Through the design process, certain imperatives are scripted into the form and operation of SPONSOR technology. And today, as cities and technology are rapidly merging, those imperatives come to define our cities’ governance, economics, and culture. They become the infrastructure of everyday life. So the deeper question is: How are we designing our urban technologies? Should we keep using MATTHEW the familiar strategy of entrepreneurship: CLAUDEL move fast and break things? Should we borrow strategies from the fields of construction, architecture, and planning? Or could we imagine an entirely new approach, a more civic and spatial form of innovation? In his keynote presentation, Matthew will explore these questions and share his work at MIT, where he has co-founded a design-innovation program called MITdesignX. SPEAKER: z Matthew Claudel, Head of Civic Innovation, MITdesignX
The session will explore the challenges SUPPORTED BY and opportunities that designers and their corporate clients face in their quest to balance the practical determinants of real estate strategy with the mandate to improve people’s lives through design. Whatever the prevailing aesthetic model of design, and however complex the concerns and constraints that designers must address, we have a great opportunity to put beauty and meaning into the everyday work environment.

As qualified design professionals, we are PRESENTED BY key contributors to sustainable, healthy, and economically viable spaces. Our scope of work spans construction and project management, design conceptualization, sustainability, health and wellness and product and material selection. On top of this, we’ve taken on the complex role of “corporate strategist” consulting on productivity, culture, branding and more. As demands of the market change and industry continues to evolve, we must ask ourselves how do we define our position in the building industry and advocate for a scope of work that enables us to best service our clients. Addressing this and other key questions currently impacting the state of the interior design profession, this group of esteemed panelists will discuss the challenges and opportunities that interior designers face. Examining the state of the industry in context of the local, national and international landscape, panelists will expand on the shifting market demands impacting the building industry. They will narrow down on the direct impacts being realized within the design vertical and expand on what we can do as design practitioners to solidify our positioning in the market. Shifting focus to design itself, panelists will also highlight key issues such as socio-economic conditions, safety and security and the importance of having a global citizen mindset within the built environment. Panelists will conclude with predictions on where the industry is headed and what the future of our profession looks like.

Leaders of BC’s industrial, commercial and institutional employer organizations will debate the merits of BC’s new Community Benefits Agreement (CBA). Announced in July 2018, the new government policy requires all workers on the Pattullo Bridge and Highway 1 Expansion Projects to join the Building Trades Union, regardless of their current labour affiliation. As industry waits for more projects to be assigned under the CBA, it’s shaping up to be the biggest issue in BC’s construction industry in decades. Supporters say it improves project outcomes and access for local and equity seeking groups, while detractors believe it amounts to conscription of the construction workforce and undermines the role of all employers, union or non.

What business owner doesn’t want to develop a big, bold brand for their business? Unfortunately, the majority of businesses are failing to tap into their brand’s full potential with most companies only tapping into 5% of its profit building power. The problem isn’t business owners failing to invest in their brands. The problem is the way society consumes media, selects the brands they buy from and how they choose their next employer have all rapidly evolved; yet the approach to brand development hasn’t - until now. Karley Cunningham’s new world view of brand cracks the code for developing a brand that cuts through the noise, stands out from the competition, attracts ideal clients, investors and top talent, and establishes a great company culture. This session will reveal the evolved approach to developing a powerful brand. W08 // Smart Buildings: A Holistic View for Building Owners & Operators: IoT, Data and Technology Enabled Environments Wednesday, February 13 • 9:00am–10:00am • $50 • Room 218/19 [ AIBC 1 Core LU • BOMI 1.0 CPDs • 1.0 General Hour IDCEC Approved ] PRESENTED BY Construction and real estate companies have long been incorporating smart building technology to minimize building costs, optimize asset performance, and hit energy efficiency requirements. However, the most forward-thinking players understand that Internet of Things-generated information creates value in ways that disrupt traditional commercial real estate business models.

