Heated Pool update:
A letter has been received from Michael Rowe of RRC stating that a report on the options for reinvigorating the pool be submitted to Council. It is anticipated that a report will be presented to Council prior to the finalisation of the 2015/16 budget determinations. Following receipt of the letter an email was sent to Coucillor Cherie Rutherford, Mount Morgan’s Council representative requesting her full support for budget inclusion. We now wait and hope for a positive result. --------------------------------------------------------------------This story was given to me by Mr Gerry Brewster and it was the version of a Mr Vic Jones who was an eyewitness to the event. The crash of a World War II U.S.A Glider in Mount Morgan: About mid-day on Saturday 24th September, 1943, the residents of Mount Morgan were startled to see a U.S.A. super fortress (possibly a P39) with a glider attached by a nylon rope, flying around the mine area and then over the town.

People were more startled when the glider was released from the plane from about the top of the hospital area, flying off over Shandon and Egan Hills north towards Baree. After turning, it came in parallel with the railway line, not far from where Gunthorpe’s old brickworks were situated long ago, in the location now known as Glen Gordon. Mr Jones told Mr Golding that he and Mr Jack Ferguson, the then engineer at the mine, were the first to reach the glider, which was lying in the middle of a big waterhole about 8ft deep. Eight U.S.A. servicemen, fully armed and ready for action, were on board the glider which was carrying ammunition. None of the soldiers were seriously hurt as a result of the forced landing, but, naturally, they were shaken up. The soldiers told Mr Jones and Mr Ferguson that they had been heading for the New Guinea battle zone to fight the Japanese. Another eye witness who arrived promptly on the scene was Constable Bill Cross (who later retired in Mount Morgan after serving here on his return as Senior Sergeant). He said that when he arrived on his motor cycle and sidecar, souveniring had started. Many souvenirs had been collected by the large crowd who had gathered. He quickly stopped this. The reason for the release of the glider was not clear. It is possible that the plane and the glider were off course and that the latter had got out of control, as a heavy wind was blowing on that day, and it was also very foggy. Perhaps the plane was incapable of towing the glider to its destination. The United States Army authorities recovered valuable equipment from the wrecked glider, which was taken to Rockhampton, where the troops were stationed. After removing all the instruments and other important items, gasoline was poured over the glider and a torch was applied and so it was destroyed by fire. It certainly gave the Mount residents an exciting experience but thankfully no one was hurt. As always. Think Clean- Be Tidy.

Wins on and off the field for the Lorikeets
The Mount Morgan Lorikeets have pulled on their boots for another season, and it’s shaping up to be one of their best yet. The local club kicked off the 2015 rugby union season last month, and have already secured some very impressive wins – both on and off the playing field. The local lads have celebrated colossal victories for their past three games, while the club’s committee have secured grant funding to see mammoth upgrades to the local footy grounds and clubhouse. The club has recently been announced as a successful applicant in the latest round of the Gambling and Community Benefit Fund. The winning application sees a sum of $35,000 donated to the club by the Queensland Government and Gambling Benefit Committee. It will soon be used to make major improvements to the Lorikeet’s home grounds at Newman Oval. Mount Morgan Rugby Union Committee Inc President, John Steinberger said the announcement is the beginning of some very good things to come.
“Upgrading the facilities and the grounds has been something that a lot of people have wanted to see for some time. The funding application was submitted in 2014 by the previous Executive. And many thanks to the CQ Rugby Union Development Officer for their assistance with this also.” “Not only is Mount Morgan brilliant with local talent and players but now we will also have an upgraded facility to match,” John said. Minor upgrade works will be commencing in the upcoming weeks, with major works set to be carried after the 2015 rugby season. In the meantime, the Lorikeets say they will be looking to keep up their current winning streak. “It’s been a very good start to the season for the club,” Lorikeets Coach, Clinton Connolly said. “The boys have played four games so far. The first game was a 7 all draw against Gladstone, the second game was a 59-10 win against Colts. We then beat CQUniversity 69-14 and last fortnight we beat Frenchville 28-12.”
“This funding is going to see upgrading to the local grounds,” John said.
When asked on the team’s conquering start, Clinton said it’s a combination of familiarisations and personal improvements.
“The club will be looking at building and grounds improvements, and we will also be looking into installing grandstands and upgrading the goal posts.”
“The team has been together for quite a few years now and in that time a number of the same people have been playing in the same positions.
John said the news has been well received by all.
“They are just getting better and better every year.”

