History & Reflections
Pride in your Town This edition we are doing a little revision of just two items that were very much part of the town’s history and may not be too familiar to many. The items have been taken from the words by Frank Golding on his presentation speech in Brisbane on behalf of the Mount Morgan Historical Society on May 25 in 1978.
“Heung Lew” Shrine In 1890 the Chinese community (and it was fairly large at that time) erected in the local cemetery a Chinese Shrine known as a “Heung Lew”. It is still in good condition and is believed to be the only one of its kind in Queensland. It has been classified by the National Trust. It is made of concrete, about 8 feet high and comprises a 4-feet square base culminating in a 3 feet truncated pyramid on which small two-tier ornamentation is surmounted. The internal cavity is brick lined to serve as a furnace for the burning of religious papers. Four vents have been inserted in the pyramid and one large one at the base. Prayer papers and cash papers were offered up in the shrine at funerals and days of religious observance. Offerings of roast duck, fowls and pigs were offered up at the “Heung Lew” for departed spirits much in the manner westerners put flowers on a grave of a dear one. The Chinese belief being that the spirits accepted these food offerings in essence.
Funeral Notice Posts. Years ago on the corners of some streets in town were white-painted Notice Posts which stood about three feet out of the ground. On these secured posts attached with tacks, were funeral notices that had been printed at one of the local printing works in town under instruction from undertakers. The posts over the years became studded with tacks; so much so that one wondered how many more notices could be secured without tacks being taken out to make room for them. Inquiries from some of the older visitors during the “Back to Mount Morgan Week” in 1970, it was Just a smile or two. disclosed that a local legend states that it is unlucky to remove tacks from the As we grow older, and hopefully wiser, we posts. Shellite Iron
Graeme Meade from Collectables & Memories East Street
I have not been able to date this iron, probably 1930s, but could have been made from the 1920s until the 1950s. I found one made by the “Imperial Brass Manufacturing Company” in Chicago, in the 1920s, the only thing different was the handle. This iron is marked “The Imperial Petrol Iron”, so it is probably not made in Australia. Self-heating shellite powered clothing irons are what they were called, this one weighs about 2.5 kilos. The iron has a reservoir which is filled with shellite, a valve, on the back, regulates the amount of shellite that fuels the flame inside the iron. This would regulate the heat of the iron. The top opens, it would have been lit from there. This iron does not use pressure to make it work, the next generation of irons did. Before the inception of shellite irons they were heated on the stove top or used charcoal and used until they became too cool to press the fabric. All I can say about these irons, is that there must have been lots of people late for work in the old days. You wake up late, go to iron a shirt, irons out of shellite, you go out to the garage to get the petrol can to fill it up, lucky you if there is shellite in the can, fill the iron up, then wait for it to heat up. It’s so much easier to plug something in and flick a switch.

5. Captain Kindness visits Kindy Care
Dee River Oldies
On the 9th of September Kindy Care had a visit from Captain Kindness and Kindness Girl from the Random Act of Kindness. Captain Kindness and Kindness Girl spoke to the children about the importance of being kind to each other.
August was a very busy month for us, we attended Morning Melodies in Rockhampton on 22nd, The Pensioners’ Morning Tea on 29th and our Damper at the Dam on 31st.
The babies room had been doing super hero’s, so having them visit was fantastic. We decided to incorporate our super hero party in with our visit from Captain Kindness and Kindness girl. All the children and Educators dressed in super hero’s costumes. Kindy Care children appreciated Captain Kindness and Kindness girl taking the time out to visit them. The children were all excited to meet real life superheroes and have them come to their centre just to see them. It was a wonderful experiefor everyone. Thank you Captain Kindess and Kindness Girl for visiting us at Kindy Care.
Then we joined everyone with a stall at The Wattle Day held at the Railway Complex on September 3rd. The winners of the two breakfast trays, which were donated by Dawn McClelland and Veronica Clancy, were, Val Young and Val Schinkel. On behalf of our members, Carolyn presented the QAS with a $100 donation towards their fundraising efforts. Twenty-five members attended our usual Morning Tea held in the Anglican Church hall, on Wednesday, September 28th. Everyone tested themselves with a few games of Trivia. The results were very close, the table with Dawn, Lenore, Agnes, Lavina and Doug winning by only half a point. Betty Inslay won the Breakfast Tray, and The Lucky Door winners were Agnes Hoehne, Rosemary Izzard and Esther Popovich. Our last Morning Tea for the year will be held on Wednesday October26th. Our next meeting will be on
Tuesday October 18th Our next street stall will be on Thursday October 20th.

