elcome to the second edition of Mode, Sisters & Co in-house magazine. In this age of the ‘gram,’ hash tags, snapchats and many other forms of technology used as a way of communicating we wanted to give to you a physical copy of what is inspiring us for the upcoming season. With photos taken in and around the beautiful Mount this is really the essence of what we are about at Sisters & Co. Our favourite trends and key looks have been put together with New Zealand women in mind, fashion for women to feel beautiful and confident in, with a relaxed vibe. Spring brings to us slip dresses and slip-styled camis, loose fitting shirts, soft tones such as baby blues and blush pinks, along with the ‘bed-wear’ inspired fashion in the form of the slipper inspired shoe. Light denim is an absolute must for this seasons wardrobe as are off the shoulder tops, wide leg pants, and white sneakers. Sports luxe is still holding a place in this season, perfect for those longer summer days around the Mount.
Juliette Hogan absolutely out-does herself with her Desert Storm collection inspired by the Californian desert. The wrap dress and linen short jumpsuit are new shapes for the season and absolute favourites. We are also in love with the Deadly Ponies new season collection which celebrates the brands 10-years. ‘Grande Familia’ see us explore the use of brass hardware which adorns key new season styles such as Mr Stitcher, Mr Mini Stitcher and creating a new take on the Mr Fill n Stitch. The latest edition to our Sisterhood is Pair By Sisters, a boutique space that sells beautiful footwear, and handbags. Boasting top local and international shoe designers this is definitely a fabulous new space so check it out next time you are in the mount or head to pairbysisters.co.nz MODE | SS’16

THE DESIGNER
Juliette Hogan We took five minutes to chat with the very talented designer Juliette Hogan.
How did you start Juliette Hogan? Following studying in NY at Parson’s School of Design I set off for a bit of travel to then come home and start my label. That was 13 years ago.
What is your favourite place in the world? I am hugely patriotic, I love NZ, so I would say home. That said travel is such a big part of who I am and there is beauty in every place I have been.
Tell us about the inspiration about your stunning spring/ summer 17 collection? The concept for SS16 was created while I was traveling through the Californian desert. Sandstorm is a print that was inspired by the beautifully tonal sunsets set against the rocky terrain. The Floral Haze print was inspired by the tight bushes that were dotted throughout the vast landscape. Visually, it was such an inspiring trip.
What is your daily source of inspiration? Architecture strong lines, minimalist structures set in wild or unstructured landscapes. I love being within well designed spaces and it’s really defining how I’m designing my clothes.
When you aren’t designing beautiful clothes, what are you doing? I love to travel, I love the outdoors and I love walking. I will often escape down to Queenstown for the air and to be amongst the mountains – the air is medicinal down there. I also love a beautiful dining experience whether it be cooking for friends at home or trying a new restaurant. Describe your own personal style? I would say that I am pared back luxe. I never want to feel over done or like I’m trying too hard but I just love cashmere, sequin and silks so I try to pare back luxe fabrications with a pair of jeans and I’m all about the white sneakers to bring an outfit back.
WWW.SISTERSANDCO.CO.NZ | INSTA: SISTERSSNAPS
What is on your playlist at the moment? Bruce Springstein is top of the list for when I’m at home cooking a meal or entertaining. I also love some laid back Hip Hop for music while I’m at work, Kaytranada is a fave right now. Where are you traveling to next? Yosemite Valley in the States is my next port. I’m loving the States right now. Who are your dream dinner-party guests? I’d love to have Michelle Obama over for dinner, I think that she’s the epitome of cool. She smart and sassy with just the right amount of fun. What could you not live without? My cashmere blanket through winter – it travels with me, it sits on my couch and it keeps me warm when I’m out in the evenings.

BEAUTY CORNER
Summer Edition
Our beautiful Sarah from The Styling Room dishes up the insider beauty tips and tricks for getting that summer grow, looking after your skin from the inside out, and the latest hair trends for SS16.
