DIRECTORS NOTE

i

am delighted to present our fourth edition of Mode magazine - Mode meaning the French word for ‘Style’. As each edition goes to print, I am immensely proud. I cannot rave enough about, Rhianna (Creative Directer at Sisters & Co), who creates the magazine from start to finish, and the rest of my team in the head office who work tirelessly to support her, in particular Fi and Nancy! At Sisters & Co, we are incredibly lucky to offer our amazing customers some of the world’s most incredible brands. In this edition you get to meet some of these designers and hear what makes them tick. When it comes to fashion, Winter is my favourite season as I love layering knits, wearing coats and like most women, I have an addiction to boots! So, snuggle down with a copy of Mode and enjoy all our winter styling and favourites pieces right at your finger tips. This season I am crushing on Anine Bing’s Beige Bianca Boot and also the Rag & Bone Harrow Boot in suede. There is currently such a trend for suede and these two brands have in my opinion absolutely nailed it! I am also obsessed with the Military Jacket and this season we have such a great selection. Brand new to Sisters & Co is the label Remain and we are loving their trench, street style

rodelle payne jacket. Anine Bing offers a shorter, button boyfriend style that is a wardrobe must and coming soon are army jackets by luxury brand Yves Salamon. This brand was instrumental in starting the military style revolution and the army or charcoal jacket teamed back with detachable fur trim is something I am lusting after for my wardrobe this winter. I am a total denim addict and this season we have an amazing selection of jeans from new brand, Citizens of Humanity, right through to Rag & Bone, Anine Bing and One Teaspoon. From the classic boyfriend style, flares and skinny the choices are endless but one of my absolute favourites are the cropped straight leg from Rag & Bone and Anine Bing I will be rocking these with my ankle boots and sneakers all season. For my weekend casual look, I can’t get out of my Ragdoll t-shirts and Philippe Model sneakers. The comfort and style are worth every cent. In the handbag department, I am Deadly Ponies number one fan but I am also looking forward to the edition of a handbag collection from Parisian superstar designer, Vanessa Bruno. This collection will be exclusive to Sisters & Co! There is so much to be excited about - as sad as it is to say goodbye to summer I am definitely a seasonal girl! MODE | AW17

Remain | Scene Parka Khaki $249.00

This season, there is one trend that you need to have in your wardrobe: the military jacket. Influencing fashion for decades, the military jacket embraces structure with epaulettes and bold button detail. Casual enough to wear at the weekend and cool enough to wear out at night. We are looking forward to the arrival of Yves Salomon’s Army Jacket, a piece that is key to the military jacket trend. First introduced in 2010, Salomon’s first Parker jacket is inspired by vintage military uniform and now comes in an array of different colours and styles. A global phenomenon that continues to grow each season.

Remain is new label recently arrived at Sisters & Co, brought to us by local designer Penny Styles. Her favourite piece in the collection is the army styled jacket with a trench twist. This jacket is her go to piece for winter and has quickly become our wardrobe staple. Rag & Bone have made a heavier, oversized version of the military jacket for those really wanting to make a statement. Look to everyone’s favourite designer, Anine Bing, for a wearable army green military style jacket featureing pocket detail and epaulettes. To achieve this look remember less is more, don’t go overboard with accessories or prints, and keep your hair and make-up natural. Opt for clothing that isn’t too form fitting and shoes that are either flat or heeled only an inch or so. Stick to hushed tones and a more neutral colour palette. winter capsule

wardrobe Your guide to a compact wardrobe made up of versatile, investment pieces, you simply love to wear.

2.

There are many variations on the Capsule Wardrobe concept, a term coined by Susie Faux, the owner of a London boutique called ‘Wardrobe’ in the 1970s. So what is a capsule wardrobe then? Simply put a capsule wardrobe is a small collection of essential pieces that could be considered timeless in the fast changing world of fashion.

3.

4.

