Joshua’s road to Rio A Community Lifeline By Wendy Maddocks

Gordonvale has produced many sporting champions over the years but no one more courageous than our very own Joshua Lush. Joshua is an Athlete with Disabilities with an intellectual impairment who struggles with the concepts of everyday living and school. Joshua has found a passion for athletics and over the last 2 years has represented his school at State and National level. Joshua’s main events are the 100m, 200m, long jump, shot put, discus and the 800m. Joshua also competes at little athletics for Cairns. As an Athlete with a Disability a lot of his competitions are held in Brisbane or Melbourne. Joshua has recently received an invitation to the 2012 Athlete with Disabilities Junior Championships

(Road to Rio) to be held in Canberra in November. This is where Joshua gets to start his dream of one day representing his country at the Olympics in 2016. Last year Joshua travelled to Darwin for the national athletics titles where he achieved 8 gold and 2 silver medals, this was in addition to his 5 gold and 1 silver at State level and the setting of 5 Athletes with Disabilities state records in the under 14 age group which was 2 years above his age. Joshua has been marked for International duties in the next few years. In April this year Joshua returned from the Brisbane Athlete with Disabilities State Games where he won 4 gold and 1 silver in his events as an U16, 4 years above his age group. But the big news for Joshua was his selection as 1 of 4 Qld track and field athletes to compete in Special Olympics National Games in Newcastle in December. Joshua also made the QLD team for Primary School Cross Country, unfortunately because of cost to get him to Adelaide Joshua could not go to the Nationals. Last year the cost for Joshua to travel to the respective athletics carnivals was in excess of $18,000. Joshua’s goal is to represent Australia at the 2016 Olympic games in Rio. Mulgrave News has long been a supporter and follower of Joshua’s achievements. We are putting a plea out there to the residents of Gordonvale to help Joshua achieve his dream of competing in the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016. The Mulgrave Mill, Ashlee Jones homes and the Mulgrave News have all been sponsors of Joshua and we are looking for other small businesses and residents of Gordonvale to help him along. Any donations can be sent to Joshua Lush c/o Mulgrave News. PO Box 544, Gordonvale Qld 4865. Good luck with achieving your dreams Joshua.

For approximately nine years, the Gordonvale Lifeline Op Shop has been a browsing destination for the community. It is staffed by twelve friendly volunteers who thank the local community for their generosity and support and greatly appreciate receiving the donations of clothing which is laundered beforehand. I recently headed for Lifeline in anticipation of an enjoyable cruise around the shelves and almost dived for cover as three boxes of spoons, knives and forks I had previously been rummaging through, crashed to the floor. The noise was loud enough to shatter shopfront windows up and down Norman Street. And all I wanted was one little knife! Thinking I was responsible for the mess, I apologized and looked around for an escape route but then had to quickly sit down because my ears were ringing so badly I felt dizzy, due to the amplified noise clanging through the two hearing aids I was wearing. The manageress, Anne MacMahon, assuring me that no damage had been done, set about picking up the gleaming piles of cutlery and it was then that the real culprit was discovered. The cutlery box shelf was not securely attached to its supports and so any movement of the boxes practically ensured the shelf would topple over. Lack of funds puts minor repairs and maintenance on the bottom of the list and the staff have to make-do with a number of unstable shelves and cupboards. Wouldn’t it be a nice if a community minded local tradesman or handy man donated his time to undertake these repairs for this service which gives so much to our community? Not forgetting the relief this would provide a hard of hearing senior citizen who has promised never to go near the crockery shelves.

Gordonvale Childcare Local Business Guide Community Kids Gordonvale Childcare and Education Centre believe in a higher standard of care for children in areas of education, health and safety. With the implementation of The National Quality Framework, exciting new changes have been put in place to enhance the quality of education. Extra-curricular activities give young children the opportunity to socialise and develop motor skills. Monthly visits from ‘The Cheeky Monkey Club’ incorporate mime, singing, movement to music, child participation and loads of fun. ‘Zoo to You’ allows children to see, touch and learn about our native animals. These groups visit Gordonvale on a monthly basis and are an innovative approach to enrich the education of children in a fun way. Children have accelerated learning abilities during their early years than at any other time, which is why Gordonvale Childcare and Education Centre aims to provide detailed, and specific educational programs, resources and materials to help evolve children’s learning abilities. The centre has a Government approved Kindergarten program taught by a Bachelor qualified teacher, before and after school care and an exciting vacation care program. Centre Director Heather Comer explains,“It is tremendously rewarding to see children grow, learn and achieve so much in these first few years of life. It leaves us feeling we are fulfilling the role of educator and carer and keeps us strong, focused and enthusiastic about what we do.” For more information or enrolments, please contact Gordonvale Childcare and Education Centre on 4056 6777or visit www.communitykids.com.au

The Gordonvale fire of 1925 Home visits

In the early hours of the morning of December 28th 1925, a terrible fire broke out in the Barbering and Tobacconist business owned by Mr Mc Cloy.

across the railway and park to the scene of the fire. The suction gas plant at the mill was also used to pump water from the river to top up the supply.

The business was situated in the Commercial Hotel building, which is now named the Riverstone Hotel. Mr. C.Butler’s Mart, T Bryce & Sons Department Store and Mr Bryce’s residence were also destroyed.

Had it not been for the help of the Mulgrave Mill employees, the offices of Venables and Cropiana’s and the corner hotel (now the Ye Old Gordonvale Hotel) would have been destroyed as well.

