Behana Gorge saved from quarrying

Treasurer and Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt has marked one year of the Palaszczuk Government being in office with the removal of the Behana Gorge Key Resource Area (KRA) from the Cairns Regional Plan. Mr Pitt said he was thrilled to have delivered on a hard fought election commitment for locals. “Officially removing the Behana Gorge Key Resource Area (KRA) from the Cairns Plan was the best way to celebrate one year of the Palaszczuk Government being in office,” he said. "Like many locals I've grown up going to Behana Gorge, and residents and visitors alike have swum, canoed, fished and bush walked there. “Locals now have the peace of mind of knowing that this iconic attraction will be forever protected for generations. "I want to congratulate campaigners Paul and Emily Rossi as well as Traditional Owner Clive Murray for their efforts. "People power has stopped this again - hopefully, finally for the last time. Let's hope that this issue is dead, buried, cremated. “I’d like to thank the Deputy Premier for recognising the negative impact that an extractive industry in this location would have on local scenic

qualities, tourism value, biodiversity, recreation activities and importantly the aboriginal cultural heritage in our area. “We promised the Palaszczuk Government would be one of consultation and locals can look forward with confidence to the future liveability of our community.” Deputy Premier and Minister for Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning, Jackie Trad, said the council produced a planning scheme that sets a clear direction for the future of Cairns. “I made sure that community concerns had been properly taken into account before I decided to approve the planning scheme,” Ms Trad said. “One of the issues I know the community has been particularly concerned about is the potential for an extractive industry to happen in a Key Resource Area (KRA) located on the road leading into Behana Gorge. “In approving the planning scheme, I have decided that the Behana Gorge Road KRA should not be shown in the scheme and I have taken action to remove the KRA from the State Planning Policy so it no longer applies to the scheme.”

Gordonvale Men’s Shed The process to establish a Men’s Shed in Gordonvale has commenced. The modern Men’s Shed is an updated version of the shed in the backyard that has long been a part of Australian culture. Men’s Sheds are springing up all around Australia. If you looked inside one you might see a number of men restoring furniture, perhaps restoring bicycles for a local school, maybe making Mynah bird traps or fixing lawn mowers or making a kids cubby house for Camp Quality to raffle. You might also see a few young men working with the older men learning new skills and maybe also learning something about life from the men they work with. You will see tea-bags, coffee cups and a comfortable area where men can sit and talk. You will probably also see an area where men can learn to cook for themselves or they can learn how to contact their families by computer. So what is so special about this new type of Men’s Shed? Most men have learned from our culture that they don’t talk about feelings and emotions. There has been little encouragement for men to take an interest in their own health and well-being. Unlike women, most men are reluctant to talk about their emotions and that means that they usually don’t ask for help. Probably because of this many men are less healthy than women, they drink more, take more risks and they suffer more from isolation, loneliness and depression. Relationship breakdown, retrenchment or early retirement from a job, loss of children following divorce, physical or mental illness are just some of the problems that men find it hard to deal with on their own. Good health is based on many factors including feeling good about yourself, being productive and valuable to your community, connecting to friends and maintaining an active body and an active mind. Becoming a member of a Men’s Shed gives a man that safe and busy environment where he can find many of these things in an atmosphere of old-fashioned mateship. And, importantly, there is no pressure. Men can just come and have a yarn and a cuppa if that is all they’re looking for.

Gordonvale Youth Fund Every Saturday morning a group of dedicated locals gather at the Gordonvale Hotel and run the Goose club where over 20 prizes are raffled. The prizes are donated by local businesses in the Gordonvale area and all proceeds go into a special fund. We at the Mulgrave News know how expensive it is send children away to sporting, cultural or school events, so we want to be in a position to help. If your child is selected to represent Gordonvale in some way, please contact us here at the Mulgrave News and we will try and assist where we can. Applications can be made by emailing: admin@mulgravenews.com.au or phoning our office on 4056 5877. A special thanks must go out to all the donators of the prizes, the hardworking locals who get together to make it all happen and of course management and staff at the Gordonvale Hotel.

