Gordonvale Projects Near Completion FREE Whilst most people were taking a break over Christmas the Cairns Regional Council has been working hard continuing with a number of major projects around our Town.

The Mill Street Car Park adjacent to Norman Park was formed, sealed and tree planting completed in early December. The car park was fully utilised at the Carols by Candlelight evening in Norman Park in December and is a welcomed asset by market operators, businesses and the community at large. The Mill Street Carpark was a project put forward by the Gordonvale Chamber of Commerce a number of years ago and former Councillor Steve Brain secured a lease from Qld Rail. Councilor Brett Moller was able to secure the funding in the 2016/2017 budget to have the project completed. The car park provides for additional RV and overflow motor vehicle parking in an effort to bring tourists into our town centre. This project ties into the economic development planning for Gordonvale which was a promise Cr Moller took to the election last year. Cr Moller also said he could see the potential to develop a Cultural/Heritage trail along Mill Street from the centre of town to the Greenpatch recreational area, where many tourists stay overnight. Cairns Regional Council is currently in discussions with

the Qld Government around the management of this area and there is the possibility to look to upgrade the area to formalise it as an official RV Park. The Heritage/Cultural trail is the connector to the town centre but is also an attraction for locals and visitors alike to explore the area once they come into town. Cr Moller said he would continue to progress this as certainty is reached around ongoing management of the Greenpatch area. As well as the Mill Street Carpark completion the Cairns Regional Council has installed playground equipment for Leighton Park and Dempsey Park at Pyramid Estate. Councillor Moller said he had received lots of positive feedback where these parks have been embraced by children and families alike. Both of these parks should be completed very soon with shade sails to be added. On top of this work the library renovations are well and truly underway with completion planned in the first half of this year. For any further details or ideas Councillor Moller can be found at the Hub building Monday mornings 9am to 12 noon or at the Gordonvale markets the first Saturday of the month.

Gordonvale RSL

Consideration For Federal Funds

The iconic building that is the Gordonvale Sub branch of the RSL is under consideration for funding support from the Federal Government.

LNP candidate for Mulgrave, Robyn Quick, has enlisted the support of Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister, Senator James McGrath, to inspect the building and take a case for financial support to the Prime Minister and Minister for Veterans Affairs. The building needs significant refurbishment, to ensure it can continue into the future as a major community centre for Gordonvale. Mrs Quick said that over the past seventy-five years, the Gordonvale RSL Hall has had a continuous connection to the military and veterans' community of far north Queensland. "This has led to the development of a keen community pride in the RSL Hall building and what it represents," Mrs Quick said. "In addition, the building has been the venue for community functions and events over that period, with many people seeing family baptism, school graduation, marriage and funeral celebrations and commemorations. These are in addition to the regular and highly symbolic commemorations held in respect to the veterans themselves." RSL Sub Branch Secretary, David Chalk said the number of long standing RSL Hall style sub branches are diminishing rapidly. "Over the past two to three decades, there have been closures and alterations that in themselves tend to lessen the symbolic representation of the classic RSL Hall. The Gordonvale RSL Hall is one of few that retains its original operational and functional base, whilst retaining very broad community support and usage. This year, we had over 3,000 people attend the Anzac Day Service. We had well over 1,000 attend Remembrance Day just last month and the number of community groups that depend on our facilities is quite significant." Senator McGrath said that whilst he could not commit to any immediate funding arrangements, he would take the case back to Canberra and "enthusiastically support funding" for the building. "I am passionate about protecting our heritage buildings and the important stories they tell about our history and the development of communities in north Queensland," Senator McGrath said. "I am the Patron of the Rocky Creek Igloo Restoration project, which also aims to restore an important piece of Australia's wartime history." Senator McGrath said the Government would need to undertake due diligence and establish a framework of costings for the project before any funding was made available. I will certainly convey the community significance and heritage value of the Gordonvale RSL Hall strongly to the relevant Ministers in Canberra," he said.

