GORDONVALE CAROLS IN THE PARK by JESS pieper Christmas is upon us again and this year’s Gordonvale Chamber of Commerce and Gordonvale Traders will be hosting its annual Carols in the Park. The event will be held in Norman Park in Gordonvale on Friday 9th of December with Rachel Bradley as the master of ceremonies. The night kicks off at 5pm with a number of small markets stores and food stalls including The Gordonvale Lions food van, Gordonvale Scouts sausage sizzle and the Gordonvale Hospital Auxiliary with tea and cakes. Don’t forget to bring the kids along with the Terry Doyle Family Fun Show starting at 5.30pm which will include face painting and balloon twisting. If you are coming along just for the Carols, the St. Michael’s Choir kicks off proceedings at 6pm and then the talented Soul Song which comprises of musicians from Southern Cairns Suburbs starts at 6.30pm. Light candles and glow sticks will be available for purchase from the Gordonvale Chamber of Commerce stall in the main area. These are a great alternative to a naked flame and parents are reminded that naked flames and smoking are not permitted due to safety

concerns. Lights and Sirens will be blaring when Santa arrives at 8.20pm by Fire Truck with the help from the staff at the Gordonvale Fire Station. Santa always arrives with goodies and will giving away lollies to the children. For Mums and Dads there will be a raffle draw at 8.30 pm with lots to win including 5 x $250 Hampers supplied by Cornett’s Supa IGA and 5 x $100 cash giveaways. The main prize of the night is $500 cash which doubles to $1000 if the winner is present at the event. To enter all you have to do is shop locally in Gordonvale at participating stores and with every purchase over $5 you will receive an entry form. Place your form in the barrel outside the Newsagency for a chance to win one of these great prizes. NEW YEAR’S EVE
by Jess pieper Matt Hagan from Cairns Snake Catchers got a big surprise when he received a text message and photo from a newly arrived Gordonvale resident. The message included a photo of a snake that he wanted identified. The snake had already been caught and had been placed in a bucket. The person who caught the snake had no idea what sort of snake species it was. When Matt saw the photo he immediately identified it as a Death Adder. Matts’ main concern then was to ascertain if anyone had come into contact with the snake which fortunately in this instance no one had. When Matt told the resident that the snake was a Death Adder and highly venomous they requested Matt to come around straight away for removal and relocation of the snake. It is unusual for Cairns Snake Catchers to catch Death Adders as they make up approximately 1% of their catches. Gordonvale does however have a diverse range of both venomous and non-venomous snakes and this is due to the differing geographical features around the area including cane fields, mountain ranges and river systems. Although the location of the Death Adder is quite rare there appears to be larger numbers in the suburbs of Gordonvale and Clifton Beach. There are also large numbers of Red Bellied Black Snakes in the Gordonvale area, mainly around Little Mulgrave. These snakes are also venomous and should be left alone or contact a professional for removal. Matt Hagan said that most of the relocations around Gordonvale are large scrub pythons and some of these can be up to 5 metres in length. Snakes are a lot more active in the warmer months and will be seen more frequently as the temperature rises. Cairns Snakes Catchers advice is that if you encounter a snake in your house or yard it is best that you leave it alone, and contact an experienced snake catcher. The vast majority of snake bites occur when people try to kill or catch a snake. If you need a snake relocated, it is best to monitor it closely from a safe distance and call your local snake catcher.

Judo receive funds and bring home medals Curtis Pitt recently congratulated the Cairns Southside Judo Club on receiving $13,690 from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund. The club will use the funds to install a new sprung floor and purchase safety mats for their Gordonvale based club. Community based, not-forprofit organisations can apply for grants from $500 to $35,000. The fund offers four rounds per year. In October, four members from Cairns Southside Judo Club along with their Sensei attended the Australian Kodokan Judo Association (AKJA) National Championships at Wollongong in NSW. The club had a successful trip bringing home two gold, one silver and one bronze medal. One of the clubs young members Hein, was also selected as an outstanding competitor on the day and won a Judo suit from one of the tournaments major sponsors Martial Arts Tatami.Results from the championships provided by Luke Ronlund – Sensei/Teacher, Cairns Southside Judo Club: • 7 year old Anneliese had 3 bouts in a mixed gender Under 7 yrs Under 23kg division to place 2nd. Anneliese weighted in at just 19.5 kg so her performance was all the more impressive being both mixed gender as well as being the lightest competitor in her division. • 9 yr old Cade had 4 bouts in the Boys U 9 yrs Under 36kg division to place 1st. On his way to winning gold, Cade won against a much more experienced young brown belt who was last years 2015 AKJA silver medallist and a local favourite. Cades throw for ippon was one of the tournaments finest. • 11 yr old Hein had 4 bouts in the Boys U11 yrs Under 39kg to place 1st. Hein won all his bouts by Ippon (full point), predominantly with throws. Many interstate coaches made positive comments on his standard of judo which was re-enforced with his additional outstanding participation award from the Tournament sponsors. • 12 year old Esa had 2 bouts in the Boys U13 yrs Under 40kg division to place 3rd. Weighing in at just 35 kg, Esa was both younger and significantly lighter than his opponents. He gave his absolute best and then some. With age and weight in mind, I believe his participation was exceptional.

