Total Solar Eclipse Out & About with CAIRNS REGIONAL GALLERY The Cairns Regional Gallery’s new Out and About Program is coming to Gordonvale this summer and continuing throughout 2013. This exciting new program offers residents outside of Cairns City the opportunity to discover and create art through classes, workshops and community days, that until now have only been available in the centre of town.
Overcast conditions did not take anything away from the spectacular solar eclipse over Gordonvale early on Wednesday morning the 14th of November. The natural phenomenon commenced at 5.45am, and finished at 7.41am. The town was plunged into complete darkness at 6.38am for 1 minute and 47 seconds. An eclipse of the Sun occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun and completely covers the Sun. This casts a shadow that moves across the Earth's surface in what is called the Path of Totality. The last total solar eclipse in Cairns was in 710 AD and the next one won’t be until April 25, 2237. Two to five solar eclipses occur each year, however most of these are over the water and no more than two of those can be total eclipses. The next Total Solar Eclipse will be March 20, 2015 in the Atlantic Ocean, Thorshavn on the Faroe Islands (approximately halfway between Norway and Iceland), Spitzbergen (in the Arctic at the northernmost part of Norway) and the North Pole.
The Out and About programs aim to generate a love of learning and creativity, through discovering, sharing, discussing and making art. Highly regarded regional artists who will inspire participants and share their techniques will lead all workshops and classes. Participants will also be able to view original works of art from leading regional practitioners and the Gallery’s collection. Out and about will offer a range of regular art classes for kids through to adults and a range of ways for newcomers, regular visitors and seasoned experts alike to deepen their knowledge, understanding, skills and enjoyment of art. Starting on Monday 17 December will be school holiday workshops at the community hub for 5-12 year olds. Artist Deb Gray will teach children how to make a 3D Aussie Christmas frieze complete with Santa and Sleigh from recycled materials including plastic bottles, tissue paper and foam. On Friday 21 December artist Louisa Ennis Thomas will teach children to create colourful scenes inspired by views of journeys through a car window using a mixed media composition exploring colour, shape and translucent materials. All classes are from 10.30am - 12.30pm and cost $15 per class. Bookings are essential as class sizes are limited. In the new year Out and About will come back to Gordonvale with artist Hayley Gillespie’s and teach children how to make colourful hobby horses from shoe boxes that will keep children amused for hours. Don’t forget to see Hayley’s magical exhibition Little by Little through Wonderland at the Cairns Regional Gallery from 21 December 2012 through to 17 February 2013 that all the family will enjoy.
Since average cloud cover during March for these regions is high, visibility is likely to be limited. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity and many residents took advantage of the opportunity.

