2017 draws to a close we can look back upon a year of technological advances within retail, the continuing power of instagram, a thrilling Americas Cup win, a change of government and a revival of 70’s fashion. Admits all the social media noise we are so proud to produce and give you something to sit down, relax over a glass of bubbles and pursue while taking some time out - that is the purpose of Mode for us. I want to say a special thanks to the incredibly talented Rhianna who put the magazine together, Fianna our online superstar and Rose for her insane styling and fashion eye. This season we have done it in a more ‘catalogue’ style format so you can mark and view the collections that we have in store and hopefully making the gift giving and build up to the ‘silly season’ a lot less crazy. ALSO - come and take advantage of our free gift wrapping service and we are happy to deliver as well! As 2017 draws to a close there have been many highlights at Sisters & Co including the opening of the Sisters Swap store which recycles our beautiful clothing and donates to Homes of Hope charity, we have moved Pair our shoe store back into
DIRECTOR OF SISTERS & CO Sisters & Co. We now have a gift area curated by the fabulous Julia Duncan and as Mode goes to print we are about to relaunch our Sisters brand designed by our own Nancy Zhang and made here in New Zealand. This season’s spring and summer fashion has taken a step up with the colour palate. My favourites being the terracotta’s, golds, khakis and lots of earthy muted tones. Juliette Hogan’s spring/summer collection is her strongest ever with stunning prints, gorgeous camis and silk wrap dresses - I want one in every colour! Kathryn Wilson’s bright and breezy summer collection has flown out the door, Karen Walker’s quirky navy and white themed collection is super wearable. Fun, effortlessly cool local brand Marle has a resort collection that is in all the staff ’s wardrobe! So here’s to a fabulous summer ahead, reading and relaxing, wining and dining, and sharing happiness with your nearest and dearest under the New Zealand summer sun.

“Sisters Swap has been open since june and already we have been able to donate a massive $4398.44 to the wonderful local charity, Homes of Hope.”
B
eing a women, we all love fashion and if anyone is like me, there is nothing that gets my heart racing as much as a new season. Yet the flip side of that is the waste and piling up of old season’s garments that are still beautiful and too precious to throw away. This issue has plagued myself and customers for a long time. During a business course where we looked at the issues facing our businesses and clients, this continued to come up. Another issue was the fact that the fashion industry is one of the biggest environmental polluters in the world. From the chemicals and fibres used to make and dye fabrics to the manufacturing, packaging, shipping and garment care – the discarding of fashion has turned into a massive strain on our beautiful planet. This is how the idea of Sisters Swap came about. The products we sell at Sisters & Co are premium brands made with beautiful fabrics and care. It is not fast, throw-away fashion and for me, walking past my wardrobe bursting full of beautiful garments not worn, was soul destroying and I constantly was thinking how can we fix this. So here is the solution, which is great for your wardrobe, the environment, and the community. Anything brought from Sisters & Co ONLY can be brought in (if in good condition) and then swapped for credit on your Sisters & Co account – we only keep 15% for an admin fee, 10% (or the full amount) goes to Homes of Hope and the rest goes on as credit for your Sisters account. It was originally going to be an online project but the response was overwhelming. It now has a physical store so customers can come in, and look and feel and touch the garments. On the first of every month our diligent CFO donates 10% of sales to Homes of Hope. So far we have raised $4398.44. My goal is for Sisters Swap to get it to such a size that we are able to donate a considerable amount to Homes of Hope, to make a difference to this amazing charity. - Rodelle Payne

PEOPLE OF FASHION
KAREN WALKER Launching her eponymous label in 1989 at 18, Karen Walker is not just a New Zealand fashion icon but presides over fashion globally. For the fifth consecutive year, Karen Walker has made the Business of Fashion 500 list placed between ... .....Kayne West and Karl Lagerfeld. Not bad for a kiwi girl who started her fashion label with two t-shirt designs! Always walking to the beat of her own drum, Karen Walker’s off-beat designs see her mixing floral with military touches, blazers with bright orange checks, and fluros with pastels. With a loyal following, Walker continues to shape the fashion industry. Walker launched an eyewear collection alongside her fashion label, developing a cult following that is loved by bloggers and celebrities such as Rihanna, and Lady Gaga. With a jewellery line, stockists around the globe, and stand-alone stores, Walker is a fashion disruption and an absolute favourite for the team at Sisters & Co. With her clever and creative husband, Mikhail Gherman, as the brand’s director, we cannot wait to see what the formidable duo do next. Here is a designer insight from when she recently visited the Mount. Tell us about the Karen Walker Resort 2018 collection? Where did you draw inspiration from? The new collection is a cultural clash between the notoriously indulgent Marie Antoinette and 1970’s beat boys. What’s your morning routine? Up at 6.30 am, child out the door to the bus stop by 7.40, then some exercise (yoga/tennis/walk), followed by 15 minutes of piano practice. THEN I’m ready to face my day. An average day involves? I try to split my work day so it’s 2 hours quality design time, no more than 2 hours of meetings, and the rest for all the other stuff.