One quite effective way to build a capsule wardrobe is to approach it based on the seasons. The key to planning a seasonal capsule wardrobe is to pick versatile pieces that you simply love to wear. We all have those items in our closet, maybe that one dress that fits us like no other or that go to pair of skinny jeans that we’d wear everyday if we could. When you stop and think about it, many of us only wear a fraction of the clothes we own on a regular basis. The capsule wardrobe allows us to spend less time and energy on deciding what to wear in the morning, leaving more time and energy for what really matters. Being conscious of spending money on quality items that last will not only benefit your wallet in the long run but also have a positive effect on the environment. We challenge you to create a winter capsule wardrobe; it might just change the way you shop. Sisters Capsule Wardrobe Collection coming soon. WWW.SISTERSANDCO.CO.NZ | INSTA: SISTERSSNAPS

PEOPLE OF FASHION

Saralyn Feinberg

RAG & BONE N EW YORK

Tell us about your role at Rag & Bone? What is it like working for such a world-renowned fashion label? I am the Sales Manager for International Wholesale and Franchise for APAC region at Rag & Bone. My job entails overseeing our businesses in mens and women’s collections, denim, handbags, accessories, and footwear for our retail and wholesale businesses in Asia. Working for a brand like Rag & Bone is so rewarding because I’ve been able to see and impact so many parts of the business. From design, to merchandising – there are so many ways in which I’m able to see all of our teams efforts come to fruition. Rag & Bone has also been incredibly supportive of me in my career and it’s a pleasure to work for a company that believes in you and gives you that solid foundation for growth. I started with the company about 3.5 years ago on our US wholesale team and as my interests evolved, the company has awarded me to be able to pave my own career path. What led you here? Have you always had an interest in fashion? I have to say I always had my heart in fashion from an early age. I started working in retail during breaks at university and continued my studies in businesses and apparel merchandising, giving me the great foundation to build my career. What does an average day at work look like for you, and what’s the atmosphere at the Rag & Bone HQ? There really isn’t a typical day at Rag & Bone, you can expect anything from an overseas video conference call recapping the business week to reviewing the future seasons board inspirations with the design teams. The atmosphere is very much collaborative; we work in small squads based on our departments. We are constantly interacting with all business channels in the company: production, merchandising, design, pr, and marketing to achieve our goals. We also love to have fun! There’s always music playing and interesting new learnings; we know how to get down to business and have a fun time doing it! Can you describe to us your office space? Whats on the desk at the moment? Our head office is based in the Meatpacking neighbourhood of NYC, right below 14th Street and West Side Highway. Our views are really incredible highlighting both nature and modern architecture, as we are akin to the Hudson River and the new Whitney museum. There are also quite a few prominent fashion companies based right next door and lots of cool bars and restaurants. On my desk at the moment is a mini palm plant and a few crystals, keeping the energy always positive and bright!

Whats it like living and working in New York city? Did you grow up there? It’s a whirlwind to live and work in NYC, it’s so busy and there is constantly something to do whether it’s the latest and greatest workout class, restaurant or bar opening or museum exhibition. Honestly, never a dull moment and you have a world of cultures at your doorstep. I feel so fortunate and grateful to live here! I grew up just outside another great city in the US, Chicago! It’s similar to NYC, just a bit smaller in scale. Really cool architecture and it’s beautiful, as it has river outlets that run through the city stemming from Lake Michigan. I always suggest visiting Chicago in the Spring or Fall – winters there are soo cold and summer is super hot! Where abouts do you live in New York and whats the commute to work like? I live on the cusp of Little Italy and Chinatown; it’s a really charming place to live. All the restaurant maitre’ds stand on the streets, greeting potential customers and tourists trying to get them to eat at their “The atmosphere at the Rag & Bone restaurant. I think of them all as my friendly doormen! Commute to work is super easy, on a nice day I can walk head office is very collaborative; we are and during cold weather I take a taxi.

constantly interacting with all business productions to marketing”.

Can you share with us some of your favourite spots channels from around the city? Cafes, restaurants, boutiques? Baz Bagel and Restaurant for best breakfast and lunch. Authentic NYC bagels with a fun decor and delicious family recipes. Rubirosa for pizza and pasta. Cozy and warm restaurant with best pizza in the city! Uncle Boons for best Thai, really authentic and incredible flavors and fun cocktails. I love vintage shopping so my go-to’s are Stella Dallas and Ritual Vintage. Come Friday, what does an average weekend in NYC look like for you? Love a weekend in Manhattan; I would meet up with friends for dinner and drinks. Saturday and Sunday I would start the day with my favorite soul cycle spin class then maybe explore a new neighbourhood or area of the city. I also take advantage of all the best beauty and spas the city has to offer, Marie nails for my manicure and maybe a spa treatment or message as a special treat! Best piece of styling advice received? My mother has always encouraged me to wear whatever I was comfortable in but to always look my best. It was better to her to be overdressed, than too casual and I still consider it as my mantra to this today. www.rag-bone.com @ragandbone

love and object founder

CONSTANCE CUMMINGS Growing up in a household that was passionate about rare and unique jewellery, it was inevitable that Founder and Creative Director, Constance Cummings would develop a deep love for objects that were both beautiful and individual. With this in mind Love and Object was born.