What hair and beauty trends do we have coming through this SS16? On the runway we are seeing choppy fringes, hair twists and plaits that pull the hair away from the face. For make-up we are seeing the glossy Coca Cola red lip colour used at the Nina Ricci show, to the velvet oxblood stain at Burberry Prorsum with sun-kissed blush tones. What is your daily beauty routine at the moment? Every morning I start my day with a green smoothie! I try to use in season fruits and veggies and top it off with my bestow beauty oil and powder. I also use Janesce skin care and I carry a water bottle with me everywhere. Do you have any tips for getting a summer glow, without laying in the sun for hours? Yes! The Base by Lara Bingle is my go to for a
golden natural tan. They have amazing creams, shimmers and a gorgeous velvet bronzer to keep your skin glowing with that summer complexion all year round. What lipstick colours should we be investing in this season? That perfect nude lipstick, we all need it and love it! Berry lipsticks are also making a huge mark this season so invest in a good tone to suit you. The Pout Lipstick range has gorgeous vibrant tones, I particularly love Melody and Jewel. Any tips of giving dull, dry winter hair a refresh? Always invest in a good shampoo & conditioner that’s specific to your hair-type. Adding in a few highlights or lowlights will give you an instant lift. If you’re just wanting to do this once a year it’s a great idea to do them underneath your parting so you never see the regrowth. Doing a semi toner to enhance your gray or light tones will
help refresh your look. If you feel like treating yourself, a treatment and blow-dry once a week is great! And lastly clip in hair extensions are a good way to go without causing any damage to your hair! On warmer days whats a chic alternative to the ponytail for keeping hair off the face? I love the good ol’ half top knot. This is easily done. Back-comb your top halo section and loosely make a topknot, then add in some pins to keep it in place. Easy, quick and so chic. Does It matter what SPF your face sunscreen is? Is SPF 15 okay? I find that this totally depends on your lifestyle. If your very active outside I always recommend a higher SPF. But for a normal everyday situation, as long as your skincare routine moisturiser contains SPF 15 as well as your primer and foundation then you will be fine - just no sun baking! The base foundation by Lara Bingle is SPF 15. Should you have a SPF moisturiser as well as a regular moisture? I always recommend to use a SPF moisturiser on the areas that will be exposed to the sun for long amounts of time, and as mentioned above to ALWAYS ensure all year round you have SPF 15 in your face moisturiser and foundations. Whats a good way of keeping your hair tame on holiday when there’s no hair driers or straighteners in sight? I find the best way to do this is by adding in serum after a swim and allowing it to dry frizz free. Product and dry shampoo is always a great saviour! Also keeping your hair in plaits or a low bun is always a good option. Any tips for keeping make-up on all day from a swim at the beach to a afternoon drink in the Mount? Before your swim try curling your lashes before you apply your mascara. The Lara Bingle creams by The Base are great - so light and natural. After your swim it’s easy enough to quickly reapply for a refreshen then reapply your coat of mascara. How do we avoid tan lines without going to the naturalist park? The healthiest tan is in a bottle! I personally love The Base by Lara Bingle instant tan mousse and then every third day top it up with the gradual tan moisturising lotion, for that perfect all over body natural tan. Summer foods to keep you healthy and glowing? Eat healthy – salmon and other types of fish are loaded with great oils. Smoothies filled with the Bestow products, berries and greens, walnuts, green tea and proteins! Whats your exercise routine? I do a variety of things from running, weights, RPM, Les Mills classes and yoga. I think its important to keep your body guessing and to move your body everyday for a minimum of 45minutes.