quickfire View from your office? The back streets of Auckland’s inner Western suburbs (not terribly picturesque) with not bad views to the Waitakere Ranges and a peek of harbour to the North.
The best part of your day is?
That differs every day but often it’ll be a moment in front of my piano, on the tennis court or snuggling with my daughter in front of an episode of Doctor Who.
Favourite food? There’s a lot of food I love and I really like to cook so it’s very hard to pick just one or two things, but I must say that virtually anything I’ve cooked with a Yotam Ottolenghi recipe has always been amazing. Book you are reading? Well we’re working on a pop-up book store in our Newmarket store in November and December in partnership with Hedleys Books of Masterton, so I’ve been reading a lot in the last few months! But right now, I’m taking a break from the store reading list and going full immersion into Mark Vette’s Dog Zen so I can communicate stress-free and confidently with the newest member of the household.
Best life lesson? Only work with people who get it.
Your Idol is? There is many to list, and they tend to mostly be creatives. To list just a few: Pablo Picasso, Amelia Earhart, David Bowie, suffragists and suffragettes everywhere, Evelyn Waugh, Larry David, P. G. Wodehouse, Pushkin, Johnny Cash, Jarvis Cocker, Lee Miller, Virginia Woolf, Morrissey, Glenn Gould, and Grayson Perry.
Osmosis for absolutely everything but in summer their Protect becomes even more important. The best sunblock I’ve ever used.
-Karen Walker

Inspiration comes from? Anywhere.
Favourite fashion pieces for summer? This season I’m especially loving the Sadie tinted lenses, a wide-brimmed hat and our Antonia Top in Court Floral. What are your go-to beauty products?
PEOPLE OF FASHION
JULIETTE HOGAN FASHION DESIGNER AND GIRLBOSS
Juliette Hogan designs what the modern woman wants. Her clothing is not overcomplicated or overstyled. It conveys a contemporary simplicity with a focus on cut, cloth, craftsmanship, and tailoring. Juliette Hogan masters a feminine aesthetic that is grounded in the masculine. Your day starts with? A run, nice and early before my little girl wakes, then breakfast with her – homemade muesli and fresh fruit, before I head out the door for work. On your desk? It’s a mess – I’m sitting here looking at it as a type. There are two pairs of our new eyewear collection, pins, keys, my phone, my wallet, pens, lots of scraps of paper with sketches of new design ideas, hand cream, a jar of almonds, a pantone colour reference folder, my water bottle. I could go on … I’m embarrassed of the state of it really. Go to websites? Boutique-homes.com. I’m always looking for beautiful places to stay for our next adventure. Lunchtime, coffee or tea? I don’t drink hot drinks – and I never really have. I’m a fan of just cooled, still water. Favourite piece in your wardrobe? I couldn’t pick just one piece – there are too many. I generally swap out my clothes each season and refresh my wardrobe with new season pieces. I’m loving the Tess dress this season and anything in our Silk Bloom Print and the Always Slip – it’s called that for a reason – you always want to be wearing it. The one piece that remains constantly throughout the seasons though is my black leather pencil dress, it’s my go-to and pretty much appropriate for all occasions when paired with the right shoe. Your greatest strength? My efficiency. Favourite quote? “Be who you are and say what you feel. Those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”

Success is? Whatever you have defined it to be. Every person has different ideas about what they hope to achieve and for me success is loving and being loved, being a respected employer and providing a workplace where people can learn and be part of a bigger journey, being in a position to be able to give back and help those who need help.
Juliette Hogan High Summer
Summer Holiday Plans? We just booked a camp site up north for a week. I have an absolute love of camping and grew up sending every summer down on the Coromandel camping at Opito Bay until I was about 14. We haven’t yet been with Myra, she’ll be 18 months when we go so fingers crossed it’s a success! Dion and I are then heading over to Tasmania for a week towards the end of January to stay at the most amazing place in the middle of a dam in the middle of nowhere.
“Be who you are and say what you feel. Those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”
Day ends with? I finish up at 4 pm so I can head home and spend some time with Myra. If the sun is shining we head out for a wander and pick flowers. She sees such delight in the small things and it warms my heart. I dance with her in my arms every night before bed. Music is a big part of our lives and she is so drawn to it too. Once she is down we get to relax and unwind from our busy days over a home cooked meal and a glass of wine.

