WOW! How true is the old song title “What a difference a day makes”? It certainly did at our local swimming pool. Visiting one day and all looked as before, but 48 hours later, Wow! the place has a new look. Some fairies or godfather (or maybe LANE 4) have got out the paint brush and everywhere was just shining with new paint work. All seating, the canteen, iron waste baskets had all received a coat and even a garden bed was under construction. It was magic to see and with a charge of $2 for a swim the pool should be one of our most popular spots. Christmas parties or break- ups would be fun held there. With the shade at the Big Dam and the pool looking great the Mount has facilities for young and old to enjoy. Just need our heated pool fixed (if lottery comes good) and a permanent drought proof town water supply. We will be the envy of the district as the most historic, liveable, picturesque and friendly town in Central Queensland. Now back to the year 1970 for a Snippet of History. This year saw the old town successfully celebrate its third “Back to Mount Morgan Week (previously others were 1950 and 1960). The week was from the 3rd to the 11th October. In spite of the town being in the grip of a very severe drought with very severe restrictions on the use of water by the Shire Council everything went off in a very happy manner. Once again it was the renewing of old friendships that was the principle theme. The celebrations were planned and carried out by a committee under the control of the Mount Morgan Advancement Committee with Mr Dan Halliday as Chairman. With our new Festival Committee now already working for 2015 weekend of May 2nd and 3rd, all input and assistance would be much appreciated by them. As in previous years, the reunion of old friends will be a highlight of the event. Two other interesting items in 1970 was the visit of the Governor of Queensland, Sir Alan Mansfield on March 9th to visit the local Historical Museum (then in East Street). Then on Monday evening 14th September 1970 Mr Ross Duncan, the Queensland Sheffield Shield cricketer and Australian Test fast bowler attended a dinner at the local Rotary club. Of course his address was “Big Cricket” and no doubt was well received. Finally a quote from J.K. Rowling (Harry Potter author): “Anything’s possible if you’ve got enough nerve.”

Local achievements Big steps for Disaster Management

Comprising of members from various local emergency services, it’s no surprise the Mount Morgan Disaster Management Team knows how to move quickly. Despite only forming last year, the local group has wasted no time in already achieving some major goals. One of their major runs on the board - an emergency community noticeboard which was officially commissioned last week. The board has been erected at the Mount Morgan Auxiliary Fire Station and will display important information for the local community during times of disaster and emergency. At other times, the sign will promote important community education messages including smoke alarm reminders, bushfire safety information and local emergency services events. The board was officially commissioned last Wednesday afternoon, carried out by Officer in Charge at the Mount Morgan Police Station, Sergeant Mark Dean and Assistant Minister for Emergency Volunteers, Mr Ted Malone. “As a result of the floods in 2013 and a total loss of communication and isolation of Mount Morgan, a number of essential services in Mount Morgan got together and formed a disaster management team,” Sergeant Dean said during the official launch last week. The Disaster Management team is made up of representatives from the Queensland Fire and Emergency Rescue Service, the Queensland Police Service, the Mount Morgan State Emergency Service, the Mount Morgan Hospital and the John Cani Aged Care. Sergeant Dean said there were two major goals decided by the team. “We got together and decided that it would be good to get a couple of things together – one of those was an emergency radio channel, where all of the emergency services and the Hospital and the John Cani Centre could communicate freely between us. That was fairly easy set up,” Mark said. “The other big thing that was decided on was that we needed to have an emergency noticeboard so that people either travelling through town or in town would know where they could go for help or we could give them some sort of direction as to what was happening and how they could go about things.”

Mark said it was a team effort in seeing the idea come to fruition, with major support by some key players. “I would like to mention Darren Barnicoat in particular. Darren has been instrumental in putting this whole project together. He’s pretty much been the driving force behind it all,” Mark said. He said special thanks also go to Mr Ted Malone and the project’s sponsors. “We had planned on fundraising but I think by the time we got enough together for the emergency noticeboard everyone in town would be sick to death of sausages and the sight of those things. The project’s cost totalled more than $10,000. “It was suggested we talk to some key stakeholders or significant people and see if we could organise a bit of sponsorship,” Mark said. “I phoned the Council and they advised of a grant that would suit. My second phone call was to Mr Ted Malone. I’d met Mr Malone at the high school awards night last year. We had a conversation and he said ‘If there’s anything I can do Mark, give me a yell.’ He got that yell and I might say the reception was exceptionally good.” Mark said it wasn’t long before the team had all of the funding required; thanks to sponsorship from the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES ) and Powerlink.

