Mount Morgan Museum adds to D’Arcy’s dedication
The Mount Morgan Historical Museum has added to its dedication to the late William Knox D’Arcy. Last Friday, staff of the Museum officially accepted Mr D’Arcy’s Business Leaders Hall of Fame Award as an addition to their collection, presented by relative of Mr D’Arcy, Kay Dallachy. Mr D’Arcy was inducted into the Business Leaders Hall of Fame by the QUT Business School and the State Library of QLD earlier this year; an award which sees recognition to those, past and present, who have made a significant contribution to Queensland’s business achievements. Undeniably one of the area’s most inspiring businessmen, Mr D’Arcy was recognised at the ceremony on August 4 for his influential role in the establishment of the young Mount Morgan Mine and later with the major success of oil exploration in the Persian Gulf. Mrs Dallachy (a great niece of William Knox D’Arcy through marriage) accepted the award on the evening on behalf of the D’Arcy family, and by request of his family in the UK, presented it to the Mount Morgan Museum last week. “I think this is the appropriate place for the award to be kept.” Mrs Dallachy said at the official induction. “We know that William Knox D’Arcy would have been proud to accept such an award, and have it on display.
“The family in the UK especially requested the award to be presented to the Mount Morgan Museum. Mount Morgan is where it all started for him, so we’re very happy to present it today.” President of the Mount Morgan Historical Museum, Dasher Hunt said the team were honoured to accept the award, recognising it as an impressive addition to their collection. “This award certianly makes an important addition to what we have on display in honour of Mr D’Arcy.” Mr Hunt said. “We sincerely thank the family of William Knox D’Arcy for making this possible.” The award, along with further dedication and details of the late William Knox D’Arcy can be found in Section 2 of the Mount Morgan Museum. The Mount Morgan Museum is located at 87 Morgan Street and is open, from 10am until 4pm, 7 days. Naturally we are amazed at the advancement of technology in this, the 21st century, but perhaps if we delve into the long gone past PLANTS, we see that these made a bigger impact in the world than the electronic age of today. Let us look at just 4 plants that changed history, but there is many more. Firstly is QUININE. Quinine is a genus of tree whose bark can be ground down and used as a cure for Malaria. There are three conditions necessary for the disease to thrive. Firstly is the right mosquito, stagnant water and already infected humans of the disease. In early times this of course played a great impact for the human population who travelled the world and came into contact with people with malaria. Quinine has allowed regions unexplored and oceans away to be found and settled. It is still the biggest fighter of malaria. Then there is the influence of TEA. China dates back thousands of years in its production and originally controlled the world export. The British loved their tea and China highly profited. Great Britain later traded opium for tea and very soon the Chinese became addicted to the substance. Now of course China does not rely on tea. Today the world over a “good old cuppa” is part of life and happens at many occasions. Tea is here to stay for ever. To have a good cup of tea we need SUGAR, our third plant and a substance that humans have become addicted to. Prior to the discovery of the sugar cane, honey was the sweetener and fruits supplied the sugars for energy. Sugar has caused many health problems like obesity, tooth problems and malnutrition and family problems when children want so many lollies. Even the production of the cane has a bad record as it was often produced by horrific slave labour. However we all need sugar. Our fourth plant is BAMBOO. This remarkable product can be harvested every five years therefore resulting in forests not having to be destroyed and it also has strong resistance to diseases, insects, and climate change and requires minimum labour effort. Other positive features are, it is the fastest growing plant in the world, and it is hollow, light and easy for transportation. The first paper ever made by the Chinese was from the inner pulp of the bamboo stalk. The use of bamboo is almost endless but some are musical instruments, fishing rods, houses, furniture etc. Bamboo has a great role for the future because of building materials and more recently for floor coverings. Life today still depends on numerous plants discovered centuries ago, so if we THINK CLEAN – Be TIDY we assist our air to be cleaner and thus more productive so life can go on.

