MAYA ROMANOFF UPDATES LOGO Suite 6-167 The January 15 launch date marks the oneyear anniversary of the passing of founder, namesake, and creative force, Maya Romanoff.

Joyce Romanoff, Maya’s wife and the company’s president, was intent to meet this significant anniversary with momentum and a thoughtful evaluation of Maya’s history and the company’s future.

HOMECREST OUTDOOR LIVING UNVEILS WEB SITE UPDATES AND INTERACTIVE DESIGN CENTER Suite 1518 Homecrest Outdoor Living launched a new website update for 2015 (www. homecrest.com) that allows users to easily navigate the site and gather useful information, design, advise and the ability to personalize their outdoor space using both the Interactive Design Center for both seating and fire tables and the easy-touse Patio Planner powered by Homecrest. In enhancing the website for 2015 traffic, Homecrest used a variety of search engine optimization techniques to help generate increased traffic to the site and to its retailer network. Several Social Networking applications were created and added to the website, such as Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter, to educate the dealers and consumers of Homecrest products.

“sophisticated, natural earthiness” that “translates easily to fashion, beauty, industrial design, home furnishings and interiors.” Since the announcement, darker, more saturated colors are all the rage.

So what is behind the trend?

“It’s not just a color, it’s the depth of color,” Balsam said. “It’s more that designers and clients are embracing getting away from ‘neutral land’ and bringing in more color and coziness. Have a little more fun. Take a few more risks. Marsala, they were saying, represents food, wine, entertaining and enjoying life.

I think it is symbolic of that.”

Designers believe there’s a larger reason for the trend other than simply being bored with neutral colors: the improving economy.

“In bad times, people pick neutrals because they’re afraid of investing in something that’s not going to be lasting so everybody picks beige, oatmeal, tan or pale gray because they’re safe,” Stringer said. “Then, as we come out of bad economic times and we’re feeling flush again, we’re like ‘Hey, I want to bust out. I’m tired of wearing gray pants and white shirts. I want to go for some color.”

cited about the current movement in color because it opens up more possibilities than what has generally been acceptable in previous years.

“I think the design community is thinking, ‘Let’s not play it safe anymore. Let’s go back to color,’” Balsam said. “Everything’s starting to look so duplicitous, and the economy is doing better, clients are feeling better, and they really felt that it was a time to embrace the energy that color brings to a space.

Is it a little bit ‘riskier’? I guess it appears that way, in particular when it’s paint, but it is just paint.

“I would really encourage people to try more color and bring more color into their homes in larger doses when possible. Just enjoy it.”

ong before Pantone announced its Color of the Year for 2015, multiple designers participating in the 2014 DreamHome design at Merchandise Mart were coincidentally moved to use similar deep, rich colors for cozier spaces.

Tom Stringer with Tom Stringer Design Partners used Benjamin Moore’s Dark Walnut on the living room, while Jeannie Balsam with Jeannie Balsam LLC used a Candy Apple Red on the foyer. Jessica Lagrange with Jessica Lagrange Interiors used a deep, dark blue for the study.

“Everybody seemed to be channeling these saturated tones, and I think we started doing it to be unusual and original, but we all seemed to be on the same wavelength,” Stringer said. “What I said to my designers when I was conceptualizing it was I wanted to create a space that was overtly decorative, that harkened back to the highly decorative spaces of a different era. I’ve gotten really bored with a modern obsession with neutrality.”

Then in December 2014, Pantone declared Marsala to be the color for the new year due to its

O

utdoor spaces are booming right now. It seems everyone has or wants a porch, deck or patio. The interesting thing is how similar today’s outdoor spaces look to our indoor spaces. Outdoor furniture and fabrics are more creative and versatile than ever before. These days, porches often have everything a living room has: rugs, lamps, coffee tables, throw pillows, even accessories like mirrors and more.

We’re also seeing more innovative choices in outdoor lighting. In the bright sun of the great outdoors, strong colors are popular and fun. That’s because hot hues stand up well to the intense light of the outdoors.

Outdoor kitchens rival their indoor counterparts with plenty of counter space, storage space, fun bars, grills and more.

On the coast, outdoor spaces have heightened significance because people really want to embrace nature.

They are happy to blur the lines between inside and out.

And these days, they can!

CANNON FRANK OFFERS OUT-OF-THE-BOX PREDICTIONS ABOUT THE FUTURE OF OUTDOOR LIVING AND DESIGN

N

othing should stand between you and your love of being outdoors, not even the walls of your home.

As consumers place a higher priority on outdoor living spaces, we seem to be edging closer to

round-the-clock living on the outside, even for areas without ideal climates. In fact, with manufacturers making furnishings more durable and adaptable than ever, outside is truly beginning to feel more like home.

While the origins of outdoor living relied on a pool and a barbecue as an excuse to gather

OUTDOORS outside, its evolution into a true extension of the home began with the idea of adding a kitchen, a couch, a living room complete with fireplace and big screen television. And it’s not likely to stop there. In fact, outdoor living is poised to become an even bigger part of the home as we find more excuses to stay outdoors.

On the horizon will very likely be options for adding full bathrooms and bedrooms to your already functional outdoor lifestyle, according to John Cannon, principal, Cannon Frank A Design Corporation PC, who designs high-end living spaces, indoor and out.

