VENU / TG Couture Awards Three Student Designers As longtime supporters of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, as well as the local design community, Gary Lee and Thomas McWalters of TG Couture, together launched a scholarship program to assist students in fulfilling their design dreams. To choose the recipients of the $1,000 scholarship, TG Couture partnered with the Art Institutes’ fashion department. Members of the TG Couture team reviewed students’ work and selected seven of their favorite designs which were then featured in the new VENU/ TG Couture showroom at The Merchandise Mart, where they were on display during NeoCon®. “As we prepared for the grand opening of our new flagship showroom, we felt that incorporating a showcase of students’ fashion designs would be a great compliment to the work that would be displayed in our space. We are excited to have had the ability to partner with a wonderful program and support the next generation of young people who are passionate about design,” Thomas McWalters, co-designer of TG Couture and managing principal of Gary Lee Partners. During the June 5 TG Couture launch party attendees were asked to vote on their favorite design. About 150 attendees and the final three winners were determined. Congratulations to Rachel Franck, Mariko Golden and Alice Schoenau on their award winning designs!
CALVIN ASHFORD JR. Nationally Recognized Interior Designer Calvin Ashford Jr., Principal and Design Director of Gilmore-Ashford-Powers, died Tuesday, June 24, peacefully in his home, after a valiant fight with cancer, with brother Nickolas Ashford and sister-in-law Valerie Simpson at his bedside. Born in Ypsilanti, Michigan, Mr. Ashford received a fine arts degree from Columbia University, New York, a master’s degree in microbiology from the University of Michigan, and his PhD in microbiology from the University of Illinois. When the wife of one of his professors needed assistance with her home, the professor mentioned that he had a student interested in interior design and recommended Cal Ashford. The job convinced Mr. Ashford that interior design was his first love, and he was off and running to a long and successful career. Mr. Ashford achieved fame for his interior design work, notably in private residences in Chicago, New York, Palm Springs and other cities throughout the United States, Canada and Great Britain. His work has been showcased on television as well as recognized in top international interior design publications (Architectural Digest, London Designs and Interiors, House and Garden, Better Homes & Gardens and the Chicago Tribune). Noted his brother, Nickolas Ashford, of the Grammy-award winning singer/composer duo Ashford and Simpson, “He was so talented, and the best brother – he could always lift my mind to new heights … his celebrity clients include Dr. Maya Angelou, Sammy Sosa, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick and Whitney Houston.” Bill Heaton, of The Betty M Collection commented, “Having worked with him for twenty-five years, we can say that Cal Ashford was, without a doubt, one of the most talented designers around, generous with his friendship and his patronage. He will be missed throughout The Merchandise Mart.” Business partner Keith P. Moore said, “I owe much to Cal Ashford. He was a great man. His strength, patience and willingness to share the breadth of his knowledge are a testament to his exceptional character.”
