EDITION 80, MARCH 2017

www.GORDONVALE.net.au Mulgrave News is proud to be able to launch their new website gordonvale.net.au. The site is in addition to their current website MulgraveNews.com.au, but has a lot more to offer to both locals and tourists alike. The first page of the website has a little about the history of the town and pictures from around the township itself. It is hoped that the website is a one stop shop for anything to do with Gordonvale. In the business section are local Gordonvale businesses that offer services to the community in an effort to keep the local people spending locally. There are also details of local attractions including Behana Gorge, Goldsborough Valley and Greenpatch. Also included are our under utilised attractions such as the Settlers Museum. Residents will also be able to keep up with the upcoming events including the Great Pyramid Race and Country Faire, Animal Education Day and of course the annual Carols in the Park. The website is run in conjunction with a number of other initiatives and improvements to raise the profile of the town including the new RV parking area adjacent to the Mulgrave Mill. Further improvement to the town centre include new signage in Norman Park. Division 1 Councillor Brett Moller said he was pleased to see new signage installed in Norman Park at its northern location at the intersections of Norman and Gordon Street Gordonvale. Councillor Moller said this project came about after he asked for a safety audit of the park last year to look at incidences of anti-social behaviour, lighting and general park amenities. "What was identified was that nowhere did we have signage of the do's and dont's in the park where the Police and our local laws officers could point to in addressing issues in respect to unlawful activity in the park" "At the same time I wanted something that made a positive statement about the park

given how valued it is by our local community" commented Councillor Moller. As an iconic town square in the heart of Gordonvale which is being more and more utilised, Councillor Moller is looking to see what further upgrades can be made. This will include some exercise equipment and a bike rack for those who may wish to walk or ride to Norman Park to exercise. " I look forward to consulting with the community where some exercise equipment structure options can be put forward for residents to consider and provide feedback to enable this next project to be delivered" said Councillor Moller. It's pleasing to see Council is focused on and delivering for the Gordonvale community. Northern Italy to Northern Australia

Petersen Park Expansion Petersen Park is located at the top end of Petersen Road Edmonton and Work to expand the sporting precinct has commenced, with the Cairns Regional Council project to double the playing space for local rugby league teams. Stage 1 includes the preparation of 12 residential lots that will be sold to offset the cost of the expansion and are expected to go on the market in the 2nd half of this year. Division 1 Councillor Brett Moller said the $2.8 million expansion is expected to be completed by the end of August this year, weather permitting. “Following stage 1 with the creation of the residential lots, we will then turn our attention to the creation of two brand new, full size rectangular playing fields along Petersen Road,” Councillor Moller said. “These fields will be used by senior and junior rugby league, creating more opportunity for residents to get involved in organised sport on our rapidly growing southside.” Stage 3 will comprise a new amenities block, clubhouse and car parking for 169 cars plus buses. ”The new car parking will be accessed from Mt Peter Road and will help ease traffic congestion in the area when the sports fields are in use and be safer for both visitors to the park and nearby residents,” Cr Moller said. The residential lots will be on the Farmer Street side of the park, away from the premier playing field, which will be located on the south-western edge of the park.’

Kearneys Falls

At the end of Goldsborough Road is one of the best kept secrets of Far North Queensland, Kearneys Falls. Fifteen kilometres after turning onto Goldsborough Road from the Gillies Highway takes you to the Goldsborough Valley Camping Ground. The road is bitumen for the first 10 kilometres over a number of picturesque bridges before travelling the last 5 kilometres on gravel. The camping grounds themselves are set amongst the rainforest with mountains on one side and the Mulgrave River on the other. Follow the road to the end of the camping ground and you will find yourself on the Goldfield Walking track. This track eventually leads to the Boulders near Innisfail and is quite a long walk, however, for the fit people can be done in a day. The Camping ground has many individual camp sites. At the top end of one of the camping sites is the Kearneys Falls walking track. This is one for the whole family and can be easily done in an hour. The 1.7km return track is well defined winding through the rainforest with a few gentle climbs before coming out onto a timber deck at the bottom of Kearneys Falls. The water cascades down the rock face into a number of small pools. For safety access to the rock face and pools is prohibited. There are many areas to cool off once arriving back at the camping ground. The Mulgrave News would like to acknowledge the Yidinji Aboriginal people who are the traditional owners of the land

New Police Station Moving Ahead By Curtis Pitt

I am excited to see plans for the new Gordonvale Police Station on Draper Road moving ahead, with the State Government working through the land designation process to allow for the development of this critical community infrastructure. Residents will also soon see the commencement of construction on the new $3.5 million Gordonvale Fire Station on Riverstone Road once the wet season comes to an end and I look forward to seeing many local contractors working on this project over the coming months. Together, the new police station and fire station will deliver modern new infrastructure to meet the future demands for service as the population of the southern corridor continues to grow.