With ongoing updates to the codes and referenced standards (the most recent being December 10, 2018 for BCBC and March 10, 2018 for VBBL), the practice for obtaining permit approval is ever evolving, and importance of this subject should not be underestimated. Attend this session for a practical discussion on the latest updates of the BCBC and VBBL, specifically looking at the implications on the day to day implementation for Interior Designers. Focusing on Part 3 with some discussion on Part 9, the presenter will answer the following questions: • What is the code? • What are the latest updates? • How does this affect by ability to get my permit?
There is certainly no lack of technology available to architects, engineers, contractors, and developers. We have seen a major push towards BIM (Building Information Modeling) over the last decade, yet many companies are still hesitant to embrace the software. We know technology is advancing at an exponential rate while the cost is declining. But many companies are reluctant to spend money on this sort of technology that has revolutionized so many other industries. The question we need to ask here is why? Is it simply a matter of cost or is it a lack of understanding of the usefulness of BIM technology? This presentation will touch on the history and theories behind BIM, fast tracking into the future, the presenter will discuss the next steps for the construction industry in relation to BIM. Speaking to specific case study scenarios the presenter will highlight the use of this technology in the support of two major development projects including Parq Vancouver and the Center for Mental Health and Addictions project. The presenter will demonstrate how to maximize the use of BIM in projects of these and similar nature, expanding on how minimize investment and risk. z Xenia Gordienko, BIM & Project Coordinator, EllisDon Corporation

As cities rapidly change, so do the functions of day and night. Today more than half the world population lives in urban spaces and this number keeps increasing rapidly. This demographic change has led to a shift toward urban life after dark, driven by rising 24/7 economies. Streets and exterior public spaces don’t serve only to bring pedestrians or vehicles safely from point A to B. They have become the unseen mesh that connects cultures, groups, and individuals together. Lighting should reinforce urban design so that a city can function after dark just as well as it does by day. The majority of city planners currently focus on their designs for daytime use, with the nighttime function and lighting of building facades, streets, public spaces, transportation, and landscapes often neglected. This presentation discusses how innovative lighting design approach and strategies would change the night scene of a city. Various case studies from Vancouver and cities around the world will be presented and discussed. The goal is to raise awareness for anyone who is involved in planning private and public spaces to connect the cities with citizens, moving beyond what is implemented in City of Vancouver and thinking about the future of this City at night. z Ellie Niakan, B.Interior Architecture, LC, CLD, Associate, Light Studio Lead, Integral z James KM Cheng, Principal, James KM Cheng Architects Inc.

For some time now the Vancouver Building Bylaw has been pushing Building Owners and Tenants to implement various levels of seismic resiliency improvements ranging from seismic bracing of T-bar ceilings, to full seismic upgrades of existing buildings. For many people, some of these proposed resiliency improvements may seem punishing, but in some respects, the City is acting in the best interests of its citizens.
experienced producers are rushing to construct high-tech growing facilities to cash in on the cannabis boom. The presenter, James Furlong of MCW, has been involved in the design of such facilities across Canada, and has found that while there are several similarities in the design approach for most projects, there are a surprising number of decisions that are left to the project team to navigate. Decisions that can be mission-critical. Regardless of one’s position on legalization, from a mechanical and electrical engineering perspective the buildings present a unique and challenging combination of requirements similar to designing a chef’s professional kitchen, inside an urban farm, inside a hospital, inside a bank. z James Furlong, Partner, MCW Hemisphere Ltd.
This session dives into the structural side of this discussion. The presenter will examine the pedestrian levels of S1, S2, and N1, N2 upgrades. As well, they will look at the more serious implications of S3, S4, and N3, N4 upgrades, and discuss how an educated approach can yield a successful project that satisfies client needs while increasing public safety.

Intuitively, we know that how we work, how we interact with each other, and how we use space differs across the globe. But is there a way to quantify how workplace expectations and needs differ globally? Is there a difference in how social relationships are valued? Does higher density equate to higher performance? As companies expand their business activities across borders, understanding how environments and cultures operate socially and spatially becomes more important than ever as one size or one global approach may no longer be appropriate.