MOUNT MORGAN MULTI PURPOSE HEALTH SERVICE Immunisation News: Immunisations are held on the first and third Tuesdays each month by appointment only (ph 4912 5100). The National Shingles Vaccination program begins in November 2016. This is a single immunisation available to people aged 71-79 years until 2021. Please note that if you have had shingles, you must wait 12 months before having the immunisation. CAN News: The MMMPHS CAN (Community Advisory Network) would like to thank the local community organisations and individuals who have recently taken the time to complete the questionnaire that was distributed to gauge the health care needs and expectations of our community. Thankyou to those people who have indicated their interest in becoming CAN members. It is anticipated that elections for membership on the CAN will be finalised before the end of this year. More details on this will be provided when available. If you would like to participate in the questionnaire and haven’t received one please contact Jayne at the office to have one sent to you. Medical Services: The MMMPHS has received approval for a 2 doctor model in June and the health service is in the process of a very targeted recruitment drive to permanently fill positions throughout the CQ Hospital and Health Service. Previous recruitment rounds during 2014 and 2015 have not been successful. I would like to thank the 2 long term locums Dr Philip Jolly and Dr Ron Cassano for providing excellent medical service for the community of Mt Morgan. Dr Jolly has recently ceased coming due to personal reasons and Dr Ron Cassano will continue to come until December 4. They both have provided a stable medical service for over 12mths which has been very much appreciated. We have recently had 2 short periods of no medical cover due reasons outside of our control when booked medical locums cancelled due to illness. When this occurs we look for all over Australia for a doctor with the suitable qualifications and skills to work in this very senior dynamic medical role. At times we cannot find any replacements. Safe clinical care continues with collaboration between Queensland Ambulance Service, ourselves, Rockhampton Hospital Emergency and local GPs. I appreciate the community’s support and understanding at these times.

The Orange Dot Movie Review
By Larry at Fox Video
Time-travel movies always mess with We have had a few your head, but when complaints from locals they’re done well it is a recently that all of the fascinating genre. birds that usually come into their yard have Scripted by Stephen disappeared, and they King, produced by JJ are worried. We did Abrams’ ‘Bad Robot’, investigate one yard co-directed by and starring James Franco, you can be assured and believe we found that 11.22.63 is in the best of hands and is very well done. the culprit. - Noisy Miners. There are times in our history when we feel that humanity, society, the world as we know it was robbed...That combined Noisy Miners are a native bird (not to be confused with the sense of loss and injustice stays with us as we are swept Indian Mynah, which is introduced). Many people confuse inexorably into the future, and we look back with sadness. the two. Noisy Miners are greyish brown; Indian Mynahs are black. Such a time it was when we lost Jack and Bobby and Dr King. The Noisy Miner is the guard dog of the trees. They will scream alarmingly when any intruders, such as cats or snakes are around. In breeding season, they consider all other birds as intruders and will full on attack them and chase them off! They are delightful little birds, very intelligent and cunning! Currawongs migrate this time of year too, so that accounts for them disappearing. One of our local vets can tell you exactly what date they leave and return each year. He says it is always on that exact date they go! The majority of birds are nesting at the moment, so at least half will be sitting on nests we would imagine. Birds will move to find water sources and food sources. Unless you see a lot of bodies in one area there is really no need to worry. The little bird in the photo is a Striated Pardalote. They are spectacular little birds, having a grey back, light brown rump, yellow and white brow, black wings with white stripes and a red dot., mustard yellow chest with white surrounding it. Their call is a ‘witta-witta’. They are insect eaters and nest in holes in the ground.
Even in our tiny western Queensland town I remember standing in our little tin kitchen, my mum in tears as she told us that Jack had been killed. What if you had the chance to go back and right that wrong... Fix it... Would you do it? 11.22.63 dives into the unpredictable darkness of the American Dream. Jake Epping (Franco) is a high school teacher searching for more meaning in his life. His ailing friend (Chris Cooper) has a secret. He has stumbled upon a portal through time which takes him back to 1960 in Texas, and he has made it his cause to prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. He has tried and fallen short many times for a multitude of complicated reasons and now his health is failing him; so Cooper tries to convince Jake to take over his mission. As Jake explores the mysteries surrounding alleged assassin Lee Harvey Oswald, his goal is threatened not only by Oswald, but also by a beautiful librarian who steals Jake’s heart...and by The Past itself, which does not want to be changed and pushes back, violently. This intriguing eight-part thriller offers a mind-bending, emotional thrill-ride unlike any other.

