Publisher’s Note Hello Mocca Readers! The end of the year is right around the corner. As we prepare for the season of giving, now is the time for us to reflect back on our journey through 2014. I’m sure there have been many high and low points that have taken place in your life throughout the year. As you sit and reflect, make sure you find an appreciation for the joys that have taken place over the year. As you also reflect on the lower points of the year, make sure you clearly understand why they were your low points, so you can work toward not having those same experiences in 2015. This is also a great time to look at the people and things that you have in your life. This might be an excellent time to do some spring cleaning of your toxic friendships and situations so that those things don’t carry themselves into your life for the new year. Vow to make a clean start with 2015. Don’t hold on to past hurt. Forgive and move on. This will only make your life better. If you continue to hold on to bad experiences or past hurts, they will invade your new experiences and corrode them Keeping these bad influences in your life will not llow your future endeavors to be as good as they possibly could be. Making a fresh start will enable you to fully appreciate the new situations without old guilt and bad feelings festering on the fringes. 2015 can and should be one of the greatest years for you in any aspect that you put your mind to. But don’t start it out on a bad note. Now is the time to do some self-reflection. Find those element that have held you back for far too long and release them before the new year. We Are Here And We Were There Too by Craig Washington Every year, in observance of World AIDS Day journalists, health departments, clinics and AIDS service organizations are cued to spew loads of HIV statistics and trends. As the hardest hit community, Black gay, bisexual and other queer men are usually prominently featured as the lead story within these stories. Black heterosexual women and white gay men are similarly highlighted, yet mainstream media covers both with far more complexity and topic diversity. Though disproportionately HIV burdened, they are not relegated to the margins of HIV crisis coverage as we are. Others are generally acknowledged in terms of individual achievement, social identity, cultural and political activity. In essence, they are treated as communities while Black gay men are mostly profiled as populations. Our culture and our histories, the elements and rituals that bind us are ignored or stripped of fuller meanings. Transgender women, latino, Asian and Native American queer men are even less acknowledged. Outside of World AIDS Day, National HIV testing day, major HIV research press releases, and an occasional expose about a HIV poz predator not disclosing status to women, Black gay men receive an incredibly small bandwidth of attention. This is not only a matter of volume or range, as even the content of the HIV related accounts often lack depth and originality. Instead the public is fed a recycled story pitch restating that HIV infection rates among Black gay men are extremely high, prevention efforts have failed, younger men did not witness the death and devastation marking the early years and are thus less motivated to use condoms, and testing and linkage to care must be increased. While most of these points are irrefutable, they are simplistic as they lack context and fail to address other related truths. Alarmist versions are sometimes spiked by what my friends dismiss as “poverty porn”, an exploitative association of the economically poor with perceived dysfunction, i.e., profiles of HIV-negative gay men lacking resources who welcome HIV diagnosis as a qualification for services received by their HIV-positive peers. Widely publicized books and films about AIDS usually relegate Black gay men’s roles to footnotes, subplots, and cutting rooms. What emerges is a definitive narrative depicting Black gay men, especially young men as irresponsible victims and/or vectors who should be addressed by escalated clinical responses—testing, PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis), and linkage to care to achieve greater community viral suppression. This trope, both seductive and reductive, justifies a narrow investment in individualized medical strategies to the exclusion of more comprehensive community oriented ones. We are less likely to prioritize substantive community engagement if we do not recognize that a community exists. It also acts in collusion with the racism, homophobia and misogyny driving the use of HIV criminalization as a defensible practice of public health and criminal justice. 7

We Are Here And We Were There Too by Craig Washington To achieve critical HIV prevention outcomes, we must invest beyond traditional HIV prevention inputs and support the broader redevelopment of Black gay men’s communities. More research can be directed outside of HIV-specific contexts such as black queer men’s mental health, gender and race identity formation, social network and family support systems. ASOs can prioritize collaborations with smaller community groups to yield more than testing numbers and expand leadership development and intergenerational connections. Coalitions among advocates, fundraising and marketing specialists can cultivate “consumers” to operate as active constituents. Such constituencies can augment the advocacy work needed for policy work and structural intervention.