NECK, JAW AND MORE Do you feel pain when you eat, yawn, laugh or talk? Jaw soreness and pain with mouth movement is not normal. It means there is a problem with the jaw joints or muscles. Symptoms include clicking, cracking and popping, headaches, ear discomfort, and changes in the way the teeth come together. The jaw joints are also known as the temporomandibular joints (TMJ). They connect with your jaw muscles, ligaments, tendons, bones and teeth. All are important for normal mouth opening, eating and talking. Problems that affect jaw joints and
muscles, called temporomandibular disorders (TMD), can have a variety of causes. Even simple activities, which most of us do not think about, can create jaw discomfort. These are not a part of normal jaw movement during the day, and include tooth clenching, fingernail biting and gum chewing. Clenching or grinding the teeth, wear due to aging, or a bad bite when the teeth do not align well can all cause TMD. More serious TMD symptoms can develop after motor vehicle collisions and sports injuries. Neck pain is bad enough; throw in jaw pain and it’s like adding insult to injury! Neck and jaw pain frequently appear together because the muscles from the neck run up into the lower jaw. Tightness in either area affects the other, so your jaw pain can literally become a neck. LEST WE FORGET by JESS pieper At 5am on 11 November 1918, three German government representatives accepted the Armistice terms presented to them by an allied commander, General Foch of the French Army. The demands of the Armistice included the withdrawal of German forces to the east bank of the Rhine within 30 days, immediate cessation of warfare and the surrender of the German fleet and all heavy guns with no further negotiations until the signing of the peace treaty. The armistice became effective at 11am the same day, and as the guns fell silent on the Western Front in France and Belgium, four years of hostilities ended. The cease-fire was made permanent the following year when members of the Commonwealth and the League of Nations signed the Treaty of Versailles. People across the world celebrated the war's end. However celebrations were tempered by thoughts of the enormous suffering and loss of life resulting from the War.
As in previous years the Gordonvale community braved the heat with Remembrance Day commemorations being held at the cenotaph in Norman Park. Dave Chalk commenced the proceedings with the first address followed by the community wreath laying at the foot of the memorial. All local Gordonvale schools were involved with about 100 students attending to pay their respects. Many of the students were wearing poppies and some donned their ancestor’s medals to pay tribute to the fallen. The red remembrance poppy has become a familiar emblem of Remembrance Day thanks to the poem “In Flanders Fields.” These poppies bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders in World War I and their brilliant red colour became a symbol for the blood spilled in the war. There was also a purple poppy presented in remembrance of all the animals that have fallen in action. The Remembrance Day ceremony ended with refreshments at the Gordonvale RSL for the Veterans and the community. Gordonvale never fails to deliver on these very important days.

START THE NEW YEAR WITH GOOD STUDY HABITS
TAKING ENROLMENTS NOW FOR 2016 The Gordonvale Library celebrated with a morning tea and a cake on Friday the 11th of November for its closure due to refurbishments. The 62-year-old Gordonvale Library building will undergo a major refurbishment from next month to meet the growing needs of the community. The $623,000 upgrade of the Norman Street building, which doubles as a Council customer service centre, will deliver a more modern, efficient, and contemporary library facility and services to the Gordonvale community. The internal renovation will include the addition of a small meeting room, installation of self-serve facilities, upgraded technology and improved amenities and security. The library opened on 19 February 1954, replacing the old School of Arts, which was constructed in 1900. At the time, it was the main library for Mulgrave Shire Council and consisted of two outdoor reading rooms – one for adults and one for children. In 1996, a

Council Customer Service Office, meeting room and Councillor Office were added but improvements to the library itself were not included. The library receives around 65,000 visitors a year and stocks more than 7500 items. A full closure is required for the refurbishment, starting on Friday 11 November. The library is expected to reopen in early March 2017. There will be a library kiosk available at the Gordonvale Community hub, Monday to Friday 14th-25th of November 10 am–6 pm (closed for lunch). This will be available for collection of holds and returns only. An afterhours returns box will also be available at the front of the community hub.