Past pupils of Hamilton Creek Primary School celebrated their years of early education this month, attending the 2012 Hamilton Creek School Reunion on Saturday, October 13. Over 100 people headed to the Mount Morgan Golf Club for the celebrations, with the guest list including former students, family and friends, along with special guest and former long serving Head Teacher, Mr EC Daniels. The five hour celebrations saw attendees enjoy a picnic lunch with old friends, relishing some of their favourite school year stories. The day also included a powerpoint presentation, photograph display, and official cutting of the Reunion cake. Speeches were made by MC for the day, Brian Ramsay, Mr EC Daniels, along with his son Wayne and daughter Sandra, as well as June Young. The event was organized by former students, Merle Curtis, Dawn Reed, Val Hubner, June Young, along with Mr Daniels’s daughter, Sandra. On discussing the event, Mrs Curtis said: “It was a terrific day, and was great to see so many former students catching up.” “We would like to thank all past pupils and families who attended and helped to make it such a great day. We would also like to thank the Golf Club for their kind assistance and the use of their facilities on the day.” About Hamilton Creek Primary School: In the early 1900s, members of the Hamilton Creek Building Committee pointed out the need for its own school; with children at the time walking around two miles to the nearest school in Mount Morgan. The school was built in 1908 and remained in operation until 1972. Past Head Teachers include: A.W Black, N.J Brazil, F.McKinlay, N. Behm, H.J Breusch, A.C. Brinston, E.C. Daniels, R.W. Douglas, J.C. Dionysius, and F.J Henderson. Source: Centenary of the town of Mount Morgan 1882 – 1982. As the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, MP Chris Bowen certainly recognises the importance of family ties and the celebration of family history.
For local resident and Mount Morgan High teacher, Anna Kahler, many a day is spent at the front of the classroom teaching the art of Drama.
Taking a trip to the Rockhampton Region recently, Mr Bowen took the opportunity to visit an area which he personally considers as “an important part of his family history”- Mount Morgan.
There are times however, when Anna finds herself in front of an audience other than her students; putting her teachings into practice and taking to the stage herself.
Joined by Member for Capricornia, Kirsten Livermore, Mr Bowen headed to the local area on Monday October 15, spending an afternoon delving into his early family history as well as catching up with students of Mount Morgan Central. “My great, great grandfather migrated here in 1887 from Wales and was a miner here at the Mount Morgan Mine.” Mr Bowen said, on his early connections. “My family was here from the late 1880s until after World War I. “So while I was in the Region, I wanted to call in and see the area.” Mr Bowen said his local visit included a walk around the Mount Morgan Historical Museum as well as a trip to the Mount Morgan Cemetery. “We popped up to the Cemetery and found his (Mr Bowen’s great, great grandfather’s) grave still there.” “It’s been really good to see the area; it’s been an important part of our family history.” The visit to the area also saw Mr Bowen, along with Ms Livermore, take a walk through the Prep classrooms of Mount Morgan Central State School, stopping for a chat with the junior students before a session of “Questions and Answers” with the Year 7s. The Hon Chris Bowen MP visits Mount Morgan, with Member for Capricornia, Kirsten Livermore (who also shares family ties with Mount Morgan). Over the past year, this talented local has dedicated much of her spare time to on stage performances, appearing in Rockhampton’s Guys and Dolls in 2011 and now sealing a spot in Rockhampton’s latest stage hit – Hairspray. Based on the 1988 John Walters film, Hairspray the musical takes a creative look at the injustices of American society in the 1960s; incorporating a witty storyline with a range of 1960’s-style dance music and “downtown” Rhythm and Blues songs. The story follows the life and big dreams of ‘Tracy’ – a 1960s teenager from Baltimore, Maryland, who longs to dance on the ‘Corny Collins Show’. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she goes from being an outcast to a major celebrity and later finds herself faced with a range of challenges: including outperforming her arch rival, trying to win the love of her life and launching a campaign to integrate the show. Anna is part of the group, The Dynamites. Discussing the upcoming stage performance and Anna’s role, Producer Pat McKenna said: “The Rockhampton Musical Union Choir has been rehearsing since August and Anna has travelled down the Mount Morgan range three times a week to rehearse for her role in Hairspray. “Anna is part of the group The Dynamites. In the story the Dynamites sing on the Corny Collins Show. They are also featured in the production number ‘Welcome to the 60’s’. Anna powerful voice is well suited to her role.” Hairspray, presented by the Rockhampton Musical Union Choir will be at the Pilbeam theatre for a limited season of 4 performances from the 25th until the 28th of October. For further details on the event, please phone the Pilbeam Theatre on: 4927 4111

Students get ready to graduate

After more than 2,000 days of school, or twelve years of formal education, school life is coming to an end for 30 local students.