Remembering Ward’s Bake House By Sean Fox We all know the smell of Mount Morgan’s current Hot Bread Shop and its great selection of baked goods but do you remember the time when bake houses ruled a country town? Then you may recall waking up to the tantalising smell of fresh bread baking from Ward’s Bake House. In particular, residents who lived along the Dee River, near Happy Valley, would remember its owner, Herb Ward and the great service he provided. Ward’s Bake House was situated on Neil Street and served the Mount Morgan community for generations. Mr. Ward himself made house-to-house deliveries to Red Hill residents. You could imagine how overjoyed they would have been when they spotted Herb approaching with his big basket of fresh bread that was baked in his Brigalow oven. Ward’s baked bread in many different types of loaves including: tin loaves, cottage loaves, tank loaves and café loaves. Ward’s was one of a few bake houses in Mount Morgan. Boyes’ Bake House was situated at Red Hill, Thomas’ Bake House sat opposite the old Queensland National Bank in Morgan Street and another bake house could be found in Campion Street. The latter mainly sold cakes and the occasional loaf of bread. Local resident, Col Turner, fondly remembers his time at Ward’s as a delivery boy. “I used to work for Myrtle Way before Herb bought it off her,” Col explained. Col left school and became a junior carter at Ward’s where he made house deliveries. The next chapter in Col’s life was enlisting in the Army. It was during his time in the Army that Col suffered a skin allergy from the khaki clothing he wore. “I served 18 months in the Army and spent six months in Enoggera Army Hospital,” Col said. “It took seven years to get it out of my system,” Col added. Mr. Turner finally returned to Mount Morgan and resumed working at Ward’s. At that time, Ward’s only delivered to stores and no longer made house-tohouse deliveries. Mr. Turner proudly told me that he met the love of his life, Nell, at Ward’s when she was a housemaid. Another Mount Morgan local, Lyn Baldwin, worked at Ward’s following Col’s departure. She worked there from May 1963 to August 1968. Lyn recollects working at Ward’s when dollars and cents were established. She would start her shift between 5:30am and 6:00am.
Another cherished memory Lyn has of her time at Ward’s is being given banana sandwiches and cordial every Friday. There was no town water so Ward’s had a trough that went to the river and water from the Dee was used. Timber was delivered to the spare allotment next to the bake house. Merv Ingram would deliver flour to the bake house and Colin Lee would help Merv unload the flour. Lyn recalls that bread deliveries were made by horse and cart. Herb and Beryl Ward delivered bread to Moonmera residents on their way to Rockhampton on Saturdays which was their shopping day. The clientele at the bake house extended from the township to areas such as Walmul and Struck Oil. Lyn recalls that customers who lived on properties outside of town would come to Ward’s every few weeks or so to purchase the amount of bread they needed. “Ward’s had a lot of customers come from Struck Oil to purchase bread,” Lyn said. Bread orders for those living outside of town were delivered by train. Frank and Sue Bond from Walmul got their bread delivered by train twice a week. “Jimmy Ward took the bread to the train station,” Lyn said. Lyn remembers that a man known as ‘Crusty’ picked up school kids from the bake house and dropped them home every day after getting his bread. The bake house was active in supporting the Mount Morgan community. Every fortnight, Ward’s cooked around half a dozen chickens for the ambulance’s chook raffle. On school sports days, bread as well as bread rolls were baked and taken in tea cases. Ward’s Bake House was such a popular business in its time. It provided a wonderful service to the town of Mount Morgan and is remembered with fondness.

