Driving Social Change in Business and Design with Luke Anderson, Founder, StopGap Foundation, Engineer and Social Innovator

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 7 • 3:00PM–4:00PM • $50 • PALOMINO A/B W20 – DRIVING SOCIAL CHANGE IN BUSINESS AND DESIGN [ BOMI 1.0 CPD • 1.0 AAA Structured LH • 1.0 HSW-Barrier Free Hour IDCEC Approved ] Ten years ago, social innovation and social enterprise were foreign concepts. Why would a business care about anything other than making money? Now, the pendulum has swung the other way. As socially innovative products and companies began to crop up, corporations started to wake up to a new reality. Today’s consumers are not only demanding that companies do good, they are using their dollars to prove that corporate social responsibility and social innovation can fuel massive growth. In this talk, Luke Anderson explains the rise of StopGap, the social innovation project he founded that has changed the conversation around accessibility and inclusivity in Toronto. Luke will introduce your audience to the concept of social enterprise and how it has the capacity to unite business and social change. He will share the moving story of the accident that inspired StopGap, and how great ideas often come from a place of need. And, he will reveal how and why businesses must embrace the mindset of social innovation to succeed.

ROLLIN STANLEY WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 7 • 8:00AM–9:00AM • $50 • PALOMINO D/E W01 – OPENING PLENARY: CALGARY 2.0: THE EVOLUTION OF OUR CITY SUPPORTED BY [ BOMI 1.0 CPD • 1.0 AAA Structured LH • 1.0 General Hour IDCEC Approved ] Calgary – it’s one hell of a town. An economic downturn combined with a surge in economic diversification and outside of the box thinking, has created the spirit of an underdog in Calgary. With a renewed sense of optimism, and a myriad of achievements under their belt, the city is poised to take on the next generation of the world economy. In this morning plenary, General Manager of Urban Strategy at the City of Calgary, Rollin Stanley, will address how this next generation economy is being considered in the planning of our city. Recognizing the migration, demographic, and cultural shifts the city is experiencing, Rollin will expand on how these trends are changing the composition of the city. Urban centers around North America have shifted focus to deal with technological change.

Success can be found on a spreadsheet, says Luke. But it can also be found in your community. When businesses take on the challenges facing the people around them, real change can—and will—happen. Speaker: Luke Anderson, Founder, StopGap Foundation, Engineer and Social Innovator

Architecture Keynote: Challenging Typologies What Does a Typical Building Look Like in 21st Century Canada? THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 8 • 11:00AM–12:00PM • $50 • PALOMINO A/B T08 – ARCHITECTURE KEYNOTE: CHALLENGING TYPOLOGIES – WHAT DOES A TYPICAL BUILDING LOOK LIKE IN 21ST CENTURY CANADA? [ 1.0 AAA Structured LH • 1.0 General Hour IDCEC Approved ] Amongst industry, there’s a common misunderstanding between building PROGRAMS and building TYPOLOGIES. A building program is defined by the owner’s requirement. That could be, for example, an office or residential building of a certain size and complexity. But what that doesn’t tell us, is whether that program is hosted by a building that is light or dark, tall or flat, iconic or low-key. One can imagine a program such as a student classroom being hosted by a shaded box with limited views, being substantially different than a naturally illuminated box with a terrace or a garden attached to it. Or for example, a place of worship being hosted by an 8-foot tall space versus 80-foot tall space of divine scale that induces the experience and helps us connect with another dimension of life. This keynote will take a different view on the way we build contemporary architecture in Alberta. Speakers will challenge conventional typologies, a practice that is often disregarded in building planning and design. Presenters will profile examples that have used purpose first to create a different engagement in space, inspiring healthy and sustainable buildings. Providing a future forward look, presenters will highlight the role this practice will play in advancing the state of architecture and the makeup of our communities. Moderator: Jason S. Johnson, Associate Dean – Architecture, University of Calgary Speakers: Nima Javidi, Partner, Ja Architecture Studio Ben Klumper, Co-Founder, MoDA Colin Neufeld, Partner, 5468796 architecture Vedran Skopac, Associate, Manasc Isaac

ALYSSA BOISVERT

With all Provinces and Territories working to build resilience to climate change, there has been question of whether the TDR will keep Alberta’s infrastructure resilient in the next gen. climate. To ensure the safety of all Albertans, AI has undertaken a study to better understand whether the TDR will hold up to future climate change impacts (hotter weather, changing precipitation patterns, increased frequency in severe weather events such as wildfires and flooding). This seminar will present the findings of this study, expanding on the rigorous requirements that tested strong and true in ensuring the efficiency and resilience of public buildings. The presenters will also touch on the recommendations made to further improve the resilience of our building stock, including: using a project weather file to determine energy needs and corresponding design; increasing supports to achieve net zero by 2030; and enhancing measures to mitigate flood risk. Anyone involved in the design, construction, and management of real estate will benefit from attending this seminar.