“We have done so many out-

door kitchens with bars, grills, large-screen televisions and outdoor fireplaces. The next thing I would love to see is outdoor sleeping,” Cannon said. “We’ve done outdoor showers, so why not outdoor bathrooms as well?

We are headed to full outdoor living without the camping.”

Cannon, who calls the many

years spent on his family’s screened porch in Michigan some of the happiest times of his life, says that products have helped redefine what is possible outdoors, and as designers look to extend outdoor living, the products will continue to progress.

“I think we’re very close to full-blown living outdoors,” CanSPRING 2015

non said. “We have so many outdoor materials and fabrics, ceiling fans and heaters. You can even get whole sound systems that work outdoors — even underwater speakers. We have the climate control with heaters and fans. It’s just a matter of someone taking the last step and creating outdoor sleeping. We’re that close.”

Cannon and his business partner Cary Frank have already begun presenting outdoor sleeping options to clients, but they said they would love to see a manufacturer offer mattress options suitable for outdoors. Something that would not mildew and that is truly representative of the mattress in your bedroom.

“An outdoor bed would really knock consumers off their feet,” Cannon said. “If you had an outdoor bed complete with dust ruffle and headboard that was impervious to weather, complete with covers — all things that could be watered and cleaned. That would bring this to a whole new level.”

Until then, Cannon and Frank will continue to make outdoor living and entertaining an essential part of your home. As the 2015 DreamHome outdoor room designers, they offer their expertise on what life on the outside will look like in the coming years.

BLURRED LINES The outdoor space around your home should feel like an extension of your home, which means it should be designed accordingly.

“I would suggest that if you agree to do an outdoor space, follow the interior of your home.

I love a contemporary feel, and my outdoor space would look contemporary,” Cannon said. “It should look something like your house. You have to follow your tradition of your home. If you have French country indoors, you can easily extend that out10

doors. In fact, we just did a Louis XIV outdoor area complete with chandeliers, sconces and fabric curtains. Nothing is off limits.”

COLOR CODING Even though you want your outdoor area to be an extension or interpretation of your indoor design, you don’t have to stay with the same color scheme, according to Frank.

“Outdoors could be neutral or bright colors. If your design is contemporary, your outdoor area could be all white,” Frank said.

“There is no reason it can’t be. We have done outdoor sheers that have been up for two years. Just dry clean them in the fall, and they’re good to go. Or, you could gear color toward a festive color palate to go with the pool. If you chose neutral inside, you may want to express color outside.”

You can definitely be more daring outside. “Don’t make it a riot of color. Keep in mind that you’ll be sitting inside looking at outside, so it has to work, but it can be almost a fantasy version of what you have inside,” Frank said.

“In my early days, a lot of clients did summer/winter looks for their homes,” added Cannon.

“If that’s not trend inside, you can do that outside and make it more incredible.”

MADE IN THE SHADE Being able to add shade outside has opened up options for outdoor living where, before, there were none.

“We have done so much with Tucci umbrellas, draw shades, pergolas and gazebos,” Cannon said. “We can permanently install these 10’ x 14’ cantilevered umbrellas and they give you so many incredible options for shade, even in a massive area. I don’t like to get so much sun, but I do love being outdoors, so it has to have some shade.”

TAKE COVER Fabrics have come a long way and are perhaps the products to thank the most for the leap from outdoor entertaining to outdoor living. There are even options for using velvet and chenille. Outdoor fabric has become so good, in fact, that Cannon and Frank are even using it indoors.

“They are also perfect for family room groups and children’s rooms — anywhere that fabric might get stained,” Cannon said.

“Just yesterday I was at a house where we had done the breakfast room chairs in a pale aqua herringbone. The client was asking if there was anything she could do about some stains. I told her all she needed was soap and water. We scrubbed it out and let it dry. The stains were gone. That’s the real beauty of indoor/outdoor fabric.”

KEEPING IT LIGHT Outdoor lighting has come a long way since the simplicity of a porch light. With boundless options, you can go bright and bold or soft and sexy.

“I love low, soft ambient lighting outdoors that allows you to still see the stars in the night sky,” Frank said. “And now there are so many LED lighting options, you can use lighting candles to light the pool. The best outdoor

lighting should include multiple sources of low, warm lighting that’s inviting. Everyone looks good in that kind of light.”

GET MOVING Being outside gives you room to move, so why not take advantage of this with your furniture? Outside furniture should be anything but static, according to Cannon.

“Rocking chairs. Chairs that bounce and swivel. Outdoor seating should be animated, have movement,” Cannon said. “On our porch, we had a swing, two bouncing chairs and two rocking chairs. Keep things moving — and make sure it’s comfortable. It has to be comfortable. If you love

how something looks but it’s not comfortable, why bother?”

Among his favorite outdoor things: swings.

“Swings are the best,” added Cannon. “That’ something that most showrooms don’t have. No one has swings anymore. We would love to see a great line of outdoor swings. And they are real gift-y.”

MAKE IT YOURS What you can do with your outdoor living space is really only limited by your own imagination.

Come up with a wish list, suggested Cannon. “Think of all possibilities of things you’d love to do inside and do them outside,” he said. “If you can dream it, you can get it done.”
