Debutantes 2014

October 25, 2014 Dear Family, Friends, and Guests, Welcome to the R.O.Y.A.L. Miss Blue Revue Debutante ball of the Epsilon Rho Zeta chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. Thank you to all who have purchased tickets and advertisements, supported our fund raisers, and opened your homes for our social gatherings. We realize that we would not have made it to this day without you. Whatever part you played, the Debutantes appreciate your support. Thank you to all of our parents and extended family members for supporting us through this program and assisting with our preparations for the ball. A special thank you goes to our escorts and dance partners for learning to waltz with us even though you may not have liked it. Thank you to all of our Fairy Godmothers who were there to help whenever we needed it in preparation for this Ball. Finally, I thank the Blue Revue committee, our Archonette Advisors, workshop presenters and the Zeta Youth Auxiliary Directors for working with us, and for sharing your knowledge, encouragement and support. We learned many things in our workshops and it is information that we can use for many years to come. All of the Debutantes and the Blue Revue committee members have worked hard to make this evening memorable and enjoyable. We are so glad that you came and we hope that you enjoy the evening. Best Wishes, Arin Wilson

The History of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was founded January 16, 1920 at Howard University by five co-eds, Arizona Cleaver, Myrtle Tyler, Viola Tyler, Fannie Pettie and Pearl Neal. The organization was founded on the simple belief that sorority elitism and socializing should not overshadow the real mission for progressive organizations - to address societal mores, ills, prejudices, poverty, and health concerns of the day. These five women dared to depart from the traditional coalitions for black women and sought to establish a new organization predicated on the precepts of Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood and Finer Womanhood. Today, the sorority consists of over 100,000 women in more than 800 chapters in the United States and abroad. The sorority's national and local programs include endowment of its National Educational Foundation, the Stork's Nest Prenatal Program, Z-Hope - an empowerment program that aims to enrich the mind, body and soul of target populations, and supporting multiple affiliate organizations. Zeta chapters and auxiliary groups have given un-totaled hours of voluntary service to educate the public, assist youth provide scholarships, support organized charities and promote legislation for social and civic change. Since its inception, the sorority has chronicled a number of firsts. For example, Zeta Phi Beta was the first Greek Letter organization to charter a chapter in Africa (1948), to form adult and youth auxiliary groups, to centralize its operations in a National Headquarters, and to be constitutionally bound to a brother fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. The History of the Epsilon Rho Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. The Epsilon Rho Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was chartered in September 1955. In 1962, the chapter organized the Zeta Amicae of Wilmington, and the New Castle County Stork’s Nest opened its doors in 2002. In an effort to further community outreach efforts, Zeta CAN! – The Zeta Community Action Network was born, and in 2006, the Katherine B. Ross Scholarship was added to the chapter’s education portfolio. For over 50 years, the chapter has given un-totaled hours of voluntary service to educate the public, assist youth, provide

scholarships, support organized charities, and promote legislation for social and civic change. The membership is comprised of professional women from many walks of life. Chapter members hold Baccalaureate, Master’s, Doctoral and/or professional degrees in fields from Education, both secondary and higher, to finance, law, social work, corporate management and technology. This expertise allows the chapter to provide a myriad of service to the New Castle County area. Thus, the chapter continues to hold high the torch that was kindled at Howard University in Washington, DC on January 16, 1920. May the torch holding the light of Zeta burn eternally……

Zeta Amicae of Wilmington As early as 1940, graduate chapters of Zeta Phi Beta began to realize the importance of the prestige, good will and of cooperation women who, for various reasons, were not members of any Greek-letter organization. Under the administration of Soror Lullelia Harrison, the first Amicae chapter was organized in Omaha, Nebraska in 1947 making Zeta the first sorority in the National Pan-Hellenic Council to organize an auxiliary group. Zeta Amicae are affiliated through local graduate chapters. Today, these auxiliaries have rendered invaluable services to the sorority and their communities. They are located in areas wherever there are active chapters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Each local Amicae Auxiliary is a member of a state-wide Zeta Amicae Conference in which rules, regulations, policies and procedures apply to the state as a group. This structure is also applicable to Regional and National levels within the organization. These larger bodies provide an excellent forum for networking with Amicae from other auxiliary chapters, a chance to garner successful programming ideas, and stay current with your knowledge of information and activities on a broader scale. The ultimate value is that you develop relationships that last a lifetime. Amicae Auxiliaries conduct community service projects on an ongoing basis. Many times collaboration with Epsilon Rho Zeta Chapter. In addition, they participate in special observances of the sorority, and conduct projects or programs related