“This is particularly important at this time, given that next year is the 75th Anniversary of the outbreak of the War in the Pacific; and the Hall's important and continuous links with the United States and Australian military and the veteran's community more broadly since 1942." Mrs Quick said that it would be a tragic turn of events "if this iconic and highly symbolic building", situated in the very centre of Gordonvale, was lost to the community. "Far too often, we see the very symbols of our heritage lost from the community. We have this opportunity to ensure that does not happen to the RSL Hall in Gordonvale, and I shall fight tooth and nail to make sure it is retained for both our veterans' needs and for the wider community of Gordonvale."

“Of course, we are fully aware that we will need to 'kick the tin' as well. We also need to seek support from Cairns Regional Council and, hopefully, the state branch of the RSL. These are all things we need to undertake in progression with the efforts of Senator McGrath. "It would also be very remiss of me not to say a very sincere 'thank you' to Mrs Quick, who has shown that she is an absolute champion for our cause."

Dementia Unit Funding Cazaly's Community Benefit Fund provides $4800 to Pyramid Residential Care Centre.

Pyramid Residential Care Centre has received $4800 funding late last year to purchase 4 new recliner chairs for their Dementia Wing from Cazaly's Community Benefit Fund. Debra Quabba facility manager at Pyramid Residential Care Centre says "Sufferers of Dementia and Dementia related diseases suffer a wide range of psychological and physical changes as they progress through their illnesses. As a result family and friends suffer equally with their loved one. Being able to provide a relaxing area with these lovely recliners, our residents and their families can relax is a fantastic feeling. Pyramid Residential Care Centre also encourage local school children to visit to undertake school based projects such as instrumental music concerts, singing concerts and other activities such as playing cards and scrabble. Being able to provide a comfortable lounge area will make this a happier and more comfortable experience.” Mrs Quabba also stated that without this extremely generous funding from Cazaly's Community Benefit Fund we would certainly be unable to allow our residents to enjoy the remainder of their lives in comfort. We certainly can't thank them enough.

Mr Chalk said the executive and members of the Gordonvale RSL were grateful that Senator McGrath had taken the time to visit and were very hopeful of a positive outcome.

Miss Teen Australia RSL Update Kauri Eddie

By the Bugler

Great news for the Gordonvale community as the Committee of the Gordonvale RSL Sub-Branch have made the decision to refurbish the existing building in Gordon Street.

Through grant money and donations from the community the RSL will once again become the central hub of the town. On the 16th of December last year Senator James McGrath made and inspection of the hall and is working with the committee in their endeavor to bring the building back to its former glory. Talks have also been held with State Treasurer Curtis Pitt over the last couple of months and the members would like to thank Curtis for his offer to relocate, however the tradition and history that is held within the parcel of land can not be forgotten or replaced. The Gordonvale RSL Annual general meeting is to be held on Sunday the 5th of February 2017 at 10am. Lest we Forget.

Community Calendar Gordonvale Community Hub located @ 17-19 Cannon Street Fifteen year old Gordonvale Teenager Kauri Eddie was named Miss Teen Australia at a presentation evening on January 14th at the Pullman Reef Casino Hotel. Miss Teen Australia was created as a stepping stone to international events such as Miss Universe and Miss World. The Choreographed show exposes the latest fashions and Australia’s leading designers and is also an opportunity to discover Australia’s most outstanding women. This is the second time that Kauri has entered the competition, having been an entrant in 2014. There were three other entrants in the competition from Far North Queensland that helped make up a total of 25 in the competition. Kauri has won a trip to Fiji for a photo shoot as part of her prizes. Kauri is a grade 11 student at Gordonvale State High School and the team at Mulgrave News congratulates Kauri for a wonderful achievement.