Boat Ramp Upgrades

Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitts office has received many positive calls regarding the upgrade works planned at various boat ramps in the local area. Mr Pitt is pleased to advise upgrade works on the boat ramps at Bellenden Ker, located on Russell River Road and Packer’s Camp, located on Redbank Road, have commenced. The $400,000 upgrade works at Bellenden Ker involve reconstructing the two lane boat ramp to TMR’s current all tide standard and will include wider lanes with a non-slip surface and construction of fully grouted rock shoulders. The $1.5M Redbank works include upgrading the single lane boat ramp to four lanes and construction of a floating walkway. I understand the Cairns Regional Council are looking to design and construct new car and trailer parking to support the improved facility. Planning work is currently underway for construction work at the Edmonton and Fearnley Street, Portsmith Ramps. In the interest of safety, the Bellenden Ker and Edmonton boat ramps will be closed during the construction works. Alternative public boat ramps are available nearby at: • • • •

TALKING LAW

with Brett Moller

Growing up on the family cane farm at Aloomba my Father always taught me "horses for courses". By that he meant if you wanted to get your car fixed you go to a mechanic, if you want to get your light switches fixed you go to an electrician and if your tooth needs a filling you go to a dentist.

Similarly if you are going to enter into any Contract or Agreement you should always first see your solicitor to understand your obligations now and into the future and what rights are afforded you under that contractual arrangement. The legal system with laws under State and Federal Acts and Regulations and also local Council by-laws are what we operate in on a daily basis and are extensive and can be complex. Having previously written law articles in local community publications as a way of giving back to my local community, I am pleased to be able to again contribute with general information on a range of subjects from obligations and rights under Contracts of Sale, Leases and Licences, what to consider in making your Will and Enduring Power of Attorney, how to recover a debt owed or mediate a neighbour dispute around boundaries or fence lines and more. In addition you can contact me to comment on a specific legal query you may have. As always whilst general information can be useful as a guide you should at all times first seek your own independent legal advice specific to your personal or business situation. Northern Italy to Northern Australia From an interview with Aldo Amadio 2014 (Information supplied by Mulgrave Settlers Museum) Many migrant families left their homelands to start a new life in far north Qld. The Amadio family is one of them and this is their story. Ferdinando (Frank) Amadio came from Musano, a small town near Venice in northern Italy. At 14 he went to the USA to find work in the building industry and he got jobs building houses and bridges. After many years he returned to Italy and married. He and his new bride returned to the USA and while they were there his wife died, so once again he returned to Italy. He then married Carolina Torresan and together they had five children, Anna (Gina), Erminio (George), Pietro (Peter), Aldo (Alan) and Mario. Frank left his family in Italy and this time decided to come to Australia. He came to Innisfail and built the tram line from Tully to Innisfail. Frank stayed in Innisfail for 10 years before he brought his family to Australia. It was 1938 and Italy had a very depressed economy and the Second World War was imminent, so Frank decided Australia was a much better option for his family to resettle in. He even had all the family members become naturalised Australian citizens before they left Italy. The family had lived on a small farm in Italy and had never left the area, now they were going to Australia and had to make their way to Naples to catch the luxury liner Orontes. This was an adventure of a life time for the children as they had never seen so much opulence and foods of all description. The ship sailed through the Suez Canal and finally reached Sydney and then they boarded a train for Innisfail.