COLOUR GUIDE THE PANTONE EDIT
The new season is just about upon us, which means a new colour palette for your wardrobe. The Pantone Colour Institute – known for its colour of the year prediction, had shortlisted the fashion colour set to pop next season based on colour palettes used by designers in their Spring/ Summer 2017 runway collections. According to Pantone, the upcoming season brings all the colours of nature actualised on garments. Bringing a mixture of vitality, relaxation, and the great outdoors, starting from that avocado-reminiscent greenery, and kale – its more muted counterpart, to energetic primrose yellow, crimson red, and tones that convey a sense of earthiness. The first place of the summer 2017 colour trends goes to Niagara – a calming and soft blue shade, reminiscent of the indigo colour favoured by denim enthusiasts. Versatile enough to be matched with nearly every shade, this relaxed blue is definitely one to incorporate into your summer wardrobe.

to Balenciaga, presented this vibrant green colour in their spring summer collections this year, creating a refreshing and revitalising hue in the fashion world. The second green hue from the list is Kale, a more of a military-olive hue. Next to the vibrant and neutral shades on Pantones list, Kale can certainly serve as a strong background. Featured on everything from outwear to slip dresses, this colour is a must for the new season. Never had much of a thing for pink? Be prepared to fall in love with the charm and sweetness of this colour in the coming season. According to Pantone, the top two hues for the season are Pale Dogwood and Pink Yarrow, but nearly every hue can be seen in fashion for the coming season. Presented on garments from Valentino, ChloÊ, and Hermès, this is most definitely one of our favourites!

Fashion lovers around the world have always looked to the French for their effortless and minimalist sense of style. There are many different ways to pull off a paired back Parisian look – it is key to adopt a minimalist approach with the just right amount of detail, and the outcome will be effortless. As demonstrated by Coco Chanel, the iconic queen of Parisian Chic, French style is all about getting the basics right. French women will take time before making a purchase and they do not fall into fad trends or fast fashion. The first thing on their mind is how an individual piece will sit in their existing wardrobe.

It is important that each component of an outfit works to create a complete outfit and overall chic look. This is the number one style secret that the French have mastered. Great style is about investing in quality pieces and how an entire look comes together and each piece complements the other.

of this rulebook. Classic colours such as navy, red, and tan are key in a French wardrobe. Opt for white jeans instead of stock standard blue, or tanned leathers instead of jet black. Once you get the basics right it is a lot easier to experiment with the details.
kjaer weis lipstick compact $95.00
Another important element of French fashion is knowing restraint. A Parisian women never mix and match different prints and patterns, because for them – balance is crucial. Make your outfit have one or two key tones or stick to muted hues. If your dress is feminine and floral, offset it with a little androgyny. If your outfit is very formal, add an effortless element with a messy bun or sneakers. The idea is to reach a place of equilibrium, where the presence of gender is not obvious.

And most importantly the French are all about owning who they are, and embracing their imperfections. They are confident in their style choices and their bodies. Being genuine and having a strong sense of personal style is central to French fashion. Thus, the French characterise the idea that fashion is an art and like most art forms, the rules of classic fashion must be learnt before they are bent for the purpose of self-expression.

JULIE WIERSTRA Style, grace and humour all in one, we caught up with Julie Wierstra; Sisters & Co’s ultra organised stock manager. Tell us about your role as stock manager at Sisters & Co? At Sisters and Co we get new stock arriving everyday and it’s my job to get it ready to sell in the shop.
Favourite thing to do in Mount Maunganui is: Well I like food so I like to eat out at different places. I also love the summer night markets where the food is.
How does your day start? What’s your morning routine? I never leave the house without my face done and my hair straighted. Once I get to work I start my day with a coffee from Coco’s Espresso – I just recently changed to almond milk. It’s so nice! Way better than normal milk.
Favourite thing about working at Sisters & Co? I love the people here so much, it’s like a big family everyone is kind and funny.
season faves:
How would you describe your own personal style? I tend to stick to dark tones – my wardrobe is almost completely made up of black! I like to dress casual with a luxe edge. What was your last fashion purchase? One Teaspoon denim skirts from Sisters Swap – I loved the style so much that I got it in two colours. What’s on your wish-list for this seasons summer wardrobe? T-shirts! I’m in love with Anine Bing and Ragdoll tees this season. Who’s on your playlist at the moment? At the moment I am listening to a lot of Bryan Adams, my Mum use to listen to him when I was younger. I love classic beats from the 70’s and 80’s. Your guilty pleasure is: I honestly don’t have any. I don’t feel guilty about any of my pleasures!

