With the hot summer days fast approaching the good news is that the swimming pool is now open and at a realistic price of $2 for all age groups. Jason the Manager/Swimming Instructor is very keen to get swimming classes going for both the children and adults and also aerobic classes. This is a great opportunity to get your child to learn to swim which is a positive in life and certainly no load to carry. If you have a birthday or Christmas party in mind for your toddler and friends why not have it at the wading pool. The area is fully fenced, the pool fully covered, spacious ground, picnic table and even ice cream is obtainable at the canteen. An ideal spot for a very happy afternoon of fun and frolic and Jason will give any assistance needed. Now to continue with our “Snippets of History”. The year is 1969 and the Dawson Valley Colliery at Baralaba, owned and operated by Mount Morgan Limited ceased production. Also at Mount Morgan Limited oil firing of the reverberatory furnace commenced in place of coal burning. This year saw the commencement of Meals on Wheels after a meeting had taken place on October 28th at the Council Chambers. The Presbyterian Minister, Rev Eric Spall was made the first Director. This wonderful service has seen many wonderful volunteers over the years and is still doing an excellent job. While the meals are now prepared at the hospital, volunteer delivery drivers are always needed and welcomed. If you would like to help please phone Jean at 49381346. The new amenities block at the Mount Morgan High School was opened this year at a cost of $50,000.

The Boy Scout building in Dee Street was officially opened by the Chief Commissioner of Boy Scouts for the state of Queensland. It was recognised as one of the best set-up buildings in the State. The Mafeking Bell that had for many years been located in the grounds of the Council Chambers was now installed in its own bell tower in front of the new building. The previous Scout centre was down behind the Railway station near the ground that was once the golf links.

Come rain or come shine – the popular children’s playground at the Mount Morgan Dam is now set to be even busier. The area has recently seen the installation of a shade cover, offering the equipment and its users some much needed protection from the elements. A substantial and permanent addition, the cover is a curved custom orb colourbond roof measuring 30 metres by 25 metres. The cover cost approximately $145,000. Chair of Rockhampton Regional Council’s Parks and Recreation Committee Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the installation is a welcome boost to an already popular area. “The Big Dam is becoming a very popular spot, with many outdoor events and family get-togethers attracting more and more people each weekend,” Cr Rutherford said. “The new shade structure will ensure children will be sheltered from light rain and kept cooler during the hot summer so they can use the playground area for longer periods.” Works toward the installation were carried out by Council crews who commenced works just after the September/ October school holidays.

The installation was completed ahead of schedulereopened last Friday afternoon; two weeks earlier than expected. “We originally aimed for its completion in late October,” Cr Rutherford said. “So we’re really pleased the structure is now complete and open for the community to enjoy.” Since its completion, the cover has been receiving high praise from the local community. “I think it’s fantastic,” local resident and mother Donna Anderson said on its first day of reopening last week. “You don’t have to stop now. You used to have to be careful and choose your hours to take your kids, being mindful of the heat. Before the cover you couldn’t really have a BBQ lunch and let the kids play on the playground because it was just too hot.” Along with the benefits of the cover, Donna said the structure itself is also impressive. “I love it. It was unreal when I first saw it. The sheer size of it is fantastic. I was expecting sails but this is beautiful.”

Since opening in May, Debbie Rose Boutique has been receiving rave reviews from both local and visiting customers. The local business’ splendid interior, its array of stylish clothing and its friendly customer service have been just some of the positive feedback given to owners, Debbie and Garry Williams. And it’s feedback that Debbie Rose Boutique customers have been eager to put in writing. The boutique has been nominated for three awards in the 2014 Capricornia Business Awards. Previously known as the Best in the Business Awards, the Capricornia Business Awards showcase some of the top businesses found throughout the region. The business awards have been held by the Morning Bulletin for the past 14 years and annually welcome members of the public to nominate their favourite business in one or more of the award’s 13 categories. This year’s event sees Debbie Rose Boutique nominated for three. It’s exciting news for Debbie and Garry, who opened the boutique just five months ago. “We were thrilled when we were told that we had been nominated,” Debbie said last week. “We got a call from the Morning Bulletin team a couple of weeks ago who let us know what we had been nominated in, and we were just over the moon.” The local business has been nominated for the Customer Service Award, the New Business of the Year Award and the Retail Award. Debbie and Garry will find out the results this Friday evening, when the award’s winners are announced at a special dinner in Rockhampton. “Of course, we would love to bring home an award,” Debbie said. The win is something Debbie sees as a positive - for not only the boutique, but for Mount Morgan as a whole. “It would be that feather in the cap for both the shop and the town,” Debbie said. “It would be really exciting and some positive promotion for all of us,” Garry added.