We must also expand the range, deepen the scope of articles, editorials, blogs, films, books, plays and other cultural products that depict Black gay, bisexual and other queer men. Atlanta serves as the hub for the CDC, CNN, several Black, LGBT, and other progressive newspapers (Atlanta Voice, Georgia Voice, Creative Loafing), blogs and radio stations such as WRFG, as well as theaters such as The Alliance and the Theatrical Outlet that have presented Black LGBT productions. These venues can be proactively engaged in order to ensure that our activities and our stories are told with more frequency and accuracy. We can inform them about key successes of Evolution Project, AID Atlanta’s program for young Black gay men and transgender individuals, the Intimacy and Colour series for Black gay men, the groundbreaking advocacy mounted by the Atlanta Coalition for LGBT Youth (ACFLY), and the community rekindling sparked by the Counter Narrative Project. There are local Black gay media institutions that need black gay men’s support as contributors, volunteers, advertisers and audiences. Meak Productions’ “History of Black Gay America” celebrates historical and current Black LGBT community. Urban Socialites is an online magazine features events, fashion and social issues. Let us make more use of these valuable resources and secure their growth. There are precious oral histories left unrecorded that are still accessible but as we pass on so do they. We can work within and outside of Black gay men’s networks to capture and disseminate fairer depictions of who we are and document our history as we make it. Our lives and our accomplishments must not be confined to a health epidemic chronicle perpetuated by crisis alerts. When I founded the HIV prevention program known as Deeper Love at AID Atlanta in 1997, I knew then what I still hold as undisputable. To eradicate HIV or at least its damaging effects, we need to operate beyond the specific objectives of HIV prevention. I named the program for the very goal to which it aspired and the values that would inspire its movement. In 2015, we will convene all the coordinators who led Deeper Love to honor its wider significance as a space of learning and affirmation and as a training ground for several of our most respected community leaders. We will gather because as a lineage we appreciate Black LGBT communities as much more than sites for outreach and recruitment. We want to make sure we get the stories right. DRTakeover 2014 Return to Fantasy Island We had the opportunity to have a conversation with Ray from the DRTakeover team. DRTakeover is the organization that helped to rescue the 2013 Inferno DR event. That was the event were all of the attendees were notified, just about 24 hours before the scheduled start of the event, that it had being cancelled. Many guests arrived at the resort as the news of the cancellation was officially released. Since most of the guests had already paid for their accommodations thru Inferno DR’s designated travel coordinator, Worldwide Travel Partners, they arrived at the hotel to be informed that their rooms had not been secured. Upon finding out that the event was cancelled and that their room balances were unpaid, many guest made the decision to continue with their vacation, costing some guests more than $1000 extra. The DRTakeover team quickly coordinated with the resort to organize events for these guests that decided to continue their trip. When the team arrived back in the USA, they immediately began planning the festivities for their first official DRTakeover excursion, DRTakeover 2014. In my conversation with Ray, we discussed the planning and execution of DRTakeover 2014 and we also get the scoop on their upcoming 2015 event. Mocca Magazine: After r etur ning home fr om the impr omptu DR Takeover event of 2013, tell me about those early days of the 2014 event planning? Ray from DRTakeover: We star ted to have meetings about what would be needed to organize what is now DRTakeover. These meetings were driven by the momentum and the resilience from the community of people that were in attendance at the 2013 event, when the unfortunate circumstances of the cancellation and unpaid room payments occurred. Several of those people stated that we had to continue the DRTakeover event and that they would stand behind us and help in any way that they could to make sure that happens. So we decided to create a plan of action. 17

DRTakeover Return To Fantasy Island Mocca: What did that plan consist of? DRTakeover: Standar ds had to be set in place to financially pr otect the attendees. Our goal was to make sure that all of the logistics of DRTakeover were transparent. We also had to sculpt the experience to meet the needs of two audiences: those who had been part of the original impromptu event with all of the challenges that were overcome. We also had to find a way to be inviting to those who had not experienced the events of 2013, but more than likely, heard about the situation many were placed in.

Mocca: What did the gr oup come up with as a plan? DRTakeover: Many tasks wer e identified fr om those initial planning meetings. The first task was to find a way to structure the event so that all of the elements are paid for and also how do we place a spirit of integrity over the event so that people will be able to trust that they will receive the experience that they have paid for. It took work to build confidence in this brand after the last promoter let so many people down. It also took effort to make sure that any financial dealings were clear and transparent. We did these things, always thinking about the community that we were representing. This community kept us motivated and inspired to maintain the highest level of integrity. Mocca: How did the team maintain communication with the or iginal attendees? DRTakeover: We maintained an open line of communication through the Facebook group (DR Takeover) that was created while we were on location in the Dominican Republic. We kept that group open to give those members a direct line of communication with the planning team. It has continued and became a hub for information about the planning of the event. People placed messages of inspiration and encouragement on the page as well as commitments from people willing to help spread the word of the event in their local cities. www.moccamag.com