Attendees will gain valuable insights into the origins of the major issues affecting building envelopes and their ultimate impact on the structure of the buildings.

Speakers: Alyssa Boisvert, Manager, Strategic Policy, Alberta Infrastructure Matt Grace, President, Mission Green Building

Attendees will learn about the process for investigation, evaluation of findings, recommendations and options for repairs as well as real case studies that look at the full gambit of the problem, including litigation, insurance, special assessments, and available financing options.

Speaker: Brian Shedden, Principal, Entuitive

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 7 • 1:45PM–2:45PM • $50 W19 – NEXT GENERATION DISTRICT ENERGY SYSTEMS [ BOMI 1.0 CPD • 1.0 AAA Structured LH • 1.0 HSW-Sustainability Hour IDCEC Approved ] District energy systems are gaining momentum across North America. However, the traditional “heating Use of district energy systems is VLADIMIR MIKLER gaining momentum across North America. This trend, led by institutional campuses, such as universities or hospitals, and larger-scale commercial developments is being spurred by a wide variety of drivers ranging from performance improvements to existing steam or hot water networks, to more ambitious new systems targeting full transition to renewable and zero-carbon energy sources and technologies. As the traditional approach to district energy “heating only” service no longer meets the current trends, needs and goals of our society, Integral Group has developed several innovative “next generation” district energy solutions. These systems not only provide both heating and cooling, but are flexible enough to accommodate to a multitude of “low-carbon” and “low-exergy” sources and energy conversion technologies. These “next generation” district energy systems are technically sound, have stellar environmental performance (some capable of achieving Net Zero Carbon), and are cost competitive. This presentation outlines the approach and methodology Integral Group has developed and used successfully for next generation district energy systems. The speaker will illustrate these applications on several case studies of district energy projects currently in various stages of design and construction.

This case study reveals the decisions and design thinking to renew rather than replace. From the utterly practical- moving labs to the upper floors to reduce ducted pathways to the penthouse, to the wildly inventive - programming a four-storey glass facade to display patterns when the glazing tints in response to light levels, this project emphasizes the ‘new’ in renewal at a fraction of the cost of starting over.

Another year has passed with a flurry of activity in the Canadian cannabis construction market in preparation for legalization. This joint presentation is an update to the 2017 BUILDEX presentation, outlining the evolving state of design of production facilities, and discussing local regulatory considerations and perspectives.

THURSDAY SESSIONS THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 8 • 9:30AM–10:30AM • $50 • QUARTER HORSE A/B T03 – HOW TO WORK LESS – INNOVATION, EFFICIENCY AND THE VALUE OF CREATIVITY IN THE WORKPLACE

use the workplace as a foundation to demonstrate how to use these tools however attendees will walk away with an analogue that can be applied to any complex issue. Speaker: Annette Barrelet, Manager of Workplace Strategy, Teknion

[ BOMI 1.0 CPD ] Rather than rewarding working smart, there is an unhealthy focus in today’s workplace on working ‘hard’ — even if it is less than efficient.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 8 • 11:00AM–12:00PM • $50 • PALOMINO C T09 – CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTS 101

Despite what is known about diminishing returns on hours worked after 50 hour a week, common Industrial work cultures counterintuitively honour greater hours spent at the office, which pushes workers to operate at less than their best selves. Overburdened with inefficiencies, redundancies, and labour-intensive tasks, most workers are supersaturated with tasks that take much time, but offer little value.

[ BOMI 1.0 CPD • 1.0 AAA Structured LH • 1.0 General Hour IDCEC Approved ]

Given what is known about the distressing impacts to health, personal relationships, and work quality, a more impactful contribution to your organization would be innovating to produce greater efficiency, as opposed to long and unfruitful hours at the desk. Success shouldn’t be measured in sacrifice. Rather, companies should be encouraging, recognizing, and promoting innovation and efficiency. Individuals can promote that agenda by taking the initiative to create efficiency and generate buy-in from management. This seminar will inspire you to adopt a new approach to your work. The presenter will provide an arsenal of tools and techniques that will contribute to working smarter, not harder. Focusing on innovating for efficiency, the presenter will go into detail on how to identify opportunities for improvements, expanding on creative solutions that can easily be put in place. Furthermore, this session will discuss the importance of adjusting one’s mind-set in creating a work environment that is more sustainable for all, while simultaneously ensuring the best ROI for the organization. Speaker: Luticia Foreman, Senior Planner, Graham Construction