“The whole thing is exciting, but for the girls especially, I think the biggest part of the planning can be the outfits.” says Tamika.
In just a little under a month, the 2012 Seniors of Mount Morgan High will officially graduate high school, heading through the school gates as students for the final time on Friday, November 16.
“As fun as it is, it can also be a little stressful deciding what you want. I tried on at least 50 dresses.”
While it will no doubt be a mixture of emotions on the day for the graduates, excitement is currently proving the main sentiment for the students, with final preparations for their graduation day and its evening celebrations in motion. Graduation day is set to see the students attend school for a final school assembly, before heading off mid-morning in preparation for the night’s big celebration; the Year 12 Formal. Set to be a glamorous end to their schooling years, the evening will see the students dress in their finest, and joined by family and friends to celebrate their major milestone. The evening will follow close on twelve months of planning, carried out by the seniors and school staff.
The experience proved a little differently for Casey, who says she was lucky to find her dress quickly, spotting it online. “I found my dress on the internet and liked it straight away which was good, as I think that can be one of the trickiest parts.” Along with seeing each other donning their best outfits, Casey says the event as a whole is something the entire class is looking forward to. “I think we are all just really excited for the entire formal.” Casey said. “It’s all about celebrating our years of schooling and enjoying possibly the last time that we will all be together in the same place at once.” See next issue for more on the 2012 Seniors. Pictured: Casey Lennox, Tamika Hosmer and Christelle Ward.
“We began preparing for the formal about this time last year.” Says senior student, Christelle Ward. “We started fundraising in 2011 and continued with it early this year. We also chose our decorations and colour schemes for the hall pretty early too.” This term sees final preparations for the event, with the students finalising seating arrangements, along with mastering the steps of the Senior dance, the Pride of Erin. Looking back on the range of preparations, Christelle, along with Seniors, Casey Lennox and Tamika Hosmer agree that one of the more difficult of the tasks for them personally was the organising of outfits. 2012 to mark ten years for Christmas Tree Festival
Saint Mary’s Anglican Parish is pleased to inform the community that the Mount Morgan Christmas Tree Festival and Fete will once again be held, marking its tenth year this year. The 2012 Festival will be held in the Mount Morgan School of Arts on the evenings of Friday the 7th of December and Saturday the 8th of December, from 6:00pm to 8:30pm both evenings. Along with the impressive tree display, this year’s lineup will also feature the annual favourites, including Country Western Singers, Carols by Candlelight, Santa Claus (with free gifts for children), free rides and slides, student art competition and sausage sizzle. This year will also see new inclusions to further add to the lineup. Mrs Val Gibble will display an extensive, impressive collection of International Nativity Sets. We hope to also include a display of “Christmas dressed” hand crafted teddy bears. Christmas decorated table candles will also be displayed, further enhancing our tables of decorated Christmas Trees.
We thank the community based organisations, business houses and the members of the public for their great support of the Christmas Tree Festival over the past nine years. It is because of your loyal support that this community event continues each year successfully. We would like to once again invite you to be a part of this annual event and welcome you to help us celebrate the milestone of ten years. We would also like to inform that it is because of the efforts of this Festival in Mount Morgan, that the Anglican Parish of Yeppoon and surrounding areas took part in the 2011 Festival, entering a Christmas Tree and bringing a bus load of visitors to view the event. This year, the Yeppoon Parish will be holding their very own Christmas Tree Festival on the evenings of the 30th of November and the 1st of December. We would like to encourage you to take a trip to Yeppoon and enjoy this social event also. For further information, please contact Keith and Annie on: 4938 1286 or Noel, on: 4938 1632.