Claire Hammon
MEADOWLARK JEWELLERY Established in 2006, and grounded in a very 90’s commitment to authenticity, Meadowlark creates beautiful and meaningful jewellery for self-possessed women and men. Artist couple, Claire Hammon and Greg Fromont, design everything together, considering every angle of every piece, finding beauty in overlooked materials or concepts, and striving to make something both intimate and everlasting. Tell us about how you and your husband started Meadowlark? Greg and I were having dinner one night and started talking about combining our skills and making some jewellery. We started it from nothing! With a busy day-to-day life and deadlines it can be hard to find time for the creative process. Where do you find your inspiration and how do you ensure you have the time and space to design? This is the hardest part of the job, over the years we have tried different ways to work the creative process and now we try to design all year round so it’s never one big stressful month leading up to a new collection. Inspiration is hard to find but we are always inspired by art & architecture. A lot of our best designs are just epiphanies. What does an average day of work look like for you? Do you have daily routines? We don’t really have a routine, every day is really different. Some days I will be directing a photoshoot and the next day I might be designing for

a future collection. Other days I will be working across visuals for marketing or I will be working with our jewellers and production manager on upcoming designs. There’s an endless list of things to do! What are the inspirations behind the Liberty collection for Summer? Liberty was inspired by flowers, we are always inspired by nature and our phones are filled with images of strange flowers we come across. A lot of the pieces were actually inspired “Liberty was inspired by flowers, we are by magnifying the centre of flowers and discovering always inspired by nature and our phones there is another tiny garden within each flower.

How would you describe your own personal style? we I am definitely not a trend based person, I wear a lot of NZ made brands and I go for simple designs that have some kind of special feature that only I may know about. I wear a lot of layered up gold Meadowlark earrings, I’ve been getting more ear piercings so I can wear all my favorites at once. What are your 5 essential items in your wardrobe for this summer its our summer in New Zealand? Miss Crabb robe to cover up and protect my skin from the sun, a hat, my favourite Lonely swimsuit, Celine sunglasses and sandals, and a simple black dress. What do you and your husband have planned for the summer holidays? We haven’t made any plans but if we can find some time to get away, we are hoping to visit family in Argentina and get inspired. What is one piece of jewellery styling advice that you can share with our readers? There are no rules, so wear what you like how you like!

ELLA DRAKE MONARC JEWELLERY FOUNDER
From modelling for Gucci in the Italian fashion capital, to learning the jewellery craft in Florence, we caught up with the London-based girl boss to discover how she came to launch Monarc Jewellery.
W
hen did you start Monarc Jewellery and what is the ethos behind the brand? I started Monarc Jewellery & Concierge in 2016 as a brand that would follow my own aesthetic and morals. Monarc Jewellery was born out of the desire to present intelligent design at reasonable and honest prices to the retail jewellery market. Its objective is to create modern, classic jewellery to be worn now and passed on to future generations. Monarc Jewellery is the ready-to-wear side of my business, the ‘concierge’ element of the brand offers a bespoke service that caters to those looking for something unique, more elaborate and sentimental premium engagement rings and future heirlooms, in other words.

What inspired you to make the move to London from New Zealand? I left New Zealand as a 20-year-old. After 5 years between Sydney and Milan, it was a job opportunity that inspired me to pack up and move to London. I managed the European brand portfolios for an international jewellery and production company for 4 years prior to starting Monarc Jewellery. Do you think working as a model in the fashion industry has helped you with your journey to launching Monarc Jewellery? My love for design was cemented through watching how top fashion houses go about their creative process, to see them spin magic and actualise a new collection each season left me in wonderment. I was contracted to Gucci (Italy) for a few years and being a part of this behind-the-scenes action has helped me to clarify my taste, work ethic, and approach to designing for my own brand.

How would you describe your own personal style? My partner and I joke about a saying, “if you choose comfort over style then you should have neither.” I try to be practical with my personal style, I hate feeling too done-up, it’s just not me. Clean hair, a fresh face and a great jacket is my fail-safe formula. A tailored boiler suit is my favourite go-to piece, and I definitely opt for a darker palette for my city wardrobe. I like to buy quality clothing and accessories – I’m all for quality over quantity. I select clothes from brands that are well-thought-out and consider the environment, sustainability, and ethics. I apply these principals to Monarc Jewellery and expect the same from clothing brands! Selene Necklace 9ct Yellow Gold & White Topaz $485.00 | Selene Silver Necklace $185.00

What were the key fashion trends you saw on the streets during your European summer? Great bias cut slip dresses, so fluid and elegant. Slips were a massive trend, and for good reason. Feminine midi-length wrap dresses. Shades of lilac – my fave was a muted grey lilac. Full swimsuits – yay! Your favourite memory of the year? A weekend in Amsterdam across the European summer – my sister and her fiancé came to visit from NZ. We cycled around sampling Amsterdam’s city beaches and picnicked in Holland Park. The weekend poured out sunshine for us to play in.

