Class of ‘22
A Mini of Moda Magazine’s Senior Class
Each year Moda brings in a new boat of fresh, creative faces, while simultaneously sending off another. For many years, I have greatly admired the accomplishments of those on their departures. This year, I sadly had to get on the boat, but I couldn’t be prouder of those I am sitting by and how they have built Moda over their time in the publication.
Take Jessica Katz, Online Editor, who spent the last year revamping Moda’s approach to our online blog. Prior to this, section editors took care of their section’s blog posts, but as more writ ers joined, Moda needed a stronger, more sustainable option to support budding ideas and continue influenc ing the UW community. Emily Fleming, PR & Outreach Director, addressed another Moda growth point, seeing through an additional new role and be coming an essential player in Moda’s social extension and community reach.
Hannah Bruder, Rose Quinlan and Seth DeGier were creative muses behind Moda’s visuals—Hannah directed cre ative shoots, Rose created graphics and Seth captured breathtaking shots. Molly Jacobs and Annika Ide, Art Di rector, Moda’s current longest stand ing members, can also be accredited for their great visual contributions. In fact, Molly and Annika are the leading ladies responsible for our 2022 spring print Virtue and Vice cover photos.
Arella Warren, Deputy Editor, gra ciously took on this challenging past year with me—being a guiding light
to Moda’s newfound independence and spectacular content. Arella, both determined and kind, symbolizes the best of Moda.
As I write these words, our Moda ship has sailed, making many stops on the way. Some of us are heading to Flori da, others to Chicago, one to Atlanta, some to California and a few will be continuing to bless Madison, WI with their wit and spirit.
Despite the bittersweet nature of goodbyes, there is an overriding ex citement that comes with the Moda circle of life. If there is one thing I know about Moda, it is that it serves as a symbol of creativity and growth for its members—when I speak to Moda alumni, they share how Moda started it all. The horizons of this group’s success are budding, bright and binge-worthy, and I can’t wait to see them unfold. The same goes for the remaining Moda team.
In our lives, Moda isn’t forever (final ly, we can start getting paid)—but the people we have met, the content we have created and the things we have learned will remain an integral part of who we are. I hope the biggest thing any of us take away from Moda is the importance of collaboration. We are nothing without the people who work with us, with humility, to find ful fillment, innovation and happiness. I found that here. ■

Favorite Moda Memory: My favorite Moda memory was our spring 2022 launch party. It was so fun to get dressed up and have an in person celebration after so much time social distancing. Seeing everyone come together and celebrate their work was super rewarding!
Advice for your younger Moda self: Be wonderfully sur prised.
What Moda/college has taught you: I learned a lot about my self worth during my time in Moda and in college. We’re seldom perfect but we are capable of growing, evolving and learning. I have learned to find a balance between self re flection and self love. You deserve great things and those things seek you as you seek them.
Dream job/life goal: I am excited to work in brand strate gy in the advertising industry post graduation. I love strat egy work because it is influenced by human behaviors and trends. It speaks to the evolution of culture and society and creates a two way communication between people and cre ative messaging. To me it is our opportunity to redefine how we approach advertising and consumerism. I also want to be a mom, be in love, have a garden, paint often, eat more often and see new things as much as I can!
Post-grad hopes and dreams: To be happy & surprised! Some of the most wonderful things that have happened I never expected—how lucky would I be to see that continue.
Senior yearbook quote: “It is distinctly possible to stay too long at the fair.”

Advice for your younger Moda self: Don’t be afraid to share your ideas just because you ar en’t sure if they are good enough.
What Moda/college has taught you: That col laboration doesn’t need to be intimidating if you surround yourself with the right people.
Dream job/life goal: To have a degree in both the art field and science field and from there not quite sure yet, but hopefully a job involving both. Post-grad hopes and dreams: To explore the world outside of the Midwest more and get out side of my comfort zone .
Senior yearbook quote: Photography has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.

Favorite Moda Memory: Quite possibly Virtue/Vice launch!
Advice for your younger Moda self: Make as many connec tions as you can & don’t be afraid to pitch your ideas! What Moda/college has taught you: Moda has helped me feel comfortable in expressing my genuine self through writing, speaking and dressing, teaching me that people are less intimidating than they may seem. Most of us share the same insecurities, fears, hopes and interests deep down. At the end of the day, we’re all just humans trying to figure it out ... so approach each moment as if you know what you’re doing, and your true self and passions will guide you through it.
Dream job/life goal: To make a difference through creative work & ethical communication practices.
Post-grad hopes and dreams: When I picture my future life and aspirations, I envision myself going into Art Direction, self-publishing visual novels, continuing to make art and music, launching my own brand, adopting rescued animals, mentoring youth, volunteering for human rights causes, and leading a sustainable lifestyle on our Mother Earth.