DR Takeover Return of Fantasy Island Mocca: What were some of the obstacles that needed to be overcome to launch this official event? DRTakeover: We had to realize that attendance would not reach the levels that the previous promoter’s event had reached. We recognized that there would be a number of people that would sit out the first event just to protect themselves. Many had put a lot of trust in the last promoter. When that trust was destroyed, it also placed a large stigma on other promoters. Only time and dedication can rebuild that trust. We understood that for many, it will be an uphill journey to regain that trust. But our commitment to giving our guests control of their experience will hopefully help to regain some of that trust.

We also understood that this experience will be seen by different people in different ways. It can be seen as a circuit party, as a beach weekend or as an international vacation. I do believe different people will see the weekend in different ways based on what that are personally looking for. We wanted to make sure that we had something for singles, couples, Men, Women, for the nonstop party person as well and the person looking for a relaxing vacation. While some will see the event one way, many others will look at the event through a different lens based on the experience they would like to have. Making sure that the programs are presented as something different people would want to take part in, was our strategy. Mocca: What was the reoccur r ing question that you received about the event? DRTakeover: People did have many questions for us but the one we heard most frequently was “How are we different from previous promoter for that event? Being able to concisely answer people when that question was raised was our consistent goal. We could accurately communicate just who we were and how we planned to prove that we were different. We did that without trying to sabotage or speak ill of anyone else’s product or project. We supported other people (as we will continue to do). Through supporting others, we were able to meet a number of other promoters and event planners, many of who supported us by allowing us to promote within their events as well as sponsoring VIP passes. It was been a testimony of a community dedicated to building an experience that everyone in the community can be proud of. We started as a grassroots project and have built ourselves into a movement that is progressing toward the 2015 event. 19

DR Takeover Return of Fantasy Island Mocca: How was your exper ience wor king with the r esor t? DRTakeover: The r esor t br ought a fr esh and positive per spective to the planning of the event. The resort’s group coordinator (Anna) is the same person that worked with the previous promoter. We did get to work with her creating events during our attempt to salvage the experience in 2013. There was one other person we anticipated that we would work with but he ended up leaving the resort. Anna, from the start to the finish, became a ‘girlfriend’. She cared about us and treated us as a premiere client. During our onsite visit, we were welcomed by the General Manager and all of the coordination team. They communicated to us the large number people that are excited about receiving our business and understand our value. Engaging with her on the events of that weekend was easier that some the events I’ve worked on here in the States, where an event coordinator may not know you or your audience. I just recently spoke with Anna about two additional features that will be added to the 2015 event. A couple that had met during the 2013 event, got engaged during our 2014 event and they plan on getting married during our 2015 event. We are overjoyed that they have given us the opportunity to plan their wedding and reception. Mocca: Wer e ther e any issues? DRTakeover: The only challenges I would say we had was the attention that we had to pay to the smaller details of the experience, so that people felt the love and planning that took place to insure their comfort during the entire experience. For our onsite logistics, we used the company Amstar. The level of engagement they presented was amazing. Our point person Amber, went so far beyond her appointed responsibilities that I personally sent a letter of praise to her location manager about her extraordinary level of commitment to the success of our excursions. She has been proactively working out details for the 2015 excursions. This being an international vacation, there could be a number of obstacles to the success of the events. But the dedication we have seen from the different entities we have worked with, have made this an event that I could possibly plan by email exclusively. That is a testament to the professionalism of each of the people and organizations we have chosen to work with. www.moccamag.com

DR Takeover 2014 Return of Fantasy Island Mocca: What was one the most sur pr ising things that you r an into or dealt with in the execution of DRTakeover 2014? DRTakeover: The one clear challenge we experienced was to make sure people who had not attended the 2013 event or those that were curious about our event, understood that we were different from the previous Dominican Republic event. To us, it was a prerequisite of the success of our event to make that distinction clear. As we hit the road to promote DRTakeover 2014, that was our #1 goal. We knew that this distinction would have to be made. We completely understood why the distinction had to be made and how many people were not privÊ to all of the things that took place to salvage that earlier event by the DR Takeover team. We also understood that it was our responsibility to provide them with that information so that they could make the distinction. That was our marketing, branding and promotions challenge that we knew from the beginning that we would have to meet. It was a team effort to stand behind this vision of providing our community with an event that they deserved. The team myself, Kirby, Martell, Ronald, Alicia, Kevin, our models, etc‌ we are driven to provide the first-class experience that each and every member of our community deserves. Attention to detail was one of the things we wanted our guests to see in each and every part of their experience for us. So when they stepped out of the airport terminal, they were greeted by people clearly identified and directing them to air conditioned motor coaches. Each guest was also offered a cold bottle of water from an ice chest (adorned with DRTakeover labels) to quench their thirst along the ride over to the resort. We meticulously laided out the check-in process at the resort to be swift and engaging. We understood that many people wanted to quickly get to their assigned rooms to prepare themselves for enjoying the offerings of the resort. These small things go a long way to making sure people understand how well orchestrated their arrival to the resort was planned to be.