Huge cent sale hoped to see huge response
It may have been five years ago, but Brian and Carol Stock still recall the year 2010 as though it was yesterday. It was the year Brian was diagnosed with myeloma (also known as multiple myeloma); a cancer of plasma cells. The diagnosis came after Brian underwent a back x-ray in Rockhampton. What followed for the local couple was a seven month stay in Townsville where Brian underwent intensive treatment. While the pair recall the time as “grueling”, they also say the blow was softened thanks to the kind support from the Townsville Leukemia Unit. Now in remission, Brian together with Carol have been spending much time giving back to the group who supported them through one of their toughest times. The local couple is looking to do just again this year, with two massive local fundraisers. The first is to be held this weekend. “We’re holding a huge cent sale and of course we are giving the money to Leukemia support units,” Carol said on the upcoming event. “It’s something we are very passionate about. While fundraising for cancer research is important also, we find the support that’s given to patients and their carers is just as worthy.” “It certainly isn’t an easy thing for anyone to go through, and the support that’s offered can help so much.” The fundraising cent sale will be held on Saturday afternoon at the Community Services Hall. It’s an event sure to not disappoint, with literally hundreds of prizes up for grabs. “We have 300 prizes to give away, as well as 50 special draws, and a mutli draw which has 35 prizes of its own. We’re also going to have a bag raffle and a spot raffle on the day.” The prizes accumulate to more than $1,000, with many purchased thanks to a generous donation from the Mount Morgan Railway Hotel Community Club. “There are so many good prizes to give away and they range from grocery items to ornamental pieces and even handmade keepsakes,” Carol said.
This weekend’s event is the third round of fundraising for Brian and Carol. In 2011 the pair saw more $3,000 raised, with the following effort in 2011 doubling that with over $6,000. This year they have their sights set on $10,000. It’s an aim and achievement which Carol describes as a community effort. “The money we were able to raise in 2011 and 2013 was only thanks to the great support from the Region and in particular the Mount Morgan community.” It’s also something which the Townsville Support Units have recognised. “We made a visit to Townsville earlier this year and stopped in and saw the staff at the Leukemia units,” Carol said. “We saw that they now have a plaque thanking us and the Mount Morgan community for the previous donation. I think Mount Morgan should be very proud of that.” Brian and Carol hope to raise the $10,000 over two cent sales, with the second set to be held on September 26. If you would like further details on either event or would like to become involved in future local fundraising activities for the Leukemia Foundation, please contact Carol on: 49 381 459.

Queensland Ambulance Service Mount Morgan Station News
Calling for an ambulance At some stage in your life, you may find that you may have to phone for an ambulance. Unfortunately some people are hesitant to call for an Ambulance due to having to dial Triple Zero (000). This is the only phone number that you need to call in an emergency if you need an ambulance. Although if you are using a mobile phone, the emergency number to phone could be Triple 000 or 112 depending on your provider. Dialling Triple Zero (000) is a free call from any phone. On dialling Triple Zero (000) you will be answered by a Telstra Operator who asks: Do you want Police, Fire or Ambulance? Stay calm, don’t shout, and speak slowly and clearly. Tell the operator you need an ambulance. You will then be put through to an Ambulance Call Taker who will ask several questions: What is the town or suburb of the emergency? What is the exact address of the emergency? What is the phone number you are calling from? (This is asked in case the call is accidentally disconnected and they can call you back). What is your closest cross-street? Is that a house or a unit? Ok, tell me exactly what happened? Are you with the patient now? How many people are hurt? How old are they? Is he/she awake? Is he/she breathing? Depending on the incident, more questions may be asked as to the exact injuries. In some cases, instructions on how to assist the patient/s will be given. Please be patient and answer the questions as best you can. All of the information that you give assists in dispatching the paramedics to you as quickly as they can.
This app is easy to use and automatically brings up the address where you are calling from and the GPS coordinates latitude and longitude coordinates which you can tell the operator if you are unsure where you are when calling – for example on the side of a road. On closing, with National Volunteers Week being last week from 11th – 17th May, we would like to thank our Local Ambulance Committee Members for volunteering their time in providing support and assistance to our local station. Your time and dedication is sincerely appreciated by all staff. Thank You.
News from the Dee River Oldies The Dee River Oldies at the Golden Mount Festival: You may have spotted our stall at this year’s Golden Mount Festival. It was a successful day for our group, and a big thanks to the Festival Committee for the opportunity to sell tickets and inform visitors all about the Dee River Oldies. As part of the stall, we had a raffle of a Chinese Gardener. This has been won by lucky local, Kathy Pearce. Congratulations Kathy, and a very special thank you to Rhonda Ramm for showcasing him in her window display during the lead up. Also our thanks go to Bette Broom for lending us a great collection of flags for our float. Bette has a wonderful collection and is always willing to share them around when needed. Our latest trip:
The person that you are talking to has someone else organising the ambulance to come to you so there is no delay in the ambulance getting to you. Remember, stay focused, stay relevant, and stay on the line. Mount Morgan Ambulance Station provides 24 hour Ambulance coverage. Officers work from home after hours and respond from their residence. If you are calling from home, it is also very useful if you are able to contain any pets that live at the household so that the paramedics can get to you quickly and safely and also to have a clear driveway for clear ambulance vehicle access when they arrive. In this day and age of technology, if you have a mobile phone which is a Smart Phone and you can download Apps, one that is very useful and promoted by the Emergency Services is EMERGENCY+ This is a free App to download and gives the following information: • Triple 000 for Ambulance, Police and Fire Services. • Also phone contact for the State Emergency Service and PoliceLink 131 444.
On Wednesday May 13, 41 of our members departed Mount Morgan at 9am and travelled to Wowan Bowls Club where we were treated to a beautiful morning tea. From there, travelled via Rannes to Goovigen, toured around the town, then back to the hotel for a roast meal and sweets. The return trip was via Jambin which looks to be recovered from the recent flood. We arrived back in the Mount at 2.45pm. A very great day had by all. The winners of the bus trip raffle, which were $25 fuel vouchers, from Mount Morgan Mechanical, were Kathleen Francois and Noel Kearney.

