GREAT PYRAMID MOUNTAIN RACE It began 53 years ago, in a local Gordonvale pub, with two cane farmers having an ‘argument’ after the end of a hard day’s work. They decided to settle this ‘argument’, with a race to the peak of the nearby Walsh’s Pyramid. This was (and still is) no ordinary race, and is often described as “a never ending uphill scramble and a ‘controlled’ downhill free fall”. A wager was made between the two cane farmers to see who could run up in the quickest possible time. This race created so much interest that the local bookie took bets on which cane farmer was ‘right’. From this humorous start, it has grown to a full day event with the “Great Pyramid Mountain Race” now having up to 150 runners. Since the race began, the training for the competition has gone from “no training at all and chasing wild pigs in the scrub”, to “intense training programmes for dedicated athletes”. Now recognized on the National Race Endurance Calendar and part of the Australian Mountain Running Association Calendar and with TransTasman links and other international attention, it has made this Mountain Challenge a “Great Race”. The Great Pyramid Race and Country Fair is now held every year in August in the small community of Gordonvale, 24kms south of Cairns, attracting several thousand spectators - local, interstate and international tourists. Festival activities include the main event - the Great Pyramid Race, as well as
other sporting activities on this day include a 5km Road Race, and a 1500 metre dash around Norman Park. There will also be a diverse selection of performers, musicians, workshops and roving entertainers to keep the crowds enthralled. This year sees great representation from local businesses, organisations, school groups and individuals – all committed to showcasing the unique community of Gordonvale, culminating in Fireworks and a headlining Act. The current record for the 12km race stands at 1:15:34 set in 2007 by Neil Labinsky, a mountain specialist runner from the Sunshine Coast. Last year the race was won by local ultratrail runner Chris White who also came 2nd in 2010. Also lining up is current world ultra-ironman champion Mike La Roux also having his run on the mountain. The women’s record is more long standing, being set in 1997 (1:32:06) by local runner Anita Appleby. Deahanne Turnbull from Townsville came to within seconds of this time in 2010. There has also been keen interest
from many interstate runners, and being unknown to the local running scene, any one of them could surprise on the day. This year’s event is shaping up to be a vibrant celebration of the community. There will be plenty of fun with a diverse selection of free workshops running all day with Drum Up Big and Circus, performers, musicians, jumping castles, pony rides, roving entertainers including the Cairns Festival ‘Gremlins’ and mural painting run by the Gordonvale Hub. Not to mention market stalls and delicious food! The 2012 Pyramid Race program kicks off at 7am Saturday August 11 with the markets, followed by a full days entertainment in Norman Park and of course the great Pyramid race at 2pm. ERGON CARE UPGRADE State Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt has welcomed the next stage of Ergon Energy’s Cyclone Area Reliability Enhancement (CARE) project. Mr Pitt said the next stage will include a $3.4 million power upgrade for the Gordonvale community. “The upgrade promises better reliability of supply during storms and cyclones while catering for future growth in the growing southern suburbs, building on the Edmonton project completed in 2010,” Mr Pitt said. “The design work will be completed by the end of July with civil construction work set to start by the end of October. This will be followed by the necessary cabling work with the project expected to be completed by March 2013. “CARE projects are about network reinforcement and power reliability and undergrounds power supply into important community facilities and will also provide for a more secure backbone supply into local residential areas. “It’s good to know that essential services like sewerage will be operational in times of emergency, and other
important community staples like local shops and schools can be open to ensure things get back to normal for the township as soon as possible.”

DEB ARMSTRONG THE BROCHURE LADY By Wendy Maddocks - PART 1 Deb Armstrong has delivered advertising material with the Cairns Sun to 2000 Gordonvale households, once a week for the past four and a half years.
This helps prevent giving the impression the owner is away. Deb doesn’t deliver to vacant premises and she also ensures the delivery is placed in the receptacle in a secure and tidy manner so that the wind can’t create an unsightly mess.
The company she works for has a policy: “If last weeks’ deliveries are still in the letterbox, no further delivery is added thus preventing the accumulation of material and keeping it free for postal deliveries.”
“I love my job,” says Deb. “I work my own hours, give a friendly wave to many folk, say hello to their pets...and the kids think I’m the Postie. Makes my day!
DRILLING TO COMMENCE Cairns Regional Council advises that investigative drilling works will commence along Moller Road, adjacent to Behana Creek, Aloomba on Monday, July 23. The works will include drilling of several ground water monitoring bores that will measure ground water level fluctuations during the dry season and assist investigations into the feasibility of the Mulgrave River Aquifer as a supplementary drinking water supply for Cairns. There will be no disruption to traffic, however there may be some low level noise while the drilling takes place between 7am and 6pm daily. The works are expected to be completed by August 10, weather permitting. Council thanks residents for their patience and cooperation during these necessary investigative works. 4
TOTAL ECLIPSE IN GORDONVALE A total eclipse of the sun will occur over Gordonvale in the early morning of 14 November 2012. The eclipse will commence at 5.45am and the total eclipse will be at 6.38am and last for a period of 1 minute and 47 seconds. The last total solar eclipse in Cairns area was in 710 AD and the next one won’t be until April 25, 2237. An eclipse of the Sun occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun and completely covers the Sun. This casts a shadow that moves across the Earth's surface in what is called the Path of Totality. You must be in the Path of Totality to see the total eclipse. The Cairns region is in the Path and is perfectly located to experience the full awe inspiring event. At the time of the Total Eclipse, the sky will go very dark with a glowing light around the horizon, planets and bright stars will be visible and the Sun's spectacular outer atmosphere (the Corona) will appear. Scientists have warned never look directly at the Sun or you may cause serious and permanent damage to your eyesight. The Queensland Government has provided advice on safe methods to observe the eclipse. A 140 kilometre wide shadow will be cast across the Cairns region, blanketing everything in darkness as the moon passes in front of the sun for a brief moment in time. The exact time of the start of the total eclipse will depend on where on the shadow path you are.