Also featuring a strong performance from Josh Duhamel, 11.22.63 is rated MA15+ for “strong themes, violence and coarse language”. 11.22.63 is an intense, exhilarating exploration of what can happen when the future fights back. Loved it.
Green Thumb By Murray Hare
It’s that wonderful time of year that everyone seems to love. The deafening SCREECH of the lorikeets drinking nectar in the native trees, The distinct sound of the crickets chirping in the heat of the day, The fact there are no settings on your fans to cope with the humidity. Yes. The rumours are true. It’s that mythical time of year called Spring (apparantly Summer isnt really 3 of the 4 seasons). Right now, there are massive amounts of trees starting to bloom. One you will see around quite a lot is the Callistemon or Bottlebrush. They actually get their name from their flowers likeness to the bottle brushes used in the sink (dont get the two confused though Bottlebrush, not brush bottle) Callistemons come in varying shades of Pink, Red, White, Orange and Mauve. They flower enmass, coating the entire bush in colour for a few days. The lorikeets and native birds love them. They are a good way to attract some native insects and birds to your yard. Might need some earplugs. Callistemons should suffer from an identity crisis. Their names have been changed multiple times. Callistemons are from the Myrtacea family and have been known as Melaleucas, Callistemons, Metrosideris, back to Callistemon, Melalecua again and back to Callistemon. They just can’t make up their mind which is the best classification for our native beauty. Callistemons are quite hardy and are the perfect addition to your garden if you have the room to spare. Most of the varieites will grow quite tall but there are a few shrubbier varieties you could try. As there are a lot of different varieties, it will be a little hard for me to name them all in my column. If you are interested just ask me when you see me around town. We are quite lucky in this dry and arid country called Australia. Our native flora and fauna really are a beautiful sight to see.

In Mick’s Memory Submitted by Karin Blake
This is a recipe that Mick and I used quite regularly and still do. The kids love it and so will you. Marinated Chicken Wings Ingredients 1 tablespoon oyster sauce 2 teaspoons cumin 1 tablespoon Chinese five spice ½ teaspoon Coriander 3 tablespoons paprika 2 teaspoons ginger 3 cloves crushed garlic ½ cup Hoisin sauce ½ cup soya sauce ½ cup sweet chilli sauce 200gm char siu sauce ¼ cup of lemon juice 2 kg of de-jointed chicken wings. Firstly, you mix all the ingredients together in a bowl. You then place your de-jointed chicken wings into this mixture. The easiest way is to use your fingers to mix it through the wings. Making sure to cover all of them. Once you have done this you then cover the bowl with gladwrap and leave in the fridge to sit for about an hour. You then take out the chicken pieces and place them on a tray and put into a pre heated over at 180 degrees and cook for about 20-30 minutes. Depending on the size of the wings. Once ready you take out and serve.

Happening’s at the Historical Railway Complex. September School Holidays have been rather busy for the volunteers at the Historical Railway Complex. On Wednesday the 21st the children from the Red Frog Early Learning Centre Mulligrubs School’s out program enjoyed a tour of the museum and 3D Movie Presentation, the settlers camp and especially the ‘Silver Bullet’ Rail motor. Colouring in on the platform proved to be popular, with everyone taking home their silver bullet and steam train masterpieces.
Tuesday the 27th September saw the Mount Morgan Railway Museum and Platform filled to the brim with youngsters from the Rockhampton Grammar School Vacation Care Program eager to learn the history of the Rack Rail and how “things were in the olden days”. Helen Kuhnel said “the school holiday program which ran from the 19th September to the 4th October included activities such as Laser Tag and bowling, Junabel Miniatures, Pump Sport, African drumming, a trip to the causeway, cinema and the Railway Complex followed by lunch at the Mount Morgan Dam.”
Tuesday was also a sad day when MMPAD executive and Railway volunteers said farewell to Val Ritchie with a morning tea and small gift. Val has been a valued volunteer at the Railway Complex for over eight years however Val and her husband have decided to retire back in South Africa. We wish Val the very best and a happy retirement.
Friday the 30th Ross Laing from Miles accompanied by his Granny Theresa from Scotland visited the Railway Complex. Ross was on a quest to gather information for his Grade 4 school project which was to report on a recent road trip. Theresa said “Ross is just fascinated with the trains and machinery”.

The family of the late Colin Turner wish to thank family & friends who attended their Dad’s Funeral Service, sent cards, flowers & messages of sympathy at the time of his passing. A BIG Thank You to Mount Morgan QAS, all hospital staff, especially Dr Ron Cassano for the care and dedication given to their dad. A True Gentleman!