T

ell us what led you to start Love and Object? My Dad and my family are all based in the antique industry and my dad is also trained as a jeweller, so I practically grew up in an auction room. I have always had a passion for unique jewellery, antiques etc. Love & Object came about when I was travelling with my partner Edward on a business trip for his fashion label Von Dadelszen. I would always go with him and bring back jewellery for myself, and then I started buying jewellery for friends too. This lead to me thinking there is quite a niche market here - how about we start a brand. So we started L & O in 2013 and because our clients are dotted around the world we decided to do it online. What does an average day of work look like for you? How often do you travel, where are you based, do you work from an office? I work out of an office based in Britomart in Auckland. I also help with the women swear side of the label Von Dadelszen, so there’s a real crossover between clothing and jewellery. I travel two to three times a year with Edward, and that’s when I bring back a lot of the vintage items. We go to Paris, Milan, and London and stop off in Hong Kong. A normal day in the office is working on the back-end of the website, customer contacts all that type of thing. At the moment I am working on the new collection for Olympia. We regularly update the blog with a behindthe-scenes look into L&O. So, your love for vintage jewellery came first – And then came Olympia? My dad is a trained jeweler but he also has an antique gallery where he sells very beautiful estate jewellery - it is fine jewellery - diamonds etc. So the idea of Olympia came from my love of vintage jewellery but instead of it being crafted out of diamonds and gold I always loved the idea of high-end costume jewellery and wanted to bring something to the market that our customers could wear everyday. I wanted it to be a part of their everyday jewellery collection. Someting they could wear it to the beach swimming, going out for dinner, or casual as well. It does not have the same delicacy and need for care as our vintage pieces do. It’s just a really beautiful parallel to what we do with the vintage collection. The reason it is called Olympia is because the designs are a creative reflection of ancient Roman jewellery. It’s the whole concept of creating something that is new but has that really vintage, old school feel about it. Also, because I did Art History, it also incorporates my love affair of Botticelli. I took a look of inspiration from the painting “Birth of Venus”. Our campaign that we shoot is themed to be a modern version of the goddess Venus.

How effective has social media been for you, in promoting your business? You have had a fair amount of press coverage, including features with bloggers, celebrities, and magazines like Harpers Bazaar and Fashion Quarterly. Did you approach them? Social media is essential to us. We have a very loyal customer base that has come from social media, and it’s a way of talking to our customers from around the world about what we are up to. We will often post a photo of some vintage items that has just landed and customers that will immediately want us to put it aside for them. It’s just a way of getting in touch every day rather than through advertising. It also means we can set the tone of voice for the brand as well. We actually sent a pair of earrings “The key thing that I would take away from to Israel last week, and without social media we wouldn’t have had that reach, or even been able last couple of years, is to just stick to what you to do that.

We are really lucky that New Zealand media picked up on us really quickly. New Zealand love, and what you are passionate about. Paris, one of our key us with opportunities – We only like to work with people who are vintage suppliers who we have been buying from for over three into our brand – It benefits them as much as it benefits us. Kelly years is based there. Also Milan, which is my fiancé’s favourite Thompson was one of our first followers on Instagram – She is place – Both very different cities, but the culture, the love of life, an avid vintage lover, so obviously with me being an art lover, the appreciation for beautiful things, as well as the appreciation there was a massive resonance there. We knew that when we wanted to create What are your 3 essential jewellery pieces for the winter? secondary imagery, Kelly would be willing to help out. With L&O, we purchased a lot of longer style necklaces to wear with shirts, chunky knits, turtlenecks etc. With Olympia, it’s always about the earrings. Is there anything important you wish you had known earlier about business or life that you would like to share with people starting out? The key thing that I would take away from last couple of years, is to just stick to what you love, and what you are passionate about is going to shine through - Your customers will be able to feel that. Don’t get caught up in the white noise of social media and trends. Stick to your guns and truly go from A to B with what your plan is, it will work out.

