After giving praise to those who are trying to have our own town so tidy and clean it is sad to report that during this week the area in the lower garden section of Morgan Street (where a picnic table is available), the area that surrounds was in a disgraceful state. Bottles, food cartons papers etc. were thrown everywhere and the unforgivable bit is the BIN is about 2 metres from the table. The flower garden can be such a picture and visitors and locals should be allowed to enjoy this spot in tidy surroundings. Shop owners opposite in that area have complained of this unnecessary untidiness also. Please pass the message on….…USE THE BINS. Now to our “Snippets of History” commencing with the year 1968. It was in that year the St. Enoch’s Presbyterian Church opened a Kindergarten Centre, in the Church Hall. It continued for many years but of course now the Church does not have Sunday services either. How times have changed. In 1968 after many years of commercial bread making the last bakery, Ward’s Bakery situated in Neil Street closed down. It had operated in that street for many years and was once called “The Railway Bakery. At one time Mount Morgan boasted no less than six (6) bakeries. Thank goodness for Barry and Allison nowadays.

Mount Morgan Limited became a subsidiary of PekoWallsend Ltd and a new era of mining was commenced. Geopeko Limited commenced operations from the General Office but later moved to its own office in 1971. A brand new Hospital was erected on the same site as the old one at a cost of $540,000. The original building had been constructed in the year 1890. Now of course the 1968 hospital is no more.

1968 saw the Carmody Bridge replace the old wooden structure that had been there for many years. The estimated cost of the Bridge was $112,000. It was named after the late James Griffin Carmody who had been Chairman of the Mount Morgan Shire Council from May 1949 until April 1970, a long term of office. For some reason or other this bridge was never officially opened despite being an important link on the Burnett Highway. We sign off with an interesting item. “Warriors are not what you think of Warriors”. The Warrior is not someone who fights, because no one has the right to take another life. The Warrior is one who sacrifices himself for the good of others. His task is to take care of the elderly, the defenceless, those who cannot provide for themselves and above all - the children, the future of humanity. Written by - SITTING BULL (1831 – 1890). Mark and Sarah strike gold for the Silver Wattle Happy Campers: Mount Morgan Silver Wattle Caravan Park owners, Mark and Sarah Dalton, together with their children Billi and Diesel.
When Mark and Sarah Dalton bought the Mount Morgan Silver Wattle Caravan Park some 15 months ago, they hit the ground running. New additions to the park, refurbishments to cabins and even the introduction of a camp kitchen, veggie garden and a daily happy hour have been some of what the pair have accomplished since taking over the complex last July. And their hard work is certainly starting to pay off. News of the local park and Mark and Sarah’s warm hospitality was recently making waves on Facebook, by guests impressed with their stay.
It’s easy to see that the duo make it their business to see guests feel at home – offering the use of the park’s camp kitchen and library as part of the accommodation. There’s also happy hour, a veggie garden, and even free range eggs available; compliments of the park’s hens. It’s this kind of approach that sees their guests so happy, and sometimes even sad to leave. “It is really exciting when we hear good feedback from our guests, and they often stay longer than planned,” Sarah said. She said it isn’t simply the Silver Wattle that they enjoy.
The comments attracted the attention of the national monthly publication, Caravan and Motorhome on Tour, and it wasn’t long before Mark and Sarah received a call from the publication’s staff.
“It’s the whole town– we are always hearing good reports about the local businesses in town; the great meals from places like the Grand Hotel, the friendly service from the petrol station, to the quaint antique shops in East Street.”
“Caravan and Motorhome on Tour magazine gave us a call out of the blue and said they had heard about us on Facebook,” Sarah said on their recent good news.
The nationwide promotion follows an already exciting past few months for Mark and Sarah. The pair have recently joined the Kui Parks chain; which is a loyalty program aimed at the Grey Nomad traveller. They were also proud to announce the newest introduction to the park.