News from Mount Morgan Rodeo Association The Mount Morgan Rodeo Association Inc Committee would like to again thank all our sponsors and the community of Mount Morgan for their overwhelming support in making this year’s Rodeo, our first as a separate organisation from the Golden Mount Festival, an outstanding success. Special thanks go to Ed and Lyn Campion for donating our major prize of a hat stand and handmade whip, which was won by Rayleen Hayes. Our sincere gratitude also goes to Lyn for her tireless work as Secretary of the association. We had a great response to our Bulls**t Bingo game, ticket no 130 being the lucky winner held by C Eiler who received $300 in cash and $50 in petrol vouchers. Pictured: Rayleen Hayes being presented the major prize by Kev Daniels on behalf of Mount Morgan Rodeo Assoc Inc Committee.
Our Mother’s Day Raffle was drawn, first prize to Raye from the Railway Hotel, 2nd prize to Greta, and 3rd to Paul at the Grand Hotel. Again thank you all for the great support.
Our next event will be a barefoot bowls day at the Welfare Bowling Club with details to be advised in the next Argus. In the mean time, we'd like all you young people to get your thinking caps on. We need a logo, something which evokes the Rodeo and Mount Morgan. We will have prizes for the best entry and the contest will be open to both our local primary and high school students with a trophy and prize going to the winner, and also the privilege of having the winner's design gracing our flag at the beginning of each Mount Morgan Rodeo and on all our banners too. Good luck, details will be circulated through your schools and the Argus.

by Trish & Greg Mathers 0400591504 A couple of weeks ago we received a phone call to say that a cockatoo was caught in a tree out over the river. He had been there for quite some time squawking and was obviously distressed. I went to have a look to see what the problem was. The poor thing was tangled in fishing line, and on a closer look, had a lure hooked into his leg and foot. I assured the people who had spotted him we would do our best to rescue him, however the tree was overhanging the river, and he was probably about 30ft (or 10mtrs) above the water. Greg came to the rescue with an extension ladder; problem being the bank was very steep there (almost opposite Possum place but more towards the dam), and there was very little to put the ladder on. He managed as best as possible by balancing it on the tree roots, but each time he climbed it, the ladder would slip from side to side. Finally he managed to get enough grip to get close to the cocky, penknife in hand to slash the fishing line. Cocky however freaked out and as soon as he had a little leeway flew to a higher branch, still connected to the fishing line. This meant Greg had to climb the branches (out over the river) to try and free him. He just got close again and Cocky flew back down to the lower branch. After going silly around in a circle the cocky pranged into the tree and Greg managed to grab him (still high up on the ladder and hanging on). Greg fumbling around managed to cut the fishing line, however cocky made a desperate attempt and escaped. Unfortunately the lure was still firmly embedded in his leg. Greg had done his best and at least the cocky could fly. We hoped he would be able to free himself of the lure. More than two weeks on......another phone call to say a cocky was caught in fruit netting and he couldn't free himself because he was holding something in his foot. On arrival poor Cocky was really distressed. (Yes it was the same cocky!). He was a couple of metres high, with his leg and foot badly entangled in the bird netting, made worse by him flying around in circles trying to free himself, and the lure hooked well and truly in the netting. Our black satin net was placed over him to calm him, and with the help of the homeowner, a towel was held over his face from beneath. Try as I might however, I just couldn't free him, even with cutters. I eventually had no choice but to yank the lure out of his foot. He is now recovering in an aviary. He has lost a small part of his toe which was cut through by the bird netting. He has also a small wound from the lure. We are sure he will make a great recovery, after so much stress and trauma. He has to be one lucky cockatoo!

