Future Site For Health and Sporting Precinct by JESS pieper A site has recently been purchased by Queensland Health for a future health facility on the southside of Cairns to service areas including Gordonvale and surrounds. The 5.2ha property is opposite the Edmonton PCYC adjoining Sugarworld Shopping centre on Walker Road Edmonton and reportedly cost 6 million dollars. The area south of Cairns is expected to be home to more than 60 000 people over the next 10 years and the establishment of a health facility is of high priority. Curtis Pitt said, “Since being first elected in 2009, I've pushed for the further development of health facilities in the growing Southern Corridor of Cairns. So as the local MP and Treasurer, I'm thrilled that the purchase of this land has finally been announced. Until this new land purchase was locked in, I've been unable to discuss the next steps at Edmonton. In the lead-up to this year's State Budget I allocated $230 million for additional health infrastructure to include the development of a new Health Precinct for the southern corridor, as well as other projects in the Far North like Atherton Hospital and Thursday Island Hospital. This parcel of land is strategically located across the road from Edmonton PCYC (which of course doubles as a cyclone shelter and has gym facilities that may assist with rehabilitation) and the Balance! Healthcare Pty Ltd GP Superclinic which already offers a range of health services.

This site has most of the same characteristics that were needed when the original southern health land was acquired. It's on the western side of the highway, has good flood immunity, it's near where people live, go to school and do their shopping. And a new Walker Road health facility will provide a backup option during a natural disaster, with room for a helipad in the precinct. The purchase of this land goes towards enhancing the southside of Cairns with the construction currently underway of the Edmonton sporting precinct.”

This facility is expected to have many facilities including • 5 diamond fields to service baseball and softball • 4 oval fields (2 senior, 2 junior) to accommodate vigoro, cricket, AFL and hockey (1 junior at School) • 2 rectangular fields to service football (soccer), touch and oztag • 2 multi-purpose amenities hubs (possible future shared clubhouse) + small toilet/ storage hub • Outdoor multi-purpose courts • Recreational elements - exercise & play, picnic & seating, pedestrian & cycling infrastructure, and arts & cultural installations • Parking, traffic and landscaping.

Gordonvale Library Closure Staff at the Gordonvale library would like to formally announce that the Gordonvale Library will be closing for refurbishment on 11th November and reopening hopefully in early March 2017. Gordonvale Library was opened in its current location by the then Mulgrave Shire Council on 19 February 1954. The building was purchased by the council three years earlier and the interior was remodelled for library purposes. This included two outdoor reading rooms – one for adults and the other for children. Prior to moving into the current premises, the library operated from the original School of Arts building at the corner of Norman and Cannon Streets. Gordonvale Library now boasts a collection of about 9500 items, with access to the full Cairns Libraries catalogue of more than 200,000 items.

Gordonvale Pony Club Exceeds at State Equestrian Championships by Jess pieper

On the 28th of September 8 girls from the Cairns region travelled to Oakey to take part in the state Equestrian Championships of Gymkhana, Sporting, Campdrafting and Mounted Games. The achievements of all these girls are remarkable their dedication to their sport and their animals is second to none. Traveling 3 days to get there, resting and feeding horses along the way is no easy task and takes considerable planning and dedication. It is also noted that five of these girls (Sharni Macor, Ashleigh Fahlstrom, Aimee Hind, Shakyla Pedrola and Bianca Pedrola) are members of the local Gordonvale Pony Club. The club could not be any prouder of the girls achievement’s with Ashleigh coming home 1st in the state for the gymkhana and 4th in the sporting, Sharni coming 6th overall in the gymkhana, Lyndsey Elms- Harding (Edmonton PC) 2nd in the gymkhana, the other girls placing very highly in the rankings. All girls were in the mounted games team and together ranked 5th, thanks to the coaching skills of Sharni Macor. With over 50 people in each group it is not an easy task to get to the top, the elusive prize of a rug for your horse and a medallion for the rider hardly seems worth it to some but for these girls it is the ultimate prize. It is testament to their dedication to their horses and their sport and highlights the bond between rider and horse. The Gordonvale Pony Club has more than doubled in the past year and has become the biggest club in the region with over 60 members. On Saturday and Sunday the 29th and 30th of October the club will be holding the end of year zone 18 Gymkhana and sporting days where all clubs from the region will go down to the Pyramid Polocrosse grounds to celebrate the end of year with a trophy weekend, with the talent being so strong in the Far North we are looking at some very fierce competition.