“If we can promote the town by receiving an award, lift up that image even more and help bring more people up here, then that will be something great for all of us.” Win or otherwise however, Debbie and Garry say the nominations in themselves are something to be proud of. For the pair, excitement lies in the fact that they were nominated by the public. “Being nominated by the public is really good in itself. I guess it brings a comfort that we must be doing something right,” Garry said. “So even without winning an award, it’s definitely a positive.” The nominations cement the accolades the pair have been receiving for the business. And there’s no question as to why it has been so highly praised. The store stocks a wide range of garments; each handpicked by Debbie from a range of suppliers located in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. The garments then hang in the store’s impressive interior; which has been designed and renovated by Garry. It’s a combination that has seen dozens of repeat customers for the pair; many of whom travel from around Central Queensland to see what’s in store. “The word of mouth is getting around,” Garry said. “We are lucky to have a good following from the community and the range of clothing is bringing people in and drawing customers from other towns. At times we get calls from people in different areas and towns to check we are open.”

5

It’s a very positive start for the business, but Debbie and Garry say they aren’t stopping there. They say they have more ideas and plans for the boutique. “We are still working on getting a wider range of clothing, getting new suppliers and also increasing our range in the real ladies sizes,’ Debbie said. “There is also a makeup range on the way.” Debbie said along with the stock, they are also looking to enhance the shopping experience. “We want to make shopping here something that is very comfortable and a lot of fun,” she said. “We are getting the word out about our after-hours appointments. One on one shopping and styling sessions are available and we are also looking into a girl’s night out option – a wine and cheese night kind of thing, which will be a lot of fun.”

Stage two of Sewerage Extension underway

The continued role out of a staged, prioritised extension of the existing Mount Morgan sewer reticulation network is now in Stage Two. Division 5 representative, Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the ultimate goal of the Mount Morgan Sewerage Extension project was to provide reticulated sewerage services to approximately 450 Mount Morgan properties by 2017.

Free engraving of personal items Mount Morgan Police and Neighbourhood Watch are joining together at the local Police Station grounds from 10am - 2pm, Saturday November 1st, to assist with free engraving of personal items. (Appointments made for larger items to be engraved). Free Sausage Sizzle, with drinks available for purchase.

“The project involves expanding the current sewerage network by way of targeting critical properties with inadequate or failing onsite wastewater management systems,” Cr Rutherford said.

Nominations for the 2015 Australia Day Awards are now open

“Stage Two is now underway by Fitzroy River Water and is due to provide connection abilities to approximately 90 properties in the coming years.

Here is your chance to ensure your colleagues, friends or family members are acknowledged for their exceptional community achievements.

“Expanding the current network and providing reticulated sewerage services to a large number of properties will eliminate the need for expensive solutions that would eventually become redundant with the provision of reticulated sewerage,” she said.

Award categories include:

Project facts: • Stage One commenced in May 2014 and targeted approximately 12 properties, • Stage Two commenced in October 2014 and targets approximately 90 properties, • Seven stages in total, • $3,900,000 budgeted for the entire project, • Expected to reach full completion by December 2017, • Will provide reticulated sewerage services to approximately 450 properties. Cr Rutherford outlined that the project involved a significant expansion of the existing gravity reticulation network along with the construction of a number of sewage pumping stations and associated rising mains. Identified residents in Stage Two have been notified of the scope of the project and are aware that upon completion, their property will have the potential to connect. • Citizen of the Year • Young Citizen of the Year • Sportsperson of the Year • Cultural Award • Community Service Award (in which groups can be nominated also) • Community Event/Initiative. Mount Morgan Rodeo Association Inc Report: Hi Mount Morgan and welcome to the second update from the committee. Our Family Fun Day on the 18th of October was a success with many happy children having fun interacting with others and sharing strategies to beat the opposition. The highlight of the day was the tug of war, men versus the kids. Unfortunately for some, not including the crowd, the rope broke…have you ever witnessed a group of men on their backs with legs in the air – think back to the TV ad Louie the fly and you’ve got some idea. I can’t display a photo of the event as I was rolling around on the ground laughing and gasping for air as was everyone else on the day. It was one of those “you had to be there moments”. The kids had the time of their lives with the egg and spoon races, horseshoe throwing, balloon and sack races, eating the apple off the string and many more games they made up themselves. Oh and I mustn’t forget the water balloons. And a big thank you to Ben Lodewikus who bombarded me with an arsenal of balloons full of water.