I am way too squirmy for that - That’s why I foster rhinos’ now, because I can’t be a vet! Best piece of advice in life? Try and be as honest with yourself as you possibly can – know your limits and know when you’ve got a gut feeling – always follow that. What are your favourite websites? Violet Grey – Make up website, I love the content.
First Dibs, The furniture section – I’m obsessed with it, so is my fiancé. We have a wish list that goes for Africa.

SERENDIPITY AVE. New Zealand best friends Nami and Pascale, are the creatives behind New Zealand fashion and street style blog Serendipity Ave. With both being big dreamers and shameless style hunters, they aim to celebrate the ‘serendipity’ in fashion and not take themselves too seriously along the way.

T

ell us how and why you created Serendipity Ave? We created Serendipity Ave as an online platform of our daily inspiration and street style musing. A lot of our inspiration and styling comes from looking overseas and drawing inspiration from the runways, as well as stalking style muses on Instagram! Our current favs are : ‘model off duty looks’ and hair that looks like you didn’t try. Our blog started off as a way to keep in touch with each other, sharing our love of street style and musings grew from there when people started following our account. What inspires you most about New Zealand fashion? Do you have any favourite designers? The most inspiring thing about NZ fashion is that every brand has it’s own strong identity. Especially in fashion where copying styles from other brands is so common! Our favourite designers would have to be Miss Crabb for a bit of simple luxe, Stolen GFC for a grungy tomboy feel and Meadowlark for all the jewels you need in your life! When you’re not blogging, where will we find you? styling tips: Sass & Bide Love of Breeze Jeans $340.

Deadly Ponies Mr Siamese Wasabi $395.

Sass & Bide Castle of Cloud Scarf $200.

We love a good pair of denim and to make it more transeasonal these Sass and Bide denim jeans are the perfect statement option. They can be easily dressed down with some boots or flats (as shown here) or dressed up with a heel. We have also matched them with new season Deadly Ponies ‘Mr Siamese’ in Wasabi for a subtle pop of colour and for some texture we have added the Mr Tuck Crocotile. Doesn’t Deadly Ponies just match so easily with whatever your wearing? Also we still really love the off the shoulder look, fingers crossed it never dies, so have gone with that style top by also tying the Sass and Bide scarf as a top.

trends this season:

One style that will never die is the classic layered look! We are stoked that the colder season allows us to mix all of our wardrobe staples together. Also Yellow is making a huge come back, mark our words! What’s different this year? Start mixing pieces for contrast and texture for example a beautiful silk blouse and a fishnet long sleeve underneath. Or a feminine dress on top of your trusty ripped denim! Nothing is too crazy. Another strong trend coming through is that classic 90’s crushed velvet fabric. It can be so easily worn by itself or layered up when it gets colder. Also we can’t go past a classic slip dress. It will never do any wrong in our eyes. @serendipity.ave www.serendipityave.co.nz

PEOPLE OF FASHION

JULIA FORD THE FACE BEHIND MISS WILSON

One of the most exciting developments for the Kathryn Wilson brand in 2011 was the creation of sister collection, Miss Wilson, designed by Julia Ford. Miss Wilson sits within the umbrella of Kathryn Wilson Footwear, with playful colours, on trend designs and easy-to-wear styles.

H

ow did Miss Wilson came about? Miss Wilson was launched in 2011 as the younger sister to the Kathryn Wilson collection allowing us to offer a fashion forward selection of footwear that moves at a faster pace following trend based silhouettes at a lower price point . The brand has developed its own unique following and is loved by many for its playful, colourful personality. How do you start your day? And what does an average day of work look like for you? After hitting snooze a few too many times, I clear the head with some meditation and then I head straight downstairs to the Nespresso machine, after that I hang out in my favourite room (the walk in wardrobe) for way too long deciding what to wear that day… I’m lucky enough to have a job where every day is different! At the moment we are showing the summer 17 collections to our lovely retailers throughout the country, planning our summer campaign shoot and working with manufacturers to put the summer collections into production for August delivery. We heard you have recently moved from Devonport to Herne Bay above the Kathryn Wilson store, What inspired the move and how are you finding the new office space? Our new offices are above the Herne Bay boutique which we are so excited about…its great to be closer to the action and the retail team, with the cherry on top being able to speak with customers instore and be on the shop floor more often. Favourite Pair of shoes to date? I’m loving the Jackson boot for W’17, I have the sakura floral version and the python on permanent rotation. Your shoes are so unique and stylized. What is the process put into designing each shoe? Kathryn and I begin the design process each season with international travel to Asia or Europe, inspired by what people are wearing on the streets and collating ideas before we put pencil to paper. We take a few days to WWW.SISTERSANDCO.CO.NZ | INSTA: SISTERSSNAPS