THE LOCAL
Wild One
Why did you start wild one? Wild One was a long lusted over dream for me. Four years ago I had the time of my life backpacking Asia, although unfortunately at the same time I contracted a series of illnesses related to gut health that have plagued me ever since. I suddenly had to take entire food groups out of my diet just to get out of bed in the morning and work a regular week. I had to learn how to make myself well again by replacing food options and along the way I learnt about the horrible truths of a lot of our every day foods. I also found eating out practically impossible. And so the dream was born; I wanted to create a space where everyone could come and enjoy real, wholesome, nourishing foods, without the nasties, no matter your allergies or diet restrictions. Simply delicious food for everyone. Where did you get the name? And why did you choose to start it at the Mount? The name Wild One actually encompasses myself, my past and the café perfectly. I think if you asked any one who knows me well they would agree that my sense of adventure, enthusiasm, excitable nature and general lifestyle would class me as a bit of a wild one. As for the café, we embrace these qualities: creators, dreamers, lovers, adventurers. And our food being plant based and whole-foods is rather wild itself. The Mount was always the plan for me, it seemed like the perfect community of fit and vivacious people. Although I must admit I was not prepared for the volume of caring, supportive and welcoming people in this beautiful tight knit town. Describe your own personal style? Boho meets vintage grunge meets minimalist/wanna be Scandinavian, it’s all rather confusing. WWW.SISTERSANDCO.CO.NZ | INSTA: SISTERSSNAPS
What is your favourite place in the world? Such a tough one! Probably a tiny village called Pai in Northern Thailand tied with anywhere in whimsical Turkey. When you are creating gorgeous food what are you doing? Dreaming, writing, reading, doing yoga, shopping (serious addiction), spending time with loved ones. What is your daily source of inspiration? Ah everything and anything! “We wait, starving for moments of high magic to inspire us, but life is full of common enchantment waiting for our alchemist eyes to notice”. Jacob Nordby. Where are you travelling to next? Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras. Who are your dream dinner-party guests? My beautiful friends whom are scattered all over the world. What is your favourite meal ever? Ah way too hard! Anything Moroccan, Thai or Italian that my body can tolerate. Where is your favourite restaurant? Depends on the country. Possibly a super simple old Italian Pizza joint in Naples. Tell us the best piece of advice anyone has given you? “The difference between who you are and who you want to be is what you do.”
LOCAL CUSTOMER
Helen Fletcher
Tell us about your personal style, and how is it reflected in your home? Calm and Relaxed. I’m quite practical so I’m not a hoarder, if it has no use in my wardrobe or in my home you won’t find it there!
beautiful food, wine, and ambience During the day we are spoilt for choice Central Deli, Love Rosie, Luca, Delicacy, Sidetrack, Elizabeth – the difficulty is in choosing the treat to accompany the coffee!
Where is your favourite place in the world and why? Holiday destinations. My hubby and I live for holidays! I don’t care where it is or what adventure we’re on with our children, as long as it is carefree with no routine or structure.
Tell us what is the best piece of advice you have ever been given? I have a few mantras! Life is about people, the world has enough of everybody else - be who you are. Be a friend not a judge. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Family is everything. Decisions should be based around merit.
Where do you look for inspiration? People watching is so interesting, I love looking at how people express their own individuality, whether it’s on the street or at the beach, anywhere. What music would we expect to see on your playlist right now? Hmmm anything I can dance to, not that I have the opportunity to that often my children shut it down fairly quickly. I love a bit of pop. Where is your next vacation? The snow! Who are your dream dinner-party guests and why? Anyone who is relaxed, interesting, and fun – and likes simple rustic food with lots of wine! What are your favourite wardrobe “cant live without” pieces? Jeans and shoes, I absolutely love beautiful shoes. Where is your favourite place to dine? And Coffee? We really enjoy PostBank, Harbourside, Sommerset Cottage, Flour & Water for WWW.SISTERSANDCO.CO.NZ | INSTA: SISTERSSNAPS
What’s your favourite shop? I still remember the day I found Sisters & Co and I haven’t looked back! Who is your favourite designer? I love fashion and have since I was very young. I’m very supportive of NZ fashion and admire several NZ designers. My favourite design house is Chloe – elegant, feminine and glamorous! I think Parisians Isabel Marant and Vanessa Bruno and NYC’s Ulla Johnson are super talented designers also – ohhh to have them in my wardrobe! Who is your fashion muse? Ms Coco Chanel. What is one thing we don’t know about Helen Fletcher? I once walked into the Prime Ministers office when I was invited into the Beehive for drinks after a long week at the office – I blame my friend who was meant to meet me at the Elevator!! Hopefully he reads this and remembers! Needless to say I’m sure I interrupted important matters of state. And I’m pleased to say the PM did join us after that!