I’m so lucky to call Mount Maunganui my hometown! I keep charging through my day. can’t wait to visit in February 2018. What is one piece of jewellery styling advice that you can share with our readers? Wear jewellery that feels like it is a part of you and your lifestyle. If jewellery feels odd to wear, then it probably looks a bit out of place. What was the biggest challenge you faced when launching Monarc jewellery and how did you overcome it? I’ve gone against my gut instinct two times in business, and both times ended in a less than desirable outcome. If an idea doesn’t bode well from the beginning, then I think you need to write it off and not force something to happen. Financial forecasting is my greatest challenge. Trying to establish a business budget can be really painful, especially when you’re trying to look 12-24 months into the future for a growing brand. Working with precious metals (platinum, gold, and silver) and natural stones or diamonds can be tricky to manage financially, monthly cash flow is essential to making it all run smoothly. I spread-sheet a lot and employ accounting tools to make sure nothing goes awry.

CAPSULE WARDROBE SELECTED BY ANDRENE MCGINITY
2.
Tired of having a closet full of clothes but nothing to wear? Then Sisters capsule wardrobe may be the answer to your cluttered closet prayers. When it comes to fashion and style, we’re firm believers in ‘less is more.’ While it is fun to have a wardrobe that is constantly filled with new clothes, many of us will find ourselves reverting back to old favourites and classic staple pieces. A capsule wardrobe is a thoughtful and balanced approach to shopping. Simple definition? It is a mini wardrobe made up of really versatile pieces that you completely LOVE to wear. As we move into Summer, it is the perfect opportunity to try out the capsule wardrobe method if you are not a convert already. Some items are a given – a few pairs of really great jeans, cotton basics in wearable shades, fine knits, and versatile footwear. We have taken inspiration from the many beautiful hues that are breezing through Sisters & Co at the moment, from bright blues to ruby reds, and plans to inject a pop of colour this season. The key thing to remember when creating a capsule wardrobe is that it is meant to be invigorating and enjoyable. The goal is to take control of your wardrobe and try something new. You can edit the process however you wish, for example some women may need two capsule wardrobes – one for work and one for the weekends. If it fits your lifestyle then give it a go and no matter what, make it yours – and enjoy it.

RAGDOLL LA
W
hat motivated you to launch Ragdoll LA? I saw a gap in the loungewear market for vintage washed blacks, greys, and army style tones that are chic and sexy. At the time, no brand did rock ‘n’ roll loungewear with the faded tees I was always on the hunt for. I wanted to create that one favourite tee you fear losing or ruining in the wash. So you can buy it over again and own it in multiple colours. What’s the process that goes into making a t-shirt? I usually start with the fabric and wash. The wash process makes the difference, and can sometimes take a long time to create the desired fade and feel. I also work extensively with the fit. Our vintage tee is like a boy tee, but still feminine and flattering. Tell us about how the label has grown over the years, and what helped it to succeed? We have seen amazing growth. We started as only online and direct to consumers. After a couple of weeks, Fred Segal contacted us about wanting to carry the brand. We are now worldwide and sell to about 250 boutiques, as well as Nordstrom in the US. We had a lot of organic press from early on, with celebrities and influencers wearing our brand. What pieces are your best sellers? Our best sellers are the Vintage Tee, Distressed Tee, hoodies, track pants, and anything camo. We always have animal print in the collection, and do really well with those. Do you think your Swedish background has influenced the brand’s aesthetic? Yes, I think that’s where the colour palette comes from. Black, white, grey, and army tones have always been the base. It is clean, chic, and also feminine. What does your go-to weekend style look like? The knitted leopard pant and a faded black tee, with fur slides and a cashmere sweater for when it’s cold. Do you think that your personal style is reflected in your home? Yes, I think so. I invest in a couple of statement pieces for my closet, which I use for years. That’s what makes your style unique and not too trendy. Same thing with our house – I invest in design pieces and keep them forever. I love antiques mixed with midcentury modern pieces. What’s your favourite room and why? The kitchen. That’s where everybody is after a long day and where everyone ends up after a long party. We always have guests come over. I also love to cook!

What does your workspace style look like, and what would we find on your desk? It’s messy! My desk is covered in images for inspiration, measuring tapes, coffee sketches, and fabric cuttings. If you weren’t a fashion designer, what would you be? I’d be a jewellery designer. I love jewellery, and the fact you can buy something and keep it forever. I always wear the same pieces and anything new I buy becomes a part of my everyday collection. What’s on your Christmas wish list? Books, you can never have too many books! And anything from Celine.