ourselves to start sketching out broad ideas and styles. From there we analyse each sketch and idea together, challenging each other to make sure we’re producing our best work. For me it’s about developing and growing from what we’ve done the previous year so each season breathes new life into the brand. We hear that you have an exciting catwalk event for Veuve Clicquot coming up. Can you tell us anymore? This will be our seventh year involved in Clicquot in the Snow in Queenstown and our Sixth catwalk show as part of the event. It’s always a special celebration with local customers and friends of the brand and as an ambassador for Veuve Clicquot Kathryn likes to keep an element of surprise and delight for the guests each year! For the last few years, the crew from Sisters and Co come down, it’s always a treat to have a night out with the girls and all our lovely customers in Queenstown!. Beyond that, I might get in trouble if I say much more! How would you describe the Miss Wilson aesthetic? Who is the Miss Wilson Girl? The Miss Wilson aesthetic is all about playfulness. We love to celebrate colour and texture – it’s about looking down at your feet and not being able to help but smile! Happy feet! In that sense, I guess I’d describe the Miss Wilson girl as adventurous, the kind of girl looking for a fun addition to her outfit. Where is your favourite place in the world to travel? I love Tokyo. It’s so vibrant and full of life; there’s nowhere else like it it! Whats on your playlist? I love the old stuff, it’s the stuff that makes me feel most creative and inspired. Serge Gainsbourg, morrissey and David Bowie are all pretty up there, not only for their music but their style too! What is the best piece of advice you have received? Find a job doing something you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life!

A veteran of countless magazine covers and fashion shoots, Kirsten observed that many of the women that sat in her makeup chair used at least a few “conventional” makeup products they found irritating to the skin. Kirsten’s curiosity led her to begin researching the reason existing organic makeup products were unable to achieve the same results as their traditional, chemicalridden counterparts. From her determination to bridge this historical gap in the market was born Kjær Weis, her namesake company with an ambitious and strategic mission to produce high-performance color cosmetics made with the finest natural and organic ingredients, all without compromising luxury or contemporary design.

krista plews PA P E R P L A N E We caught up with Krista Plews, the co-founder of the Mount’s iconic design studio and store Paper Plane.

T

ell us how Paper Plane came about? What was the concept behind the store? For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved design and shopping. There is something so satisfying about discovering an artist or a new idea. My background is in spatial design and my husband, Tim, is a product designer. We shared a love for all things design and started developing our own furniture range in 2010. It was going well but we kept coming back to idea of engaging directly with our customers and working with other creatives. Opening Paper Plane was a natural progression, enabling us to continue designing along with curating and collaborating with creatives from NZ and afar. There is immense satisfaction in connecting talented creatives with design enthusiasts. What does an average day of work look like for you? Do you have daily routines? We have a wonderful team at Paper Plane now which, after almost 4 years, has given us some long overdue freedom in our days. I usually work from home in the morning, focused on business development while being distracted by Zephyr, our ridiculously cute and overly cuddly Birman. Often, I’ll catch up with a friend for lunch or a beach walk then spend the afternoon in the Paper Plane back office with the team. It’s a nice balance, so I’m hoping it lasts! Living in Mount Maunganui and being amongst beautiful design goodies all day seems like the ultimate dream to many. What are your favourite things about living and working here, and is there any challenges you have faced starting a business in a smaller city? Mount Maunganui is a dream! The off-season local culture is so wonderful and relaxed. The Mount is often referred to as a ‘village’ as the locals are fiercely loyal, connected to each other and proud to call this beautiful place home. We love spending time at the beach, surfing and playing volleyball, and wandering along Mount main street, visiting our favorite shops and eateries. At Paper Plane, we are really conscious of fine tuning our offerings for our market, which is actually quite varied. Summer brings a broad range of tourists which have a slightly different design appreciation than our off-season local customers which means we can explore a wider range of ideas, which we love, of course.