Local Mens Sheds receive early Christmas bonus The Gordonvale and Edmonton Men’s Sheds have received a welcome preChristmas boost, in the form of $11,000 in funding from the Turnbull Government. Government Senator Ian Macdonald said the groups were well deserving of this muchneeded funding boost, with Gordonvale Mens Shed receiving $5,000, and Edmonton Mens Shed receiving $6,000. “The Gordonvale and Edmonton Mens Sheds do a terrific job in not only providing a range of activities and support for their members, they also play a significant role in building community capacity, which is so important in regional areas,” Senator Macdonald said. Senator Macdonald said Mens Sheds were an increasingly popular way for men to connect with their community – whether through a building project, a first aid workshop or a health awareness project. – that’s why I am such a huge fan of the concept,” Senator Macdonald said. “There are a range of activities men can take part in, and that is just one of many reasons why I am such a big fan of the concept.” The grants support the purchase of tools, equipment, community projects, training, building maintenance and development, and health improvement activities. Across the Kennedy electorate, Mens Sheds shared in more than $17,000 in this latest grants round, part of $400,000 in national funding to be distributed to 93 Men’s Sheds across the country.

The Australian Government has provided $5.1million (from 2016-17 to 2018-19) to the Australian Men’s Sheds Association (AMSA) to provide support and resources to new and existing Men’s Sheds, and to manage the National Shed Development Programme. Picasso! By, Charlotte 5B Currently, my class and I are studying Pablo Picasso and one of his pieces, l’Acrobat for art class. We are remaking his art with our own touch. We call ours, ‘Les Danseur de Hip-hop’. To make this particular collage, we traced limbs from different Hip-hop dancer silhouettes. Then, we cut it out and glued it onto a background that we painted to make a new, abstract dancer. I enjoyed the process of making this and I am happy with my personal outcome because it is unusual and cool. Thanks to Miss Newman for teaching my class and I about Pablo Picasso.

(Information supplied by Mulgrave Settlers Museum) Joe Ash was a travelling salesman for the Brisbane firm of Allan and Stark. He visited Gordonvale once a year in the 1920’s as part of his territory, which must have included most of Queensland. He was what we used to call a “Flash Dresser”, very natty and neat. There was a Sample Room at the Central Hotel where Ash and other commercial travellers could show their wares to business houses and the general public. Later, Mrs Wren built a Sample Room at her house in Norman Street. Joe Ash would arrive by train with 15 big wicker baskets. Joe Cannon would back his dray into the gutter, which meant that the tailgate of the dray was only then 8 to 10 inches above the footpath. He would make up a timber ramp up to the back of the dray so the baskets could be wheeled down and into the sample room. Joe Ash took two or three days to put the sample room in display order and then he would be ready for business for the next two or three weeks. The townswomen and particularly the farmers’ wives would come in and order their yearly supplies of linen and that type of materials. Ash would put their orders down in a leather bound day book and put in an hour or two every night in his room at the Queens Hotel reentering the day’s entries in a huge order book. At the end of his stay Joe Cannon would bring the horse and dray back, rebuild the ramp, load up the 15 baskets and cart them back to the train to send Ash on his way to the next town. The Mulgrave Settlers Museum will be closing at 2pm on Saturday 10th December and re-opening on Monday 23rd January 2017 at 10:00am. Merry Christmas and happy New Year!

November into December has been a busy time for the Gordonvale Men’s Shed. Mid November the organisation finalised all the paperwork that will eventually lead to the signing of a 10-year lease for the Highleigh Road property. It is hoped that Santa will drop the lease off as an early Christmas present. A recent grant through the Australian Men’s Shed Association will provide tables and chairs, an urn, fridge and freezer for ‘THE SHACK’. Members hope to establish a homely feel in the house that will be used for meetings and other activities such as stained glass and framing. ‘THE SHOP’, or workshop space, will take a bit longer to establish. The Gordonvale Mens shed would also like to say thanks to Cazaly’s Community Fund for a donation as it has allowed the organisation to secure, dismantled and deliver on-site a display shed kit from a local shed supplier that is moving location. Initial advice given to members suggested it could take up to four years to get a functional Men’s Shed. And it became a challenge to get it sooner. The Gordonvale Mens Shed is still on the lookout for machinery to put into the workshop space.
