MYLES OF SCIENCE OUTDOOR SCIENCE & LEADERSHIP STAFF SUMMER 2015 The MYLES of Science Environmental Education & Leadership Staff will work collaboratively with the MYLES of Science Director and the MYLES of Science Logistics Coordinator on summer research backpacking trips in Great Smoky Mountain National Park with junior high and high school students from the surrounding areas.

We are seeking qualified and passionate Montreat College Outdoor Education, Biology, Environmental Studies, and Environmental Education students to apply for this position.

HOURS Academic year: 1 monthly staff meeting for planning for the summer Summer: 1 full week of staff training + 6 weeks of summer leadership responsibilities.

COMPENSATION Academic year: $10 per hour for 2-3 hour monthly staff meetings Summer: • • • • • •

$2100 stipend (paid out monthly) Housing during summer period $250 toward WFR or WFA training (if you need it for this summer) Weeklong field based training On-going training and mentorship Amazing outdoor gear & equipment package

(Potential additional work during Montreat College Discovery Program) PRIMARY DUTIES • Lead weeklong backpacking trips during the summer under the supervision of the MYLES Logistics Coordinator •

Help students conduct research in Biology and Ecology

•

Assist with data collection for MYLES of Science research

•

Conduct student intake in a professional, clear, and organized way

•

Engage MYLES participants during down times

•

Pack and organize backpacking and citizen science equipment as well as pack MYLES van & trailer for summer programming

•

Serve as primary point of contact for trip participants in the field

•

Communicate with MYLES Director and Logistics

•

Coordinator as needs arise and in emergency situations

•

Uphold MYLES and Montreat College policies and procedures and apply safe practices

•

Organize and clean outdoor equipment between and after trips

•

Perform equipment maintenance and log activity

•

Perform wilderness first aid as needed

•

Attend staff meetings and trainings

ASSIST WITH • Assist with marketing of program during academic school year •

Possibly assist with presenting research findings at conference

•

Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS • Strong belief in providing a quality and safe outdoor learning experience to MYLES of Science participants •

Experience with outdoor recreation activities (primarily backpacking and hiking)

•

Strong interest in learning Biology, Ecology, and Natural Sciences lessons to teach to students

•

Experience with outdoor trips lasting seven days or more is a plus

•

Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (primarily Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Prezi)

•

High-quality written and oral communication skills, including the ability to understand and articulate policy and procedures

•

Excellent organizational skills

•

Ability to set and meet deadlines

•

Ability to prioritize and manage several projects at one time

•

Ability and desire to work collaboratively with others to accomplish goals

•

Ability to work in a fast paced environment and be flexible

•

Balance of a professional attitude while having fun

REQUIREMENTS • Fulfill duties for the Spring 2015 academic semester (attending monthly staff meetings and logistical planning sessions as well as assisting with optional marketing opportunities) •

Meet individually with supervisor weekly or bi-weekly

•

Attend meetings and trainings related to position

•

Be in good academic standing (maintain cumulative 2.50 GPA)

•

Successfully pass criminal background check

•

Sign a contract to fulfill job responsibilities by February 16th, 2015, commit to monthly meetings, and the summer of 2015 (June 7th-August 1st)

•

Possess current AHA, AHSI, or Red Cross CPR Certification by May 15th

•

Possess current WFA Certification, WFR preferred by May 15th