“They said several of our guests had nominated us to be featured in their magazine.” “Guests spoke of their wonderful stay at the Silver Wattle, as well as the ‘good old fashioned small-town hospitality of the entire town,” Sarah said. Naturally, Sarah and Mark were ecstatic and agreed without hesitation. The Mount Morgan Silver Wattle Caravan Park was chosen to be the publication’s next “Park of the Month” – a special feature of the magazine which highlights caravan parks around the country. It’s exciting promotion for the park, with each monthly issue distributed throughout the country, with a subscribership of 20,000. Describing the park as a “hidden gem” the magazine’s feature highlights the efforts made by Mark and Sarah and all the accommodation stay has to offer. And what’s on offer isn’t a short list.
“We recently invested in a dump point, so Mount Morgan can be seen as a more RV friendly town,” Sarah said. “A lot of people were literally bypassing Mount Morgan all together because so many vans these days are selfcontained and people were going elsewhere because they have a dump point. But now we’ve got one.” She said there are also more plans set for the future. “Some of our plans are to open up more sites over this summer. We are moving some of our cabins out to open up more sites. This winter we had a few days where we were so busy we had to turn people away which was exciting but terrible at the same time. We don’t want to ever do that again. We are also building new cabins as well and updating a few things.” In the meantime, you can catch the Mount Morgan Silver Wattle in this month’s issue of Caravan and Motorhome on Tour.

Golf talents to take Cody abroad
He may have only taken up golf two years ago, but it’s safe to say that Cody Curtis has already comfortably gotten into the swing of things. Despite only picking up a golf club a short time ago, the young local is proving he has what it takes to go far and wide in the sport. All the way to America, in fact. The 15 year old talent has caught the attention of sporting scouts for National Scouting Report (NSR), who have recently approached him with some exciting news. Cody has been offered the opportunity to earn a scholarship at an American college. “At NSR, we scout and promote student-athletes from all sports, year 8 to second year of university, who have potential to take up full-time US College Sport,” Business Manager at NSR, Keri Clarke said. “We are endorsed by Golf Queensland and recently invited all potential candidates to showcase their talent at an event and try out in Brisbane.” Cody was among those to receive an invitation and made a fast impression on the scouts. “Cody was definitely a stand out candidate,” Keri said. “He has a natural ability and the drive to take that even further. We were impressed by the potential he has shown already. He has dropped ten shots off his handicap in one year which shows great initiative and is impressive.” Although strongly focused on sporting abilities, Keri said it’s a combination of factors that see the aspiring sportspeople selected for a scholarship. “Cody also has a fantastic attitude – which is a big factor for these things. A lot of what goes into college golf or any college sport is attitude. You are part of a family, living on campus, working with a coach and travelling. He also has a really supportive family here in Australia. “We are really looking forward to working with Cody and seeing what he can achieve,” Keri said. Cody’s scholarship opportunity will see him head to America in 2017, the year following completion of high school. Over four years he will represent his college playing golf; practising on a regular basis during the college semesters and competing in tournaments around the country each fortnight. Cody will also be studying a bachelor degree of his choice. It’s set to be hard work, but according to Keri it won’t be without fun. “It isn’t just about golf or just about school – but about the experience of it all,” she said.
“He’ll be travelling, improving his game and creating some lifelong friendships.” Discussing the news of his scholarship, Cody says it’s still hard to believe. “I was really surprised and I’m still really surprised,” he said. “I didn’t think I would get it. It’s really exciting.” While the American adventure may still be far into the future, Cody says the time frame will give him the chance to decide on his studies. “I’m not certain what I would like to study for the bachelor degree yet, but I have been looking up a lot of the colleges and what they offer.” “There are a lot of colleges to choose from, but in the end it will be narrowed down to what course I do.” It’s set to be an exciting venture for the inspiring teen, and one which he says he has his grandfather to thank for. “I started playing golf mainly because my pop used to play all the time,” Cody said on his initial interest with the sport. “I didn’t used to think all too much of it for a while but I started to get into it when I finished playing football. I gave it a try and got used to it and pretty soon I really liked it.”

