Winter is upon us, but instead of dreading the cold temperatures, relish in the opportunity to step up your hat game. With the help of the Lifestyle Staff, we provide you with four easy, stylish hat looks. Whether using a head band to hide hair you didn’t have time to wash or wearing a hat as a statement piece,

WE’VE GOT YOU COVERED.

HEADBAND Written and Styled by Eva Wieland

Throwing your hair up into a high ponytail or topknot is a go-to, especially when rolling out of bed for an early morning class. Unfortunately, when cold weather requires a hat, you don’t have that option without falling victim to the infamous cone head. A simple solution is wearing a knit headband. Headbands allow you to keep your ears warm without having to stuff your hair into a hat and risk terrible hat hair. A headband is a perfect accessory for almost any hairstyle, from down, to braided, to a pony. I recommend styling with a sky high, messy ponytail or bun and wearing the headband at the crest of your hairline, like Cameron is. This helps give your face some shape and adds a playful touch to the look. On days when your hair is in desperate need of a wash, headbands are a great way to hide just the right amount of dirty roots!

BEANIE FOR HER Written and Styled by Linh Nguyen

A beanie is a must-have item in everyone’s winter closet. It gives you a chic, stylish look while being extremely practical. Its versatility allows a beanie of any color to match with all types of outfits. It’s easy to achieve either an elegant or edgy look with the same beanie, depending on your sense of style. “They’re functional, they’re simple, they’re timeless – they’re a safety blanket for your head,” said Aaron Levine, Vice President of men’s design at Club Monaco. In this photo Kiki is rocking a green bomber jacket paired with skinny jeans, completing the look with a black knit beanie. Her beanie-wearing style is “the single cuff,” which entails rolling the bottom of the beanie once upwards, creating a cuff. A beanie is not intended for a fancy hairdo, but a completely natural one. Keep your hair down and let it hang loosely around your face.

BEANIE F O R HI M Styled and Written by Jessica Hamilton

In this photo, Joey effortlessly dons a red knit beanie that complements the stripe in his sweater. He wears the beanie pulled snuggly around his ears, perfect for keeping warm. If your hair is longer, pull some of it out of the beanie around your face. Joey demonstrates how the beanie can add to a dressier outfit, like khakis and a wool sweater. You can also dress casually for class, in sweats and a white V-neck, and throw the beanie on for a trendier look. For an effortless Friday night look, Joey could swap his khakis for dark denim and his sweater for a white V-neck with a plaid shirt. To prevent beanies from matting your hair and to prevent hat hair in general, Seventeen suggests three simple tips. First, if you are planning to throw on a hat after washing your hair, make sure your hair is completely dry. If you put a hat on your wet hair it will unavoidably dry matted against your head. Second, you can use volumizing products before you dry your hair to counter the flattening effects of the hat. Third, wear your hair loosely, such as with the beanie. When you remove the hat, your hair won’t be constricted against your head.

FEDORA Styled and Written by Jessica Hamilton

A fedora is an alternative to the more commonly worn headband or beanie. This version brings a Western feel to the Midwest. To ensure that your outfit doesn’t look too cowgirl, the hat can easily be paired with a Pea Coat and a loop scarf. The hat can be worn with sleek, straight hair or a messy side braid, like Rachel’s. This fedora is a statement piece itself, so it saves you from having to wear a chunky necklace. On the weekends, a wide-brimmed hat is the perfect accessory to Saturday brunch with your friends or for running errands on Sunday. For an edgier look at brunch, add a bright red lip and black, winged eyeliner, and throw on a black leather jacket. If you are wearing the hat out and about for errands, you can go makeup free, throw on a white tee, leggings and some low-heeled boots.
