Editor’s Note What a difference a month makes Within the last month We have had the beginning of the George Zimmerman trial in the death of Trayvon Martin, The striking down of a key component of the voting rights act, and the striking down of DOMA and Prop 8. While we have had the setback from the voting rights act decision, we have the great strides. With DOMA gay and Lesbian married couples now have the right to the same federal entitlements and heterosexual couples. With the decision in the Prop 8 case, same-sex marriages can resume in the state of California. This decision is also a big step toward same sex couples being able to sue for the right to marry in other states. Gay and Lesbian Americans still have an up-hill battle on their hands to truly be free to marry wherever they want but it seems like more of an inevitability than a fantasy. With the Zimmerman trial, The family now has the opportunity to have a jury decide whether Zimmerman is responsible for the death of Trayvon Martin or if he was just defending himself. On the national side, This trial is seen as another instance of a black life not being worth defending. Scores of people were outraged when Mr. Zimmerman was never arrested for the killing of Trayvon Martin. Soon we will have the jury’s decision in this matter. But the real issue here is the Stand your ground law that was used so he wasn’t arrested. America, clearly have a long road ahead. Lessons We Can Lear n Fr o m Reality TV Star s Reality television has brought us some very interesting and colorful characters in the recent past. While many people view reality television as a guilty pleasure, others are finding that (in certain aspects of their lives) they are no different than the women spotlighted in this article. As we take a look at the journey of each of these women, each of us can find life lessons in where they started and how they got to the places they are now. I’m sure there are many more lessons to be learned from these women (good and bad), but let’s look at the lessons we can learn from each of them so far.
Nene Leakes Linnethia Monique Leakes (known as Nene Leakes) busted onto the scene in fall 2008 as one of the five women select to represent the Atlanta version (some would say the black version) of the Real Housewives franchise. Driven strongly by her explosive personality and snappy one-liners, The Real Housewives of Atlanta became an instant hit. She has had epic arguments with almost all of her current and past castmates and she continues to stand. Over the 5 seasons the show has aired, she has constantly evolved her character and gained the hearts of numerous fans. She became a New York Times best-selling author and a bonefide actress appearing on the highly successful TV series Glee and Celebrity Apprentice. This past year she even became a co-star on NBC’s The New Normal. Bravo has decided to produce a spinoff chronicling her second wedding to her ex-husband Gregg Leakes entitled “I Dream of Nene”. Lesson: Make the money. Don’t let the money make you.
Joseline Hernandez Joseline Hernandez, the breakout star of Love and Hip Hop-Atlanta is a feisty Puerto Rican mami from Miami, Florida. She has caused quite a stir in the first two seasons of the show. Firstly, her womanhood has been called into question by many who believed that she was actually a man; a post-op transsexual to be exact. So she released nude pictures and a video of herself nude to try and squelch those rumors. It basically worked because most people (but not all) have moved on from that rumor. She is one-part of a love triangle between 15 year couple Stevie J. and Mimi Faust. That storyline continues to run the spectrum as you can never tell if Stevie is cheating on Joseline with Mimi or if it’s the other way around. Either way both women seem determined to keep him in their lives. Joseline is an aspiring music entertainer (we are still waiting on her music to be released). She has a very colorful past ranging from alleged prostitution to stripping. Still she continues to be the woman people love or they love to hate but either way, she is making an impact on them.

Lessons We Can Lear n Fr o m Reality TV Star s Mimi Faust Mimi Faust is the woman that most hate to love. She continues to be with a man that cannot be faithful to her and is actually not trying to hide his being unfaithful. Mimi Faust has been in a relationship with Stevie J. for about 15 years. They have a daughter together Mimi has admitted that Stevie J has been unfaithful most of the time they’ve been together and the latest person that he has strayed with is Joseline. Many women can relate to Mimi’s situation, being in love with a man that will not commit. Your head tells you to leave but your heart keeps you there, so you continually make excuses to stay in the relationship. In the second season, it seems that Mimi has been able to finally move on. She started dating a new man. But Stevie doesn’t give up so easily. He ends up buying her a BMW and presents it to her in front of her new man. (Serious player move) She seems to see a different side of him. But we all know he is actively in a relationship with Joseline. Most women say that she should leave him alone. But that is very hard to do when your heart keeps pulling you back in. Lesson: Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me for 15 years…….
Erica Dixon Erica Dixon is one of the most loved cast members of the hit reality show Love and Hip HopAtlanta. She has a young daughter with hip-hop artist Lil Scrappy. In the two seasons of the show we have seen here journey to rebuild the love and trust in her relationship with Lil Scrappy as they care for their daughter after his decision to pursue another relationship with a female rapper named Diamond. Throughout the two seasons we see how she deals with a soon to be mother-in-law that would rather her son date a different woman. In the end, Erica won out and received a wedding proposal on during the taping of the reunion show. In preparing for the wedding we see how she continues to deal with a mother-in-law to be that is hell-bent on breaking up her relationship, a fiancé that is still communicating with other women and her fiancé’s ex that won’t let go of the past. Through all of this Erica remains a strong woman ready to give it all up her happiness. Lesson: Own your situation and stand strong.