Kathryn Wilson New Zealand’s shoe darling, Kathryn Wilson, is as bright and bubbly in person as her latest footwear collection. With a business mantra of empowering women, Kathryn enjoys giving back to the community and making women feel fabulous all through her shoes. With over 14-years as one of New Zealand’s leading shoe designers, Kathryn has forever changed traditional footwear in New Zealand. Kathryn was the first exclusive shoe brand to show at New Zealand fashion week in 2010. This was followed in 2011 by a media-driven show opened by Kimbra where 2500 people attended. In 2011 she also opened her first retail pop-up in the shape of a shoe box, this was then transported to Wellington and Christchurch. She now has three of her own retail stores in New Zealand and a strong presence in 100 stores nationwide. Bringing fun to fashion, Kathryn hosts the annual Veuve Clicquot fashion show in Queenstown, she also gives back to the community and shares her inspirational story by hosting and speaking at many charity events. This season the Kathryn Wilson and Miss Wilson collections are all about much loved classics with a nautical feel. There is a decidedly French, sporty sense illustrated by the use of navy and white stripe detail. The hero piece of the collection has to be the elegant mule, available in red or ink suede with metallic touches. Head into to Sisters & Co to view this sell-out collection!
T
ell us about your top highlights form 2017? We have had a great year of change and development both personally and in the business for 2017. We have moved our HQ to be closer to the retail stores and team which has been a great move keeping us all connected. Personally I am really enjoying seeing my daughter Lola Belle develop into a sassy wee mini-me with determination and a great sense of humour… parenthood is a wonderful journey! With a busy day-to-day life and tight deadlines it can be hard to find time for the creative process. Where do you find your inspiration and how do you ensure you have the time and space to design? For us the inspiration comes from friends, travel, film, music and vintage references… taking the time to get creative and put ideas onto paper that have been developing for months is the fun part of our job… Julia and I always have far too many ideas and have to whittle down hundreds of drawings to be the finalised collections for both Kathryn Wilson and Miss Wilson.

EMMA BIDOIS
LA TRIBE CO-FOUNDER & DESIGNER
Emma Bidois is the co-founder of stylish footwear label, La Tribe. She grew up in Mount Maunganui and now resides in Auckland with her husband and business partner, Dane, and baby Nyla. She designs shoes suitable for modern lifestyles, made with care and attention to detail.
T
ell us the story behind starting La Tribe? La Tribe was born from frustration at not being able to find shoes with a bohemian high-end feel.
You are a business owner, director, HR manager, designer, mum, wife and stylist. How do you juggle all these roles and which is your favorite? To be honest I don’t juggle, I survive, haha. A good friend gave me some advice before Nyla was born – she said: “Theres no gold medal at the end.” I think sometimes as women we try so hard to be on top of everything but the reality is when your operating on no sleep and a job list that never ends, you just got to hustle the best you can. I’m definitely not perfect and being a mum has humbled me a lot. My biggest tip is not to compare yourself to others and be kind to yourself when you don’t live up to your own expectations or the people around you. As a mum, my favourite thing is making my daughter giggle, theres nothing like a hearty baby giggle to brighten up a crappy day. At work it’s being able to acutally complete jobs from start to finish. At home this is almost impossible with a busy little person around. As an ex-mountie what are the things you miss about home most? The beach! And also the community feel. It’s so nice at home to walk down the street and bump in to people you know. We are beach people, my husband surfs and I love hanging on the beach to relax so not having this is hard in Auckland. When I had Nyla I moved home for a month to the mount while we did some renovations, and I was so overwhlemed by the support of friends and family. It was such an awesome transition into motherhood. You have just recently become a mum – can you explain how you juggle this with work? And how was your recent family holiday? I’ll be honest we are like a traveling circus on holiday at times, my husband will misplace his wallet, I’ll lose my phone, and then find it. Nyla will need a nappy change in the back of the car and in between that we’re both taking turns checking emails. For some people this might sound a bit crazy but its just our natures, we’re a busy family unit. Lucky for us, Nylas personailty is happy-go-lucky so she loves being around the action. As long as we’re all together! At the moment I’m very fortunate to have a lot of family support. My mum babysits for me four days a week so I can keep on top of my business and I’ve split my role up in order to priortise the most important parts of my job in order to keep the wheel turning. Some days Nyla even comes to work with me.