to the national programmatic thrusts. They are expected to participate in the activities that you help to plan and organize. Members are expected to support the organization financially through their membership. The organization exists because its members are committed to advancing the principles, values and standards for which it purports. This support is tangibly demonstrated by members paying dues in a timely manner and through support of fund raising activities.

Youth Auxiliary Groups of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. The mission of the youth auxiliaries of Zeta Phi Bet Sorority, Inc, is to provide a carefully designed program of activities that will enhance youth members through mind, body, and spirit as they work within their various communities to help others. In order to provide age specific programming, our Youth Auxiliaries are divided into 3 age groups. The Archonette Club is comprised of high school aged young ladies typically between the ages of 14-18. These young ladies demonstrate an interest in the goals and ideals of scholarship, sisterly love and community service. Members of the Amicette Club are young ladies between the ages of 9-13 years of age who are willing to strive toward the high ideals of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and who demonstrate potential for leadership and service to the community. The youngest members of the Youth groups are the Pearlettes. The Pearlettes are girls under the age of 9 who are mentored by the ladies of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., to become outstanding leaders in their communities. Each group is advised by at least 2 members of Epsilon Rho Zeta Chapter who have experience working with youth. The meetings consist of a variety of activities including: age specific workshops, group discussions, outings, and community service opportunities. The R.O.Y.A.L. Miss Blue Revue Debutante Mentor Program mission is to foster the educational goals of college-bound young women. The program is operated under the auspices of the Epsilon Rho Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., and the R.O.Y.A.L Miss Blue Revue Committee. The R.O.Y.A.L. Miss Blue Revue is a comprehensive mentoring program, focusing on etiquette, community ser-

vice, and college preparation. The goal of the R.O.Y.A.L. Miss Blue Revue program is to provide young ladies with the opportunity to be involved in educational and personal growth activities that can open doors for them as they transition into womanhood. The program is open to young women who are sophomores/juniors attending high school in the state of Delaware during the 2011-2012 school year. The R.O.Y.A.L. Miss Blue Revue Debutante Program will culminate with a Debutante Ball held in the fall of 2012.The R.O.Y.A.L. Miss Blue Revue Debutante Mentor Program is the capstone program of the youth auxiliary programs/clubs of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Epsilon Rho Zeta Chapter. Each R.O.Y.A.L. Miss Blue Revue program participant is assigned a mentor who is a member of Epsilon Rho Zeta Chapter. The role of the mentor is a vital component of the R.O.Y.A.L. Miss Blue Revue Debutante Program, as the goal of the program is to provide mentor-ship to young ladies. History of Blue Revue Blue Revue originated in the Kappa Zeta Chapter in 1933. Chapter founder, Dr. Helen Wilson Johnson and charter member Mildred Davis initiated the first Blue Revue and then introduced the idea at the Sorority's 1933 national convention. The idea was adopted as a national program and implemented by chapters of the sorority across the country. Blue Revue’s purpose is twofold. Primarily, Blue Revue is a conduit to promote higher education through scholarship and other financial resources. Secondly, but just as important, Blue Revue was established to encourage and inspire young ladies to uphold the admirable ideals of finer womanhood as well as cultivate and put into practice acceptable ways of social behavior.

