Honorary Chair Maria Pinto invites you to experience DIFFA’s DINING BY DESIGN, scheduled November 5-7, 2009 at The Merchandise Mart. 3. Three Friends Studio Asian Antiques & Furniture, Suite 1532 This 18th-century painted coffer is a rare piece in the collection. Its light and elegant appearance is due to the unusual trapezoid shape. The black lacquer finish has a wonderful patina and the frontal surface is decorated with organized groupings of auspicious symbols, birds and flowers. The doors are painted with still life studies of flowers, fruits and antique objects. The pastel colors seem to have luminous qualities. It is believed that this type of painted furniture was specially made in the Ryukyu Islands for a rich, Chinese merchant for sale in the luxury market in Beijing. The painstaking and controlled execution in the painting reflects Japanese influence; the subject matter is clearly Chinese. The native craftsmen often were Koreans. Their technique displayed both cultures but had a unique quality all their own.