Outpour of support for drought appeal Looking at the lives of others, there’s no denying that at times the grass looks greener. Of course there are also occasions when it doesn’t. Literally. For months, thousands of farming families throughout the State have been suffering the effects of severe drought. Although dearth and taking up a battling against Mother Nature are not new concepts for the Aussie farmer, its effects are never any less bleak. The recent challenges being faced in Queensland have been something that has sparked nationwide appeals. The call for help has been headed by hundreds of communities; with Mount Morgan among the list of those who have been eager to support. Three months ago, the Mount Morgan Saint Mary’s Anglican Parish decided to launch an appeal in the community in aim of making a local contribution to those in need in Central West Queensland. “What sparked our appeal was when we had heard about the efforts in Bundaberg,” Saint Mary’s Parish Council Secretary Keith Hare said. “It was the comments we heard about from a young girl who was a member of a farming family receiving support. She said that she would be now able to buy a toothbrush. That pricked our conscience.” Keith said the collection included a number of efforts; all made easy thanks to strong community support. “We put out collection tins around the local businesses, wrote letters to a few various organisations and overall just encouraged people to become involved where they could,” Keith said. “The collection wasn’t a difficult task by any means, because everyone was just so willing to help.”

“It was a great community effort. We are extremely pleased with the response from the community putting in sums, and then this amount was further topped off thanks to major sponsors.” The generosity has seen a total of $2,500 raised for the local appeal. Keith said the sum will now be distributed in areas around Longreach and Muttaburra. “Someone who was extremely supportive of our appeal was Cannon Phil Ward, who makes monthly visits to areas throughout Central Queensland,” Keith said. “In early December Phil will be passing on the donations. He will be talking to the wardens of the church in Longreach and necessary community personnel to make sure that those who are in need receive support.” “The idea is to help those farming families with the essentials that they have been going without during these tough times. We also hope it may help bring some Christmas cheer.” The local Drought Appeal was sponsored by the community of Mount Morgan, the Mount Morgan Rotary Club, the four chapters of the Eastern Star in Central Queensland and the volunteers of Mount Morgan Railway Inc.

Hard work pays off When local student, Adele Tulk commenced the 2014 school year she was focused on achieving her best. Working hard in each of her classes throughout the semesters, the senior student was determined to finish her final year of school on a high. It was a personal goal that has seen some very impressive results. Adele reaped the rewards for her hard work last week, when she was honoured with Mount Morgan High’s most prestigious student award during the end of year Awards Night. The year 12 student took out the Tompky’s Memorial Prize - Dux of the School. It was one of a number of awards Adele received during the evening – each taking her by surprise. “I’ve tried to do my best in all of my subjects this year to get the best results that I could, but the awards were really surprising,” Adele said reflecting on the ceremony last week. “I really wasn’t expecting the Dux award. It was such a surprise for me. I’m still surprised.” A humble outlook, Adele said receiving major awards is something new for her. “It’s funny, before this year I hadn’t received any special awards during high school.” Adele said the awards capped off an already enjoyable year at Mount Morgan State High. “It’s probably been one of the best years at school. I wanted to leave on a good note; in past years I hadn’t tried as hard so for my last year I wanted to really try my best.” The prominent award was presented to Adele by School Patron, Miss Irene Sturgess (pictured). Miss Sturgess also shared Adele’s feeling of surprise during the evening, when she found herself the focus of a special presentation. This year marked Miss Sturgess’ 60th year in education; a milestone which was recognised with a powerpoint presentation made by the school’s senior business students. Adele, who graduates this week, says she plans on furthering her education with a career in nursing. “I am hoping to study at TAFE in Innisfail in aged care, and then continue with those studies and go into nursing.” Her achievements and focus no doubt serve as inspiration for a number of the school’s younger students, with many already appearing to have a determination to achieve their best. Last week’s awards ceremony celebrated the academic, sporting and cultural achievements of the School and its students throughout the year. High achievers of each year level were honoured with Academic and Merit awards, along with overall Top Year student awards.

