KEYNOTES

TUESDAY, MARCH 20 • 9:00AM–10:00AM • $45 • ROOM 109 T01 – KEYNOTE: ENGINEERING SMART CITIES: THE POWER OF IOT, DATA AND DIGITAL TWINNING

SUPPORTED BY

[ BOMI 1.0 CPD • 1 AAA Structured Learning Hours ] Driven by the challenges of rapid urbanization, cities are implementing advanced sociotechnical (complex systems that recognize the interaction between people and their surroundings) solutions to become smarter. The success of this evolution relies on systems that can combine data from individual infrastructure components (i.e. automobile traffic on roadways, occupants in buildings) to the urban scale, and vice versa. However, to develop a holistic understanding of a city’s multiple states of flux, we must rely on the symbiosis of such disparate data.

TUESDAY, MARCH 20 • 3:00PM–4:00PM • $45 • ROOM 109 T20 – KEYNOTE: BE BOLD, BE BRAVE, BE EXPERIENTIAL: WHY BUILD A CULTURE OF EXPERIMENTATION [ BOMI 1.0 CPD • 1 AAA Structured Learning Hours • 1 General Hour IDCEC Approved ] Competition is for losers. Today, our competitive global market is unforgiving and ruthless –no one is spared. Consumer expectations and behaviors, shaped by new market entrants, have also changed more in the last 10 years than in the last 100 years combined. Disruptive innovation is forcing firms to reimagine their customer experiences, channel strategies and business models. How do we survive? Today, we need to be bold, brave and experimental. We can only keep up if we foster a relentless culture that promotes human-centered design and rapid experimentation. This is our only competitive advantage.

This keynote will examine the Internet of Things, Data and the concept of Digital Twinning as it applies to improving the urban realm, elevating the concept of smart cities to a whole new level. Taking a case study approach, Dr. John E. Taylor will describe the creation of a Smart City Digital Twin of the City of Atlanta and how such a platform can enable increased visibility into a cities’ human-infrastructuretechnology interactions. The presentation will further discuss how spatio-temporal information within a city can be collected from and enabled through the connectivity offered by Internet of Things (IoT) and virtualization. Attendees will walk away with a better understanding of how these platforms can provide critical forward looking insights into a city’s smarter performance and growth, allowing us to make better informed design decisions when it comes to the urban and built environment. Speaker: Dr. John E. Taylor, Professor, School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology

In this session, you will: • Learn why 2018 is the greatest (and scariest) time to be in business. • Learn why taking a human-centered approach helps build culture, but also de-risks projects by saving time and money. • Explore how the leading companies have embraced the power of competition and experimentation. • Learn from Shawn’s experience on the battleground of building culture with clients and internally. • Obtain methods and tools for transforming your organization’s culture. Speaker: Shawn Kanungo, Partner, Queen & Rook Capital

[ BOMI 1.0 CPD • 1 AAA Structured Learning Hours • 1 General Hour IDCEC Approved ] This session will focus on the elements of interior design and how that may be used to create a more positive experience, to create more happiness at work. The presentation will range across types of spaces one encounters in the modern office over the course of a work day, and proposes that feeling welcome, empowered, connected, calm and comfortable helps people to do their best work. Equally, companies that seek to become skilled in leveraging the power of design, that

use design to engage and inspire, often find workers a great deal more likely to exhibit creativity, commitment, and a spirit of community. Whatever the prevailing aesthetic model of design, and however complex the concerns and constraints that designers must address, we have a great opportunity to put beauty and meaning into the everyday work environment. We have a chance, and even a mandate, to improve people’s lives. That, in essence, is the story of design. through innovation and investment in LEED certified green buildings. As we move toward a carbonconstrained future, the conversation in building design and retrofit must shift from ‘energy efficiency’ to ‘carbon’ to ensure we arrive at the best solutions. The CaGBC’s new Zero Carbon Building Standard uses carbon as the key metric in assessing building performance and combines this measure with enhanced envelope performance and renewable energy options. To date 16 pilot projects representing different building types, sizes and locations have signed on to be the first projects to achieve zero carbon performance. Zero Carbon represents the next cycle of innovation in green building continuing Canada’s global leadership in taking tangible steps in reducing carbon emissions from buildings. Recent market pressures have forced construction in Alberta to begin an evolution of sorts with technology and alternative delivery models playing a lead role. We know that things need to change for our industry to thrive... but what happens beyond the buzzwords of BIM and IPD? This session will tell the story of how a 20-year old Edmonton Contractor quickly transformed from a traditional, “old school” subcontractor to a Lean leader in their industry. The presenters will share steps of the evolution, from a philosophical shift inside leadership to infusing Lean throughout the corporate culture. Going beyond textbook and theory, this session will offer attendees more than the standard slide deck and flip charts. Real examples of success and failure will provide a framework for the presentation with emphasis placed on the key elements employed and the tools deployed. Attendees will leave this presentation with valuable takeaway tools in addition to a story of a company that radically changed the way it worked - nearly doubling its project volume per employee and now reaping the rewards of an enduring competitive advantage. A new paradigm of “what is possible” will inspire you to make change within your own sphere of influence. Speakers: Dennis Cuku, President, Revision One Performance Partners Adam Richardson, President, Tempest Fire Protection