If you missed the day, you missed a great event full of fun, laughter and community spirit. The smiles on the kids’ faces made every ache, pain and effort we put into organising the day well worth it. A big thank you to Ben, Kev, Ed, Jason and Tash, the committee members and volunteers along with those who participated in the day’s events. Regards. Lyn Campion Secretary MMRAI Pictured above: attendees enjoying a game of tug of war. Photo supplied by Sarah Dalton. Pictured right: Ashtyn Donald eating the apple off the string. News from Mount Morgan RSL The RSL Mix & Mingle Fun Day

This function was held by M.V.A.C. (Mines Victims and Clearance) to raise funds to assist our people going overseas to clear mines. In one school area alone, more than 80 mines were cleared.

A mix of music by “Stock Bros” (pictured right) plus two was excellent. Bruce and Jenny Rogers of “Sounds Good” put on some really great vocals. Well done to both.

There was a very good fashion parade; this was emceed by David Bell. We had a Multi Draw Raffle. This was very capably organised by Cecelia Miller and Glenda Kitchin of the Auxiliary of Capricorn RSL Sub Branch. $1600 was raised – well done.

The RSL Mix & Mingle Fun Day was held on Sunday 19th. For those who didn’t come, you missed a really good day.

Twenty one good prizes went to lucky winners of the Multi-draw Raffle. S & D Robinson both won a great prize each, but D Robinson we think may have gone home – we are holding your prize. Please call Jim on 49381395.

Hi Folks, I would like to introduce a new member of our team at the Mount Morgan Police Station. Hi, My Name is Georgia Page, I am the new Station Client Service Officer at the Mount Morgan Police Station. Most of you will know and recognise me from the Newsagency, as I have worked there for many years now. Many of you probably seeing me grow up from a little girl, to further graduating high school. I attended the Cathedral College, where I decided in year 10, that I would like to be in the Police Service in the future. This is the first stepping stone to meeting that goal. In my spare time I enjoy going to the gym and relaxing as much as possible, since moving out of home wasn’t as easy as first thought I don’t get much relaxation time in between house work and other odd jobs. I didn’t realise how good I had it living at home with my parents, I advise anyone young to stay at home for as long as possible! I am at the station Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Fridays 9am till 3:30pm. I am here to help with any enquires or anything you need help with. I’m still learning so please be patient, I will do my best, I promise. The station contact number is 4938 1222. If I am not here, one of the friendly officers will be able to assist you with your enquiry. We are a pretty awesome group of people, so don’t be afraid to ask us for help. Look forward to seeing you in the station.

Last Term for 2014 Students and teachers are back on deck for the final 10 weeks of the 2014 school year and I wish you all the best for what is shaping up to be a busy final term. Year 12 students will finish on Friday 21 November, Year 10 and 11 Friday 28th November and Year 8 and 9 on Friday 12th December. I’d also like to wish all of our Year 6 and 7 students the best as they enjoy their last term of primary school before making the transition to Junior Secondary.

Argus and community project news: Hi Argus readers, We hope you have been enjoying Issue 21 so far, and for that matter, the 2014 Argus as a whole. We were recently going over some of our past issues this year, and it’s safe to say that we have had some great things to report on over the past ten months. Our last issue for the year is sure to be jam packed when we include our annual “Year that was”. But of course, there are a number of projects to still be carried out before that comes around. Our last large event for the year will be the

2014 Christmas Tree Festival!

Start off the festive season with this event on the 5th and 6th of December. There will also be market stalls, carols and entertainment. The Saturday evening will also include children’s amusements and a visit from Santa! Do you have an entry for this year’s display? We would like to and warmly welcome you to become part of this event and submit a decorated tree to be included in this year’s display. There is no charge to submit a tree and entry is open to all interested. Calling all stall holders! If you are interested in holding a stall at this year’s Christmas Tree Festival, please contact myself on 4938 2312 or email mmpad@bigpond.com

More projects:

Tourist Information and Rail Museum News:

Since the start of the year, we have been operating from the Rail Complex, as the site’s new management. Thanks to the support of Mount Morgan Railway Inc., we are getting our feet under the table and working toward a few projects at the complex. If you haven’t had the chance to stop by the complex yet, or if it’s been a while since you have, why not add it to your to do list. There is a stack of rail memorabilia for the rail enthusiast, plus you can even reminisce on earlier years by taking a walk through the Silver Bullet Rail Motor which is currently on display on the platform.