DR Takeover 2014 Return of Fantasy Island Mocca: You added some special guest to the event this past year. Tell me about that experience?

DRTakeover: Adding different celebr ities to the programs gave people something extra to look forward to. Jensen Atwood, told us upon his ar r ival that he would love to be a part of the future events. He completely stepped outside of what he had contractually agreed to, and integrated himself into the community. He attended almost all of the events, he did not want to be cordoned off in a VIP section. He mingled with everyone and took pictures. He was completely engaging and that was received quite well. Quite a bit of footage has been released of Julian Serrano. He was a char m and a pleasur e to be ar ound. He has a ver y humble spirit. Julian was so engaging that people might have mistakenly assumed he was staff rather than a special guest. He was so eager to help in any way he could. And that also made him a joy to work with. Our female special guests were Uzi and Sparkle. They both ar e par t of our DC family and that tr anslated ver y well into the execution of the experience. Mocca: What would you say was your gr eatest event? DRTakeover: I would have to say our Fir st 100 VIP Par ty would be that event for a couple of reasons. First, it was a new event that didn’t just mirror events from previous promoter’s events. It was offered as a bonus to those attendees that purchased the first 100 event passes. Upon arrival these 100 attendees received and exclusive invitation disclosing the location of the party. Jenson Atwood and Julian Serrano were our invited celebrity guests. Only our team knew what that event would even look like. It was held in an exclusive part of the resort. That party created a level of momentum for future attendees to make sure that they are part of the first 100 again, so that they can attend that party. I do believe that our guests enjoyed the new and fresh aspects that were brought to each of our scheduled events. www.moccamag.com

DR Takeover Return to Fantasy Island Mocca: Originally the Fir st 100 event was scheduled to be an off-resort event. Why was the decision made to move it on-resort? DRTakeover: Originally the party was to take place on the rooftop of the J ewel Nightclub. Shortly after the official launch of the 2014 event, I received a call for the representatives of the Jewel, informing me that there had been some weather damage that had occurred to the rooftop structure. I flew down to inspect the damage to the rooftop. The club and our team determined that it was probably not in either of our best interests to host a water-based activity on the roof at that time. The manager felt that the necessary repair work would be completed before our arrival but we decided we needed to find an alternative location for the event, as a back-up plan. In speaking with the Melia Caribe Tropical Resort, they were then able to offer the exclusive onsite location as an alternative. After a walkthrough of that exclusive area, it was decided to officially move the event onsite rather than risk the necessary repairs not be completed in time. We actually still had two parties at the Jewel Nightclub but neither were water-based. We are considering the Jewel again as one of our off-resort locations but we also have to consider that guest have to purchase drinks at the Jewel versus staying onsite and the drinks are part of the all-inclusive package. We are considering other onsite options to limit this cost to our guest. Mocca: How was the experience of interacting with the locals at the off-site events? DRTakeover: The reactions can be divided into two groups: the heterosexual community and then the LGBT-supportive community. The latter group was great. We were contacted by a local radio station for our schedule information so that they could deliver it to the LGBT community. They were informed of the timing of our off-site events, so locals could come and interact with our guests. The only other way for them to meet our guest would have been if they were paying guests of the resort. The other group presented no outward issues with our group being there. It may have caught a few people by surprise to have such a large LGBT group there at the same time. Part of that surprise was expected, being that the Dominican Republic is a very Catholic-based religious community (and the changing views of LGBT individuals are very slowly changing there). Some of the heterosexual couples might have internally found issue with the situation, but I’m not aware of any outward expression of resentment.