Welcome to August and the new layout of the Councillor Corner. I will try and keep folks of the Mulgrave updated with council news and in conjunction with Mark Edwards maintain updated information from the Hub.
One of the key areas that people thought has been lacking of recent times from our country town is a little self pride. Pride in our community, our streets and our town centre. Certainly Council needs to do its bit but so do the traders in town and so do residents. For my part there, I will ensure Norman Park is mowed and cleaned before each market day and streets are swept every week as they are now.

The Mulgrave and District Chamber of Commerce have decided to host a Town Centre working bee on 5th of August from 9am. They are encouraging all landlords, business owners and members of our community to come along and help spruce up the town and inject a little enthusiasm. There will be lunch and drinks provided. Now orientation is complete, my aim is to try and work out of the office attached to the Gordonvale library on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Often I will not be just sitting there as visits to folks places are often the best way to get a handle on issues, so I will be out and about. I wanted people to have the opportunity to ask questions on wide topics in regard to Council operations. The obvious one was the Council decision to vote against the Woolworths development on the Highway. I was not trying to defend the decision so much as explaining the rationale behind it and I was glad for the opportunity. Since this meeting, a court date has been set for 28 November 12. Two days will be heard in Cairns and the rest of the court case will be held in Brisbane in the Planning and Environment Court.
A key outcome of the forum was the creation or re-creation of the Gordonvale Focus Group. It is to be a progress type group of citizens that will meet every 6 weeks and have council staff attend as well as myself - the Councillor, to be able to work with the community first hand. We all agreed many hands make light work and we will only take on projects one step at a time. It was decided to tackle Norman Park first. So we aim to prioritise a plan for Norman Park and will include the options for the water tower, footpaths all the way around, BBQs and the like. Paul Gregory has told me an old plan can be found in council records so I will dig that up. PITT WELCOMES NEW STATION Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt has welcomed the official opening of the new Gordonvale Ambulance Station, attended by Minister for Community Safety, Jack Dempsey.

"The new station accommodates a 24-hour roster of 11 staff, with facilities including office accommodation, two rest/study rooms, a five bay plant room, and associated staff amenities.
Mr Pitt said that since the 2009 state election he had been lobbying the government for an improved facility at Gordonvale. "The existing ambulance station was constructed in 1946 and despite extensive upgrades over the years it was no longer suitable to meet the needs of the community," Mr Pitt said. “The recent expansion of Gordonvale, especially on the western side of the Bruce Highway was putting stress on the service. "The initial plan was to demolish the old ambulance building and rebuild on the existing site, however the community was concerned that a new building would not be in keeping with the Gordonvale 'character precinct'.
“Local residents can rest assured that the Cliff Trembath Memorial Training Room, which plays a valuable role within our community is part of the new centre." Mr Pitt said the future of the old ambulance station remains uncertain. "The usual practice is for obsolete buildings to be offered to other government departments, then other levels of government. If there is no interest they are offered for sale usually by tender or auction. “I would hope that any future development on the Cannon Street site can retain the facade in keeping with the character precinct."There is also a de-mountable building on the site which I hope can be retained in the community and used by a community group."

RAY-LEE AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 16 year old Ray–Lee Russel has been singing since she could talk, playing piano since she was 7 and at the age of 13 taught herself to play the guitar. Hailing from Gordonvale Ray-Lee Russell was selected to represent Australia at the 16th World Championships of Performing Arts in Hollywood, Los Angeles in June of this year. This event is the biggest in the world with more than 55 countries attending in the performance fields of vocal, bands, instrumentalist, actors, models, variety acts and dancers. Smokin' Joe Robinson (Australia's Got Talent Winner 2009) was the Grand Champion of The World in 2009. Since that time Australia has had a wealth of talent score major recording deals, management and touring deals with major labels and also thousands of dollars in study scholarships worldwide. Ray Lee flew with the Australian Team leaving Australia on the 28th June 2012 and return to Gordonvale on the 18th of July 2012.