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 8 • 9:30AM–10:30AM • $50 • PALOMINO C T05 – DESIGN THINKING – THE DISCOVERY DILEMMA [ BOMI 1.0 CPD • 1.0 AAA Structured LH • 1.0 General Hour IDCEC Approved ] Where was your last great idea? When faced with a complex problem, we often tend to jump to the solution, but may exclude a critical part of the creative problem solving: discovery. Through this interactive workshop, design thinking principles are applied bringing the discovery process to life. The presenter will share simple and effective tools used to define and solve a problem. This seminar will

Constructions projects vary widely and it is essential that those working in, or advising, the construction industry are knowledgeable about the limitations and pitfalls of commonly used contracts, and the important provisions to pay close attention to.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 8 • 1:00PM–2:00PM • $50 • PALOMINO A/B T04 – ADAPTIVE REUSE – THE HYPOTHESIS AND REALITY OF CONVERTING OLD OFFICE TO NEW MULTIFAMILY [ BOMI 1.0 CPD • 1.0 AAA Structured LH • 1.0 General Hour IDCEC Approved ] With the current office vacancy rate sitting at 27% adaptive reuse and space adaptability has become a very popular conversation in Calgary as of late. From this conversation, a speculation has stemmed that old office buildings can’t be repurposed into alternate asset types, but is this really true? This presentation will address this exact question. Taking a case study approach the presenters will explore the reality of converting old office space into new multifamily residential. Speaking from firsthand experience, the presenters will expand on these conversions from a development and construction perspective addressing the feasibility of such projects. Attendees will also learn about the unique challenges that arise from a project of this nature and how to better plan and prepare for them. [ BOMI 1.0 CPD • 1.0 AAA Structured LH • 1.0 HSW-Sustainability Hour IDCEC Approved ]

Canada’s first ever National Housing Strategy is a 10-year, $40 billion plan to create a new generation of housing in Canada. This unprecedented investment will strengthen the middle class, cut chronic homelessness in half and fuel our economy. By bringing together the public, private and non-profit sectors, this re-engagement in affordable housing will ensure Canadians across the country have access to housing that meets their needs and is affordable.

Our existing building stock has significant potential for energy savings and carbon reduction. Commercially available sustainability certifications for existing buildings such as LEED EBOM, BOMA BEST, WELL, and Fitwel standards provide defined framework and metrics for targeting sustainability in existing buildings. This presentation will discuss several case studies where these sustainability certifications were considered for retrofit implications, capital and operating cost, and additional benefits to building users.

Attend this seminar and learn about key initiatives such as the Innovation Fund, the Demonstrations Initiative, Solutions Labs, and other innovative research programs under the umbrella of Affordable Housing. If you’re interested in seeing what innovative projects are being built across the country, or have a transformative technology that could contribute to the future of housing affordability, this session is for you. Speaker: Dany Skelling, Affordable Housing Specialist, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation

Responsible for a portfolio of approximately 2000 buildings, Alberta Infrastructure (AI) must ensure maximum project efficiency and the accurate and timely management of asset information. With this being a critical piece in infrastructure and building planning and management, AI decided to explore Digital Project Delivery as a tool to achieve this. In March of 2018, after leading a Digital Project Delivery working group inclusive of key industry stakeholders, AI released their Digital Project Delivery Requirements as an important first step towards digital transformation.

This presentation will demonstrate how affordable, sustainable and accessible homes can be achieved simultaneously, without trade-offs. The presenters will explain how this can be accomplished by illustrating the various designs, materials, construction methods, and technologies available.

As the rest of industry continues to embrace digital platforms as a tool to enhance their own projects, practitioners are looking to Alberta Infrastructure to learn from example. This session features key individuals that were involved in the development and deployment of AI’s Digital Project Delivery Requirements. Speaking to the business opportunity that Digital Project Delivery presented, this session will expand on the process and key considerations that were accounted for in the establishment of realistic and achievable Requirements. The presenters will expand on the opportunities that this technology provides throughout the different stages of the project and asset lifecycle, expanding on the challenges realized and lessons learned to date.

This presentation will help foster a culture of innovation in the housing industry to encourage adoption practices that ensure true affordability that is accessible and sustainable. Elizabeth Huculak will focus on the affordability aspect of the presentation. She will demonstrate the need for affordable housing, and how improved design materials and building practices can lower shelter costs, improve homeowners’ quality of life, and improve housing security. Moreover, she will discuss long-term affordability aspect of accessible and sustainable homes. Darby Lee Young will then shed light on the need for universally accessible design in homes and communities by demonstrating how disabilities can affect almost everyone, in different ways and for different periods of time. She will also focus on the actual implementation of accessible design in homes, and how it can save homeowners money in the long run.

Attendees will walk away with a better understanding of the considerations that need to be taken into account in the development of your own digital project delivery requirements.

Finally, Melanie Ross will discuss various approaches to ensure the adoption of high performance sustainability measures, to not only help the save the environment, but also to help homeowners save money.
