“Letting the local people know”

GARY RETIRES WOOLWORTHS

After 47 years in the postal industry Gary from the Gordonvale Post Office is finally hanging up his keys and moving into retirement.

The future of Woolworths in Gordonvale is now set to be decided in the planning and environment Court after the Cairns Regional Council once again voted to oppose the development on the Western side of the Bruce Highway on the 27th of June 2012.

Gary is a well known and loved member of the Gordonvale community and commenced his career with Australia Post in November 1965. Gary was presented with a plaque by Member of Mulgrave Curtis PITT on Friday the 29th of June 2012 as recognition of his contribution to the Gordonvale community.

The Gordonvale chamber of commerce is not against the development of Woolworths, just opposed to the location and would be happy for a similar shopping complex built on the Town side of the Highway.

Gary said that he didn’t have any immediate plans on Monday and it will take a little while for it all to sink in. He ensures that apart from a few trips around the country side he will still live in Gordonvale. Thanks for great service over the years and enjoy your well earned retirement.

The original project was to include a supermarket, petrol station, 10 to 12 specialty shops and two takeaway outlets and would have created 200 retail jobs, 110 construction jobs and would also generate about $5.9 million in salary and wages into the local area.

Local Business Guide

The 4320 square metre complex was earmarked for the intersection of Draper Road and the Bruce Highway and in May 2011 council rejected the application siting 20 grounds for rejecting the construction including the bulky design, the impact on local retailers and was too far away from Gordonvales town centre.

It is widely believed that the supermarket and specialty shops planned for the shopping centre would have a direct and negative impact on many of the local business owners in the town centre.

In May 2012 Woolworths once again presented their case to the council with amended plans including the scaling down of the project to 3200 square metres and included 8 specialty shops instead of 12 and 1 takeaway food shop instead of 2. However this was again rejected by a majority of 9-1. The community is divided on whether Woolworths should go ahead.

Robyn's Real EVONNE CAWLEY SAVANNAHS OPENING Estate Read A number of youths in Gordonvale were the beneficiaries of some expert tuition by Former Wimbeldon tennis champion Evonne Cawley when she made a special visit to Gordonvale last month.

Welcome to this month's update. The big news in Real Estate this month is very positive - the new Queensland government is reinstating the transfer d u t y h o m e concession from 1st July, 2012.

Evonne conducted a coaching clinic for about 50 young up and coming indigenous tennis stars at the Gordonvale Tennis Courts in Norman Park. Evonne kept a watchful eye on the youths and during the coaching sessions passed on some her knowledge and skills and spoke about her early days of tennis.

If you purchase a home for $330,000 in June 2012 and you are an owner occupier it will cost you $9,375 in Stamp Duty whereas now it is only $3,300. The rule of thumb is that it is 1% of the purchase price up to $350,000 and then a sliding scale is implemented. First home owners are not charged stamp duty up to a $505,000 purchase. Investors are not entitled to the discount. Due to this pending change in legislation we have seen a quiet month in June with many people waiting till July to purchase. A number of special guests were in attendance in Gordonvale on Saturday the 30th of June 2012 for the opening of Savannahs Flowers, Gifts and café in Norman Street.

The café’s owner Nancy opened the shop as a lasting memory to her infant daughter Savannah who passed away from illness in 2010. The café was officially opened by retired Queensland police commissioner Jim O’Sullivan who paid tribute to Nancy’s hard work and dedication to the project.

1971 was a highlight of her career, as she won the French Open, the British Hard Court Championships and Wimbledon.

Other special guests included assistant Police Commissioner to the far northern region Katarina Carrol, Division 1 councillor Steve Brain and a number of other guests. The opening was followed by morning tea inside the café.

Evonne followed this when in 1980 she gained her second Wimbledon title before retiring in 1983. In 1988 Evonne was inducted in the international tennis hall of fame.

The shop is filled with many different gifts for something different and is a lovely place to enjoy a cup of coffee amongst lovely surroundings. The café includes a small children’s play area which will give you time away from the children.