DR Takeover Return to Fantasy Island Also the Jewel hosted our Bowties and Bikinis event. Being that the Jewel has multiple levels, we were given our own private levels in the club for our guests to thoroughly enjoy themselves without the need to be a part of everything else going on in the club. As you can imagine, that event required a level of exclusivity (based on the attendees’ mode of dress). And the Jewel provided that for us. Mocca: Tell me a little bit about DRTakeover ’s outreach project: DR Impact. DRTakeover: Outside of the parties and events, The DRTakeover team wanted to provide something to the community to show that we are invested in the success of that community. As part of the events for 2014, we requested that anyone interested in helping us to provide for a school in the Dominican Republic, We asked that they contact us and let us know how they can help. We received an overwhelming amount of supplies to help support this school. The students and teachers showed us so much love and gratitude for following thru on our promise to help them. Tears were shed by the children and teachers as well as by the group of people that helped to deliver the supplies. The children along with the help of the faculty staged a program to thank us for following thru on our promise to help them. For the 2015 event, we plan on continuing DR Impact. We are reaching out to corporate sponsors to have an even bigger impact in 2015. And hopefully not just a onetime gift presented in September, but an ongoing gift that they can receive throughout the year that will meet their continuing and ever-growing needs. Mocca: The launch of the official 2015 website is fast approaching tell me about that. DRTakeover: DRTakeover 2015 will take place August 27-September 1, 2015. The launch of the DRTakeover 2015 website took place on 11-11 at 11:00am. On the website, you will find information on the resort, the events taking place as well as find room accommodation prices. All information needed to make the decision as to whether DRTakeover 2015 is the right event for you has been made available. For 2015, we will also provide payment plans that will be handled by a highly vetted travel agency. The decision to offer a payment plan was based on the suggestions we received from some of the people interested in attending. We will still continue to offer the ‘a la carte’ option for those that prefer that mode of securing their plans. On the website, we also have pictures and videos from our previous DRTakeover events to give people a feeling of what the experience was like in the past and what they can expect in the future. www.moccamag.com

DR Takeover Return to Fantasy Island Mocca: Your team embar ked on a very large pr omotional tour for DRTakeover 2014. Are you planning to do the same thing again this year? DRTakeover: Absolutely. You can never rest. We have to continue to get the word out about DRTakeover 2015. We take the stance that not only is it our responsibility to promote DRTakeover far and wide, we also have a responsibility to support those that have supported us. Many promoters and event planners opened up their events to us, so that we could present our information to their attendees. We want to continue to support them by attending their events as well. One person in particular that I want to shout-out is Mario from Wassupnatl. He reached out to us very early in our planning and stated that he was willing to help us with whatever he could. I flew to Atlanta and spent a day with Mario being mentored on the different aspects of promoting an event. And I’m eternally grateful to him for doing that. At that time, we didn’t have a direct connection into the Atlanta social scene and he provided that for us. We have been extended the opportunity to promote at the upcoming Gentlemen’s Ball. So we will be in Atlanta, lending our support to Juan and Gee for their event. We had the opportunity to meet Waddie from The G-List Society during our time in Chicago for Chicago Black Pride. So many other promoters and event planners have invited us into their events and it is our responsibility to give back to them in any way we can. While most of our promotion has been focused on the East Coast, we are working to incorporate promoters and event planners from the West Coast. Also, when we do attend these special events, we come to support. So we don’t ask for free tickets or VIP areas. We are offering our support and appreciation for them being so kind and generous to allow us into theirs events. Terrance Morrison, Jason Culler and Bajon Braxton of Social Life Entertainment are showing themselves to be entrepreneurs in creating diverse experiences for our community in NYC and Philadelphia, and we want to help promote their events.