“Normal is nothing more than a cycle on the washing machine.” Whoopie Goldberg Anu Naqi Cawthon is the daughter of Regina Anderson and Yusuf Cawthon. She attends William Penn High School in New Castle, Delaware where she is a senior. As a new resident to Delaware, by way of Georgia, her freshman year had gotten off to a rough start. She sought out various school clubs and organizations in an effort to meet new people. Anu found a club where the people were nice and welcoming and they celebrated differences in everyone. Although, initially she thought maybe this isn’t for me however, giving the meeting a chance, she soon realized it was for her. She met nice people who welcomed her with open arms. She learned about the prevalence of teen suicide and bullying, the increasing numbers of teens infected and affected by HIV and AIDS, and that homeless teens existed. Through the club, she found how she can be part of the solution. It was also through these meetings she was invited to participate in her first fashion show. At William Penn, some of her favorite classes were Drama I, II & III, as well as Spanish I, II, & III. Through all of her ups and downs of relocating and attending a new school, Anu has maintained a 3.5 GPA.

Anu aspires to be a fashion designer. After undergraduate school, her plan is to pursue a Master of Science degree in Fashion and apparel studies. In preparation for her future, Anu has been a wardrobe consultant and make-up artist for the up and coming singer & song writer Nadjah Nicole. A splash of her style has been showcased at Nadjah’s shows and photos posted on her online marketing social medias. Her goal is to own a boutique that sells her signature clothing line and accessories. Her fashion inspirations are Lisa Bonet, Posh Spice (From the Spice girls) and Miley Cyrus. Anu attributes her inspiration to be a business owner to her grandparents who have successful business owners for the past 28 years.

Outside of school, Anu is a member of Bethel AME Church in Wilmington, Delaware. Through her membership in the Zeta Archonette program, Anu has been able to serve her in many ways. She has volunteered to serve in the following activities: Adopt a highway, Habitat for Humanity, Tatsapod Mission House for Women, UNICEF gift wrapping at Christiana Mall, and RED Kettle Bell Ringing for the Salvation Army Christmas Campaign.

Anu’s Debutante mentor is Mrs. Melinda Haley. Please join Melinda, Anu’s parents and all her family and friends in congratulating this creative young woman, Anu Naqi Cawthon, as the ladies of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated proudly present her to you.

ANU, Where has the time gone? I can remember like it was yesterday when you were 5 years old; going to the girls and boys club and here you are preparing to graduate High School! I know when I decided to move you and your sister to Delaware, it was rough and our future looked vague but to God be the Glory for ordering our footsteps. As I listened and trusted that little voice inside of me, He has opened every door to get us to where we had only hoped. YOU! My first born! (Whew! I’m not gon cry…) you were a good baby, a fun kid and now a beautifully gifted young woman. I don’t feel the need to remind you of what I taught you because you’ve always carried yourself with dignity and grace up to this point as I know you will continue that disposition going forward. You have always been in my thoughts and prayers therefore, making me excited about your future! The word says in Jeremiah 29: 11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” No matter where you are or what you choose to do in life, pray about everything, keep your family close and know that I am and will always be your number Fan! I love you and God bless you. Always, Mom

Dear Anu, We are having a hard time believing that you are a big bright eyed baby girl is making her debut into society. We are beaming with pride for a sweet, beautiful, and gifted young lady you have become. Just remember to keep God first and you will always walk in his light. We love you dearly,

Anu, I have no doubt in my mind that the world will know your name. Don’t be afraid of success and all it has to offer. Be afraid of not pushing yourself to get there! Love you!!! Nadjah Nicole

Myia, From your cousins Deacon Louise Shirley, Mr. Robert Sr., Mr. Robert Jr. & Pastor Robin L. HamptonWe are very proud of you. Always remember never to measure the wealth by the things you have, but by the way you live your life, and maintaining the attitude of a joyful soul. Wealth is measured by the things you have achieved through the grace and mercy of God for which money could not buy or any person can ever challenge you and try to stripe from you. Becoming a new person and experiencing all the wonderful achievements that God has blessed you to achieve, always remain grateful, focused, thankful and humble these attributes will take you far in life. In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson “Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but rising up every time we fall. Always remember that nothing beats a failure but a try! Congratulations! From the Hampton Family!
