting our local area. Until next time, Camille Steinberger- Project Officer, MMPAD