DR Takeover Return to Fantasy Island Mocca: Have you decided to host any spin-off events? DRTakeover: Our team has definitely discussed other events that we can see people enjoying and participating in, but all we have done at this time is discuss them. The caution that has been expressed is in either moving the event to a new location or creating a new event to add to the portfolio. There is a huge financial risk involved with doing either of those things. There are also market peculiarities that go along with doing this. Creating a new event involves securing a new date for the event. If we pick for example, Memorial Day weekend for a new event, it would conflict with Washington DC Pride. We have built great relationships with the promoters and event planners that host their biggest and largest events that holiday weekend. We are not interested in further dividing our audience. At least 3 of those organizers, Daryl Wilson Productions, Ignite DMV and Omega Entertainment have welcomed us into their events. We would not want to create an event that would draw people away from the experiences that they work so hard to produce. And even outside of DC, there is Sizzle Miami that same weekend. The financial risk is also very great. Everyone from the DRTakeover team works outside of this group to handle their personal financial obligations. What we strive for is that DRTakeover can handle its own bills. In order for that to occur, we have to make sure that a certain number of people take part in the event and that it is affordable for them to do so. There are many great places we can find to travel to, but if doing so is going to take away from the experience of one of our promotional partners or be at a financial disadvantage to possible attendees, that is not good business. And we have no interest in doing that. The last point of consideration is how our community will be treated during the event. No one wants to be taken advantage of or mistreated after paying a large amount of money for an experience. Finding the proper venue is critical to insuring that people will be respected and valued. So in moving the event to a new location, that is a major factor that has to be accounted for. Finding Me by Rafael Solece Have you ever woke up from a sleep that was so good that you could not remember where you were? Or have you ever had a dream that was so wonderful, you did not want it to end? That is exactly what it feels like when the sweet bliss of a new relationship starts to wear off. You don't even remember how it began. It was a whirl wind romance. You met the man/woman of your dreams. The both of you move from interested, to deeply in like, and suddenly you are madly in love. The world faded away and suddenly, there was nothing or no one else in the world but the two of you. Hell, nothing else mattered. You blew off your friends. You did not have time for your family anymore. You could barely pay attention at work or in school. You had only one thing on your mind; that was the life that the two of you were building together. You thought that you had found your happily ever after. Except there is one major problem: the story did not end when you found your one true love. In fact, the real story had just began. I have often wondered what happened after Snow White and Prince Charming got married? Of course, we know she became Prince Charming's Princess (not Queen) after all his father was still alive. I am also sure she moved into his palace. There is no doubt in my mind that she took on all of the responsibilities of being his wife and the princess of his kingdom; and she was probably a magnificent ruler. But then again, it was not as if it was her first time at the rodeo. If we go back to the beginning of the story. Before Snow White met Prince Charming. Before she inevitably became the maid for seven nasty coal minors. Before she ran away from home for fear of her life. Before her father married a jealous vindictive woman. Snow White was the Princess of her own kingdom. In fact, she was next in line to rule. So what happened to her kingdom? Why did she not become Queen after the untimely death/overthrow of her step mother? Why did Prince Charming not move into Snow's palace? Why did Charming not become her king? Why did Charming not take over all the responsibilities of being her husband and governing her kingdom? After all, she was actually already a Queen, while he himself was waiting for the thrown. I will tell you why; Snow got so lost in the fairytale, so lost in the happily ever after, so lost in the magic of true love that she forgot who she was. She forgot that she was an heir to a throne of her own. She forgot about the people, the kingdom, and the responsibilities that belonged to her. She forgot who she was; and that is exactly what happens to a lot of us when we suddenly fall in love. 37

Finding Me by Rafael Solece When we intertwine our lives with our one true love, we very often forget about who we were, who we were on the verge of becoming, and who we would have been. We start to reshape ourselves for the people we love. Especially, if they are already where we should or desire to be. We forget about our plans, our goals, and our responsibilities to ourselves. We go along happy that we have found someone who makes us happy. We are happy to slide into their world. We’re happy to nurture their kingdom. That is until one day, we realize that while we were building someone else’s kingdom, we let our own kingdom fall into ruin. Instead of merging two kingdoms, nurturing two lands, protecting two sets of ideals and dreams; one fell to the way side and the end result is a king/queen who has lost their identity. It is hard waking up from a good dream or trying to pull yourself out of bed after an awesome night’s sleep. You just want to lay there and bask in the awesomeness of such a sweet dream. Hardest of all is making it to your happily ever after only to realize that yes, we are in love however, love does not define who we are. Once you find love, real love, you end up having to find yourself all over again. Because a good romance, love affair, once upon a time will have you lost. I know I got lost for a minute and I am just now finding me again...