It may have been more than 80 years ago, but Olga Evans still easily recalls the day she became a member of the Mount Morgan Saint Mary’s Anglican Church congregation. “I can still see myself sitting there in the middle row for my confirmation,” she said, looking around Saint Mary’s last Sunday. The 93 year old Yeppoon resident was one of 70 people to attend the Church’s service last week and to join in the celebrations of its 125th birthday. The service was part of a weekend celebration held by Saint Mary’s, which also included a mini fete on Saturday. Arranged by the Saint Mary’s Parish Council, the days’ events celebrated the Church’s time and presence in the community since opening its doors in October of 1889. For many attendees present, the milestone was something also celebrated on a personal level. For Olga, although no longer residing in Mount Morgan, she says Saint Mary’s holds a special place in her heart. Olga’s grandmother began attending Saint Mary’s soon after moving from Wales in around 1910. It later became the Church Olga’s mother attended and where her parents were married in 1918. It was also the Church Olga and her late husband Clive exchanged their wedding vows in 1948, and where their eldest daughter was baptised. “It does have a special place in my heart, very much so,” Olga said during last Sunday’s celebrations. “It’s where my journey in the church began. I was confirmed here at Saint Mary’s when I was nine. This November I will have been confirmed 84 years.” Her confirmation is one of a number of childhood memories centred on Saint Mary’s. “I remember my brother, sisters and I did lots of things through the church as children. My mother was a very devoted church goer and she worked on everything – you know, the mother’s union, ladies guild, all those things. “I can remember particularly when we would come to the Good Friday service and it was a 3 hour service and mum was there with all of us kids. We stayed the 3 hours and our reward was that as soon as the service was over and we got home, we got to have a hot cross bun. We weren’t allowed to have it before then.” And it isn’t just the memory that has stayed with Olga. “I still do that today. Despite the fact that they’re out all around the place as soon as Christmas is over, I can’t seem to eat a hot cross bun until Good Friday,” she laughed.
Olga also recalled the large congregation Saint Mary’s has enjoyed over its years – with Sunday school regularly hosting a bumper crowd and some exciting events. “It was quite a large Sunday school. I remember we even used to put on plays. I think I was about 11 when we put on a play called “The way to Bethlehem”. It was about a two to three hour play. We played it two nights and also took it to Rockhampton. So that’s what the Sunday school was like at that time.” It wasn’t just the Church’s activities that Olga recalls. She said the social gathering and even the journey to Saint Mary’s is something worth remembering. “We used to come to church regularly and we used to walk. Everybody did, because nobody had any cars. My grandmother too. She lived right up near the Dam and they used to walk from there to Church every Sunday,” Olga said.
7
Discussing the weekend’s milestone, Saint Mary’s Parish Council Secretary Keith Hare said it was these kinds of reflections and special family connections which made the celebrations so enjoyable. “It was a terrific weekend,” he said. “The morning tea on Sunday especially was just absolutely abuzz with chatting. Some people hadn’t seen each other for many years and had the chance to catch up again. People were reminiscing on many things. It was wonderful.” Keith said the celebrations were a reflection of what so many love about the Church. “The Church lived up to its reputation of being a place for fellowship and a love for one another. The harmony of the people that were there was something special– they were prepared to mix with everyone and the Parish councillors worked together well to host the event and promote the atmosphere that the church has.
Above: The Saint Mary’s Parish Council were very happy to welcome Bishop of the Dioceses of Rockhampton, Bishop David Robinson to Sunday’s celebrations. Pictured is the Bishop conducting the morning’s service.
“It was one of the weekends where everything we hoped for we received, and for us that was a gift from God.” Pictured left (top): Saint Mary’s has always been special to Olga, even right down to its seats. Pictured is Olga seated on a pew that was dedicated to her late father, Mr Ernest Glazebrook. A seat dedicated to the Glazebrook family can also be found in the front yard of Saint Mary’s. George and Caroline living the dream with Motel and Van Park
Workplace cutbacks are never easy, but for George Watt it was what sparked an exciting opportunity. When the former Brisbane resident was made redundant at his workplace, he didn’t sit idle. Instead, he decided it was the perfect opportunity for a big change. Eager to move away from the hustle and bustle of the city, George together with his partner Caroline Gibson, decided it was time to look into something they had wanted to do for some time – own and operate a caravan park. “It’s the lifestyle,” George said on what drew the pair in to the idea. “It’s relaxed and comfortable,” Caroline added. “And we wanted something that we could do on our own as our own bosses and something that would keep us busy.” The pair found their wish granted when they discovered that the Mount Morgan Motel and Van Park was available. Visiting the park and looking about Mount Morgan, they decided they were only too happy to take it on. George and Caroline officially commenced their venture at the van park one month ago; taking over from long term owners and well known former locals, Paul and Sharon Draper. Along with the hustle and bustle, the pair leave behind their former occupations. George worked as a graphic designer, and Caroline leaves behind ten years as an aged care worker.