LOCAL STORIES

“The Mount is often referred to as a ‘village’ as the locals are fiercely loyal, connected to each other and proud to call this beautiful place home” You work with your partner Tim on a daily basis. How do you find a balance between work and free time? Luckily, we are the best of friends with a united vision, so it’s quite a privilege. It certainly took time to define our rolls in a professional capacity, which we found worked best when they didn’t overlap too much. After work hours, we try to limit our ‘store chat’ and focus on our personal lives. As any other couple in this situation would understand, this requires considerable effort! You both come from design backgrounds. Do you still make time to design? We’ve been so consumed with running our store over the past few years that product design has taken a back seat. We are now circling back to it which is exciting, but designing and manufacturing in New Zealand is expensive so there are challenges to consider. On another note, we have really enjoyed collaborating with creatives that we represent at Paper Plane on exclusive products and are excited to continue exploring this area of design as well. All of your products in Paper Plane are so uniquely beautiful. Do you have a process to selecting what to sell, and how do you find new goodies? Our constant hunger for new products ensures that our range will always be evolving. When we find beautiful brands, we consider various factors like quality, market appeal, price and how it will fit in with our current collections. We are especially interested in independent brands that focus on sustainability, natural materials and small batch, hand-made goods. In terms of how we find our goodies? That’s our little secret.. With so many beautiful things in your shop, how do you decide which thing to take home with you? Does your house look like another Paper Plane shop? We are on the verge of moving into our new home which is literally a blank canvas with white floors, walls and ceilings. This is our dream to be able design and curate with few

quickfire limitations and no-one but ourselves in mind! While we will definitely take select items from the store home, we’re also keen to explore artists, designers and ideas that push the boundaries of design a little more than we can justify at Paper Plane. How would you describe your personal clothing style? Would you say that there is a similarity between your dress style and interior decorating? My personal style is clean and effortless. This is achieved by selecting pieces that are made from beautiful materials cut to perfection. I find that as I grow older that my look is simplifying and tipping quite masculine. My personal style is a lot more reserved and classic than my design style which is based on timelessness but accompanied by a very distinct twist of ‘weird’. What is one piece of advice you can give our readers on interior decorating? Invest well in the items you interact with every day. Purchase a quality set of knives, a beautiful and comfortable sofa and a good bed. These things are often overlooked but bring so much joy when prioritized. Buy less and buy well.

The best part of your day is?

After work, Tim and I often go for a walk along the beachfront and share a strawberry ice cream. The little things are usually the best things.

Currently reading?

Monocle magazine. It my version of the news a briefing on global affairs, business, culture and design.

Favourite artist / designer?

I am in awe of Spanish born architect and designer, Patricia Urquiola. She has explored a vast range of unique design concepts and worked with countless innovative brands. Critics have deemed her the ‘Designer of the Decade’ and I tend to agree!

On a Sunday you?

Enjoy family. We often head down to Whakatane to spend time with Tim’s family and enjoy and relaxed day with them. If we’re feeling energetic, we’ll find a beach or bush walk to explore.

The best thing about living in the Mount is?

I love the relaxed pace in the Mount where people have time to chat and connect. I’m also really impressed by the growing vibrancy thanks to all the creative people doing neat things that are bringing our community closer together.

the making of F LOW E R E T T E Kat McLeod, the lady who spends her days amongst flowers and beautiful scents, and the clever creator behind Flowerette, Tauranga’s new online florist.

H

ow did you and when did you get started in the floral industry? Back in 2005 each day on my way from high school I passed this really cute florist shop overflowing with flowers and it always grabbed my attention. One day I walked in and asked if they ever needed a hand around the store. They got me in for a trial, mainly cleaning the shop, filling up buckets with water, and helping out generally. To my delight they offered me a part time job. I loved working there and soon enough I started to learn the floristry side of the job, which really drew me in. Your flower arrangements are beautiful, how did you develop your signature style? I like to let the flowers speak for themselves, keeping the arrangements more simple and elegant, showing off the flower for what it is. It’s the little things like contrasts of textures and colours that really add interest to arrangements. Another fave style is one single variety of flower en masse. Think a huge vase full of double tulips. It’s understated yet luxurious. After finishing your degree in Fashion, what inspired you to change direction and start Flowerette? I went on a few adventures during my early twenties, moving back and forth overseas and then returning home to study Fashion design. One thing that never changed was that I always worked as a florist to get by. I gave the fashion industry a good nudge, and learnt so much, but then it really dawned on me how much love and passion I had for flowers. It was a passion that came so effortlessly yet I had always overlooked it. My Fiancé and I were planning on moving to Mount Maunganui so the timing felt right to start up Flowerette. I felt there was space in the market for a new florist. Lucky for me fashion and floristry often interlink so now I experience the best of both worlds!