Members of Men’s Sheds come from all walks of life - the bond that unites them is that they are men with time on their hands and they would like something meaningful to do with that time. A good Men’s Shed has a co-ordinator who has both the technical and social skills to develop a safe and happy environment where men are welcome to work a project of their choice in their own time and where the only ‘must’ is to observe safe working practices. All in a spirit of mateship. Anyone in Gordonvale interested in a local Mens Shed should contact Peter on 4056 5201 or mobile 0487 384 438.

Great Pyramid Race 5km Charity Event By Sandra Charlton The Great Pyramid Race 2016 will attract thousands of people in Gordonvale on Saturday 13th August. The 5km Charity Event (walk, push a pram or run) has been successful in both raising funds for a selected charity and also as a great team building activity. I have been part of the Gordonvale School Chaplaincy team, Hearts of Gold for the last two years. Last year our team comprised of over 40 people of the school community including teaching staff, parents, students and the school chaplaincy committee. The school community found it to be fun and they are expecting to enter a large group again this year. The Charity Event is an effective way to promote your organisation or business in the Gordonvale and wider community, enhance staff or volunteer morale; and raise funds for your designated charity - I encourage you to consider entering a team. It is a few months away so this gives you time to rally your workmates, team mates and friends together.

Construction on $1.7M Disability Housing Project underway

Community Calendar

A $1.7 million housing project to provide sustainable and long-term accommodation for up to nine people with disability in Gordonvale is now under construction. Turning the first sod at St John’s Community Care’s Young Life Style Centre, Queensland Treasurer and Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt said the project was a great example of how a public-private partnership could help to address Queensland’s shortage of appropriate disability accommodation. The Palaszczuk Government provided close to $1 million towards the facility through capital funding, with a further $700,000 contribution made by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, which oversees St John’s Community Care. “As part of the Elderly Parent Carer Innovation Initiative (EPCII), these three fourbedroom houses will provide permanent, safe and independent living for people with a disability who have elderly parent carers, as well as accommodation for three live-in carers,” Mr Pitt said. “This important project will help to address a shortfall in appropriate accommodation for people with disability, while also providing a sense of certainty for their ageing parents who can no longer care for them. EPCII is all about coming up with smart solutions, and I am pleased that with the help of local organisations like St John’s Community Care, we are seeing more of these projects get off the ground. Another benefit of this new housing is that it will help stimulate growth in the Far North, providing employment for more than 40 people during construction, with additional jobs for paid carers and benefits for local businesses once complete.” St John’s Community Care Chairman Theo Bacalakis said the state-of-the-art project would offer 24 hour care and would be a place for residents to enjoy new experiences and be empowered in a supported environment. “This project will benefit carers and individuals by giving them peace of mind for their future needs,” he said. “It will also create jobs for paid carers and businesses from the local community and construction work for local contractors. The project will provide employment for about 46 people during its construction and is being built by local company Bryant Construction. “The houses are expected to be completed in May.” Disability Services Minister Coralee O’Rourke said since 2013 the Queensland Government had invested almost $14 million to create 93 places for adults with disability through EPCII. “Our Government is proud to work with organisations like St John’s Community Care to enable people with disability to remain in their communities,” Mrs O’Rourke said. “The move to more independent living will also help families prepare for the transition to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), which is due to roll out in Queensland from July.” For more information on the Elderly Parent Carer Innovation Initiative visit: www.communities.qld.gov.au/disability/key-projects/elderly-parent-carerinnovation-initiative