Lessons We Can Lear n Fr o m Reality TV Star s Sheree Whitfield Sheree Whitfield seemed to be a tell it like it is kind of woman. Her on-again, off-again relationship with Nene Leakes made for good television but her character never seemed to develop a real storyline for the viewer. It always seemed that just as she had an interesting storyline to develop it would crash and burn. From her She by Sheree clothing line to acting classes to suing her ex-husband for child support, viewers were never given a decent storyline. She seemed to be plagued with financial problems while trying to portray herself living a most fabulous life. Many seemed to view her as a fake, drifting from one career path to the next. Even after not returning to the series after 4 seasons, Sheree continued to struggles to find her place. She has tried stage plays, being a guest panelist for different shows, and was even featured on Iyanla Vanzant’s Fix My Life. The very unfortunate fact about Sheree is that people are constantly looking to see what she will fail at next. It is not a good thing to view yourself as a success when everyone around you sees you as a joke. Lesson: What you see is not always what you get.
Phaedra Parks The storyline of Phaedra Parks started out like a southern romance novel. We have Phaedra Parks, A high powered attorney from Athens, GA. She has married the love of her life. A handsome, physically fit younger man named Apollo Nida. From the outside her life appears to be all Cherries Jubilee. But we find out that Phaedra has done the best job in painting a flawless picture of her life. In reality, the flaws start to show through the fake southern charm. Phaedra is married to Apollo Nida, an ex-con who served 5 months in jail after being convicted of theft by receiving stolen property. He was later convicted of racketeering and served almost 5 years in prison before being released on parole in July of 2009. Phaedra and Apollo were married in November of 2009 and had their first child in May 2010. This fact also created another flaw her southern belle persona because Ayden being born in May would allegedly mean that he was conceived before they were married. Not very southern belle-like behavior. Phaedra has decided to become the new Sheree Whitfield, starting a new business each episode. Through the course of Phaedra’s storyline she has decided to jump into many different business ventures; a partnership with Willie Watkins to open a funeral service, a pet funeral service, a fitness video and most recently creating a stun-gun line. Lesson: When you pretend to be perfect, all people will be able to see are your imperfections.

Lessons We Can Lear n Fr o m Reality TV Star s Kenya Moore Kenya Moore states in her tagline that she won “Miss America not Miss Congeniality”. And she absolutely proved that in her freshman season on the Real Housewives of Atlanta. While she became the breakout star of the season, even overshadowing Ms. Nene Leakes to become the star of season five. Basically everywhere she went, she was the center of attention. She came into the series a newbie to Atlanta, looking to settle down and get married. Her storyline revolved around tensions with Porsha Stewart and Cynthia Bailey, but the main event was with “boyfriend” Walter Jackson. This relationship proved to be her best friend and worst enemy. As it was depicted on the show viewers, myself included, believed that Kenya was dating Walter, but it never seemed as serious as Kenya made it out to be. It always felt like Kenya was making the relationship more than what it was. Kenya seemed to be on a mission to be married and Walter was the guy that could make that happens. Most of the other ladies on the show saw the same thing and many expressed this very fact. Even after this relationship faded away, Kenya created much more drama throughout the show, from her constant battling with Porsha Stewart to her decision to release a rival buttexercise video when talks to produce a video for Phaedra fell through. Kenya set out to let Atlanta know that she had arrived and world is now taking a good look at her. I’m not sure that this was the image that she wanted them to see. Lesson: Being in the spotlight is not always a good thing.
Kandi Burress Kandi Burress is a cast member of the Real housewives of Atlanta. She proves that nothing can stop a woman on a mission. Throughout her time on the series, we have seen her go through the death of her fiancé AJ Jewell, find new love and launch 2 successful businesses. The business ventures that Kandi has jumped into have become widely successful from her clothing boutique Tags to her Bedroom Kandi line of adult toys All the while, she remained relevant in the music world by creating a hit recording for fellow castmate Kim Zolziak. Kandi has proven to be a savvy business woman. Currently engaged to Todd Tucker, a line producer for the show, she continues to find happiness in all aspects of her life. Lesson: Know your strengths and maintain your focus.