In today’s world of constant Cyber Security threats, it’s more important than ever to have a business continuity strategy in place. It is equally important to educate your employees on how to look for potential cyber security threats. In this seminar, the speaker will address these and other important questions: What can you train your employee to look for? What measures can you take to mitigate potential risks? What questions should you be asking yourself as you put a business continuity plan in place? With the continued transition to more and more technological platforms and tools, cybersecurity is of eminent importance both as an individual and a corporation. [ BOMI 1.0 CPD • 1 AAA Structured Learning Hours • 1 General Hour IDCEC Approved ]

Speaker: D.M. Stoneman, Business, Non-profit and Institutional Energy Savings Program, ICF

Vancouver and East-Coast based firms get a lot of media attention – some say, more than they deserve. It has been noted that Alberta Architecture & Design firms have focused marketing efforts on RFP production and advertising, perhaps in the hopes that the projects themselves will attract the public and strengthen the firm’s reputation. Unsurprisingly, Albertan projects rarely make it to the front pages of high-profile publications. This situation is especially true for smaller firms. This presentation will introduce the audience to three Public Relations tactics: media relations, speaking engagements, and social media. As these three key PR tactics entail so much more than spamming journalists with emails, lecturing the peers that already know your practice, and having an intern sharing funny cat pictures and retweeting aimlessly, learning how to best approach these tasks is a fundamental step to showcasing a firm’s work. This presentation will provide you with basics you need to know to get your projects in front of the right people.

TUESDAY, MARCH 20 • 2:00PM–3:00PM • $45 • PERFORMEX STAGE T19 – ACCESSIBILITY AND BARRIER FREE DESIGN [ BOMI 1.0 CPD • 1 AAA Structured Learning Hours • 1 HSW-Building Code Hour IDCEC Approved ] Attendees will have a better understanding of when, and to what extent, barrier-free design may be applicable to their new or existing projects. Content is designed for industry professionals with beginner to intermediate knowledge of the Alberta Building Code. Speaker: Samantha Proulx, Accessibility and Building Code Consultant, Jensen Hughes Consulting Canada Ltd.

WEDNESDAY SESSIONS WEDNESDAY, MARCH 21 • 8:30AM–10:30AM • $65 • ROOM 102 W01 – THE WALTZ OF LIGHT AND ARCHITECTURE

WED, MARCH 21 • 8:00AM–11:30PM • $150 • ROOM 103 W02 – THE RISKS INHERENT IN PLANNING FOR PROJECT SUCCESS

[ BOMI 2.0 CPD • 2 AAA Structured Learning Hours • 2 General Hours IDCEC Approved ]

[ BOMI 3.5 CPD • 3.5 AAA Structured Learning Hours • 3.5 General Hours IDCEC Approved ]

In the era prior to artificial light, living organisms followed the circadian rhythm. They woke when the sun rose and retired to shelter when the sun set. Their energy levels increased as the sky brightened and fell with the fading of light. People integrated with the daily cycle of the sun.

Integrated project planning is a process and expertise-driven approach to ensuring project success. As project managers and leaders of high quality teams, we need to understand how the pieces of the product and project are connected and the risks involved. Through a DR. BUD MACAULAY LUSH collaborative and inclusive process, we can develop effective and welldesigned plans that provide enhanced assurance of successful project completion.