The Top Student Awards were presented to: Year 8 Top Student- Janaya Bray Year 9 Top Student- Jessica Grange Year 10 Top Student- Keira Martin and Year 11 Top Student- Lachlan Cox. School’s almost out for seniors Gathered in the School of Arts Hall for a group photo last week, the senior class of 2014 joked and laughed as they stood together and willingly waited for the Argus to take a happy snap. The venue seemed a fitting place for a final group photo; a stone’s throw away from their high school, and where the group will soon be celebrating their senior graduation. This Friday, the 27 students will swap their school uniforms for suits and elegant dresses as they round out twelve years of schooling and the countless memories they’ve shared during that time. The classmates will wrap up their education years with an official sendoff assembly at the high school during the day, followed by the senior formal at the School of Arts Hall. The Mount Morgan State High School would like to welcome all interested members of the community to attend the official arrival of the seniors to their formal, and congratulate the students on their major milestone. The students’ official arrival will take place at the front of the School of Arts at 7:00pm (Friday November 21).

Healthy living for Mt Morgan Central Stella Doyle and Bronwyn Jones of Central Queensland Medicare Local Indigenous Health Team have been running a Healthy Living Program for 12 students at our school. It commenced on 21st August and was run for a period of 8 weeks. Students participated in information sessions (mostly about foods and drinks), an activity (based on the information provided in the session), cooking and gardening. Parents and other family members were invited to a celebratory afternoon tea which showcased the variety of foods that the children made during the cooking sessions. Our principal, Mr Blair Harp presented each student with a certificate and booklet to acknowledge their completion of the course.

Upcoming events MMPAD say the more the merrier for this year’s Christmas Tree display 8

From trees decorated with craft items, to those made from scratch out of gardening tools – Mount Morgan’s Christmas Tree Festival has certainly seen some creative entries over the years. Since establishing in 1992, the local festival has seen Mount Morgan usher in the festive season with an annual display of 100+ Christmas trees. Each year, the impressive exhibition is made up of handmade or hand decorated entries; submitted by residents, businesses and organisations from around the community and region. The event will soon be on again – set for December 5th and 6th. As in previous years, Mount Morgan’s School of Arts Hall is set to be transformed into a twinkling wonderland as it plays host to this year’s tree display. Event coordinators, Mount Morgan Promotion and Development, said they are eager to see what the community comes up with. “It’s always exciting to see the tree entries come in, and to see the looks on everybody’s faces as they do the walk around the Hall and see the effort the community has put in,” MMPAD said. “It’s a really fun way of kicking off the festive season.” MMPAD said entries range from the very traditional to the very creative. “A number of organisations and businesses regularly come up with creative ways of representing what they do in the community through their entry.” “We’ve heard a few ideas from business owners in town, and from the sounds of it, we are going to have some very cool trees again this year,” MMPAD said.

Crafty Creation: Young local Billi Dalton with her very own entry for last year’s tree display.

They said there are no set criteria for entries. “Your tree entry can be as traditional or crazy as you like. You can enter a tree on behalf of yourself as a local resident, or you could get your family or a group of friends together and include an entry as a group.” “If you’re involved with a local business, organisation or club – it can also be a really fun way of promoting.” Along with the benefits of getting involved and getting creative, MMPAD said the event is also a special way of showcasing our community. “Over the two evenings that the event is held, hundreds of people roll in to see the tree entries and enjoy what is on offer. It often attracts visitors from throughout the region and the tree entries are a great way of showcasing what our town has to offer and the fun and creativity in the community.”

Along with the regular entrants, MMPAD are warmly welcoming new arrivals.

Tree entries can be delivered to the Mount Morgan School of Arts Hall between 9am and 4pm on Thursday the 4th of December and 8am and 2pm on Friday the 5th of December.

“If you’ve been thinking about including an entry, or you haven’t done one before – we really encourage you to do so,” MMPAD said.

Resting in ANZAC Park is Mount Morgan’s Coronation Light. It stands tall and silent, though there is a plaque at its base with a message that is loud and clear. It reads “Greater Love Hath No Man” – a tribute and powerful reminder of the sacrifice so many have made for their country in warfare and past conflict. Last Tuesday, the Mount Morgan community remembered the nation’s soldiers, in a Remembrance Day service at ANZAC Park. Locals gathered silently for the 11am ceremony, led by Mount Morgan RSL Sub Branch President, Mr Mike Johnston. Reflecting on the service, Mr Johnston said a sincere thanks goes to all who attended. “On behalf of the Mount Morgan RSL Sub Branch, I would like to thank all of the community members who joined us in honouring past soldiers who gave their lives for their country.