WWW.SISTERSANDCO.CO.NZ | INSTA: SISTERSSNAPS

“Choose New Zealand grown and seasonal flowers. For optimal vase life recut the stems & change the water every second day and ensure the vessel is clean. Keeping them out of direct sunlight or heating will help too”.

What does an average day of work look like for you? At the moment Flowerette is online based and I work from my home studio. I get fresh flowers 3 days a week either from local growers or the Auckland flower markets. They start at 6am 3 days a week and thanks to technology I can live stream the auction from home to buy the flowers. When the flowers arrive I recut them and put them all into buckets of water. Next I will make up all the orders for that day. I tend to do the deliveries as well. It’s so fun seeing the recipients face light up when they receive their flowers! If I am super busy I will put them on a courier. Then I clean up the mess I have made, clean any old buckets or vases and prep for the next day. In the weekends I will have events and parties where people want their house adorned with flowers or weddings to install. What is your favourite flower? Do you always make room for fresh flowers in your home? There are so many favourites and it constantly changes with the seasons, however the Peony has to be one of my ultimate favourites. Yes, I always have a vase of flowers somewhere in the house! My favourite spots are the bedside table, kitchen bench or bathroom. You don’t always have to have a huge arrangement, sometimes a few stems or a posy in a little jar is all you need. Is there any challenge’s you have faced working for yourself ? How do you stay motivated? Some days can be challenging, just like any work place, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. It is inspiring seeing something you’ve dreamed of and worked so hard towards come into fruition and that keeps me motivated. What business achievement are you most proud of to date? Launching Flowerette and seeing the positive response it’s had so far. It’s nice to know people like your product! I love seeing the way people light up when they receive a surprise bouquet of flowers from someone they love. Best thing about living and working in Mount Maunganui? The beach, the people and the relaxed pace of life.

EMMA BIDOIS

LA TRIBE CO-FOUNDER & DESIGNER

Emma Bidois is the co-founder of stylish footwear label, La Tribe. She grew up in Mount Maunganui and now resides in Auckland where she designs shoes suitable for modern lifestyles, made with care and attention to detail.

Tell us about how you and your husband started La Tribe? What was the concept behind the brand? La Tribe started as a passion project, which has grown so much bigger than we originally planned or dreamed. We always felt there was a gap in the market for a boutique indie style shoe brand, which had a high-end look and feel without the price tag. Can you walk us though an average workday for you? I try to clear my emails with a coffee first thing in the morning, dealing with international suppliers means we get emails all hours! Because we’re a small business our roles are varied which makes it both exciting but also a challenge as each day can vary so much. Some days we’re approving new La Tribe samples and planning marketing and content creation to having a meeting with the accountant working on budgets and growth strategies with our team. I actually love the business side just as much as the creative part so to be able to both is super rewarding for me as part of my role. What are the inspirations behind the Dream Weaver collection for Winter 2017? Dream Weaver was a song back in the 70’s - The lyrics were inspired by Bob Dylan’s movement for freedom to express yourself and individualism. I love seeing women who are confident in their own skin and doing their thing! So creating a Winter range with this type of women in mind and imagining her wearing them in her everyday is a buzz. How would you describe your own personal style? I’m such a jeans and tee shirt girl at heart. I love how French women dress, natural, effortless but still chic. What are your 5 essential winter wardrobe items? Vintage denim jacket, Remain leather stretch tights, Marle MiMi Mohair Jumper, Anine Bing boyfriend jeans, La Tribe Jagger Boots. You grew up in Mount Maunganui, does the relaxed beachside lifestyle you grew up with have an impact on your footwear designs? Being a Mountie at heart definitely influences our designs WWW.SISTERSANDCO.CO.NZ | INSTA: SISTERSSNAPS

in so many ways. Our graphic designer is from the Mount and the production company we use in Auckland is also owned by Mounties. All these hands and creative minds come together to influence our brand and designs. Every collection we are conscious to produce designs, which are comfortable and have an every-day lifestyle in mind. I think women in the Mount have a good eye for quality and balance the ‘effortless casual’ look so well so I think its important for us to create designs with this in mind.