Favorite Moda Memory: I adored the 2022 Spring Launch Party at Lucille. It was such an amazing way to celebrate and close out four, wonderful years with Moda!
Advice for your younger Moda self: Make the most of your time with Moda and at UW because it goes by way too fast! I think I blinked in my dorm room and ended up in graduation robes.
What Moda/college has taught you: Moda taught me what I want to pursue post-college and how to make those dreams a reality. The amazing network of people within it have been incredible role models.
Dream job/life goal: I would love to pursue graphic design and art direction at an agency.

Favorite Moda Memory: At our last print launch party, I will never forget the feeling of seeing my photo as the cover of the magazine printed on a giant poster – I was shaking and couldn’t stop smiling. Making print cover was my big gest goal since freshman year, and I couldn’t be prouder of myself for rounding out my senior year having achieved that and being able to hold that magazine in my hands.
Advice for your younger Moda self: I would tell my freshman year Moda self to not take this organization for granted. The opportunities I had to shoot, the creativity and detail that goes into every single article and photoshoot, the skills I got to work on, it’s actually crazy that I got all of this experience from a fully student-run magazine. Moda is a hidden gem for creativity at UW and it is unlike anything else I will ever experience again.
What Moda/college has taught you: Moda taught me to believe in my creativ ity. Having an opportunity to use my imagination and own creative direction at these extravagant and beautiful photoshoots monthly for four years was the outlet I didn’t know I depended on so much throughout college. I would come back to my roommates after every shoot gushing about how reinspired and rejuvenated I felt, and that is really special. Reflecting on my work and how it’s grown since freshman year, Moda showed me that the passion put into my work produces gratifying outcomes, and I’m so proud of the portfolio I’ve built here. Dream job/life goal: To be honest, I’ve never had a dream job, I guess I don’t want to tie myself down to just one “calling.” All I know is that it has to be some thing creative and that I’ll be happiest with a camera in my hands. If it fits that criteria, I know I’ll be okay. As cheesy as it sounds, I think I’ll end up right where I’m supposed to, and I’m excited to see where that is.
Senior yearbook quote: Left handed, training to be right.

Favorite Moda Memory: Being backstage during the UW Fashion Week finale show. It was amazing to see all of our hard work come together, and it especially hit me when Gigi and I both started to tear up at the same time during one of the walks! It was also incredibly special to be surrounded by friends, family and Moda staff afterwards. It was a moment full of so much love and pride that I will never forget. Advice for your younger Moda self: Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there even if it is scary. Showing initiative in Moda is always rewarded, and the best thing to do is just soak it all in and learn as you go. It is worth all of the hard work and is a truly priceless experience that not only brings you closer to your goals in your career, but also teaches valu able life lessons about friendships, work relationships, bal ance and passions!
What Moda/college has taught you: Through Moda, I’ve learned the importance of being kind, open-minded, hard-working and so much more. I’ve learned how much I love to work in collaborative environments, and how grateful I am to have been surrounded by such a smart, creative and engaging group of people (all while making super cool stuff happen!) My experience also taught me that it feels so good to see your work come to life, whether it be on the pages of the magazine, through an event or even through the behind the scenes organizing that makes the more fun stuff a reali ty. I wouldn’t trade my time in Moda for the world.
Dream job/life goal: Running fashion shows for a high fash ion brand and starting my own business one day. Post-grad hopes and dreams: I hope to enjoy every sin gle day in my new job, as well as get my MBA (potentially abroad!) within the next few years.

Favorite Moda Memory: During our first meeting of the 2021-2022 school year, I remember seeing hundreds of people—the room was so full that there weren’t enough seats to fit everyone. Seeing all the excitement and eagerness filled my heart with so much joy.
Advice for your younger Moda self: You will do great things and truly leave an impact if you put yourself out there, stay passionate and determined, and step outside your comfort zone just a little.
What Moda/college has taught you: In the craziness of graduating in three years, the biggest lesson I’ve learned is the value of relationships—the ones I’ve gained and even the ones I’ve lost. Every connection in life holds meaning. Dream job/life goal: Being a support system and a positive light in the lives of many.
Post-grad hopes and dreams: Meet new people and build new relationships, travel to Paris, write a book, start a blog, stay creative, grow as an advocate, and soak in everything that makes me happy.