“I would also like to thank the Mount Morgan Light Horse Troop for their involvement and Mrs Louise Drochmann for her attendance in memory of her husband Gordon who recently passed away.” Remembrance Service: Mount Morgan RSL Sub Branch President, Mike Johnston addressing the crowd last Tuesday.

Hi Argus readers, Well it’s been another great fortnight in the Mount, with plenty of celebrations – and more to come in the upcoming weeks.

Congratulations:

Firstly, a very big congratulations to all of the students of Mount Morgan State High School who took home awards at last Wednesday’s annual Awards Night. This is always a fantastic evening and it’s a privilege to be able to join in on celebrating the efforts and projects of Mount Morgan High and its students. Each year we also have the privilege of sponsoring one of the awards – the Most Promising Junior Writers Award. Thanks again to Mount Morgan High for this opportunity and congrats to this year’s upcoming writer Jasmine Burt. Of course congratulations also go to the senior class of 2014! We hope your final week of school is wonderful and we look forward to seeing you dressed in your best this Friday.

Christmas has come early CENT SALE:

Don’t miss your chance to take home some fantastic prizes this Sunday!! In aim of raising final funds for this year’s Tree Festival, we will be holding a Christmas comes early Cent Sale. There will be a sausage sizzle 12 noon when the doors open, with the cent sale commencing at 1pm. We hope to see you there!

Christmas Tree Festivalcalling for all interested to enter a tree!

Hello Folks, it’s that time again. We are appealing for assistance from the public in relation to a number of offences. About a month ago an electric fence was stolen from a property on Razorback. The fence was a Gallagher S17 which was black with a solar panel on the front (QP1401457683 ref). Sometime between the 24th and 25th of October 2014 a house on Pattison Street was broken into. The offenders gained access by kicking in the front door. As a result of this two dogs have gone missing. Two miniature dashhounds, one short haired brown colour and one long fur black and tan colour. The brown coloured dog has since been returned but the black and tan dog is still missing (QP1401486741 ref). Around the 3rd and 4th of November 2014 the offender has entered an address on Pattison Street by unknown means and stolen a number of property items including a 65inch TV, DVD player, speakers, garden ornaments, a computer and modem (QP1401578179 ref). Police are appealing for public assistance for any information that may assist in these matters. If you have any information that may assist please call Policelink on 131 444, the Mount Morgan Police Station on 4938 1222 or come into the Police Station during office hours.

This year’s Christmas Tree Festival will be held on Friday the 5th and Saturday the 6th of December. We have decided to hold the event for a little longer this year, with both nights open until 9pm.

News from Mt Morgan Multipurpose Health

In the meantime, we would love to warmly welcome all to work on a tree entry to be a part of this year’s display. They can be as traditional or crazy as you like! Tis the season to be merry, and the more trees the merrier! For further information please contact Camille on 4938 2312.

Our deepest sympathies:

With the highs this past fortnight, there have also been the lows. by Trish & Greg Mathers We have had an interesting couple of weeks, with more injured lorikeets coming in. Some of the previous ones have been released, a couple have died, a baby crow has come into care, and also an injured juvenile pheasant coucal (whoop-whoop bird), who has since recovered and been released – not to mention another little joey. A little swamp wallaby pinkie (no fur), who is doing really well; weighing only 350gms when he came in a few days ago and has since put on 100gms and is starting to colour up. To give you some idea, a can of coke weighs 375gms. He is on 3 hourly feeds around the clock, with some Lectade (re-hydration fluid) in between each feed, as he is slightly dehydrated. He is bright as a button and on the ball for one so young. We have been noticing the declining number of small birds around the main street, and also have noticed that many of the swallow nests have been knocked down. It is against the law to knock down these nests, and for good reason. These small birds use up lots of energy building their nests, and as a general rule they just re-furbish last year’s one. They feed their babies up to 22 times a minute, having to catch insects to feed them. They are doing us a big favour catching all those mozzies and midges etc. Often people think that when the habitat of an animal is destroyed, it will just move on to somewhere else. This is not the case however. Native animals are territorial, and according to studies 90% of relocations fail. Other animals do not like strangers showing up on their doorstep, living in their house and eating their food. They will either attack and kill them or chase them out, and so it goes on. Latest estimates are that there are around 15 million feral cats in Australia eating up to 75 million animals per night!! This is just horrific. It would be a big help if as many people as possible trapped these feral cats and contacted the council to pick them up. It would be doing both the cats and our native animals a big favour. This is the latest little swamp wallaby joey. The person who rescued his mum, who had been hit by a car, named him ‘Lucky”.