The History of Slater & Klarwein Cordials (Information supplied by Mulgrave Settlers Museum) Did you know that Gordonvale had its own soft drink factory? The factory building was located on the corner of Riverstone Road and Church Street opposite the Scout Hall. Slater and Klarwein Cordials also produced ice and it was delivered by horse and wagon well into the 1940’s, even though electricity came to Gordonvale in the 1930’s. The factory supplied ice and drinks to Gordonvale’s six hotels, stores and private homes and transported ice packed in sawdust, by rail to Aloomba. A suction gas machine operated two cold rooms and the ice making plant used bore water, as there was no town water until the 1930’s. When electricity was introduced to the soft drink factory, the number of staff dropped from twelve to six employees. However, there were many advantages of electricity and the factory replaced the gas driven plant with a new electric filling machine which increased production. Motor vehicles enabled Slater & Klarwein to sell their soft drinks in Cairns hotels and on the Atherton tablelands.
American troops sent trucks to Babinda to load supplies. Hanush’s quickly expanded into Cairns and Mareeba. In post war years Slater & Klarwein concentrated re-establishing their former trade with hotels in Cairns and Gordonvale. In 1948, Walter Slater sold his shares to Herb Klarwein. Klarwein Cordials manufactured fourteen different flavours and their lemonade, sarsaparilla and NuBru( using Horehound herb) were famous drinks throughout Far North Queensland. Their use of imported English essences and personal supervision while mixing during the production, ensured this quality. However this was not enough to save Klarwein Cordials and in September 1979 the company closed its doors. The Mulgrave Settler Museum will close on Friday 14th December 2012 and re-open on Tuesday 29th January 2013.
During the Second World War, raw materials, especially sugar, was hard to come by and production and sales dropped considerably. Several of the factory employees were also in the armed services and manpower was difficult to obtain for Slater. Another problem was that there were no army contracts offered to the business even though Australian troops were camped at Riverstone using the Green Hill area as their jump field. The Gordonvale Commercial Hotel (now Riverstone Hotel) became the American Hospital and the Central Hotel (now Parkview Hotel) became an American Red Cross Club, so with the influx of both Australian and American troops, a rival firm Hanush’s based in Babinda flourished and continued to expand. Hanush’s purchased newer technology and the Australian and
Ray-Lee in top 25 songs Boost for local AFL boys Local Gordonvale resident 16 year old Ray-Lee Russell is in the final round of the top 25 songs in the youth category of Australian Songwriter's Association's 2012 Songwriters competition with her song “Heartbroken”. Ray-Lee’s next competition is on the 13th of December when she goes on to the next round of competition at the ASA National Songwriting Awards gala night at Wests’ Ashfield Leagues Club in Sydney. Ray-Lee has celebrated recent success earlier this year when she was selected to represent Australia at the 16th World Championships of Performing Arts in Hollywood, Los Angeles in June of this year where she competed in 5 sections and won 4 medals. Ray-Lee was also lucky enough to get call backs from two High Profile Record Companies in the US with both companies interested in possibly working with Ray-Lee in the future after seeing her performances in Hollywood. AFL football in Gordonvale has received another huge boost courtesy of two local boys. Lachlan Smith (Under 14) and Phillip Solomon (Under 12), who both play for the local Pyramid Power Junior AFL Club, have both been selected as part of the Gold Coast Suns Talent Academy. Congratulations are in order for both boys as they now embark on the next stage of a journey which could take them to the highest levels of AFL football. Their selections follow on from last year’s crop of future AFL stars which saw Djarragun College boys, Henry Mareko, Ralph Daniels and Zengrey Nona gain academy selection also. In other local AFL news, Pyramid Power will be involved in major AFL promotional events in Yarrabah and Innisfail during early December. Both events will be aimed at encouraging young people from these communities to give AFL football a go.

Christmas Trifle

2L vanilla custard 1 x large tin of fruit salad in syrup 1 x can of spray cream 1 x jam sponge roll 2 x red jelly crystals packets 2 x green jelly crystals packets 3 x Cottee's instant chocolate pudding packets 3 x Cottee's instant vanilla pudding packets *Change volumes of ingredients depending on the size of your trifle bowl, this list of ingredients should fill a large punch bowl and serve 7 people about 2-3 times over Christmas and boxing day and keep everything refrigerated.
Day before: 1. Prepare jelly crystals per instructions, place both colours in separate containers and put them in the fridge 2. Cut jam sponge roll into thick slices and place on the bottom of your trifle bowl and up the sides until you've used it all up 3. Drain the juice from the fruit salad tin over the jam sponge roll in the trifle bowl, making sure all slices are covered. Refrigerate 4. Place fruit into a separate container to use later and refrigerate On the day: 5. Make instant pudding per packet instructions and set aside 6. Roughly cut both jellies into squares 7. Layer fruit, green jelly, chocolate mousse, red jelly, custard and vanilla mousse until your trifle bowl is full. 8. Garnish the top of the trifle with spray cream. According to the latest report from HTW: "Property continues to turn over at a faster pace than twelve months ago. The August 2012 Cairns median house price was $331,000, which is a 3.7% reduction since August 2011. Rental houses continue to show very tight supply as a result on on-going demand and the absence of new supply. The vacancy rate for houses stood at a very low 1.7% during September 2012, while units were at 2.9%. Rental housing shortages have resulted in escalated rents across all categories of housing over the last 12 months. Between September 2011 and September 2012, the average median rent increased from $325 to $350 per week for houses, and from $240 to $255 per week for units. Rents are likely to continue increasing during 2012-13 as the rental supply stays tight." This information could very well signal the movement for Cairns away from the bottom of the property clock marketplace and on a rise to recovery as renters choose to purchase rather than pay escalating rent and investors are more active as their return on investment rises. Already I am seeing the case of many people wanting to purchase and there not being very much choice right now. Construction underway for new Funeral Home Construction of B J Brady Funeral Directors new Funeral Home and Crematorium on Maher Road, Gordonvale is now well under way. The new facility being constructed by Gary Riches Builders is currently running about a month ahead of schedule, thanks to the dedication of local tradesmen and the current run of good weather. Construction commenced in October and the project is due for completion in March 2013. The facility will be the new home for B J Brady Funeral Directors and will encompass a complete new state of the art funeral home, administration and arrangement offices, an air conditioned chapel with genuine fixed seating for 300 people, crematorium, catering facilities and ample sealed off street car parking. The project has been a long time in the planning, 3 years to be exact. The 2 acre site was purchased in November 2011.