This year, C&K Gordonvale Community Kindergarten were grateful to be one of the recipients of the Ye Olde Gordonvale Pub’s Goose Raffle. With the ever-present ‘Storky’ helping with the selling of tickets each week, funds raised totalled $1961.66. The kindy was recently presented with a cheque for this amount, already putting it to good use with plans to purchase some replacement play equipment and replenishment of the kindy sandpit. Earlier this year, with the help of the volunteer Parent Management Committee, the kindy successfully applied for a SunSmart Shade Creation Grant from the Cancer Council. This money went towards erecting a large shade sail over their playground extension, creating more shade for morning and afternoon play. The committee have also organised the purchase of iPads for the staff and children this year. These will be used, along with their SmartBoard, to introduce the children to the technology they will see in their Prep year, and assist the staff with their daily programming. C&K Gordonvale Community Kindergarten is located at 69 Moller Street. First opened in

1971, it was built by the Gordonvale community after seeing a need for quality early childhood education in the area. It’s large outdoor play spaces and shady playground encourages children to get active and learn through play and engagement with nature. Following C&K’s Building Waterfalls Curriculum, children in the year before they start school, learn through a play-based program to problem solve, reason, negotiate, develop language, physical skills and imaginative play. A survey of this year’s families found that the large outside play spaces, friendly staff and positive feedback from friends and family had attracted them to the centre. The kindy currently has limited places available for 2017, if you are interested in enrolling your child or learning more about kindy please call 4056 3301.

Red Cross Gordonvale In 2016, the Gordonvale Red Cross has made Samaritan’s Purse – Operation Christmas Child, their charity of choice to assist in the lead up to Christmas giving. We recently donated items that had been both bought and hand-made by our members. Samaritan’s Purse is a non-profit, Christian organisation providing emergency relief and development assistance to suffering people around the world. Samaritan’s Purse is meeting the physical needs of victims of war, famine, natural disaster, poverty and disease with the aim of demonstrating God’s love and sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ. The aid and assistance are given without regard to the race, creed, gender, religion, or ethnicity of the beneficiaries. Operation Christmas Child has been voluntarily organised and run in Gordonvale by Sherryl and Owen Walker for over 10 years. Together, they have tirelessly collated, collected and donated toward thousands of these shoeboxes. The generosity of like-minded volunteers and donors within the community has made Operation Christmas Child an overwhelmingly successful part of their lives. Items that are able to be put into the shoeboxes must be NEW and can include: ! Something to wear – shirt, shorts, underwear, hat ! Something to play with – tennis ball, marbles, cars, skip-rope, finger puppets, musical instruments ! Something for school – exercise book, pencils/case, chalk, eraser, pens, note pads ! Something to love – teddy bear, doll, soft toy ! Something special – carry bag, craft kits, wind up torch, necklaces, bangles, jig saw puzzle, stickers ! Something for personal hygiene – soap/washer, toothbrush, comb, hairbrush, hair clips, scrunchy. Items that leak or melt cannot be donated - toothpaste, shampoo, plasticine/playdough, bubbles. If you wish to assist in such a worthwhile and giving experience, you can drop your new items into Sherryl and Owen at 32 Riverstone Road, Gordonvale or give them a call on 4056 3651 or 0408 608 022, to discuss becoming a volunteer on their 'boxing' days. We wish Samaritan’s Purse – Operation Christmas Child ongoing success in gathering shoeboxes for the children of the world, delivering several million each year. These gifts bring smiles and laughter to little ones who have known far too much pain and sorrow in their young lives. Please give generously so that others may know we care about them.

The Timber Industry in the Mulgrave Valley By the late Barron Baird (Information supplied by Mulgrave Settlers Museum) My great grandfather, William Saunders Alley was the skipper of a boat that hauled timber in the Barron River in 1876. In 1877 when the timber was cut out around the Barron, they shifted out to where Gordonvale is now located. It took William Saunders Alley, his son George and his daughter and son-in-law Sarah and Dick Blackwell three weeks with their bullock teams to get from the upper reaches of the Barron River to a place now known as Riverstone. George Alley started timber carting from Riverstone with a bullock wagon to a place now known as Redbank and a nearby loading ramp known as Alley’s landing. He also carted to Swallow and Ariel’s landing further down the Inlet. They would tip the logs into the Inlet and when they had enough, they would raft it down through the Inlet to the Cairns wharves where it was picked up by the larger boats and shipped south. The tableland supplied a lot of timber once the railway line went through. Some of the logs were so large; they had to split them so they would get through the railway line tunnels, which only had a clearance of 17 feet. Down on the coast around the Mulgrave, the bullock teams were the method of transport. Two of the bullockies were Archie Lock and Alf Baker.

The case of the stingless bees!