... From your State MP Launch of disaster noticeboard

I was pleased to officially turn on the new LED emergency noticeboard at the Mount Morgan Auxiliary Fire Station on Wednesday 12th November. The need for this type of community service was identified by the Local Disaster Management Group after major rain events that lead to flooding and road issues, which impacted the town during and after Cyclone Oswald. Snr Sgt Mark Dean, OIC at Mount Morgan Police contacted me about the need for this noticeboard and I was able to secure funding to bring the project to fruition. The noticeboard will display important information for the local community in times of disaster, and at other times will promote community education messages including smoke alarm reminders, bushfire safety information and local emergency services events. During times of disaster, the community looks to emergency services for information and direction, and this noticeboard is a unique way of providing key messages in a way easily accessible to locals. Congratulations to all involved.

Mount Morgan students excel once again

It was my great pleasure to join with the Mount Morgan State High School community on Wednesday evening to acknowledge the many achievements of students for the 2014 school year. It was also a privilege to have some time to chat with the School Patron, Miss Irene Sturgess, after Cutting of the Cake and also celebrating 60 years of service to Mount Morgan State High School. Congratulations to all award recipients and best wishes for 2015.

Wednesday 10th December … a very special day

I will be back in Mount Morgan again on Wednesday 10th December to attend the Central School awards presentation and I am very much looking forward to spending some time with our primary students. The School is very fortunate to have such a dedicated and hardworking band of teachers and community members who always strive to achieve the best possible facilities, resources and outcomes for their students. Basic vanilla ice cream Hi to all. Christmas is only around the corner and with these heatwave temps we have been having , what else does one think of… yes I scream for Ice Cream! So here is a basic vanilla recipe as well as an egg free recipe for you guys. Wouldn’t it be nice to know what went into your ice cream. Please enjoy and stay cool, Mick. P.S these are not weight watchers recipes lol.

Ingredients

Museum Raffle: The Mount Morgan Historical Museum is now selling tickets for its Christmas Raffle at a $1 a ticket. Drawn at the Christmas Tree Festival, Dec 6th There are many goodies to be won! CWA Raffle Winner: Congratulations to Colleen Kay who was the lucky winner of our linen basket. A sincere thank you to all who purchased tickets. The Calliungal Rural Fire Brigade AGM and Rural Fire Levy: Saturday, December 6th 2014, 9:30am at the Brigade Shed at the Newman Oval. All welcome.

Enrol now for 2015!

• 600ml thick cream • 600ml milk • 1 vanilla bean, split • 12 egg yolks • 150g caster sugar • 200g glucose syrup • 1 ½ tps pure vanilla extract Place the cream and milk in a saucepan. Scrape in the vanilla seeds and add the bean. Bring to the boil, then turn off the heat and set aside for 10 minutes to infuse. Place the egg yolks, glucose syrup, sugar and vanilla extract in the bowl of an electric mixer. Beat until pale. Carefully pour the milk over, and then return to a clean saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring, for about five minutes until it is slightly thickened and coats the back of a wooden spoon. This simple vanilla custard forms the basis of a classic ice-cream recipe. Alternatively you can serve as lovely custard on boiled fruits or like I have in the photo: with chilli & apple juice jelly - homemade of course. Set aside to cool, then refrigerate for 60 minutes. And remove the skin that will form on top before churning in an ice-cream machine. Churn in an ice-cream machine according to the directions of each manufacturer. Alternatively place custard in a plastic container in the freezer until frozen at the edges. Remove from freezer. Beat with an electric beater. Refreeze. Repeat this process two more times. Note: the glucose syrup adds a beautiful mouth feel to this ice cream and kicks it up to the next level of luxury and I do mean luxury.

Egg free ice cream

• 2L single cream • 1 cup double cream • 345g caster sugar • 1 tablespoon vanilla essence • 1 pinch salt Preparation method 1. Combine all ingredients in the freezer container of an ice cream maker. Freeze according to manufacturer’s instructions. Tip: For an extra special treat, use the seeds scraped from a vanilla pod instead of the vanilla essence.