Rural Fire Service Review meetings announcements: A series of meetings will be held with Rural Fire Service (RFS) volunteers across the state in coming weeks as part of a special Ministerial review into the RFS. The Review Committee, chaired by the Member for Mirani Ted Malone, would use the meetings to gather important information towards making recommendations on revitalising the RFS. These meetings will give volunteers the opportunity to provide input into the future structure, function, leadership and funding of the RFS, our volunteers will no doubt have extremely valuable information which will help us deliver a world class Rural Fire Service while providing greater efficiency, less red tape and more autonomy to volunteers. The meetings would be held in various locations to allow as many volunteers as possible to have input into the review. WILDLIFE MATTERS by Trish Mathers (Wildlife Carer) Ph. 0400 591 504
A sad case arrived at our place a few weeks ago. It was a little Eastern Grey Kangaroo joey who was so emaciated that he was just a floppy rag doll. All he could do was move his tongue. He was found on a road with no sign of his mum. The lady who found him did her best to look after him, but unfortunately she was given lots of wrong information, and his condition deteriorated as a result. She, being not from this local area, had tried to find a wildlife carer and was unable to. He was given far too much fluid and not enough milk formula, so he was starved and dehydrated. The original vet she had contacted was also no help to her. Please, please, if you do find such an animal, keep on the phone until you have a good result. 1300 ANIMAL is the first and foremost number to try as you will be put straight on to a wildlife carer through that number. If unsuccessful, then please phone your local vet, and if not a good outcome then try another vet. Not all vets are knowledgeable about wildlife. The little joey is recovering well, and has started to hop around, albeit weakly. He is on his way to a carer who has a little one the same age as him. The baby Greater Glider who was featured in the last article is doing really well, and is also on her way to another carer. Unfortunately, for health reasons, I have to have a break from wildlife caring. (Probably have earned one after 12 years of 24/7). I need to be healthy in order to best look after the animals that come into care, many requiring 3 hourly feeds around the clock. Please, if you find a sick, injured or orphaned animal, throw a towel or similar over it, gently pick it up (avoid being bitten or scratched), place it in a cardboard box, carry box or even a pillow case, keep it warm and quiet and if you are at all able, take it to the vets. Vets do not charge members of the public for dropping in a native animal. They will then organise a carer to pick it up if needs be. All costs are borne by the carer, not the wonderful people who drop them off. If taking it to the vet is not an option, then please phone 1300 ANIMAL, or your vet. A big thanks to all those who have supported us with donations, making pouches etc. Also thanks to the MMPAD for printing this article each edition.

Preparing your property: With fire activity ramping up across Central Queensland, it is important to be aware of how you can prepare your property for potential fires. Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) Regional Manager of Rural Operations for Central Region, Brian Smith, said there was a number of ways to prepare homes and increase the chances of survival during a bushfire. “It is essential for everyone to have a Bushfire Survival Plan to detail exactly how you will prepare and what action you will take if threatened by a bushfire,” Mr Smith said. “The plan must be in writing, practiced regularly and take into consideration the ages and physical capabilities of everyone in your household including children and the elderly. Once a Bushfire Survival Plan is in place it is important for people to know what action to take when a bushfire approaches. This can include: monitoring your local radio and television for updates; locating your bushfire kit, which you would have prepared earlier; put on protective clothing; drinking plenty of water; and moving all loose furniture inside and cars into secure undercover locations where possible. “On a severe, extreme or catastrophic fire weather day the safest option for survival is to leave well in advance of any fire,” Mr Smith said. If you are a landholder, consider taking actions like clearing green rubbish, cleaning out gutters and completing hazard reduction burns after obtaining a permit. “Mow around houses and out buildings, remove rubbish piles and clear any excess trees and shrubs away from your house, especially the window areas,” Mr Smith said.