The Magic Idea That Will Save The Black Gay Web-Series

It's no secret that "Noah’s Arc" and "The DL Chronicles" are legends when it comes to Black, gay television shows. But how can we carry those successes from the 2005 and 2007 into the future? GLAAD's 2014 ‘Where We Are on TV Report’ says of the 129 gay and lesbian characters on the small screen nowhere near half of them are Black. And, the one transgender role on broadcast networks (Unique on "Glee") has been taken away. With moderate modification, there is no reason the Black gay content creators can't skip television networks, keep ourselves entertained, and keep the profits in our community. Popular web shows like "No Shade", "Freefall", "Drama Queenz", "Mamma'z Boi", "Steel River", and new fan favorite "Triangle" have done the best they can to please viewers. However, it's obvious that many production elements - plot, cinematography, casting, lighting, sound, etc.; could use some improvement. "The majority of these web series do a commendable job at defining their characters," says Wade Grant, blogger from G-List Society. "On the other hand, I would say simple technical issues such as lighting and sound would be areas of opportunity for directors and producers to improve. The most important nontechnical element I'd love to see the web series do is to give each main character their own stories for viewers to relate to and/or follow." Johnathan Gibbs, creator of "Edugaytion" podcast, makes a point to mention long pauses, awkward silences, and inconsistencies haunt his memories. But, most shows have a secret weapon. "Sex sells to the masses. That’s for sure," he says. "I can tell you that our ratings for episodes regarding discussions on HIV infection rates, social justice issues, and other serious topics pale in comparison to other podcasts and blogger/ vlogger media that has to do with sex, drama, reality shows, or Beyoncé."

The Magic Idea to Save Black Gay Web-Series Earl Fowlkes, President of Center for Black Equity, presented the Community Marketing & Insight’s African American LGBT Community SurveyŽ 2014 at the 7th Annual LGBT Marketing Conference over the summer and proved that Black, gay purchasing power is a great thing. Many of us love Starbucks and Target for their pro -LGBT practices whereas 78 percent of the community still resent Chick-fil-A. So, why have KickStarter and IndiGogo campaigns for Patrik-Ian Polk ("Punks"), Quincy Lenear and Deondray Gossett ("The DL Chronicles") failed while another man of a certain persuasion was able to raise $55,000 on the same website to make potato salad? There's no denying Black, gay web content is entertaining. "Drama Queenz" has over 1.9 million views and was recently featured in Madame Noire's "10 Smart Black Web Series That Will Make You Cancel Your Cable". "No Shade" pulled over 465,000 views with hopes of joining Hulu or Netflix and "Freefall" has 1.03 million views on YouTube with exclusive content for purchase on Vimeo.

Alonzo Faizon, plays the bad guy named Tony on "Freefall" confessed that because the show is good, he and fans both initially had a hard time separating the two worlds. "People would say very mean, nasty, cruel things about my character. I would feel shocked and a little angry that people would say [mean] things about me. Then I had to realize that it was not me they were addressing. It was the fictional character Tony that they disliked. And if I was able to get a rise out of people to that degree, and have them that angry with Tony, then as an actor I must have done a hell of a good job." The creator of "Freefall", Lamont Pierre has started the Mission Mainstream campaign and has raised $12,809 for the initiative over 17 months. Ocky Williams, writer at Cypher Avenue, has proposed the idea of creators joining forces and creating the Black Gay Entertainment Media Group. It's his vision of an on-demand network where the conglomerate will keep 15 percent of profits and distribute the rest for directors to pay cast and continue production. That beats the current amount they receive from YouTube, right?

The Magic Idea to Save Black Gay Web-Series

One successful transition from web series to television show is "Bros". With Anthony Hemingway (director of "Red Tails") and Lena Waithe (producer of "Dear White People") at the helm, writer Ben Cory Jones just inked a development deal with HBO. The comedy is loosely-based on his life as the character Kendall Grant who explores watching gay porn, finding dates on Tinder, and family values with his two straight brothers in Los Angeles. With the success of "Bros" some would question why Dr. George Smith has not been able to recreate this success with "Tha Life: Atlanta". Earlier this year Dr. Smith posted an open letter on YouTube asking for community support:

"Tha Life is my attempt to share a glimpse into the gay lifestyle here in Atlanta. Even if you don’t agree with my interpretation, it is important that we show the powers that be that we matter when it comes to programming. There are currently no shows on any network depicting stories of regular African American men living their truth. There is a movement going on in gay entertainment and we will not be at the table if we don't mobilize and support by showing we matter, care and support." Wade from G-List Society didn't take to kind to the Father Pope-esque monologue.