The couple’s new uniforms come complete with red and white tartan trimmings – a token of their former homeland. “We’ve brought a little bit of Scotland with us,” Caroline said. The pair say they are only too happy with how things are starting off. “We are really enjoying it so far,” Caroline said. “Mount Morgan is a nice town. Very nice people, it’s quiet and peaceful.” “Great climate too,” George added. “It’s a nice spot to spend our time and a change from the noise of the city.”
Prior to the city, George and Caroline both grew up in Scotland.
Now settled in, the pair say they have future plans for the park.
Although both moving to Australia two decades ago, it wasn’t until recently that they met.
“We are planning to introduce solar electricity to the park, also some electric BBQs, a cover over the pool, and a few things here and there,” Caroline said.
“We met about four years ago,” George said. “I moved to Australia about 25 years ago, and Caroline moved here about 23 years ago.”

The Mount Morgan Pensioners and Superannuates League meeting was held on the 25th of last month, at the School of Arts Hall. Included was a special afternoon tea for our over 80’s. This is an annual occasion for the group and is a celebration in honour of club members turning 80 years of age, or over. The event is unique to the local area, with the Mount Morgan group recognised as the only Branch countrywide to hold an annual event to honour members who are over 80 years of age.

MGs trip to the Mount
The MG Club of Rockhampton Chapter, together with the Early Falcon Car Club of Qld Rockhampton, recently enjoyed a combined run to Mount Morgan. The run, which was held on Sunday the 21st of September, commenced with a meet at the Kershaw Gardens in Rockhampton. From there, it was off to Mount Morgan. We first stopped at the Bouldercombe Park for morning tea along the way, and then cruised up to Mount Morgan via the new Range Road. Our morning included a cruise past the Mount Morgan Dam, where people had gathered for the Silver Wattle Festival (2nd year running), followed by a stop at the Swinging Bridge for a chat and walk across. The rest of our morning included a trip to the local Historical Museum, while we left the MGs and Falcons on display in the spare allotment by the Grand Hotel.
Our last stop in the Mount was the Grand – for lunch, where we enjoyed a lovely meal and chit chat. A big thank you to the lady looking after the museum, and also to the staff at the Grand Hotel for looking after us so well. Leaving the Hotel in the early afternoon, we headed down the Razor Back Road to the Kabra Hotel for a pit stop where the MG’s and the Ford Club parted ways. We then ventured onto the Southside McDonalds for a well earned coffee and ice-cream before home. A great day was had by all and lots to eat and drink and probably no tea for most that night. Hi Folks, this week I would like to introduce our new addition to the Mount Morgan Police. Hi, my name is Phil Templeton. I have been working in Mount Morgan for the past 3 months. Prior to coming to the mountain, I have spent time in the Bundaberg Region as well as Rockhampton. I have been living in Brisbane for the past few years and moved to the Central Region for a change in life style. I love all forms of sport and have played many seasons of AFL and American Football. I am currently the adopt-a-cop for both the Mount Morgan Primary School and High School. I am always free to speak with anyone who wishes to raise any issues in relation to this topic and would love to hear from you.
Hi Argus readers, I recently read that there are 12 weeks left until Christmas. Firstly, that’s crazy! How fast this year has flown. Secondly, that means it’s even less time to wait until the