Buildings and fenestrations were positioned at ideal angles to capture the sun’s rays. Light danced off walls, floors and cast shadows in their wake. This performance occurred daily, the waltz of light and architecture became a comforting routine in people’s lives. In modern times, an abundance of artificial, uncontrolled light has led to a disconnect between people and the natural rhythm of the sun and arguably of the passing of time over the course of the day. A space with limited glazing is a vacuum and occupant perception of time, weather and seasons is challenged – is it mid-morning or night, summer or fall? The contrast between interior and exterior is jarring, integration with the natural world is lost. In this seminar, we explore means to integrate light and shadow back into the built environment, and welcome a return of the waltz of light and architecture.

New / Green Product Showcase participants can be identified on the tradeshow floor by their signs.

WHY LEDs? We’re Canadians. The weather spectrum we see demands quality. LEDs are very tolerant, withstanding temperatures of -40⁰ C to 65⁰ C. Made for longevity, our LEDs are rated for 100,000 hours at 25⁰ C. Better news is LEDs will actually last longer in colder temperatures; less stress is placed on the diodes and decay is slowed. LEDs are of slim design, lightweight, nonfragile, cost effective and importantly: Our LEDs are CSA approved. www.selkirksigns.com

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 21 • 11:30AM–12:30PM • $45 • PERFORMEX STAGE W11 – WHAT NOW? ONE YEAR OF ENERGY CODE AND BEYOND

[ BOMI 1.0 CPD • 1 AAA Structured Learning Hours ]

[ BOMI 1.0 CPD • 1 AAA Structured Learning Hours • 1 HSW-Building Code Hour IDCEC Approved ]

Designing and constructing a new facility or renovating an existing facility is exciting and the finished structures are looking as good or better than the drawings after completion. Acoustics are critically important in these large open spaces given the use of high ceilings and hard flooring as hearing is the next sense we use after enjoying how great something looks. This presentation will focus on common acoustic treatment options, their relative cost/value, their constructability, and the safety/liability risks associated with each of them.

After a year of NECB 2011 this presentation will highlight trends for good and bad. Presenting the challenges and opportunities that the code has presented, the speakers will expand on how we, as industry professionals, can do better. The presenters will conclude with an overview of what is coming next for energy codes and high performance buildings in Edmonton and Alberta. Speakers: Juan Monterrosa, Senior Engineer, Green Building and Energy Code, City of Edmonton Justin Pockar, Energy & Environment Coordinator, City of Calgary

Speaker: James Teppan, P.Eng., President, Western Noise Control

[ BOMI 1.0 CPD • 1 AAA Structured Learning Hours • 1 General Hour IDCEC Approved ] Running a business today is extremely challenging. Time and capital are finite. Business decisions are getting tougher with less time to gain returns on the investment needed to put them into action. Mistakes get very costly and the implications can be far-reaching. Technology, competitors, customers, employees, suppliers, industries, and government policies are all putting pressure on the economic factors that a business must balance to be profitable. This poses some challenges and threats for small to medium organizations: How do you keep up? Are you an executive or business owner? How do you get the perspective, advice, and mindset to achieve meaningful results in the chaos of today? Do you have an organization that is adapting and resilient to these factors? How do you decide what to implement action with and what to ignore? Learn how top organizations are getting in front of change and learning to thrive in the chaos of today. Learn the four fundamentals you must master to keep ahead of change. Speaker: Jeffery Eschak CPA, CMA, President, Blue Onyx Growth & Leadership Advisors Inc.

WEDNESDAY SESSIONS WEDNESDAY, MARCH 21 • 12:30PM–1:30PM • $45 • ROOM 107A W13 – BROADENING THE SUSTAINABLE DESIGN DISCUSSION – BIOPHILIA, BEAUTY AND FITNESS [ BOMI 1.0 CPD • 1 AAA Structured Learning Hours • 1 Health, Safety, Welfare Hour IDCEC Approved ] As employers seek to attract and retain top talent, they are beginning to embrace more holistic concepts of wellness in the design of their workplaces. Discussions have emerged around designing for biophilia (the human-nature connection), beauty and fitness, and although designers have been applying this thinking for years, the strategies are just now becoming more formalized and explicit. The chatter is often loudest in sustainable design circles, with the release of new standards such as WELL. This session will discuss what it means to create a building or space that nurtures the human-nature connection, how to promote occupant fitness through design, addressing why this is an important part of the sustainability conversation. This seminar will be co-presented by sustainability and design professionals, to provide a balance of theory and practice.