Work experience placement:

We’ve recently had the privilege of again being a host for Mount Morgan High School’s Work Experience Placement. Through this involvement, we had the pleasure of welcoming local year 10 student, Billy Snarr to our team. Billy spent part of last fortnight with us at the Tourist Information Centre/Rail Museum Complex; carrying out gardening and general maintenance duties. He did a great job and also took up the opportunity to delve into our visitor information and town history side of things, even jumping aboard the TMC Tour bus during his stay. A big thanks Billy for spending the week with us, it was a pleasure!

We also have a few other projects set to see the rest of the year out. Here’s a few to look forward to: • 2015 Mount Morgan calendars – following the great feedback on our 2014 Mount Morgan made calendars, we’ll be bringing you another for 2015. These will feature some of our favourite photos taken throughout the year. • Cuppa with a View – we are looking to hold another event atop the Mount Morgan Range next month, as a way of welcoming visitors to our local area. Our first Cuppa with a View was held a couple of months ago, and although it was a fairly quiet day, was a great introduction to Mount Morgan for a number of visitors. It’s something we hope to do on a regular basis and continue next year. • 2015 Mount Morgan Phone Books – toward the end of the year, we will also be calling for updates and changes to our local phone book. Be sure to watch this space for further details. Sharing is Caring Challenge: It’s getting close to Melbourne Cup Day, and for many, this not only means the big race but also a big luncheon or event out and about. Well, good news – for this month’s Facebook challenge, we have a $40 voucher for Mount Morgan’s fantastic new clothing store, Debbie Rose Boutique up for grabs! It’s a perfect chance to grab something flash for Melbourne Cup! So, what do you have to do to win?? … Pull out the camera, it’s selfie time! …again. Head to our Facebook page for more details - Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Incorporated.

Temporary closure of entranceway to complex:

You may have noticed some changes of late to the road signage relating to the rail complex and also the access to the site from the Touchwood Theatre turn off. This is due to some major works being carried out by Rockhampton Regional Council; with earth works for the future sewerage installation for this side of Mount Morgan. This is expected to continue for the next couple of months. These works do not permit complete drive through along railway parade, however access still remains to the railway museum and return from the Glen Gordon turnoff. After this stage is completed, access will then be reverted to the southern end. Road signage will depict further changes as they occur. We will keep you updated through the Argus.

Well wishes:

We’d like to send well wishes to one of our wonderful team members - the lovely Melray McNarmara. We hope you feel better in no time Melray!

by Trish & Greg Mathers Last issue I wrote about the really cute ‘Rufous Bettong’, so I thought I would continue on the cute and cuddly subject.

This is another reason why we must protect our bushland and our tree hollows, so these beautiful creatures have a home to live in.

Sugar Gliders (my favourite animal) are nocturnal, as are most of our native animals.

Bushfires often are the bane of the animals that live in the tree hollows, as once a fire gets into the hollow it ‘stovepipes’, and the smoke very often overcomes the little animals before they have a chance to escape. Fires are sadly often lit deliberately with devastating consequences for our beautiful native animals.

They are midway in size between the tiny Feathertail Glider and the Greater Glider. Head and body is around 170cm and tail around 190cm. Between the little finger on the hand and the first toe on the foot is a thin membrane which enables it to glide for up to 50metres (a long stretch for such a little fella). They thrust from their hind legs and spread out their ‘wings’ so to speak and steer using the membranes and the tail. When around 3metres from the target tree they will bring their hind legs forward, swoop up, and land with all fours onto the tree.

We have had lots of starving birds coming into care the last couple of weeks, mostly lorikeets. If you feed them, please make sure you give them proper lorikeet mix, not bread or seed. They are nectar eaters, and the wrong diet will likely kill them. They cannot eat honey, as it can also be fatal to them.

The Sugar Glider is common when tree hollows and food are abundant. They will nest in family groups in a leaflined tree hollow, and their diet consists of nectar, insects and sap from bloodwood trees. Occasionally you will see in the bush a tree with lots of v-shaped nicks. These are made by the resident gliders on their favourite sapfilled tree. Gliders will also eat the green seeds of golden wattle, and occasionally native fruits. The Sugar Glider is mostly grey with a white belly. It has a black stripe running from the nose all the way down the back, and also running down the middle of the back legs and from the neck to the forearm. They also have a magnificently fluffy tail which is grey for about 2/3 of the way down then changes to black.