Mens Shed Update The Gordonvale Mens Shed has made enormous progress over the last couple of months and are hoping to have the slab completed by the end of February and the 18 metre by 10 metre to be erected by the end of March. Purchase of the shed was made possible by money from the Cazaly’s Community Gaming Fund and The Mens Shed Association. The Gordonvale Mens shed will also require on going funds to cover utilities such as electricity, water and telephone. To assist in covering these costs, the association is asking for an expression of interest from community groups to utilize the facility for a nominal fee. This will help boost funds raised through the sale of products manufactured in the shed including elevated garden beds and children’s toys. Members also continue to do sausage sizzles to help raise money. The association would like to advise members of the community that the 2017 Annual General Meeting will be held on the 15th of February. Cost to be a member is $30. Christmas Comes Early for Community Groups Christmas came early for community groups around Cairns with the successful recipients of the latest round of Gambling Community Benefit Fund Grants (GCBF) announced this week. Treasurer and Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt congratulated the 37 FNQ not-forprofit groups who will share in more than $830,000 in grants in round 90. "For some businesses Christmas is a time to wind down, relax and reflect on the year that was but this often isn't the case for our not-for-profit groups with local communities needing their support and services year round," Mr Pitt said. “In this round we've seen the Gordonvale Men's Shed awarded more than $33,000 to construct a shed. In addition, more than $28,000 is going to the Cairns and District Kart Racing Club to purchase equipment, and almost $35,000 for the Innisfail Rowing Club.” Member of Barron River Craig Crawford said applying for funding was now easier for community groups, thanks to the new GCBF grants management system launched

recently. "Delivering this funding, including nearly $20,000 for the Ivanhoe Football and Recreation Club to replace its floor, helps these vital community groups plan ahead with confidence for 2017.” "Groups like these bind our communities together, and I encourage other community groups to take advantage of the new GCBF portal, which makes applications easier and quicker. "To apply for funding, groups now need to login to the portal, register their organisation and complete their application. They can use a range of devices and internet browsers to do this. When the application is received it can be viewed by the applicant in real-time and they can acquit or vary their grant.” For further information or to view the list of successful recipients in round 90 visit www.justice.qld.gov.au/grants. What exactly does a professional dental clean do for you? Prevent tooth loss: Gum disease is a major cause of tooth loss in the adult population. Gum disease is caused by bacteria which grow in plaque & scale on your teeth. As time progresses, the bacteria eat away at the gums and underlying bone supporting your teeth, causing them to become loose and eventually fall out. Luckily, this is largely preventable with regular professional cleaning to remove the bacteria and build-up from your teeth. Prevent dental decay: The same plaque that causes gum disease is also responsible for causing dental decay and cavities in your teeth. Alongside a balanced diet & home oral hygiene, professional cleaning helps remove stubborn build up from your teeth before any damage can be done. Brighten your smile: You can expect your teeth to look and feel brighter and lighter in colour, as any plaque/scale and staining is removed (especially those stubborn tea & coffee stains!).

Why do some people still think Masonry is a secret society? This mistaken notion has been widely believed over the years. That facts are that the membership, meeting places, and activities of the Masonic fraternity are well known to anyone who is interested. You can find books on Masonry in your local library. Even the constitutions, rules and regulations have been published. Freemasonry (or Masonry) is the oldest and largest fraternity in the world. It brings together men from all walks of life, for fellowship, the promotion of integrity, and good citizenship. It is not a political or religious organisation, but it does require a belief in a Supreme Being. Masons are also very much involved in community service and charitable works, providing over a million-dollars-a-day to help Masons and non Masons alike. If you would like to know more, talk to a Mason- your questions will be welcome.