Hi Argus readers, Well it’s been another busy fortnight for us here at MMPAD. Firstly, we were sad to farewell our former Project Officer, Camille Steinberger. We wish Camille all of the very best in the future. If her time and professionalism with MMPAD is any indicator of how she will be in her future job, her new employer is very lucky.
Introducing our new billboard!
If you’ve been for a drive along the Bruce Highway recently you may have noticed our latest promotion project for Mount Morgan, a new billboard near Midgee! We’re promoting this fantastic community of ours and encouraging everyone to discover this great town for themselves.
A special thanks to Camille also for this issue of the Argus.
Some changes but business as usual: MMPAD will be continuing to carry out all of our usual projects and will also continue to oversee the Mount Morgan Rail Complex and the production of the Mount Morgan Argus. The management of the Rail Complex and MMPAD’s projects will now be overseen by our Project Officers Paul Johnstone, as well as our newest employee– Angie Wanstall. A very warm welcome Angie! The Mount Morgan Argus will intermediately be contracted to local resident, Eve-lyn Rogers on behalf of MMPAD. This will be for a period of three months with further details to follow. A very special thanks Eve-lyn! All enquires related to MMPAD, the Rail Complex and the Mount Morgan Argus can still be passed on to our usual contact details.
MMPAD Business Networking Night!
This month we will be rolling out something new and different for MMPAD – business networking nights! These networking evenings welcome local businesses, organisations and MMPAD members and will be held on a regular basis. These evenings are designed to be a relaxed mingling opportunity and a great way to discuss new ideas and see and showcase our local venues. Each networking night will be hosted by a local business. The first will kick off this month, on Wednesday the 27th of May and will be hosted by Pete and Narelle from the Leichhardt.
What’s new at the Info Centre & Rail Complex: Souvenirs! Don’t forget we have stocked up on all of our Mount Morgan souveniers! These are available from the Tourist Information room of the Rail Complex. We’ve got assorted drinkware including shot glasses, beer mugs, coffee mugs, water bottles, stubby coolers and wine glasses. We also have funky magnets and keyrings, caps, postcards, tea towels, collectable spoons… and a whoooooooole lot more. They are a great quality and all come complete with Mount Morgan branding. We still proudly showcase a range of locally made items, which are also for sale. Many of these are made by hand and range from crafts to Indigenous paintings. Be sure to stop in and check them out. Some of our latest visitors: The last fortnight has seen an increase in visitors to the Info Centre, particularly over Beef Week. The 7th of May welcomed members of the Historic Motorcycle Club of Queensland who were making their way through CQ.

• 2 brown onions diced
Pork and Potato Casserole
• 600ml cream • Pinch salt & pepper to taste • Plus an extra potato per people • 2 tblsp of corn flour mixed in a little water to make a runny paste to thicken the gravy
The cold weather is coming. We can feel the start of winter starting to chill our bones and it’s at this time of the year that we start to think of hearty stews and casseroles - the sort of things that mean grandma and mum would make us when we were little. This one is one of my favourites- it is a bit of a reflection on my Anglo/Irish heritage and of course it’s got potatoes, mushrooms and pork and they all cry out for a little bit of cream. So I hope you enjoy this lovely winter casserole as much as I have writing the recipe. It really does work and it comes out a treat. It will warm you right the way through for hours. Great in the slowcooker – you could have it bubbling away for hours or in the oven in a casserole pot. And I’d like to dedicate this to a lovely lady named Camille. Thank you for everything you’ve done for us Camille and good luck in the future in all your endeavors, from Mick and Karin and family.
Method:
So now it’s simple. Dice the pork into large cubes. Next, dice the onion and 2 potatoes. Put them in the bottom of the casserole dish. Add the punnet of mushrooms just roughly chopped in and put the diced pork on top. Season with a little salt and pepper and add the two tins of creamy mushroom soup. Now I’m not brand dropping but I do use Campbell’s- it’s one that I like, you might have a favorite, it’s up to you. Mix a small amount of chicken stock and wash out can but only a small amount about a quarter of a cup in each. Add 200ml of cream on top so you need a big casserole pot. Simply mix it all together. This recipe will also work in a pressure cooker- mind though it’s only going to take about 35 to 40 minutes and you’re going to be sitting down to the most beautiful dish. Mix it through with a wooden spoon put the lid of the casserole dish on. Cook at 180 degrees in the oven and just do its own thing for about an hour and a half to 2 hours. After, (be very careful because it’s very hot) take it out and take the lid off to stir ingredients. At that point you can taste for salt and pepper if you do need to add any more. Put it back in the oven for at least another hour after which time you can take it out to taste it again. Add the extra potatoes – one for each person. I just set them on top of the liquid and at this stage I put that back into the oven with the lid on for about 35 minutes or until the potatoes are cooked through. Then take the container out and thicken with a little bit of corn flour paste. Add in the remaining cream. I hold back about 100 mls just to garnish the plates at the end. Do a final stir through, have a final taste and put it back in the oven for about another 10 to15 minutes for the lid off - just so that the corn flour paste can cook through and thicken the casserole.
