casual showrooms prepare for spring Outdoor living design is one of the fastest growing opportunities for design professionals as consumers are extending their homes’ interior design to the exterior. While it may be bitter cold outside, now is the time to start working with clients on outdoor design projects to place orders in time for the spring.

asId desIgn summIt 008 on thursday, february 8 the asId Illinois chapter presented a day of career building, networking, education to enhance professional skills and discovery of new designer resources. hundreds of trade professionals and students attended morning and afternoon keynote seminars while visiting numerous resource exhibitors at the expo trade show. overall the event was a great success with many already looking forward to next year!

samuel & sons showroom opening soon Samuel & Sons will open its own showroom showcasing their passementerie in early 2008. They have chosen The Merchandise Mart to be their first company showroom outside of their own building located in New York City.

Known for their tassels, trimmings, braids, gimp and fringes, this family owned business is going to be a welcome new addition to the 6th floor. M&J is one facet of the business that began three quarters of a century ago as M&J Trimmings, based in New York’s Garment District. Samuel & Sons Trimmings has long supplied fashion designers, costume makers and interior designers with every variety of decorative trimming.

The contacts and sources offered by Samuel Cohen and his sons, Michael and Hy, are international in scope with imports from more than 20 different countries. Many designs are archival with some being adapted from antique fragments and original decorative documents. Others reflect the newest trends in color, texture and design.

Brunschwig & Fils introduces Houlès Houlès USA Inc. has re-located from Suite 6-168 into the Brunschwig & Fils showroom. Houlès specializes in the creation of trimmings, tassels and tiebacks. This French company of international recognition is a family run business, founded in 1928 by Felix HOULES. The company is now managed with great passion and enthusiasm by the president, his great grandson Philippe HOULES. Also at Brunschwig & Fils, new furniture collections designed by Seth Stevens are debuting in the showroom this month. Stop in Suite 6-121 to see and test Mr. and Mrs. Wing chairs with their matching ottoman, along with the Olympia collection, including an 80” arm sofa, occasional chairs and a large oval ottoman. These collections represent a new beginning for Brunschwig & Fils. michael taylor introduces christoher hyland Michael Taylor Designs, Suite 1868A, welcomes the luxurious Christopher Hyland line, a unique collection of the finest classic-to-contemporary style textiles and trimmings including a large selection of solid fabrics all colored to complement the vast offering of jacquard, woven and printed fabrics. In addition, the Michael Taylor Designs Showroom will carry the new Christopher Hyland collection of European printed textiles, a color-rich assortment of modern and traditional designs printed on an array of ground textiles.

designing for the nation: john fowler and English country house style Tuesday, March 4 | 10 a.m.

Presented by: Martin Wood, Designer and Author Merchandise Mart Conference Center, 2nd floor During the course of his career, interior decorator John Fowler was responsible for transforming some of Britain’s important historic interiors, including more than 20 National Trust Properties such as Sudbury Hall, as well as private residences such as Chequers and Buckingham Palace. In 1938 he founded Colefax and Fowler with designer Lady Sibyl Colefax. Fowler sought to create visually successful rooms, rather than to replicate earlier interiors, but his guiding philosophy was always to “do right by the house.” Although he was aware of historically accurate decoration, and indeed can be considered a pioneer in the early field of preservation, Fowler often altered the colors or added non-historic details to make a visually coherent composition for the visitor. The English Country House style was largely created and promulgated by John Fowler and his later partner Nancy Lancaster. Using research from his recently published monograph on John Fowler, author Martin Wood will sketch Fowler’s career from his early work to the last major country house he decorated, showing the development of his style and taste.

Martin Wood is a textile and garden designer and interior decorator. He has led exclusive travel programs to Nancy Lancaster’s English properties for The Institute of Classical Architecture. He has written extensively on garden design and is co-author of Gertrude Jekyll at Munstead Wood and Nancy Lancaster: English Country House Style. Just published by Frances Lincoln is his latest book, John Fowler: Prince of Decorators.

companies and consumers have a decision to make: green design vs. luxury desire In 2006, an increase in global competition pushed companies to focus on making their products both innovative and high-quality in an effort to compete for consumers and survive in the international market. In turn, consumers recognized this development and shifted their focus to buying products of high-quality design and prominent brand. This new desire for luxury was evident throughout all industries from automotive, to mobile phones to furniture.

Today, at the beginning of 2008, there is a new focus for companies and consumers alike: Green Design. Within one year’s time, global market headlines have seemingly taken a turn in an opposite direction, broadcasting the urgency for all industries to focus on producing products, luxury or not, to be green, sustainable and environmentally friendly. Headlines have sent a similar message to the consumer market, expressing the importance for all to shop, purchase, live, think and, essentially, be green.

The universal insistence upon converting one’s way of life and business to green is presented largely as an ultimatum in some regards. Most companies who have successfully established their product or brand throughout the international market share common advantages of leading technology and high-quality design. Should they now push aside their already achieved global status and luxury desire to satisfy this sudden method for saving the planet? Likewise, most consumers go after what they want simply because something is the way they want it and they won’t settle for less. Should mankind unite and oppose all objects of desire because the company does not bear the green certification or organic seal of approval?

Design has become an essential economic factor, judged and defined by each individuals own feelings and attitude towards life. Therefore, companies who pride themselves in high-tech, innovative design and products should not jump ship or bend the frame because they are not FCC certified or labeled organic.

Nor should consumers feel they are moral heathens or plant wreckers for not buying green over luxury. Perhaps for the first time, companies and consumers are on the same team. Each party has to ask themselves the following question: Is this right for me? Companies should venture further asking, Is going Green possible? And, if not 100 percent green, perhaps 15 percent or 20 percent to start? Also, will the integrity of my brand or product differ if attempting to produce in an environmentally-friendly way? If so, how much and is it worth it on the whole? Perhaps diving headfirst to appeal to the green trend does not work for all companies, but seeing them take steps in the direction of environmentally friendly design speaks to the big picture and demonstrates consideration for Mother Earth and global concern.

Consumers must ask themselves, Is this right for me? Then take it further to question, Is this green or luxury item worth the price tag? Does it meet my needs and satisfy desires? How important is a brand’s green certification when it comes to purchase decisions for this vs. that? If it has to be green, does that mean giving up a favorite brand not taking steps towards environmentally friendly design? At the end of the day, all of us, company founders and consumers, should aim to demonstrate concern for the planet, ensuring it’s sustainable for our children and their children too. The decision to design, distribute, purchase, own and operate in an environmentally-friendly way is a decision the individual must make for themselves.