A wind change saved the Nelson Theatre, which is where the bakery is now.

There were many insurance claims presented to the relevant insurance companies, but Mr Bryce of T. Bryce & Sons Dept Stores had by far the largest loss of approximately 7000 pounds.

A lodger of an adjoining premise notified the residents of the Commercial hotel and they escaped only with the pyjamas they were wearing. The fire raged quickly through the wooden buildings and destroyed most of the block fronting Norman Street. The Cairns Fire Brigade was called and they connected their hose to the Mulgrave Central Mill’s reservoir which had a capacity of 113,000 gallons. The mill workers used a gas powered pump to refill the fire brigade’s water tanks and also replaced the fuel needed for the fire brigade’s pump. Half a mile of hose was used to carry the water

The total loss for the town was in the vicinity 20,000 pounds, an appalling blow to Gordonvale. There was also damage done to the telegraph wires, although the Morse and Townsville wires were repaired by 10:30am that morning. The heat from the fire was so intense, that it burnt the posts that fenced the park on the other side of the road. In summary, police had reason to believe that the fire was started under suspicious circumstances and have taken procession of a number of articles which may be used as evidence in an inquiry.

Robyn’s Bowen Therapy and Emmett Technique are all about relieving pain and discomfort from head to toe. Treatments are normally carried out at 90 Riverstone Road Gordonvale at Robyn’s clinic. Also, if your pain and discomfort restricts you from moving, thus unable to get in and out of a vehicle, a treatment at your home may be organized. Robyn is also available to do treatments in the hospital or retirement centre by request. For any further information on this service please phone Robyn John on 07 4056 3656/0431 303 453. Annual bullride A full house attended the 2012 running of the annual Fahlstrom Scaffolding & Pyramid Polocrosse Bullride which was held at the Pyramid Polocrosse Grounds under lights. A crowd of about 2000 adults and children of all ages enjoyed a night of entertainment, excitement and fun! Cowboys young and old together with the bullfighting clowns put on a spectacular display. In a complete contrast to the 2011 event the weather was perfect and the event was a huge success for the club. This is the major fundraiser of the year for the polocrosse and a big thank you goes out to all that attended and especially our sponsors, Fahlstrom Scaffolding, City N Country Clothing, Gary Riches Builders, Great Northern Hotel and Tuff Tyres Gordonvale.

CALTEX GORDONVALE 24hrs 7 DAYS PHONE 4056 6027

Welcome to this month's industry real estate update. Whilst we were all hoping that the State Government would increase the First Home Owner's Grant (FHOG), unfortunately the opposite has occurred and they are deleting it as of the 11th October if you are purchasing an existing property. The good news is that, in order to stimulate the slow construction industry, the Government is offering First Home Owners $15,000 to build a new home or buy one that has never been lived in before. The proof will be in the pudding as to whether this strategy works long term, however I have been run off my feet with blocks of land going under contract. I attended an REIQ Industry Zone Seminar this month when several speakers outlined many changes coming our way as the State Government moves to make Contracts simpler to execute and, happily, we will see less paperwork in the future. For more information on any of these matters or simply advice on your own circumstances, please give me a confidential call on 0488 071 007.

Welcome Fr Jude Suburbs Jnr. Rugby After two years without a priest in residence, St Michael’s Catholic Parish was very pleased to welcome Fr Jude Ronayne-Ford to Gordonvale on Sunday 2 September. Fr Jude, a Franciscan Priest, has hit the ground running by celebrating a First Communion mass only one week after his arrival. Fifteen Year 4 students drawn from St Michael’s Catholic Primary School and Gordonvale State School made their First Communion on Sunday the 9th of September in front of a church packed with family members and parishioners. Fr Jude welcomed the children as they moved more fully into their church as they and the rest of the parish welcomed him to their community. Fr Jude has come to St Michael’s after a year of service in the Torres Strait and decades of service in Papua New Guinea. While serving his new parish in Gordonvale, he will continue to work with Torres Strait Islanders and Papuans in the Cairns Region.

Suburbs 2012 Junior Rugby League season came to a close this year with a presentation night held at the club house last month. Many of the players and officials were recognised for their fantastic efforts throughout 2012 and previous years. No one was more deserving in 2012 than Jason and Bernie Joinbee who were made life members of the club. Both Jason and Bernie have been incredible role models for many junior players over many years both through playing, coaching and managing and have produce some very promising talent. This year saw a new award added to the large list of awards. This award saw Queensland and Australian Rugby League player Nate Miles return to where it all started for him. Nate presented the Most promising player award for 2012 to under 14 player Ethan Matheson. In 2012 Ethan shared the captaincy role of the under 14s and also represented Cairns. Another award commenced this year was the Young Women in Junior Rugby League Award. This award was sponsored by Terry and Beatrice Lucas and was won by Sharlie Nolan-Mundrady. For the second year in a row the Junior referee of the year was awarded to Robert Stoddard Jnr. Other awards included MiniPlayer of the Year- Will Thomson (U9), Mod Player of the year-Nick Marino (U11), Club Player of the Year- Marcus Borgo (U/12), Most Consistent Club Player- Ryan O’neill (U12), Life Player- Reece Coutts (U16). Thanks this year go to all the sponsors, there are too many to name in the article, but without you the club would struggle. The biggest thank you of course goes to the parents of the children involved.

Fr Jude Ronayne-Ford, newly appointed Catholic Priest for St Michael’s Parish, Gordonvale, stands with the Fifteen Year 4 students who celebrated their First Communion with him on 9 September.