"With all due respect to Dr. Smith, I really like his vision with 'Tha Life', but I disagree wholeheartedly with him, pride coordinators, club promoters and event organizers who suggest lack of the Black LGBT community's financial and viewing support are the reason why their visions do not succeed. Their open letters are insulting, selfabsorbing and mistakenly self-aggrandizing by shifting the blame on everyone else but themselves." Why haven't any Black, gay content creators encouraged the Black Gay Entertainment Media Group idea? Or, at least given a love offering to the Mission Mainstream campaign? Johnathan knows how to move Black, gay web shows out of their rut. "One of the problems is there are so many people trying to do their own thing. Even here in New York City if all of the black gay creators and directors would come together and work on one project, I bet a great show that would inspire future giving would be produced." Beyond The Lights Beyond The Lights is a romantic drama film directed and written by Gina Prince-Bythewood. The film stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Nate Parker, Minnie Driver, Danny Glover and Machine Gun Kelly. The film originally premiered at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival on September 7,, 2014. The film made its mainstream theatrical release on November 14, 2014. Beyond The Lights is the story of Noni Jean (played by Gugu MbathaRaw, a hot new artist who has just one a Billboard Music Award before even releasing an album. Noni is set to become a music star, but the pressures of superstardom send her toward suicide. She is saved by a young police officer, Kaz Nicol (played by Nate Parker), who has his own aspirations of a career in politics. The two are immediately drawn to one another and begin a whirlwind romance, despite the protests of those around them including Noni’s Mom/Manager (played by Minnie Driver). With Kaz’s love and support, Noni is able to find her true voice. The film also stars Jordan Belfi, Hayley Marie Norman, Tom Wright, and Jessie Woodrow.

I’ve been with my man for about 8 months now. He is a great man and I really enjoy being with him. He happens to be the best lover I have ever had. He takes me places sexually that I never thought possible. My problem is that I think he is so much more sexually adventurous than me that don’t think I’m satisfying him. He has a much stronger sex drive than I do.He also can be way freakier than I have ever been. I have always been very mild when it comes to sex. He, on the other hand is extremely adventurous. While I do try to keep up with him, he always seems to show me that he can get even freakier. Most other aspects of our relationship are great but I know how important sex is and I feel that because I can’t seem to keep up with him sexually, he will end up leaving the relationship. He has never complained to me about this. I really do love this man and I do want to please him in every way that I can. But I know I can’t keep up with him. I will never be able to go to the place he can go. What do you think I should do. Dear Can’t Keep Up: I can understand your concern. You have found someone to share your time and energy with. You want to do everything you can sto show thst you are invested in this relationship. I think you might be make a big deal out of nothing. While having an active and fulfilling sexual relationship with your partner, you need to remember something. You’re man decided to enter into a relationship with you and your low flying freak flag. He is fully aware that he is more adventurous than you. My assumption is that he is cool with that. He might enjoy being the freakier one in your relationship. As you stated, the two of you have many other things in common and get along pretty well. Some people are better at maintaining the finances, some are better at cooking. You have a man that is better in the bed than you. Until he brings this up as an issue, its not an issue. My advice to you is to enjoy the relationship that you have with its many facets. If its not a problem for your man, then he is cool. Just make sure you stay as consistent as possible. Don’t try to be all wild and freaky if you can’t keep that up. Show him you can surprise him at times and he will appreciate the effort. Try your best not to leave him dissatisfied. That could lead him to look elsewhere for fulfillment. Show him that he made the right choice. Sometimes you’ll have to come out of your comfort zone but don’t take it too far if you can’t keep it up. Quit worrying and enjoy the relationship that you have. 111

Ask Aunt Pearl Dear Aunt Pearl: I’m really concerned for my friend. He met a guy this past summer. Shortly after they began dating, they decided to move in together. They started at pretty nice Now it seems like his man is becoming the boyfriend from hell. He has cheated on my friend a few times with random people. He is wasting his money and not taking care of the household. My friend has had to take over many of the bills. And recently the boyfriend informed my friend that since he is bisexual, he has started messing around with women. My friend comes to me over and over again complaining about the things that he is dealing with in his relationship. All of the advice that I have given him seems to go in one ear and out the other. I think things are on a downward spiral with them and he just seems to keep hanging on. What can I do to help my friend realize that he need to leave this loser and try to find someone that will respect him and treat him properly? Dear Concerned Friend: While I do understand that you are looking out for your friend, And that He has brought these issues to you r attention; He might only be venting his frustrations to you. Some people take a while to get to the point where they need to make changes. If this man is treating your friend so poorly and your friend is remaining in the relationship, It is because that is where he wants to be. Until he is ready to leave or make a change, there is nothing you or any of his other friends can do. Your job as his friend is to try and be there for him and help to support him. That doesn’t mean you have to enable him. It also doesn’t mean that you have to like or agree with his choices. But you need to remember that they are his choices to make. I f he make a bad one, he will have to deal with the consequences. You friend understands that he might be fighting a losing battle. But he has decide to be in this fight. You sound like a good friend. Try to remain that good friend because one of these days, a good friend is exactly what your friend will need.