An Excerpt from The Northerner by Mrs D. E. Griffiths (Information supplied by Mulgrave Settlers Museum) Kids in the early days apparently had no fear. On the other hand, perhaps they were more adventurous! At any rate, the going-thing for youngsters was to torment crocodiles for the sake of something to do. Mrs D.E. Griffiths recorded some facts about lifestyle at Stratford and Freshwater in the late 1800's. I grew up on a selection north of the Barron River called Acacia Bank because of the many Acacia trees that grew there. There were nine of us kids, five boys and four girls. No bridges spanned the Barron River in those days, a day in Cairns meant a journey of 30 miles, 15 in and 15 back. A horse was harnessed to a spring cart or sulky and the river was forded at the present Kamerunga crossing. Often we rowed across and caught the 10 o'clock train at Stratford, the only train into Cairns of a morning. There were many ferrymen, but old Ah Bow was our first. He had a square shaped boat and would stand and row with long oars. A few years later, Mrs Marett would ferry us across. She could be amiable, but she could be an old tartar. If in a temper she could swear words to the minute than the best bullock driver of the day. However, she destroyed many a crocodile with her old muzzle loading shotgun. The old gun would fizz for quite a time before it went bang. Marett Street Stratford, is named after this old-time warrior. Often, instead of crossing at the ferry, we would row a mile down the river on our own boat. Crocodiles then were numerous. My cousin was learning to swim in the river and tragically was taken by one. On our journey down the river in our leaky boat, kids being kids we would indulge in the odd prank. My brothers would see a crocodile sleeping on the bank and use their shanghais to fire rocks at it. They would laugh when the crocodile suddenly woke up slid into the water and would rock the boat from side to side. Chinese gardens were numerous around the Freshwater Valley along the Barron River. Corn, bananas, pineapples, citrus fruits, granadillas, pawpaws and rice were some of the products grown. There were many sheds along the Barron River to hold the produce in readiness for the Chinese junks and steamers to load. Every Sunday and Wednesday mornings, we would watch for the sails of the Chinese junks to come up the river one behind the other. Chinese New Year was a time for crackers and they would echo from one garden to another. It would continue for six weeks with lots of noise, feasting and visiting. There were two rice mills in the district; Kipling's at Freshwater Creek which got its power from a water wheel and the other was a steam mill at Stratford. We would take our rice to Kipling's to be husked. He would give us back the polished rice and the pollard for the fowls and ducks and the husks to fill our mattresses.

Dengue PROGRAM UPDATE 2016 has been a year of accelerated growth and development for our program. The emergence of Zika as a significant threat to public health highlighted the vulnerability of many countries to Aedes-borne viruses. The WHO recommendation of our approach for pilot deployment also underscored the need for stronger investment in innovative efforts to prevent these diseases. This led to increased interest in Eliminate Dengue's unique self-sustaining Wolbachia method. In October, we announced new funding of US$18 million to significantly expand our projects in Brazil and Colombia, and welcomed new donors including USAID and the UK Government. We are now in discussions with potential new country sites and anticipate a number of projects to be announced in 2017. As we turn our attention to new challenges, it is important to reflect on what we have accomplished this year. Our first efficacy trials commenced in Yogyakarta, Indonesia with preliminary results on direct disease transmission impact expected within the next 12-18 months. We finalised preparations to move into Nha Trang City, Vietnam early next year, expanded into dengue hot spots in Northern Australia and will have completed releases in Townsville by year end. The Townsville community pioneered the release of mosquitoes with Wolbachia as a citizen science initiative with over 10,000 volunteers hosting the 'Mozzie Box', and we are now exploring this approach in various forms around the world. Each of our projects offers us new learnings and insights that we can adapt and use in other environments. I would like to thank the communities we have worked with in Australia, Indonesia, Colombia, Vietnam and Brazil for contributing to our

ongoing research. We could not have achieved all this without your assistance and active participation. I would also like to extend my gratitude to the growing number of people involved in the Eliminate Dengue Program. This includes not only staff working tirelessly on projects around the world, but also a great many partners and research collaborators that have helped us advance the implementation of Wolbachia as a public health intervention. It also includes both new and longstanding funding partners, whose support has been instrumental in moving us from lab-based research to largescale pilot deployments in areas where dengue and other mosquito-borne viruses are endemic. We have significantly increased our activity in northern Queensland this year, including starting projects in Charters Towers and Douglas Shire, plus expanding our Cairns project. Our largest site, Townsville, has continued to grow with the help of the local community, who have taken the lead by growing and releasing mosquitoes with Wolbachia in their own backyards.