Lessons We Can Lear n Fr o m Reality TV Star s Trina Braxton Younger sister to Toni Braxton, Trina Braxton is a wife, mother, part of the singing group The Braxtons and an aspiring solo singer. Her story line throughout the show revolves around her marriage to Gabriel Solis, who became known for a nude photo internet leak from online sexting with another woman during their marriage. This discovery led to a shocking revelation from Trina that she engaged in an ‘oral transaction’ with a male bandmate. This was even more shocking because she was able to quickly dismiss her actions while consistently reminding Gabe of his. She was even able to find a way to justify blaming Gabe for her ‘transaction’. Through all of this, they decided to work things out and ended up renewing their wedding vows in a ceremony in St. Lucia. Just when the couple seemed to be moving forward this season, Trina filed for divorce after the season ended. Lesson: All is not always fair in love and war
Tamar Braxton Tamar Braxton, Toni Braxton’s youngest sister always has an opinion about someone else’s situation but cannot handle the critique of her own situations. Tamar has been the breakout star of Braxton Family Values, the reality series about Toni Braxton and her sisters. Tamar is married to highly successful music manager Vincent Herbert. In a short two seasons, we have seen Tamar rise to become a force to be recognized. Wanting to get out of the shadow of her older sister Toni, Tamar set a course to become the next Beyoncé. With two previous albums released in 1998 and 1999 that were viewed as less than successful, she was still searching for the solo fame that she knew was within her grasp. Throughout the series, we see the struggle she has with her sisters and her pesky advice into everyone’s affairs. All of her meddling and snappy catchphrases made her highly popular and even helped her to receive a spinoff series “Tamar and Vince” The success she craved was soon to follow with the release of the single ‘Love and War”. The single shot to the top of the charts instantly. Shortly after the singles release, she revealed that she was pregnant. She recently gave birth to her first child, Logan Vincent Herbert.

The ‘L’ Word by Rafael Solece
He said I Love You and I gagged. He waited for a response but I had nothing to give him. I liked him sure, but love him? That was completely out of the question. I just did not feel that way and if the truth be told, neither did he. He was just saying it because he thought that it was the right thing to say at the moment. Do not get me wrong I am sure his feelings for me were intense, but love? I don't think so. He just really liked me. Sometimes that intense like can be confused with love. So, I can understand why he might have thought that what he felt was actually love. We have all been guilty of making that same mistake at least a thousand times in our lives. I mean how many times in your life have you said the "L" word and actually meant it? More than you can count I am sure. We all do it. Use the "L" word like we have diarrhea of the mouth: spitting out "I love you's" to every Tony, Derrick, and Harris we meet. When the truth is, you just really LIKE them a whole lot. The problem is not that people are incapable of recognizing their feelings, but that folks just don't know how to be up front. Why is it that people don't have the ability to be more honest and say what they really feel? Why are folks so quick to blurt out things like I Love You: when half the time they don't even know what it means? Do not get me wrong. I have nothing against people being dangerously in love. In fact, I think love is a many splendored thing, and all that jazz. There is nothing wrong with using the "L" word. However, there is something wrong with lying and that is exactly what a lot of us are doing when we tell someone we love them instead of just saying: You know I just LIKE you a whole lot. 27

The ’L’ Word by Rafael Solece I have a theory: now stay with me. We, meaning people, don't know how to say what it is we feel because we are pre-programed from birth, like those automated pre-recorded voice messaging systems. Someone says I love you and you automatically say I love you too. Someone screws you six ways from Sunday and not a day right, the next thing you know you’re screaming ‘I love you’ at the top of your lungs. You kiss someone just the right way and before you can get to the car they have professed their undying love for you. It's all an automatic response. It feels natural; no matter how wrong it really is. We just don't know how to express those other feelings as easily. It doesn't sound right to tell someone ‘I am infatuated with you’ or ‘I lust for you’. Not even if that is exactly how you feel. Then there are those of us who use Love as a weapon to prey on the weak and vulnerable. They say I love you as a means to an end; just to get something they want. Men tell women they love them all the time. Not because they do, but because they know that it’s what a women wants to hear and if you tell a woman what she wants to hear you are more likely to get her to do what you want her to do. Saying I love you can be the equivalent to having the keys to the kingdom or a very strong set of chains. Once you've said the "L" word you can open any door or imprison anybody; if that is what you want. But the "L" word is not a weapon. It's a gift that you give someone and in some cases, yourself. If you say it with meaning and honesty, but how often does that happen? How often do we really mean to use the "L" word? How often do we use it in the right context? How often do we really know if love is what we are really feeling? I suppose the real reason I didn't say I loved him back was because I don't think you can love someone without being in love with them. I suppose, I should have at least said the other "L" word. 28

But my boyfriend seems to feel that we spend too much time together and assumes that something must be going on. The more I try to reassure him the more he accuses me. I think he just wants me to cut all ties with him. But he has proven to me over and over again that he is a true friend. We just happen to have a past. How do I get my boyfriend to understand that there is nothing going on and there never will be? The problem here is no one wants to be the person that was cheated especially by someone that you feel shouldn’t be there in the first place. In this situation something will have to give or you will lose your man for your ex. So you have to make a decision. I think you should cool it with your ex and focus your attention on your man. Maybe at a later time when he is more secure in the relationship, he’ll be able to handle a casual friendship with the ex. But this will take some time. And you also have to be prepared for the fact that he might not ever be cool with the friendship. But I think you should cool it for now for the sake of your relationship.
