VE NEWS EDITION 42, AUGUST 2013

54th Great Pyramid Race & Country Fair August 10 2013 sees the running of the iconic Great Pyramid Race and country fair for the 54th year.

Enshrined in history is the story of two cane farmers who laid a bet to settle an argument while quenching their thirst in a local pub never and they could have imagined their impulsive wager would have evolved into the major regional event it is today. But if legend is to be believed, that is how Gordonvale’s Great Pyramid Race came to be. Two friends apparently laid a token bet about who could run to the peak of Walsh’s Pyramid overlooking Gordonvale in the quickest time, and this gradually developed into what is now a major annual event in the small sugar town, 24 kms south of Cairns. History has it that the men’s wager created so much interest in the town that the local bookie took bets on the outcome of the challenge up the 922m high peak and back. The first official race took place in 1959 to coincide with Queensland Centenary celebrations. Since then, race training has gone from none at all to chasing wild pigs in the scrub, to intense programs for dedicated athletes. The race itself has been described as a never ending uphill scramble followed by a controlled downhill free fall is now a regular event on the Australian Mountain Running Race calendar. The event attracts up to 5000 people into the town to watch the main event and participate in other sporting and cultural competitions. Many local clubs, schools and sporting organisations contribute to the day, by putting on demonstrations. The day kicks off early commencing with market stalls throughout the day which are the biggest Gordonvale sees for the year. There is also art competitions, a 1500 metre and 5km road race as well as dancing, martial arts displays and local school bands. The event continues into the evening with events on stage and culminating in a fireworks display at 7.30pm. As usual the pubs and clubs around the town will all have entertainment, including big boys toys, kids zone and carnival rides. Once again this year the Pyramid Race committee and more importantly the people of Gordonvale appreciate the support of the sponsors of this event Mulgrave Central Mill, Marino Moller Lawyers, Gordonvale RSL, National Australia Bank, Gordonvale IGA, Great Northern Hotel, Channel 7, Parkview Tavern, Geckos Screen Print and Design, NQ Civil, Impress Art and Cairns Crocs.

Making Butter An excerpt from The Cairns Post – May 1888 By J.A. Metcalfe

(Information supplied by Mulgrave Settlers Museum) The Mulgrave at the lower fording was not up to the stirrup irons when I crossed it on the way out a fortnight ago. As I proceeded into the great belt of scrub country, which was five miles from the Mulgrave River, I noticed signs of much wetter weather. On arriving at Babinda Creek where it joins the Russell River, I found them both in flood and had been told that it had been in a state of chronic brim fullness for the past four weeks. I was glad to rest at Reid’s Hotel at Harvey Creek. I carried on the next day, but by the time I got to the junction of Behana Creek and the Mulgrave, I found it difficult to cross. I found Mr Neils Peter Petersen most willing and obliging to render his assistance. In the past he had travelled 1 ½ miles from his homestead to help ferry persons across in his flatty. Mr Petersen has now abandoned the old station site on the river and has established himself on the far side of the Aloomba plains on the border of Behana Creek. Mr Petersen is a practical farmer and has started butter-making. He has set up a separator, with a double horsepower working apparatus at a cost of 116 pounds. It stands with a large horse-power churn in a newly erected shed 50ft by 24ft. Beside this building, stand the harness and cart sheds and workshops and then there is the large cattle yards and milking shed. Mr Petersen is gradually breaking in a wild mob of cattle, many of them hardly worth the trouble with the little amount of milk they produce. Fortunately, he has strong and willing family members that enable him to do his farm work without any hired labour. I was shown a strong home-made wooden windlass, they fasten a stout rope round the horns of a wild cow after she was yarded and slowly wind her up into position in a bail. A few of these draggings up and they can be driven into the milking bails from the yards. The morning I was there, milking was over by half past eight and carried at once into the machinery shed. A light draft horse named “Plum”, who was in an adjoining small yard, was given a quart pale of skim milk as a reward for his steady pulling round the horse motive power, which sets the separators spinning round at about 14,000 revolutions per minute. I timed one performance of this separator; it produced twenty quarts of rich cream in nine minutes, the cream running out of one spout and the skim milk by the other. One of the many advantages of these machines is that milk is so quickly separated from the fatty matter, that it seems just as sweet and fresh as new milk and can be used for purposes of the table and for cooking. The butter made from separated milk is better and commands a higher price. By October 1888 Mr Petersen intends to establish dairying operations on an extensive scale.

Robyn’s Real Estate Read Welcome to this month's update on all things Real Estate. Spotlight on preparing your home for sale. Whenever I do an appraisal for someone I am often asked what improvements would be necessary on their property to maximise the purchase price. There is a saying in real estate circles that "it is not what you sell your property for, but what you paid for it, that will give you the best outcome." If you have good capital growth in your home then, by presenting it in a neat and tidy way, without necessarily spending too much, will usually give you the best return. If you have purchased your home at the height of the market and may need to sell now to recoup your money, then there are some inexpensive improvements that you can make to ensure your property is well presented. For example, change tap fittings and handles on kitchen and bathroom doors to a modern stainless look, modernise light fittings and change old fashioned shower screens, to name a few ideas. For a confidential chat about how to maximise your property for sale phone Robyn Hawley-Whitton - 0488 071 007 or E: robynhw@cpo.com.au

GORDONVALE MARKETS: Councillor Steve Brain, Council Parks and Leisure staff met recently with Ms Janet Brown and other members of the Gordonvale Cottage Markets Incorporation to nut out any arrangement in council managing the monthly markets. Councils main role was to assist the community in ensuring safe and legal markets were being run on Council land and to ensure the continuity of the extremely popular and prosperous markets. This was never meant to be a takeover of management of the markets.