BROOKE TESTONI. Australian style maven, Brooke Testoni, has launched her first ever handbag collection and we honoured to be a New Zealand stockist! Brooke’s new label, Rylan, offers a range of luxuriously handcrafted handbags that combine quality with the fashionista’s inimitable ‘cool girl’ aesthetic.
B
rooke came up with the idea of creating Rylan around two years ago whilst travelling through the U.S. and Europe.“I decided to create a line of handbags because I saw a gap in the market and was passionate about a particular style. I was looking for a luxury quality, classic bag, inspired by the past, with no obvious branding. I also had a clear vision of what this would look like. Unfortunately I didn’t find many I was fond of, especially underneath the $1,000 mark. This was how Rylan was born” says Brooke. The bags are classic, understated and every bit as luxurious as you’d imagine! With effortless appeal we can see them becoming a timeless and treasured accessory. The collection can be shopped instore or online. We had a quick catch up with Brooke on all things fashion! Describe your own personal style: Classic, effortless, vintage inspired and timeless. Your 5 key summer wardrobe pieces are? A light crisp white shirt to tuck into summer denim, a great pair of shades, a classic bikini, a silk summer dress and a tan coloured bag. What does an average day at work for you look like? Each day is completely different, which I love. Firstly, I check my emails and get back to the urgent ones, I then touch base with my production team in the Untied States on new sampling or production. I go over the social calendar and makes sure everything is prepared for the day/night ahead, if not I shoot extra content in the office or outside on location. Lastly my assistant and I pack and get orders ready for pick up by the end of the day. Your beauty essentials include? Rose Hip Oil, SK-II eye cream, Oribe Supershine Moisturising cream for my hair, RMS Magic Luminiser and RMS Buriti Bronzer. Your greatest moment this year is: The launch of the brand, and the overwhelming positive feedback from retailers and media. WWW.SISTERSANDCO.CO.NZ | INSTA: SISTERSSNAPS

nancy zhang S I ST E R S D E S I G N E R We caught up with Nancy, Sisters & Co’s brand designer/part-time model.
S
isters & Co designer, Nancy Zhang, has always wanted to design. When she was a young girl, sge would rather be drawing pictures then out playing. This led her to complete a degree in Creative Industries, majoring in fashion. Her talent stood out and she was a top student and winner in her collection for the prestigious South Island fashion awards. Working at Sisters & Co part-time during her course, Nancy was a star on the floor and director, Rodelle Payne, quickly snapped her up after Nancy finished her studies. This led to Nancy designing Sisters & Co’s owb collection after the stores label had a few years of hiatus. Nancy said: “It’s so exciting to be doing what I love and I am pasisonate about pattern making, creating, and sewing. It’s exciting starting the process from a drawing and seeing it through till the finished product. I am also looking forward to being able to sell it on the floor. But there have definitely also being a lot of challenges, like compromising on my design for cost, changes to construction due to manufacturing constraints, and also designing for a particular market and customer in mind. It is also quite a lengthy process but I have had a great team to help me, Rose helping with logistics and Andrene with her great eye for colour and fabrics. Rodelle has also been amazing and super supportive and I am so greatful that she has given me the opportunity. I can’t wait to see the first collection on the floor!” What inspired the creation of Sisters Label? Our Sisters Label is primarily inspired by our customers. We continuously listen to their feedback and in conjunction with our design team, endeavor to create garments to fulfill their needs. What is your design process? What are the advantages of getting everything made locally? I think it’s great being able to collaborate with stores and factories based in New Zealand. Each capsule starts from planning, researching, drawing and then to choosing fabrics, pattern making, toiling, and getting our fabric cut and finally made locally in New Zealand. After graduating from Toi Ohomai, what is the greatest thing you have learnt in your first year of working in the industry? The greatest thing I have learnt in the fashion industry is the process of how retail and online retail works. There are a lot more details to it than what we can see.

PEOPLE OF FASHION
“Our Sisters Label is primarily inspired by our customers. We continuously listen to their feedback and in conjunction with our design team, endeavor to create garments to fulfill their needs.” How would you describe your own personal style? My personal style changes regularly according to my lifestyle. Sometimes I feel like I have a few personalities living in me in the way I dress. You’ll find me shifting around in my Bassike gears with a pair of sneakers, or in my glam mood mostly on Saturday wearing either a Karen Walker dress or Shona Joy playsuit with my hair sleek back in a ponytail and my current favourite lip liner from Kjaer Weis. What are some of the key trends coming through this season? The classic slip dress is a must have key piece this season. We’ve selected a vintage print in a whiskey and a classic black for this style. It is a style you can play with for many different occasions. Also the elasticated culottes are big this summer, some people may find it too frumpy for their figure but the elastic waistband gives you a definition of a curve on your waist line, make sure to pair it with something either slim or fitted on top for a dreamy look. Don’t be afraid to try something new! Whats the last fashion purchase you made? I actually just purchased a pair of Adidas Originals EQT Racing Adv Shoes online. What does a day of work at Sisters & Co look like for you? My usual work day would be arriving in the office around 8:30am, check my emails, grab my coffee from Coco’s, head to the design room and start my day off either pattern making or sampling away on my sewing machine. What does the future for the Sisters Label look like? How often will we see new designs? Hopefully Sisters label will deliver new capsules 5-6 times throughout the year. We want the Sisters label to be affordable as well as fulfilling our customer’s needs. If you could trade closets with one person it would be: Anna Dello Russo. What’s your favourite Mount Maunganui activity? I am super easy, if it’s a sunny day, I am happy whatever I do as long as I am out soaking up that sunshine!