The Amadio family lived in Innisfail for four months, before Frank bought a cane farm in Gordonvale at Highleigh from Jack Matthews, which consisted of 115 acres with 84 acres under cane. Aldo recalls, “I was only 13 when we came to Australia and dad gave us a present – a chipping hoe. When I was 14 he gave us another present- a cane knife”. Frank didn’t think the children needed to go to school, he thought they needed to work. The Police Sergeant in Gordonvale suggested that Frank could get a tutor for the children, so he hired a young girl, but that didn’t work out either and it wasn’t long before the girl had said she’d had enough and left. Through trial and error and with a lot of help from Jack Rigato, who had married Gina Amadio, the Amadio boys became farmers. To plant the cane they made a bundle of cane stalks, cut them into pieces with the cane knife into a bag, which was then tipped into a planter box. Aldo was still 13 when he recalls sitting on a planter, drawn by two horses and while he dropped the cut stalks into the planter box, he was accidentally clipped around the ears by the reins used by the driver of the horses. Working with fertilizers was also trial and error. Once again two horses pulled along a scarifier on which was a box with a bag of fertilizer on top. A sprocket would shake the box and release the fertilizer. “Sometimes the tick, tick of the sprocket would frighten the horses and they would take off” Aldo said. The cane on Matthews farm was the Badila variety and it grew very tall and had thick black stalks. The Amadio boys did most of the cutting themselves, but sometimes had help from a gang from the Trevor family. …………………………TO BE CONTINUED …………………………

Dad, what do you really do at those Masonic Meetings? A Masonic Lodge usually meets one or two evenings a month to conduct its business, vote on petitions for membership, and confer the three degrees of masonry. The meetings may include a speaker or other program of interest, sometimes open to family and friends. Many activities are held outside the Lodge Room, such as: dinners, trips, sporting events, visits to veterans hospitals – in short, a variety of activities. Masons are also very much involved in community service and charitable works, providing over a million dollars a day nationally, to help Masons and non Masons alike. Freemasonry (or Masonary) is the oldest and largest fraternity in the world. It brings together men from all walks of life for fellowship, the promotion of integrity and good citizenship. It is not a political or religious organization, but does require a belief in a Supreme Being. If you would like to know more, talk to a Mason your questions will be welcome.

Applause for the Grafton Hotel Peter Muskens, manager of the Grafton Hotel Edmonton, has recently donated funds raised through raffles to the Gordonvale Red Cross. Mr Muskens requested that some of the funds go directly to local Cairns charities. In conjuction with the Grafton Hotel, the Gordonvale Red Cross have recently made a donation of a Multi-switch adaptor to ARC Disability Services Inc, a Cairns based, not for profit organisation, supporting people who have disabilities and their support networks in FNQ since 1976. The unit is called a Powerlink 4 Control Unit, which allows users to control up to two electrical appliances with single switches. Great for individuals who are unable to activate appliances due to various physical disabilities or lack of fine motor skills. Individuals, with the press of a single button can activate a range of appliances easily increasing independence, engagement and self esteem. This device will provide people with a disability, the opportunity to perform tasks not previously able to be undertaken as well as giving them added sight & sound stimulus to lead a more engaged & fulfilling life. We are all very grateful to Peter Muskens of the Grafton Hotel for the opportunity to once again provide support to the community.

Robyn’s Bowen Therapy & Emmett Technique Pregnancy is such a beautiful experience and a very special time in your life. Unfortunately some women experience discomfort and pain during this time or, in the later stages, also find it difficult to get comfortable at night. If you are having trouble sleeping or are feeling back, joint or muscular pain there are some simple techniques that can provide relief and help you have that precious good nights sleep. I have worked with many pregnant ladies who have put up with back pain and other discomfort throughout their pregnancy as they thought that it was normal to have pain issues. After a treatment it is so good to see the smile come back to their face when they are able to enjoy their pregnancy feeling comfortable and well rested. Other symptoms a treatment may help relieve: Hip & back pain, neck & shoulder restrictions, knee ankle & foot issues, lymphatic congestion & breathing, headaches & tension, dizziness, sinus, balance, relaxation, jaw issues and much more. If you have never experienced Emmett Technique or Bowen Therapy you can visit me at the Gordonvale markets on the first Saturday of each month. I do introductory treatments and can answer any questions you may have. Alternatively give me a call on the numbers below for any further information. Medical rebates available and home visits on request. Robyn John 90 Riverstone Rd, Gordonvale | Ph: 40563656 / 0431303453 | Also you can find me on Facebook