Council are satisfied that the Gordonvale Cottage Markets are running profitably with all proceeds being donated to the Gordonvale Hospital. Books are kept in an accurate manner with audit details being recorded by the Office of Fair Trading and now to be filed with CRC as well. Insurances are current and as such Council will step aside as the committee continues their professional work, employing years of experience in running the monthly markets. Well done Janet and keep up the good work for years to come. SKATE PARK: The first step for the long awaited Gordonvale Skate Park upgrades has begun with the construction security fence at Kenrick Street Park. Council is to begin the upgrade to the Skate park facilities with more bumps and jumps. As a park of the project security lighting and surveillance cameras will be installed. Council will also formalise the BMX track in the park, scraping the grass and placing new signage. The whole project should only take a couple of months to complete. This should prove a great asset for the community and assist in activating the park.

GSS Showcases Sustainability

Gordonvale State School impressed members of the public at the Sustainable Living Expo with their interactive display using a water wise theme. Conducted by Cairns Regional Council and TAFE, this free community event showcased schools, businesses and community groups that are leaders in environmental conservation and hands-on solutions to sustainability issues. Excelsior students through storybooks, posters and the portable water wise demonstration unit communicated the importance of water conservation even in one of the wettest areas of Australia. Excelsior students also assisted Holloways Beach Environmental Education Centre by supervising and demonstrating the use of the popular energy bikes. Children attending the event enjoyed cycling on the energy bikes and as a result realizing the large amount of physical effort required to generate a small amount of electricity. Gordonvale State School was awarded $200 for its contribution to the event to be spent on sustainability projects in the school.

had the opportunity to try different restaurants and activities. You can also send this link to your family and friends as Entertainment books are also available for most capital cities in Australia and New Zealand, hosting restaurants and activities specific to that region.

Rural roads around the region are being damaged from farming practices, costing ratepayers thousands of dollars in repairs each year. The latest example of this is at Vohland Road in Aloomba where Council recently spent $200,000 on reconstruction and sealing works. It appears that the damage occurs when farming machinery such as discs, rippers, rotary hoes, rollers or ploughs are dragged across the road. This road surface damage exposes the pavement to traffic and weather which will cause potholing and pavement failure. Council is finding that this kind of damage is occurring more often and would like to ask residents to avoid such practices. Council thanks you for your cooperation.

TAB closing after 50 years

Sunday August 4th sees the closure of the TAB in Gordonvale in its current form as it moves into the Riverstone Hotel as a pub TAB. The Gordonvale TAB commenced operation in 1963 and shortly after in Easter of 1964 carol commenced her employment. At that time the Gordonvale TAB was a district centre where all the other TABs throughout the district phoned through their figures to Gordonvale, where they were then collated and then phoned through to Brisbane. Gordonvale was selected as a District centre because there were not enough phone lines in Cairns at that time. The process of course took time, very different from today where everything is almost instant. Carol said that in the early days TAB was open, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday and then for a short time on Mondays for payouts. Carol has been the appointed agent at the TAB for the last 20 years and will retire in Gordonvale. After nearly 50 years you deserve a good break and hope you enjoy your retirement.

Gordonvale Lions: Supporting the Community

On 27 June, Gordonvale Lions held their annual donations night where over $10,000 was donated to local organisations and sports clubs. It was great to see the presidents of junior clubs in Gordonvale representing AFL, Rugby League, Cricket, Soccer and Little Athletics all together discussing common ways of improving their clubs. Pictured above receiving a donation from left to right is Werner Baumeister Manager Disability Services St Johns Community Care, Shaun Gulliver and Lions President Barry Hardy. Shaun after being seriously injured in an accident is a resident of Young Lifestyle Care which is a residential facility that offers 24 hour care to young people with high and complex care/disabilities who are at risk of entering an aged care facility. YLC comprises of three houses in Gordonvale which are able to house five clients in each. At present the facility is home to fourteen clients.

Residents Divided over Gordonvale Woolworths Gordonvale residents continue to be divided over the construction of a new Woolworths shopping centre at the intersection of Draper Road and Bruce Highway.

Fabcot Development Pty Ltd, who are developers for the project have said that Gordonvale could do with a shopping facility as residents have to travel to Edmonton the get the same facilities.

After almost two years, a decision by the Planning and Environment Court Judge Michale Rackeman will be handed down in Brisbane on the 5th of August.

Woolworths are currently advertising for expressions of interest in relation to leasing opportunities on their website: woolworthsshoppingcentres.com.au

The proposal is to build a 3200 square metre shopping complex at Draper Road and the Bruce Highway which is seperate to the town centre. The Gordonvale Chamber of Commerce have said that they have never been opposed to such facilities but believe that it is in the wrong location and will take away business for the current town centre.

Included in this expression of interest are 8-10 specialty shops including Medical, Liquor, Fast Food, Bank, Fashion, Cafe and Hairdresser. The website also mentions opening Early 2014, subject to authority approvals. These approval will be decided on August 5th when the judge hands down his decision.