Kath Moss the Gordonvale Seamstress Information supplied by Mulgrave Settlers Museum. Kath Moss was born in Gordonvale on the 5th October 1917. Her early childhood was spent in Mirriwinni and Gordonvale. She travelled once a week to Innisfail to learn “domestic science”, where she learnt to draft patterns and to sew. At 15 she went to work for a doctor in Atherton and here she made his wife an evening gown for a ball. From that “Kath – the Dressmaker” was born. Kath worked for her parents at the Commercial Hotel in Gordonvale before moving with them to the Aloomba Hotel, where she met and married her future husband Arthur. Their son Roy was born in 1940. They lived in Aloomba until they bought a cane farm at “Pyramid”, where they farmed for many years before moving to Bellenden Ker. After ill health they moved to Gordonvale in 1997. When Arthur died, Kath moved to the Pyramid Retirement Centre in Gordonvale, when she spent many a happy day still at her sewing machine. Wedding dresses made by Kath Moss are now on display in Curtis Pitt’s window. The Mulgrave Settlers Museum has several photos from Kath Moss, of people wearing one of her hand made dresses. Come and have a cuppa and help us identify the people in the photos and any other information, or contact the Museum on 4056 1810, Monday-Saturday from 10am-2pm.

Robyn’s Real Estate Read Welcome to this month's Editorial of all things Real Estate. Can I Subdivide my Property? I am often asked this question by both sellers and buyers. There are a few things to consider: 1. Zoning - The Cairns Regional Council and QLD State Government have a Planning Scheme for the Region. They wish to avoid urban sprawl and change of use of viable Agricultural land therefore Rural 1 zoned properties must be at least 80 ha in order to divide them into 2 parcels of land. Closer to an Urban Regional City such as Cairns you may be able to divide smaller parcels of land such as in Plantation Estate in Edmonton and the Mount Peter area. 2. Overlays - Council will need to refer to Third Parties such as D.E.R.M. and Water Catchment regarding possible sensitive flora, fauna or water management overlays. 3. Code Assessable or Public Consultation - If your property meets all the requirements you will only be Code Assessable and not required to seek public approval for your project. If you would like to receive more information about this topic or a Listing Checklist on how to maximise your selling price or are looking for a no obligation appraisal of your biggest asset in today's market please give me a call or email for an honest and confidential chat about your real estate needs: Robyn Hawley-Whitton, Mob: 0488 071 007 or Email: robynhw@cpo.com.au

Unique ANZAC Service A unique ANZAC service being hosted by the Pyramid Highleigh Freemasons this year, the Ceremony of the Vacant Chair. The Ceremony of the Vacant Chair is a service traditionally held as part of a memorial service for a brother who has passed away and was adapted many years ago to form part of a remembrance service and honour the service men and women who paid the ultimate price during conflict. This service has been held in the Gordonvale RSL hall the last few years but due to the unfortunate situation with the hall, this year the ceremony is being held in the lodge rooms on Swan Street, Gordonvale. This year, once again, we welcome the assistance of the Bentley Park, Endeavour and Bartle Frere lodges, Naval

Chaplain Reverend Ian Lindsay, the Gordonvale RSL, Gordonvale Catholic Choir, Army Cadets and guest speaker Brigadier George Mansford AO (retd). The ceremony begins at 7.30pm on Tuesday the 20th of April at the Gordonvale Freemasons Centre, Swan Street Gordonvale and is open to the general public.

Robyn’s Bowen Therapy & Emmett Technique

Lymphedema Lymphedema, also known as lymphatic obstruction, is a condition of localized fluid retention and tissue swelling in one arm or leg and is caused by a compromised lymphatic system. This lady first came to me after 4 years of fluid in her left leg from the knee down. It was not only very uncomfortable and quite painful but she felt very self-conscious as well. She needed to wear a compression stocking every day all day and long pants, which in summer is extremely uncomfortable as you can imagine. She was told that nothing could be done and had resigned herself to that. I was so pleased that she decided to try alternative treatment and after the first session her leg had reduced considerably. After several treatments her calf and foot were defined and she was so excited about the results. I see her every two weeks now and there is only some swelling around her ankle and the compression stocking is only put on in the afternoon if she has been on her feet all day. The change in her is so wonderful to see and she also has more quality of life. Soon she will be back to wearing dresses and shorts with pride. Whatever issue you may have it is always worth trying out some alternative treatment.
