Instructor: Mark Mullert E-mail: Mark_Mullert@Baylor.edu Phone: 254-710-7606 Office Hours: by appointment Course Description: This course is intended to provide students with the fundamentals of rock climbing for lifelong leisure involvement. Course content will address personal fitness, knowledge of sport, equipment, climbing safety and technique. The majority of this course will take place within the indoor rock wall environment but skills will be transferable to a top rope, outdoor environment. This course is not intended to equip students to build anchors, lead groups, instruct or lead climb. Many of those skills will be covered in an advanced climbing course. To learn the history of rock climbing To understand the ethics and code of conduct related to the sport of rock climbing To learn the progression of climbing as a sport To learn basic terminology related to the sport of rock climbing To learn basic equipment used for rock climbing To learn how to belay proficiently To learn basic knots relevant to climbing, personal safety and rescue To understand rock climbing technique including movement and body/foot/hand position To learn and improve skills related to rock climbing indoors To learn and practice fitness for strength training related to the sport of climbing To learn basic safety and risk management practices to protect self and others To learn how to rappel


Attendance: Attendance begins on day one of classes, not on the day that you added the class. Regular attendance and class participation is required. A student who misses 8 or more classes on a TR scheduled class will earn a “F” per university attendance policy requiring 75% attendance. A participation grade will be given based on attendance. Excessive tardiness will be reflected in the participation grade.

Dress: Students must come to class dressed appropriately for rock climbing. a.

Long pants or long shorts that allow for freedom of movement. No short gym shorts or jeans. b. Shirts with sleeves c. Tennis shoes or athletic shoes. No flip flops, Crocs, etc… Course Location: McLane Student Life Center. Lecture Days: SLC Room TBA, Climb Days: Baylor ROCK Baylor ID Required: You will not be allowed in the McLane Student Life Center without at valid student i.d. or having previously registered for access via the biometric scanner (hand recognition system). The instructor cannot grant access and you will receive an absence. Equipment: There is no equipment required for this class. All equipment will be provided. However, students may wish to purchase their own harness, carabiner and belay device.

BAYLOR STATEMENT ON SAFETY FOR LF ACTIVITY LABS Completion of this course requires the attendance and participation in an activity class. The class may involve strenuous physical activity including, but not limited to, muscle strength and endurance training, cardiovascular conditioning and training, and other various fitness activities. Baylor University can provide no guarantee for your safety due to the risks inherent in such activities. The following describe some, but not all, of those risks: heart attacks, muscle strains, muscle pulls, muscle tears, broken bones, shin splints, heat prostration, injuries to knees, injuries to back, injuries to foot, or any other illness or soreness that I may incur, including death. Engaging in the class may require a degree of skill and knowledge not required in other classes. Each class participant will have responsibilities as a student for their own safety and the safety of others. The description above is not exhaustive and other unknown or unanticipated risks may result in property loss, injury or death. If you have concerns for your own safety or the safety of others, or encounter an injury you must immediately inform your instructor of those concerns and the facts or circumstances giving cause for those concerns. Also, if you have information which would lead you to believe that you have health limitations or restrictions which will impact your ability to participate in a safe manner in this course, you should inform the instructor immediately.


Course Evaluation Exams: There will be two written tests during the semester plus a final exam. Tests and Final are worth 25 points each. No make-up exams are allowed unless prior arrangements have been made with the instructor. Students who plan to miss an exam must let the instructor know ahead of time so that alternate arrangements can be made. Students who miss an exam must document an illness, family emergency, or Baylor-sponsored athletic event (for Baylor athletes only) to become eligible for a make-up exam. Failure to do so will result in an assigned zero. Make-up exams must be completed within 1 week of the original exam date. The final exam (last class day scheduled for the regular term – no exceptions) must be taken at the designated time and will be comprehensive in nature. Technical Skill Assessment: There will be 5 skills areas in which students will be assessed based on a skills rubric. Each skill check area is worth 10 points for a total of 50 points. These skill areas include: 1) knot tying, 2) belayer & climber communication, 3) belaying, 4) spotting and 5) rappelling. Climbing Skill Improvement Assessment: Students will be evaluated on their improvement of climbing based on difficulty of routes. There will be 3 formal climbing skill improvement assessments throughout the semester. Each assessment is worth 20 points and is based on their progression of skill development and ability to climb higher number grades/more difficult routes. Students will be evaluated on: 1) Fluidity; 2) Staying on Route; 3) Completing Route; and 4) Progressively harder routes throughout the semester. Student improvement is worth 60 total points. If a student misses one of the skill assessment days, there will be one make-up day during class Quizzes: There will be a quiz over each of the 10 assigned readings. There will be a quiz on the History of climbing gear, usage, and Pros & Cons. The lowest quiz will be dropped. Quizzes are worth 10 points each. Participation: The participation/attendance grade will be based on the student’s unexcused absences. Excused absences include a documents illness, a family emergency, or a Baylor sponsored athletic event (Baylor NCAA athletes only). Students who are tardy by 10 minutes will not receive an absence but will not receive participation points for that day.

Human Performance Grading Policy All activity classes are on the standard Baylor grading policy of A, B+, B, C+, C, D, F unless that student has registered under the Pass/Fail section of the course. (Eligibility to register Pass/Fail is dependent on the student’s degree plan; School of Business does not permit such.) Changing to pass/fail should be done through drop/ad during the first week of class.

Grading Scale: A 288-320 points B+ 275-287 points B

256 -274 points

C+ 243- 255 points C

224 – 242 points

D 192 – 223 points F

191 points and below (or absent more than 75% of class)

Final Examination Final exam will be held during the final class day of the semester for this section. (The office of the Provost has approved the administering of final written exams for HP 1000-1199 classes on the last University schedule day for the corresponding class.
