House of Anteros
AN INTERVIEW WITH MATTHEW WEINBERGER House of Anteros is a clothing brand and fashion house created by Matthew Weinberger, a freshman at the University of WisconsinMadison. According to Matthew, the House of Anteros “look” can be described as “dark, dreamy and decadent, with classical iconography in a contemporary context.” It’s not just a clothing brand, though, which is exactly what makes it unique: MODA MAGAZINE: What is House of Anteros? WEINBERGER: I started House of Anteros as something bigger than a fashion house, but rather, an engine for creativity and community. I know what it is like to be an artist who wants to show his work to a wider audience but not know how, or where to go. I made HOA to be a resource for artists like myself, who are committed to their craft and looking for a way to get their work out there. That’s why we have an online publication. We are not just a fashion house; we are the press. We publish articles about local artists and if any artist is interested in having their work featured, they can message us on Instagram, or on our website, and we will make it happen. We are also working on creating an artist’s collective for local creatives. Our clothing represents our brand, our brand represents what we do, and what we do is give a platform for creatives to share their vision. What or who is Anteros? Anteros is the Greek God of Requited Love. As one of the Erotes, Anteros is one of the lesser-known siblings of Eros, who is also known as Cupid by the Romans. Do you have a favorite fashion house or one you’d like to emulate? Gucci is doing some great things. I really liked their recent Fall-Winter 2018/2019 Fashion Show.
What got you interested in fashion and clothing? The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I remember being young and seeing the exhibition, Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty. That definitely sparked my interest. You’re a photographer. How does this play into your fashion entrepreneurship? I do the vast majority of the shoots for House of Anteros. My hands-on approach to creating visual content for the brand allows for greater creative control on my part. Being a photographer helps me shape the image of the brand. I am a photographer, and an artist, and this brand is for other artists like myself. Who’s your biggest inspiration? Your biggest muse? Praxiteles. Over 2000 years later, his legacy as an artist lives on. Finally, you’re a freshman at UW-Madison. How do you find time to do all of this? If you love something, you will find the time to do it.