For those who remember ‘Woollie Jumper’, the last little joey we raised, she is due to be released within the next month, and rumour has it that she is going to be a ‘mum’. The gestation period of the Blackstripe is around 33 days, so we will hopefully find out before she is released!

Fridays at the Welfare Bowls Club Names in by 6pm for a 6.30pm start

Gliders when they are hand-raised must have a very high protein diet. I have raised them from as small as 3 grams, (a teaspoon holds 5 grams). Mind you at that small they are on 2 hourly feeds around the clock. Very tiring – but worth it. While in care they are the most adorable little animals. Their technical name ‘Petaurus breviceps’ means shortheaded rope-dancer, and they certainly live up to this name with their antics. They will scurry around the house, swinging upside down off the curtain rails, leaping onto the ceiling fans (which must be off obviously), and they love to hunt moths and spiders. They are also brilliant at hiding, especially when it is time for them to go back into the aviary. The one we have in care at present (Honey) can usually be found in the back of Greg’s guitar amp cuddled up asleep, or under the sheets in the bed.

Great prizes & raffles Friendly atmosphere. All welcome For further details, phone 49381131. You can also find us on Facebook “Mount Morgan Welfare Bowls Club” 28 Thompson Ave.Mount Morgan

Mountain Mick’s Blessing of the Harvest Veggie Stew

With the recent passing of Val Edwards (Price) Mount Morgan lost one very respected and popular citizen. After leaving the Mount Morgan High School Val worked at the General Office of Mount Morgan Limited for a number of years. Val then married Pat Edwards (Ex A.I.F.) and had two sons, Dale and Glen. Sadly Pat died at a very early age and Val returned to work accepting a position at the Mount Morgan Hospital where she trained as a dental nurse. Val was most suited for this position with her caring nature and her delightful hearty laugh it took most of the pain away.

I was recently asked if I eat anything but meat, and if so, could I do some Vegetarian recipes. I have done a few over the years that I’ve been writing for the Argus, but I thought I would go with another - a very nice all Vegetarian Stew, which everyone will love on a cool evening with some fresh homemade crusty bread. I’ve made this one and I have to say, I think I have got a great tasty all veggie dish that will become a family favourite. Also, as a Diabetic I will be eating more meals like this one. So whether it be health/lifestyle or religious reasons that you have gone veggie, you don’t have to abandon taste. Enjoy with a green ice tea or even a lovely rose-hip tea.

Val was a very cheerful person and on many occasions her humorous and applicable quotations always brightened the room. She will be remembered by many residents as a very happy, kind, generous and sincere loving friend with a wonderful laugh.

• ¼ cup of oil (olive or grape seed) • 2 red onions - roughly chopped • 1 cup chopped pumpkin • 1 leek - roughly chopped • 1 med sweet potato - roughly chopped • 1 red capsicum – chopped • 2 med carrots - roughly chopped • 2 cup cauliflower rosettes • 2 large tomatoes – chopped • 1 cup chopped beans (green) • ¼ cup sliced ginger • 2 cloves garlic – crushed • 2 teaspoon sweet paprika • ¼ teaspoon black pepper • 2 tablespoon light soy sauce ( make sure it’s 100% vegetarian) • ¼ teaspoon sage • ½ teaspoon salt • pinch of chilli powder • 1 litre water or veggie stock Optional 1 aubergine – (aka eggplant, and also known as melongene) chopped in 2 cm cubes and add in after 15 minutes, or it will fall apart. And is optional - if you don’t like it, simply leave it out… but it is very nice, we love it. Another thing to do with the Aubergine is to fry it in oil and garlic with some salt to taste and use it as a topping.

Enjoy your rest Val.

Ingredients

How I do it:

Simply fry ginger and red onions for a minute or two. Now just add everything into the pot - add water/stock and bring to the boil. Then turn to a simmer for about 35 minutes - don’t stir too much as we want the veggies to keep their shape. You can thicken with a cornflour/water paste a little but you don’t want it thick and dodgy. Serve once the hardest veggie is soft to the tooth. Serve with steamed rice or pasta or crusty bread. Please enjoy the blessing of the harvest with this veggie stew. Mick