BOWEN PAIN RELIEF TESTIMONIAL When the pain from severe arthritis in my neck and shoulders became unbearable, and not wanting to become dependent on powerful painkillers, which was the only option offered to me by my medical practitioner, I decided to take my neighbor’s advice and contact Robyn John of Robyn’s Bowen Therapy and Emmett Technique. It was the best decision I could have made as I felt a level of relief from the debilitating pain after only two sessions and was sleeping better as well. I know it is not a cure but whilst ever I get drug free pain relief I shall continue with this wonderful therapy. Thank you Robyn, for your gentle, relaxing methods which work and for being available in the Gordonvale area. W.M. – Gordonvale 2012

RECOGNITION OF SERVICE By Wendy Maddocks & Tina Elmer On the 26th April, 2012 an historic presentation was made at Norman Park Tennis Courts, site of the original WW11 United States parachute packing sheds. Margaret Maclean Clarke and Marie Sondergard Field, believed to be the last two surviving “Parabelles”, packed parachutes for the United States 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment in WW11, and, just on seventy years later, in recognition of their service, they received Certificates of Appreciation for Patriotic Civil Service from Colonel Thomas Wahlert of the United States Embassy in Canberra. The Certificate stated: “For exceptional meritorious civilian service while serving as a Parachute Rigger for the 503D Infantry Regiment (Airborne). Your professionalism, expertise, dedication to solders and selfless service directly contributed to the success of the regiment’s airborne operations. Your excellent performance reflects great credit upon you, the 503rdD Infantry Regiment (Airborne), the 173D Airborne Brigade Combat Team and the United States Army.” The moving and happy occasion was attended by about thirty guests and the Maclean/Clarke family was represented by members from four generations. Margaret said that she was: “..delighted to accept the award on behalf of all the women who helped in the war effort. I’m sure they would have been very pleased that what we did is being recognized. Women have lots of opportunities now, and I am pleased to see that young women are taking those opportunities and working at them.” After the presentations, “catch-up” time with friends, well-wishers, and media interviews, everyone enjoyed a “walk-around” to view the 503rd plaque at the library, the parachute mosaic at the base of the “Hoe Man” statue and the 503rd emblem on top of the lamp post on the corner Norman and Gordon Streets. Then over to the Park View Hotel to see the US Red Cross mosaic on the footpath and in to the RSL for a delicious morning tea provided by the Ladies Auxiliary. It was a very special, historic and happy morning, one that will long be remembered by all those who attended.

HARVEST CABARET REVIVAL The Harvest Cabaret held in the RSL hall in Gordonvale is set to become a major annual event if you listen to the buzz around the town. A group of locals were reminiscing about the previous harvest cabaret’s and decided it was time to make a revival. A special mention must go to Mandy Moore and Steve Brain for their dedication and energy in guiding the committee to a successful night. The Roaring 20’s themed ball attended by 250 people at the RSL hall on the 26th May, was held to raise money for the Palliative Care Unit at the Gordonvale Hospital. With the help of the community $12000 was raised and a cheque was handed to Mrs Pat Hickling on the night. The fantastic 1 RAR First Battalion Military Brass Band played a huge part of setting the mood and getting the dancers into the swing of things. Their wide range of music and absolute talent was amazing. The floor show by AC/DC, Susan Boyle, Meatloaf, FAMAO, The Scottsman, and Joey Curcuruto was, as usual, outstanding. The crowd were once again astonished by the local talent! Prize money for the night was donated by the Gordonvale Lions Club. The ‘Roaring 20’s’ Best Dressed were – Best Dressed Female Madonna Archibald, Best Dressed Male Wade Fraser Best Dressed Couple, Raquel and Darrin Williams, Best Dressed Group Desley Ferrando & Co. Thank you to all the local businesses from Gordonvale to Cairns to Babinda for their donations of food, gift vouchers and prizes for raffles. Your generosity was greatly appreciated. Thank you to Julie Wilson (Julie’s Tasty Treats) for her knowledge and expertise in catering to deliver a hot and tasty meal. Thank you to the Gordonvale Lions Club and Gordonvale Hospital Auxillery Ladies for their donations of cakes and slices and much needed help on the night. Last but not least thank you to the Gordonvale RSL for the use of the hall on the night and for our regular meetings. *Friday night meals.
