Rising to the Top of a Broken Industry BY FRANCESCA ACCIARDO, FASHION WRITER

DAMSEL IN DIOR

We all know the feeling of scrolling through our favorite blogs, reading magazine articles, looking at street style from Fashion Week and thinking to ourselves: there’s no way Gucci jackets and Chanel bags are working their way into this college budget. In a world of influencers and Instagram, it appears unrealistic that people can really afford all Chaneleverything and endless wardrobes, and truthfully, it is. Jacey shares an outfit from Paris Fashion Week and exclaims, “I cannot thank the amazing team at Net-a-Porter enough for allowing me to dip into their inventory and borrow fantastic pieces from their store.”1 This is just one example of the many bloggers and influencers who share content that was composed with a little help from 1 Duprie, Jacey. “My Fashion Month Savior.” Damsel In Dior, 10 Oct. 2017.

Countless blog posts are “in partnership with,” products are “care of xyz” and instagrams are subtly captioned with “#ad.” Take note next time you scroll through Instagram; there is a new feature specifically for paid partnerships: the “paid partnership with xyz” copy appears just below a user’s handle. Influencers with wellrecognized names in the industry are overwhelmed with goodies arriving at their door to share with their following and flights to exotic countries for brand campaigns.

More To It Than The Likes Share Tactics: Instagram’s Facade BY AMANDA GLASS, LIFESTYLE STAFF WRITER ILLUSTRATIONS BY CHANNING SMITH Instagram has taken society by storm over the past decade as the platform began to conquer…well… everything. “Instagrammers” exist on a wide spectrum, ranging from those who have not posted since 2012 to those who do not know how to stop. Within these varying degrees of usage can come the Instagram addiction, causing millennials to use their Instagram profiles as displays of themselves in a different (or completely untrue) light. As the app gains popularity, it is important to ask ourselves: are our profiles representative of our true selves, or are they simply a facade?

trast adjustments in SnapSeed, finding the perfect effect in VSCO or piecing together various selfies in PicCollage, the process is anything but quick and easy. What happens, though, when this concept of “editing” is taken to an extreme? When instead of editing our photos, we end up editing ourselves?

Increasingly intense Instagram usage has led to a trend of posting photos that look very different from perceptions of our real selves. When building an Instagram profile, it is important to remember that photos are worth a thousand words. Each post is representative of some aspect of either your character, personality or style, and as you continue to be an engaged Instagrammer, these individual pieces create your persona. Do not let today’s social media trends influence the way in which you use the platforms, Instagram in particular. Turn Your Breakdowns into Breakthroughs WRITTEN AND PHOTOGRAPHED BY SAM GEORGSON, CONTRIBUTING WRITER It is that time of the semester again. School work is building up, you have one exam after the next and projects and papers galore occupy your days. You are probably already operating on little-to-no sleep, and yet you still try to enjoy the weekends. You might be struggling to balance your social life with school and family time, often sacrificing a good night’s sleep to finish a paper or see a friend. All at once, the stress catches up to you and hits you like a wall. Sometimes life’s tasks build up. Without realizing it, you start to approach your tipping point, and suddenly, you explode. come. Your first instinct will be to jot down all of the major due dates and stressors, but the little things that build up and get brushed under the rug are sometimes more dangerous. Leave yourself some room to mark those as well. Once you have put everything down on paper — tasks big and small — you should sit with your list. Now is the time to assess and prioritize your time and life as a whole. Think about all of the things that are important to you and the tasks that need your immediate attention. Make sure your priorities and goals align with your core values. Whether it is good grades, spending time with friends and family or saving money, you want to prioritize your life and time in ways that will satisfy these values. The end goal is to avoid another stress-inducing situation and to boost your confidence levels.

After prioritizing your list, you should start breaking down your goals into realistic, doable tasks. You must make sure all of your goals are actually attainable. This kind of mental mapping will greatly reduce stress levels. Besides, the whole point of this exercise is to actually begin checking things off of the list.

you probably should, it is hard not to spread yourself thin. Life is a delicate balance, and sometimes, caring for our own mental health gets lost in the mix. We have all been there. We all know that sometimes, life can suddenly become so overwhelming that we need a moment to recollect ourselves.

Once you have all of your goals in mind and a realistic strategy for accomplishing them, you can get to work. Pick a few goals to focus on each day. You should be realistic in deciding how much you are going to accomplish in a day, week or even a month. Small tasks matter, and it will feel just as good to knock the little things off of your list to make more room for your major goals.

So, the next time you feel a freakout brewing, take advantage of your stressful situation and motivate yourself to reorganize and rethink what matters to you most. If you are successful, you will keep the next one at bay. David Allen puts it best when he says “Your mind is for having ideas, not holding them.”1 By following these healthy steps for managing a meltdown, you too can turn your breakdowns into breakthroughs.