TOGETHER J O U RN A L “Together Journal offers a fresh take on weddings the kinds of weddings that we and our friends and their friends wanted to have and were seeking inspiration for.”
W
hen did you start Together Journal and how did the idea come about? I launched Together Journal exactly two years ago. I have a fashion marketing and photography background and I felt like the wedding industry in general was quite dated, so it really just came from the simple idea that there was a space for something new and contemporary in the market. Together Journal offers a fresh take on weddings – the kinds of weddings that we and our friends and their friends wanted to have and were seeking inspiration for. I wanted to create something design driven and more fashion orientated than what was already around. Together Journal has now evolved into a weddings, events, and lifestyle magazine. We have a lot of readers (about 30%) who are not getting married. They buy us for our fashion, travel, arts, design, and lifestyle content. And we are now distributed nationwide in Australia and the USA, as well as New Zealand. How do you approach each issue? Where do you find your inspiration? I’m a mix of analytical and creative when it comes to planning each issue. I always think about the content in relation to the different groups and styles of our readers. I try and make sure I am including content for a range of people while still staying true and tight with our brand values and aesthetic. We have an amazing global network of extremely talented contributors who we are constantly sourcing inspiration from, they are a mix of photographers, designers, illustrators, writers, etc. We also gather a lot of inspiration and ideas from our clients. We work with so many dynamic fashion and design brands who are always doing new and exciting things. Instagram is also one of the best places for us to discover new talent, designers, photographers, and artists. Prior to Together Journal you worked as a photographer. Do you still get the chance to shoot weddings? Not so much anymore. I stopped shooting weddings at the start of this year so I
could concentrate 100% on the magazine. I do still shoot a lot of things for the magazine though, each issue you will see several features I have shot. And I have been known to come out of retirement for very special weddings. You must have seen a fair few weddings over the years. Is there any in particular that have stuck with you? This is hard, I’ve had so many amazing clients over the years and have shot over a hundred weddings. You become quite close to some couples and remain friends afterwards which is lovely. But the weddings that stand out most for me are the weddings of close friends. Actually, most of the more memorable ones have been in the Bay! But most stories shouldn’t really be told! If you could have an unlimited budget, what would your dreamwedding day be? Our wedding which was 10 years ago was so much fun and I would not change a thing. But if I had the chance to have a second wedding (still with the same husband of course), I would elope! It would make it more exciting to elope somewhere with just the one you love. I’d go somewhere really interesting with lots of colour and vibrancy like Morocco. I would make sure to hire one of the best photographers around so we could always treasure our memories, and I would have an amazing dress, most likely by Alice Temperley. Then after a romantic holiday I would come back and throw a huge festival style party, which would last all weekend and I’d surprise everyone with the announcement that we were already married. That way I would get the excitement, the travel and adventure, the dress (there might actually be a second one for the party back home), the party and not so much of the stress and nerves of organizing a big wedding day. Do you get any down time between issues? Not during the year, it’s pretty frantic, there always seems to be something that pops up in-between issues and takes up time, like fashion week or travel or the Wild Hearts wedding fairs that we sponsor. But I do get downtime

“It would make it more exciting to elope somewhere with just the one you love. I’d go somewhere really interesting with lots of colour and vibrancy like Morocco.” over Christmas and January when the printer and distributors shut down. This gives me a chance to relax, revive and think of new ideas and goals for the coming year. As well as spend time out of the city at the Mount with friends and family. How will you be spending your Summer holidays? We always pack up and go to our family bach at the Mount! It’s our absolute favourite place to be. It’s very cute, right by the sea and life feels so simple and easy over the summer months. We hardly drive anywhere, we swim in the sea every day and we have lots of friends to catch up with. It’s the perfect way to recharge for the new year. I relocate my office and draw it out as long as possible, normally about 6 to 7 weeks of summer holiday break and working remotely over summer before I have to take the kids back to school. On your Christmas Wish-List? I’m a little bit obsessed with Zoe & Morgan. I have my eye on their Luna and their Zap studs (so hard to choose!). I also love the next range coming from Marle … quite a few of their pieces are on my wish list. And there is an amazing Karen Walker print coming in a few styles that I’m dreaming about. Did I also mention the white ballet top from Miss Crabb? Favourite part of your day? I love my neighborhood, all my stops are walking distance which reminds me of the Mount. After I drop the kids off at daycare and school I walk to my local café, Rosies, and grab a coffee. I then walk through the Rose gardens to work listening to music, normally the XX, and I get myself focused for the day ahead. Quote to live by? “Crazy just might work.” - Greta Kenyon