Over the past seven years, Alberta Infrastructure has collaborated with several other ministries, including Alberta Education, Justice and Solicitor General and Municipal Affairs, to conduct Post Occupancy Evaluations (POEs) on schools, offices, courthouses and postsecondary institutions. These evaluations document the performance of integral parts of the facility, its functionality and how the building meets facility users’ needs, activities and goals. The purpose is to continually improve facility planning, design, construction and operation. Through these evaluations, lessons learned have been identified that, if followed during design and planning, can directly affect the success of the project as it evolves into an operational facility. The most prevalent of these lessons learned on office planning and design will be shared as part of the presentation. This session will also offer an overview of the methodology and scope of work used to conduct the evaluations as well as how lessons learned are publicized and applied to future projects to improve functionality and flexibility, thereby creating resilient, innovative environments. z Lesley Woodland, Post Occupancy Evaluation Coordinator, Alberta Infrastructure

Navigating the complexities of the commercial real estate industry requires careful integration across a number of industry disciplines, in order to deliver true real estate value to the organization. Occupancy costs are typically the second largest expense within a company’s P&L and often, in larger organizations not managed effectively. Due to the wide variety of expectations placed upon the physical work environment, (Technology enhancements, Human Resources, Business Operations, and fluctuating local Market Conditions), a comprehensive, integrated and flexible management approach to real estate is required more now than ever.

Each discipline within Corporate Real Estate plays an integral part to the overall success of the real estate portfolio and, by extension, the ultimate success of the business units it supports. However, if these distinct functions are not clearly aligned from a strategic objectives and operating model standpoint, the opportunity to deliver value to the organization will be significantly hindered. This presentation will review four functional areas within Corporate Real Estate as they relate to the life cycle of the asset and highlight the benefits delivered to the organization when their business objectives are aligned.

Millennials will soon be the largest cohort that planners will plan for. This presentation focuses on developing a game plan for successful adaptations in planning and design strategies that need to evolve from current prevailing practices to meet the changes occurring through generational expectations. This is best achieved by understanding the changing lifestyle, preferences, choices and expectations of the “Millennials (Gen Y)” and addressing them systematically through an adaptive approach in land use and social planning interventions. This generational resilience and sustainability in planning is analyzed under three broad categories which include: Professional, Working, Entrepreneurial Expectations and Its Impact on Planning; Use of Technology and its Impact of Planning; and Physical, Emotional, Mental Health Expectations and Its Impact on Planning. This presentation will go into detail on the science behind each of these categories expanding on the considerations that need to be taken into account in ensuring healthy and supportive cities for all.

Commercial facilities are large consumers of energy. There are many novel ways to reduce energy consumptions and GHG foot print of these buildings. This presentation will delve into the energy conservation measures that not only can be applied to specific types of facilities that will be explained but to other commercial buildings and institutional facilities as well. This presentation will inspire stakeholders in the built environment to target lower consumption and costs by thinking outside of the box when it comes to their energy efficiency approach.
The University of New Brunswick’s (UNB) new Kinesiology building is in the running to be the first building in the world to be certified under WELL’s Education Facility pilot project. As the second building to join UNB’s longstanding vision for a Healthy Living Village, it sits high above Fredericton with views of the St. John river and the lush vegetation it supports. The building itself incorporates these spectacular views achieving high levels of daylight throughout the interior spaces, an impressive feat when you consider the building is built into a steep hill.

PRESENTED BY The LED revolution is well on its way, with LED technology continually becoming more viable and less expensive. There is a concern however, that customers will retrofit their lighting systems, or install new lighting systems, without incorporating the advanced/ networked lighting control (NLC) systems that really make this LED technology shine. To help building owners reap energy efficiency and other benefits (convenience, IoT connectivity, etc.) of advanced controls, BC Hydro is preparing to launch a pilot program focused on NLC adoption.
Heat pump technologies can provide an energy efficient heating and cooling option for HVAC systems that can improve building environments, as well as provide GHG emission reductions. A decade after the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the proposed Accessible Canada Act (Bill C-81) had its first reading in the House of Commons in June 2018. Bill C-81 marks a paradigm shift in our understanding of, and attitude towards disability. No longer do we view disability as a medical condition, or a circumstance to be alleviated through acts of charity or welfare programs, rather it is now seen as a social phenomenon that results from the interaction of a person with an environment that, through its design, denies that person the opportunity of full participation in society. This presentation will provide an overview of the current state of this technology and the protocols being developed to ensure a seamless interface and consistent experience for users, whatever building they may be trying to access anywhere in Canada. Authorities having jurisdiction, building owners and designers will learn what role they can play in advancing this technology and hence improving accessibility in their buildings. Attendees will have the opportunity to try the technology for themselves. z David Brun, Founder & CEO, Gateway Navigation z Albert A.
