COURSE SPECIFICS

Cost: SOLO WFA - $180 Provider: This course is taught by SOLO one of the most recognized names in the wilderness medicine community, and the longest running Wilderness Medicine Training Company in the World. www.soloschools.com Host: Baylor University Outdoor Adventure is offering this course in Central Texas at our campus in Waco. This course is open to all students, faculty, staff, and public who are interested in learning more about wilderness medicine and being prepared for emergencies. We are offering this course on the convenient Martin Luther King Jr. 3-day weekend. Come join us! Who is the WFA For? The WFA is the perfect course for the outdoor enthusiast or trip leader who wants a basic level of first aid training for short trips with family, friends, and outdoor groups. It also meets the ACA guidelines. What is taught? This WFA is 18 hours long and focuses on the basic skills of: Response and Assessment, Musculoskeletal Injuries, Environmental Emergencies, Survival Skills, Soft Tissue Injuries, and Medical Emergencies. Field Guide Students will receive a 100 page Field Guide to Wilderness First Aid. This is a full color textbook that covers the curriculum for WFA and AWFA. The book is lavishly illustrated with photos, drawing and diagrams to make learning easy. Is there an exam? Yes. There is ongoing evaluation of practical skills, and there are written assessments throughout the course.


Do I get certified? Yes, provided you demonstrate mastery in hands on skills and pass the written test. You will receive a SOLO WFA certification, which is good for two years. Does the WFA count as continuing education? The WFA may give continuing ed credits (depending on the specific requirements for your certification) and is approved for recertifying SOLO's Wilderness First Responder program.

LOGISTICS When to arrive: Ideally you should arrive in the evening before the course to get a good night sleep and prepare you for a few long days in and out of the classroom If you 18th are local and want to show up at 8:30am on January that would be great. The course will start promptly at 9:00am

REMEMBER: The course starts at 9AM. rd Where: The course will be held in the classroom on the 3 floor of the McLane Student Life Center, Room 318. Please show up a little early if you are not familiar with the campus. A link to the Campus Map can be found here. We are in building number 77 on the map. Directions: The McLane Student Life Center is located at 209 Speight Avenue, Waco, TX 76798


• From I-35 exit University Parks Drive towards Baylor Campus Drive down University Parks Drive • Take a Right on Bagby Avenue • Take another Right on Speight Avenue • Arrive at 209 Speight Ave., McLane Student Life Center. Look for Bronze Bear on the Circle. Where can I eat? The dining halls will be open all three days and the on campus restaurants will have food too. These include: Chik-Fil-A, Moo- Yah, Quiznos, Einstein’s Bagels, etc… Most days we will break between Noon and 1pm and you will have roughly an hour for lunch. On night one we will have CPR after dinner. What about Housing? Sorry we cannot provide housing for this course but would be glad to direct you to local campground, hotel, or bed and breakfast that fits your budget. What to Expect: Long days of learning new skills, possibly being outside for half the day, studying at night, cold weather, possible rain or snow, tons of fun.


WHAT TO BRING You should plan to wear or have with you clothing that will be appropriate to the season and location where you will be taking your course. Weather permittingm we will be spending a significant portion of the class time out-of- doors. The following List is to SUPPLEMENT the clothing you will be wearing and is to be considered a minimum. You are free to supplement it with anything else you would normally carry. You will be using your equipment to provide care, build splints, and to keep yourself and OTHERS warm. Required The following items should be packed for each class ___Raingear Tops and Bottoms (no ponchos) ___Warm Hat (synthetic* or wool) ___1 Pair Warm Gloves or Mittens (synthetic* or wool) ___Long Underwear Tops and Bottoms (synthetic* or wool) ___Warm Top and Bottom Layer (synthetic* or wool) ___2 Pair Warm Socks (synthetic* or wool) ___Pack (2000 cu. in. or larger) ___2 Water Bottles (1 liter/quart or larger) ___Hiking Boots or Sturdy Tennis Shoes (NOTE: No Crocs or Flip Flops) ___Notebook with Pen/Pencil *Polyester or Polypropylene (Capilene, Bergelene, Dri-Clime, etc.) *We do not recommend cotton. *EXPECT YOUR CLOTHES TO GET DIRTY Highly Recommended ___Watch With Second Hand (or digital with seconds) ___Pocket Knife or Leatherman ___Sunglasses ___Sleeping Pad (ensolite, Thermarest, Ridgerest, etc.) Other Considerations ___Rock Climbing Gear- for Climbing at the ROCK Wall after class ___Mountain Bike- Cameron Park has some of the best riding in Texas and is close by.