In this first stage, partners may spend lots of time together. One might buy the other unexpected gifts, and the relationship might become “official” quickly. Warning signs that we tend to think of often arise later in the relationship. Some examples of this may include someone isolating their partner from family and friends, using threats and intimidation to get what they want or making all of the decisions in the relationship. The abusive partner might use emotional put-downs, manipulation and/or physical/ sexual violence to harm their partner. Typically there is a period of calm in between incidents that gets shorter and shorter with time. At first, it may be months, then dwindle to weeks, then days. The violence also tends to escalate over time, making the situation increasingly dangerous. S: What resources are available to me at UW if I think I may be in an unhealthy relationship? Navigating Broken Dreams WRITTEN AND PHOTOGRAPHED BY MOLLY RAPOZO, CONTRIBUTING WRITER

We all have visions of who we would like to be in the future. When confronted with the “What do you want to be when you grow up?” question, every child shoots for the stars. From rock stars to professional athletes and doctors, these aspirations are usually somewhat farfetched professions. We plan the house we will live in, where we will move and who we will marry. As we grow up, we learn what we do and do not like, and we adapt our dreams to fit our reality.

“As we grow up, we learn what we do and do not like, and we adapt our dreams to fit our reality.”

We make and break dreams constantly, so why do we take it so hard when a dream we thought of in the past does not pan out like we wanted? That sweet spot of late teens and twenties is the perfect time to accept the broken ideas we had for ourselves and explore what else the world has to offer.

#MeToo: Breaks the Silence What the Hashtag Means for the Future of Online Activism WRITTEN AND ILLUSTRATED BY CHANNING SMITH, CONTRIBUTING WRITER It was too easy, too simple. Two short words could not summarize years of institutional sexism and inequality — that’s like dipping your toe in the Atlantic and claiming you swam the ocean. #MeToo is an online activist movement sparked by a tweet from Alyssa Milano. Milano called for women to come forward as allegations against Harvey Weinstein started surfacing to stress the widespread nature of sexual harassment and assault. The phrase “Me Too” itself is neither shiny nor new, though, as feminist and activist Tarana Burke had coined the term 10 years earlier.

The man who called “Dibs!” as I walked down State Street, or the guy who told me I was “too pretty not to smile?” I didn’t count any of them. It’s difficult to narrow down what the “#MeToo” movement covers, because the definition of assault varies widely — everything from extreme sexual abuse to catcalling are being blanketed into the same category. I was reluctant to tap out those six brief letters onto my keyboard, because I was sure these incidents didn’t count. They weren’t important enough, I reasoned.

behavior and rape culture to grow and thrive like deadly bacteria, but rape isn’t a culture — it is a crime. Even after my dramatic epiphany, I was still skeptical. The fact that I could “like” and “comment” on someone’s assault was particularly off putting to me — deeply personal experiences suddenly became as anonymous as a username behind a keyboard. However, this is simply the new world we live in: we live online. Our views, experiences and communities are translated to the public via a medium of less than 140 characters. Social media trends ebb and flow, but the #MeToo movement is much more than a hashtag — it’s the beginning of a larger push for awareness.

At first, I had my reservations. The Art of Love and War BY MATT WEINBERGER, CONTRIBUTING WRITER Creativity is a process; one of experimentation, undoing expectations and leaving room for mistakes. It is rare that a fully developed idea will translate into a final product. I started the process which eventually became “The Art of Love and War” with no set end-goal. I created a backdrop using printer paper and gathered a variety of objects around my room. Things like dice, golf tees, coins, playing cards, rocks, a lock, toy soldiers and chalk ended up in a pile beside the backdrop. I turned off the lights and closed the blinds to darken the room. My iPhone flashlight lit the stage. Drawing on Paul Cezanne’s still life paintings of apples and flowers as inspiration, I photographed household objects in the style of still life. Feeling like a mundane exercise, I was not content. After practicing how to control light and playing with shadows, I retired for the night, having created nothing particularly significant. After I got home from school the next day, what had been an exercise turned into a route to discovery when I happened to pick up two toy soldiers. I noticed that the shadow on the wall looked like the soldiers were interacting in some sort of amorous way. With a few minor adjustments I managed to make them look like they were embracing, on the verge of a kiss. I took a few photos but was still not content. The photos felt bland, until I introduced the ace of hearts from the deck of cards. Leaning against the backdrop, the shadows of the toy soldiers were cast onto the card below the central heart. The single image birthed inspiration for a full series. Now, two years since I shot the first photo of the soldiers, I still go back to work on the series, adding new images and replacing old ones. Through experimentation without direction, I developed a process that I was both content with and happy to continue evolving — “The Art of Love and War.”

The Modern Caste: An Exploration of Works by Claudio Dicochea BY MADELINE RASMUSSEN, CONTRIBUTING WRITER “light-skinned” and “dark-skinned” families. Because eighteenth century colonial Mexico prioritized racial purity, the light-skinned families could be found at the top of the hierarchy, peering down onto their darker skinned counterparts. Claudio Dicochea is a Coloradobased artist whose works dissect and disfigure the narrative of these historical casta paintings. Putting a contemporary spin on centuries-old paintings, Dicochea successfully confronts identity in the modern age by trading in classical representations for pop culture icons and contemporary iconography. Through appropriation and reworking of pop culture, Dicochea depicts the awkward disconnect between true identity and representation in modern society.

The castes in this context entail an intricate hierarchy, which dictates all social and religious aspects of life.1 In the western world, it is easy to feel removed from such a system. The 1 T.N. This brings the viewer to an interesting line of inquiry. How is identity stratified in modern society? How does the legacy of colonialism and anti-blackness affect how identity is portrayed? Ironically, Claudio Dicochea offers answers to these questions, while making humorous allusions to the 1979 thriller “Alien.” Dicochea places his figures in typical casta compositions, but replaces the portrayed victims with icons such as Princess Diana and Don Pedro.