Lock and Baker pulled timber from up the Little Mulgrave, but in the 1920’s a man called Molloy came along and he changed the complexity of it. He had a big motor lorry and would come in and out in a couple of hours with the load. The timber men unloaded the timber in front of old Bob Chimes’ place which was near a triangle, where they turned the railway engine around. Then gradually as the industry expanded, they carted the timber by lorry directly to the sawmill at Perfume Creek. In the latter stages, after the Tablelands had been cut over once, a veneer mill was started. The timber men went back and dug up all the walnut and maple stumps and got the flanges from them and that opened a new industry on the tablelands for several years. Most of the teams on the coast used horses, whereas on the tablelands, bullock teams were used. Alf Baker took his horse team out to Middle and Pine Creek and pulled timber down Pine Creek Road. He brought it down from the mountain by bobtail, which was a two-wheel arrangement. It was hooked on to the front end of the log to stop the nose of the log from digging in. With a bob-tail, only three parts of the log would be dragging. Logs for overseas were placed at the wharves near where the present sugar terminal now stands. The logs were loaded onto the ships with cranes and the ships own loading gear. As for the wharves themselves, it was said that a lot of the piles came from the Mulgrave and were hauled by a horse team owned by Ben Mac Laughlin who hauled a lot of timber hereabouts earlier on.

By Lila (Year 4) Have you heard of native stingless bees? Well I am studying them and found out a lot of amazing things. Some may ask ‘What’s so important about native bees?’ Bees are responsible for pollinating 70% of Australian crops and flowers. When Charles Darwin was studying native bees, and he once said ‘A man’s life without the bee would be extremely difficult.’ I have found out in my studies so far how to build a native bee box and to coach them to go in there, I also learnt how as they are the smallest (5mm to 10mm) and they can do a lot of things. You may eat honey bees honey but native bee’s honey is a lot different and much harder to get, as they are only small and don’t carry much. If you do want to collect honey from them they may bite you (which is harmless) but they have no sting. I hope you are interested and want to know more.

Dad, how come You never asked me To become a Mason? “Because as a rule, a Mason does not directly ask anyone to join. Not even his best friend or his Son.” Most men joined after they became interested and asked a Mason how to go about it. Freemasonry is the oldest and largest fraternity in the world. It brings men together from every walk of life, for fellowship, the promotion of integrity, and good citizenship. It is not a political or religious organization, but it does require a belief in a Supreme Being. If you would like to know more, talk to a Mason, Your questions will be welcome. Ph. Bill Winfield at 4033 6004 or email bill@winfields.com.au The United Grand Lodge of Queensland have created a great Opportunity to become a Freemason by establishing “The Lewis Scheme” In line with our strategy of attracting new members, we are introducing an initiative to encourage family members to join Freemasonry. Known as “The Lewis Scheme”, the initiative gives men who have a close family relationship with an existing Freemason the opportunity to experience a year in the organisation free of UGLQ fees Applicants should meet the following criteria: • •

• •

Over 18 years of age, no age limit Family member of a current financial UGLQ Freemason (son, stepson, grandson, nephew, father, uncle, grandfather, etc.) No previous membership with UGLQ Not in receipt of any other UGLQ/BoB assistance

This offer covers all UGLQ fees including those incurred through passage of the three degrees in the first year. It is then anticipated that members who join under the Lewis Scheme will stay on as members for at least one year afterwards. To apply, send a written document or short video to mjackson@uglq.org.au. Applicants should answer the following questions: •

Why would you like to become a Freemason?

• •

What can you bring to Freemasonry? Why does Freemasonry appeal to you?

Robyn’s Real Estate Read Welcome to this month's Editorial of all things Real Estate. I have just returned from a Funeral today, celebrating the life of a wonderful and generous local lady, Elma Volpi. I meet many people who have illness and hardship in their lives and these kinds of situations make you reflect on how precious life, family and friends are and how important it is to check in with yourself to ensure you are doing the things you love and not saying "one day I'll do that..." I have many clients who wish to take advantage of their lives by either downsizing in order to travel, have less chores to do, more money and time to spend doing what they dream about and also people who have always wanted that special house, acreage or second property/investment for later years. With Christmas approaching we are seeing good flow through of properties with many interstate based enquiries from people moving to the area in the near future as well as an influx of investors from the southern states who have discovered our affordable market and high rental yields - the market is moving along nicely. On a professional note, I was thrilled to be nominated to the "A List" celebrating the achievements of the top 150 Real Estate Agents in Queensland for 2016. This is not something that I look for in the work that I do as I strive to help my clients to achieve their Real Estate Goals, however it is satisfying nonetheless to be recognised. If you would like to receive a Listing Checklist on how to maximise your selling price or are looking for a no obligation appraisal of your biggest asset in today's market please give me a call or email for an honest and confidential chat about your real estate needs.