Update on vegetation fires in Mount Morgan area There is no denying that it has been a busy past two months in the Mount Morgan area for urban and rural fire crews; called to action on what has seemed a regular basis to bring a number of vegetation fires under control. Although this time of year marks the beginning of bushfire season, not all fires during this time have been recognised as permitted burns- with a number announced by Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) as suspicious, possibly deliberately lit. As a result, QFRS, in partnership with Queensland Police Service have launched “Taskforce Vulcan” in the area – an operation to identify, investigate and prosecute where possible, people who deliberately light fires. QFRS would like to encourage the Mount Morgan Community to assist the Services with this task when able, by noting any suspicious behavior or activities and phoning Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000.
The hard work and dedication of the fire crews certainly doesn’t go unnoticed by the local community. Below is a special thank you and photograph supplied to the Argus by local resident, Nicholai von Tonslamann, following a vegetation fire in close proximity to his Baree home earlier this month. “We had little sleep on the 10th of October at 17 Kyonet St Baree, but the Rural Fire Brigade did a wonderful job and everything was kept safe! Many thanks to the volunteers and emergency services staff who worked so hard until the wee hours of the morning to protect our property.”
“Having short, well maintained grass areas around your house and buildings helps reduce the fire impact and gives firefighters better access for control should fire threaten. Fire burning up trees and shrubs near windows can break the glass and allow burning embers to enter the house.” Mr Smith also recommended that residents make sure their properties are clearly numbered and they are aware of the best access points for fire vehicles, so there is no delay in crews responding should an emergency arrive. For more information on how to develop a Bushfire Survival Plan, prepare for bushfire season, learn what to do when a bushfire approaches and download a bushfire survival guide visit www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au. Volunteers welcome! The Rural Fire and Rescue Service is always looking for new volunteers. For further information on how you could become a volunteer member of the Rural Fire Service, please contact the Rural Operations Rockhampton Area Office on: 4938 47 35

It was an eventful weekend for the Mount Morgan Dee Bowls Club on the 6th and 7th of October, with the area hosting the Dee Bowls Invitation Fours. The event welcomed 14 teams, seeing local residents in support, along with bowling members from Boyne Island, Moura, Emu Park, Yeppoon and Rockhampton. The winners for the weekend were: Wally Edwards; Fred Passmore; Bill Cameron; and Trent Smalley, with Runners Up being a team from Boyne Island, and third place going to Peter Matthew’s team from Wowan. A big thanks goes to all who supported the event. Over $5,000 was raised over the weekend, which will assist the Club’s continued operation for at least another year. Next year the club will have its concrete ditchboards placed, after using the funding granted from OLGR. Content supplied by Dee Bowls Secretary, Kevin Fox. Pictured: Winners of the Invitation Fours. Be Informed
It is important to stay informed and aware of what is happening in your area. TUNE IN, LOG ON, LISTEN OUT AND ACT!
TUNE IN
To your local radio and TV station to listen for warnings and weather updates and local community safety announcements. LOG ON To the internet to get up-to-date and accurate information. Use reliable sources such as the Rockhampton Regional Council Website as it will contain local information on the emergency, information on the evacuation centres and evacuation routes and information on assistance after the disaster. There are further websites listed in the contacts section of this booklet.
LISTEN OUT
Emergency Services and Rockhampton Regional Council utilise different methods of ensuring the community is promptly warned. They have specific systems in place that you should be aware of. The Standard Emergency Warning Signal (SEWS): the siren sound used at the beginning of serious warnings on radio and television. Pay careful attention to the message that follows SEWS and act immediately on the advice given. Emergency Alerts: these are the voice messages to your landline and text messages to your mobile telephone based on the location of the billing address held by the telephone service company. Loud-hailers: megaphones are mounted on vehicles playing announcements informing the areas they drive through of important information. Door-knocks: Emergency Services’ personnel may door-knock your local area to pass on warnings. The information in the warnings can mean further action is required. Ensure all householders are aware of the warning and advice provided. Check on neighbours and friends who may need special assistance or may not be aware of the warnings. If a disaster is imminent you may need to activate your Emergency Plan. The sooner you are aware, the sooner you can act and lessen the risks.
RESOURCES: Household Emergency Plan - www.disaster.qld.gov.au | Disasters Happen DVD - www.rrc.qld.gov.au This project is supported by funding provided under the Community Development and Recovery Package, which is a joint initiative of the Australian and Queensland Governments under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements.