2014 Christmas Tree Festival!!
Many of you would have read last year, that our organisation has taken on this event. For ten successful years prior, the Mount Morgan Christmas Tree Festival was organised and hosted by the Saint Mary’s Parish. This year’s event is set for Friday the 5th and Saturday the 6th of December. Each year, this event sees the Mount Morgan School of Arts decked with an impressive number of Christmas trees. Each tree is decorated by residents, businesses and organisations from around the area. Each entry becomes part of a striking festive display and an impressive exhibit of the community’s creativity and culture. There will also be market stalls, carols and entertainment. The Saturday evening will also include children’s amusements and a visit from Santa! Do you have an entry for this year’s display? We would like to and warmly welcome you to become part of this event and submit a decorated tree to be included in this year’s display. There is no charge to submit a tree and entry is open to all interested. Calling all stall holders? If you are interested in holding a stall at this year’s Christmas Tree Festival, please contact us on 4938 2312, or email: mmpad@bigpond.com

by Trish & Greg Mathers A really cute little animal (macropod – big feet) that we may find around the outskirts of Mount Morgan, Struck Oil etc. is the Rufous Bettong. These little creatures look like very small wallabies, but with much shorter front arms. They measure about 385mm (head and body) and the tail is about 360mm. Rufous Bettongs have coarse fur, which is grey to reddish brown, hence the name. They also have a hairy muzzle. They are marsupials, (have a pouch) and have a sufficiently prehensile tail (can be used like an arm) to be able to carry nesting material. They pick long grass and carry it in their tail, which they roll up to hold it, to their nesting site, and build themselves a round grass nest with a single entrance which are placed in a shallow excavation, and are generally placed against a log, tree or grass clump, and will build up to 5 nests. Occassionally they are found in open ground. A carer who had raised quite a few was very amused by one of them making itself at home in her laundry and building a nest of undies and socks. They are found mostly on the eastern side of the Great Dividing Range from roughly around Cairns down to about the Mid-North Coast of N.S.W. ‘Rufies’ have really short ears, and huge eyes. Their beautiful little faces would melt your heart, they are just so gorgeous. According to ‘books’ they emerge about 40 minutes after sunset, but from experience I have only seen them emerge well into the night, often early hours of the morning, and spend the night browsing on herbs and grasses and digging for roots and tubers. They will also eat underground fungi. The range of Rufous Bettongs is large, with males covering 75-110 hectares and females 45-60 hectares, and they may travel up to 5km per night to feed. It is very sad that, at the moment, there are only around 200 Pygmy Possums in the wild. They are critically endangered, yet in the Victorian ski slopes an application has been made to destroy the habitat of the last remaining colony in order to extend ski slopes. Sadly this will mean total extinction of these beautiful tiny little creatures. Recently the CSIRO trapped 33 feral cats. They were disected and in their stomachs were the remains of 108 native animals (that would be just the last few days feeds probably). Our poor native animals have little hope. Just one cat can have 25,000 offspring in 5 years.

Bacon, beef & beans chilli with chicken rice Now this one can be cooked in the slow cooker inside - which is dead easy. Put it on in the morning and serve for tea that night, or in a casserole dish in the oven or chargrill/smoker, or even out camping in a camp oven. Either way, a long slow cook is to grow the flavors. Now for this recipe, I’ve taken good old beef mince and turned it into a trail blazer by adding the beans and bacon then heating it up a bit with the chilli. You could serve it on a tortilla, or in taco shells with mash or as I have in this picture - with your choice of rice. This is also great in jaffles the next day. Please enjoy my take on Bacon Beef & Beans Chilli! Until next time keep on cookin. Mick
Ingredients
• 500 minced rump or topside • 2 X 440g tins of baked beans (your choice) • 1 X 440g tin of chick peas • 500g diced frozen veggies • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1 cup onion finely chopped • ½ cup hot chilli sauce • ½ cup Worcestershire sauce • ½ cup tomato sauce • ½ cup BBQ sauce • 1 teaspoon cumin ground • 2 clove garlic, minced • ½ teaspoon hot chilli powder (more it you like hotter) • 1 teaspoon salt • 2 cups beef stock • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper • 4 teaspoons sweet paprika - you may need a bit of corn flour & water paste to thicken.
How I do it:
Simply place all ingredients in slow cooker - stir thoroughly. Cover and cook on “low” for 6-8 hours or “high” for 3-4 hours. P.S I’ve been asked to do a few Vegetarian recipes. I have a lot so I will put one in the next Argus. Drop me a line via the Argus if you’re looking for a recipe for a party or you’re looking for an old favorite recipe which you maybe have lost.