“Wear pieces which make you feel confident and happy, don’t dress to impress others. Be you do you”.

You are about to become a mother, how do you think this will alter the way you run your business? This is a really good question! We’ve worked hard to build a strong team behind us who are just a passionate about the brand as we are. I think it’s quite easy to slip into a role as a business owner to try and do everything and not letting go enough and letting your team step up. Having a baby on the way has taught me that I can’t do everything and delegation and structure is must. As a result our business is a lot more efficient and our team are excited to have new roles and challenges. It’s also given me more creative headspace to come up with new ideas to expand so watch this space. We really love what we do and we can’t wait to have new little bubba to share it with. Tell us about some of your favourite spots in Auckland? Where would we find you spending your free time? We have recently been renovating our home so I’m desperately trying to think of cool places other than Bunnings where I’ve been spending my weekeneds haha. Food joints have defintely been a strong theme for us these past 8 months ! Amano a new italian restaurant at the Britomart. The fitout is so inspiring and the food is amazing. Green Leaf Organics and Little Bird café – Love going to these places on a Saturday morning for a healthy breakie. Depo – Seafood there is so good. What is one piece of fashion advice that you can share with our readers? Wear pieces which make you feel confident and happy, don’t dress to impress others. Be you.

O C TO P U S ’ S G A R D E N “We came down to the mount for a weekend visit, and had the realisation that living in Auckland didn’t really suit our lifestyle. We saw that the space was up for sale and that inspired the thought to do something completely different”. What inspired you to Open the Octopus Garden? What led you to this point? We needed a commercial kitchen for our catering, and started looking at buying a café or renting a commercial space up in Auckland - it was just so expensive! We came down to the mount for a weekend visit, and had the realisation that living in Auckland didn’t really suit our lifestyle. We saw that the space was up for sale and that inspired the thought to do something completely different! I think when we were down we noticed there was heaps of young people doing cool creative things, everyone looked so happy and healthy! We hadn’t run a café before or had any hospo experience but then we thought - well what are we wanting to provide here? Simple, amazing food with the best ingredients and amazing service is essential, and good coffee. These are all things that we like and we thought well if that’s whats important to us, it will be important to other people too. Where did you get the name? Coming up with a name was hard! We couldn’t agree on a name for ages! Amy would suggest names that she would be really excited about and they would just fall flat on me, and vice versa. In the end Amy came up with it, and it just felt right. It was nautical, it communicated the garden and it was unique and easy to remember. We love the throw back of Octopus’s Garden being a Beatles song, and I love the Beatles so it worked out really cool. Can you explain your menu to us? How do you create your dishes? The first couple of months coming up with the menu has been very organic, we use a lot of dishes that we have created before with catering, and Amy has an amazing repertoire of recipes (over 300 cookbooks worth), so over the last couple of months we have been trying out our favourite recipes, and now we are starting to rotate through some of the best and the public favourites. We want to keep progressing and experimenting with different things.

WWW.SISTERSANDCO.CO.NZ | INSTA: SISTERSSNAPS

What’s your favourite meal on the menu? Pulled pork tacos, definitely, and the ‘Tradie’ is always pretty popular which is a brioche bun with free range eggs and dry cured bacon. What is on your playlist at the moment? That’s a tough one! We’ve been playing quite a bit of Julia Stone at the moment. In the café we try to play great beats that everyone will appreciate. We love Flume and London Grammar, we also don’t mind a bit of Neil Young and Fleetwood Mac. Rolling Stones are also quite often on rotation. Best piece of food / health related advice? Amy - I’ve studied nutrition and done quite a look of work around nutrition, and the biggest thing for me is doing what is right for you rather than following a specific diet. If your body doesn’t agree with gluten just don’t eat gluten, but try not to be too hung up on it so that it starts to effect your social life, sometimes it’s healthier to be unhealthy sometimes. It always comes back to balance, there’s a reason people have been saying it for years and years. Success is? Tom - A balanced, happy lifestyle. For us to run a successful café, it would only be successful if our lives outside of work were as happy and balanced as they are inside the café. We could run the best café in town but if you have no life outside of work then I wouldn’t call that a success. It would only be a sucess if we were achieving everything we wanted to achieve outside of work as well.

quickfire Amy - Creating the life you want to live – a balance between work, lifestyle, friends & family. We loving coming to work everyday.