The “Dunny Lanes” in Gordonvale By Wendy Maddocks Hands up everyone who has taken a short cut down Bell or Horton Lane or driven through from Moller Street to Cairns Road on Hoare Lane. Originally built as sanitation access lanes when the “Dunny” was placed at the end of the back yard (for obvious reasons), these lanes are a rarity nowadays and Gordonvale is one of the few places that have retained this link to the past. The word “Dunny” is believed to come from the French word “Dunegan” or “Dunnakin” meaning “privy” and it is even listed in the Penguin English Dictionary. Funny stories, poetry, songs and books about this “shed up the back,” have become part of our vocabulary and one piece of verse that will be recognized by many is the reminder the Dunny Man left at Christmas time: A Merry Christmas to you all, With plenty of good cheer, And may you have prosperity, Throughout the coming year.
And though the police keep order, There’s no more useful man, Than the chap who calls at daybreak, And juggles with the can. We leave your pan quite clean, And try not to make a mess, We leave our verses every year, And wish you all success. A few bottles of beer were prudently left as a token of the householder’s appreciation and insurance of continued accident-free service. Visitors to Gordonvale are fascinated with the lanes and their history so it is disturbing to read in the Planning and Environment Committee’s “Gordonvale Local Plan Status Report” (May 2011), that the rear laneways could be used “to build small scale multiple dwellings.” As happened in Darlinghurst, Sydney in February 2011 and other places. It is to be hoped that the local community would be fully consulted before this happens in Gordonvale. There’s no more backyard Dunnys or bottles of Yuletide cheer. So I’ll just wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

As the new Field Trial Manager of the Eliminate Dengue Project I would like to introduce myself. My predecessor, Brian Montgomery, has moved to Brisbane to take up a position with Queensland Health. In 2011, Eliminate Dengue undertook the first field trials of Wolbachia Aedesaegypti mosquitoes in Yorkeys Knob and Gordonvale. Our latest results from November 2012 show that 98% of Aedesaegypti mosquitoes in Gordonvale carry Wolbachia. This is a good result and we expect, if dengue was brought into Gordonvale, that there would be a reduced risk of dengue transmission. In April, we undertook additional field trials in Machans Beach and Babinda. We have been monitoring the mosquitoes in both communities to see if Wolbachia established in the wild mosquito population. At present mosquito numbers are very low in these communities, but we should know the outcome of these trials once the wet season begins and mosquito numbers increase. In January, we hope to undertake our next field trial in Edge Hill, Parramatta Park, Westcourt and Whitfield. We are currently recruiting participants and are receiving strong support for the trial. As we continue our research throughout 2013, we encourage everyone in Gordonvale to continue to protect themselves from being bitten by mosquitoes. I look forward to meeting you soon, Andrew Turley.