MEET DESIGNER
Amber Gardner With over a decade of experience in the New Zealand fashion industry including designing for Murray Crane and Workshop, Amber has put all this great training into use for the hottest new label in New Zealand - Shjark.
W
ith the shifting tides of the market, and a real desire for a move toward a “less-is-more” approach, Amber is launching Shjark with a Summer 2016-17 collection. It is a modular wardrobe of timeless building blocks, designed for purpose and versatility. With an effortless undone style, yet always of the moment, the Shjark woman is practical, and laid back, attracted to comfort and ease, but also sexy and confident. Classic, clean lines and tailoring will lend sophistication to a collection of elevated basics for all occasions. With French and Japanese influences, there is a chic, pared-back ease to the range that offers a modern woman the elements for her self expression. The label will be stocked exclusively at Sisters & Co in the Bay of Plenty and here is a few Q & A with the designer herself! How did your label come about? I have always had my sights set on having my own brand, and with over a decade of experience as a successful designer for numerous iconic New Zealand labels, the timing was right for me create a brand and company based on my own aesthetics and morals. What do the designs mean to you? Shjark is effortless perfection for the modern woman. Each season, the Shjark collections are designed around the concept of a modular wardrobe of timeless building blocks, designed to be completely of the moment, yet eschewing trends. They are all about balancing the relaxed with the sophisticated; the classic with the modern. They are designed to stay in your wardrobe, and be built on each season. When you aren’t designing beautiful clothes, what are you doing? Music always inspires me, so I try to get to gigs when I can. I love being at home with my partner on Sundays in the sun, playing records with a good drink in hand, a new magazine and my beloved cat on my lap. I clear my head with walks on the beach, summer or WWW.SISTERSANDCO.CO.NZ | INSTA: SISTERSSNAPS
winter. I’m also really into ceramics, and would love to have more time for hobbies like that, but a new business can be quite consuming so downtime is pretty valuable. Describe your own personal style? Like most of us these days, I’m busy, and I need my clothes to take me anywhere. I’m drawn to classic, clean lines, and I like to mix it up with an undone rock’n’roll edge. In one word – Shjark. What is your favourite place in the world? I’ve done a lot of traveling, and I always used to be on a mission in search of the best beach in the world. Then I realised they are right here in New Zealand. I have lots of favorites, but Taputaputa Bay in Northland always stands out for me. What is your daily source of inspiration? My partner is a photographer and artist; he is always inspiring me with his beautiful work. What is on your playlist at the moment? I love a range of music from The Kills, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Queens of the Stone Age to Nick Cave, Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash. I have had Ben Howard on repeat all week. Where are you travelling to next? I’m planning to get back to Japan soon. Shjark is hugely influenced by Japanese style. I source a lot of fabric and shapes from there and their denim industry is amazing. Who are your dream dinner-party guests and what could you not live without? Jimi Hendrix, Nick Cave, Alison Mosshart, and KeithRichards. Chocolate and denim.
Espero que algĂşn dĂa de sol el amor encuentre su camino y vuele. I hope that one sunny day a stronger love finds its path and I fly away.

STAFF STYLE
Angie Hilhorst
Tell us about your personal style, and how it’s reflected in your home? I love a simplistic look when it comes to fashion, that’s the ultimate in sophistication. At home I have a mixture of looks. Downstairs is a bit more beachy and simple and upstairs is has a more French country feel. We brought this town house about three years ago and you just have to work with the character of the home not just necessarily your own style. Would you say that growing up on the farm has affected your personal style? I have always loved to wear jeans and nice knits, I would say it’s always been my signature look. When you’re not at work, where can we find you? Maybe running up the mount or down at my favourite local George cafe. I also walk my dog Fergus down on the beach everyday. Some weekends I’ll be over at our farm in Tokoroa.
Where is your favourite place in the world and why? Italy is my favourite place. I love the style of the architecture, the Italian flair! They are such charismatic people. I haven’t actually been to Italy in for ever but now days I love watching movies or TV programmes that are set there. Where do you look for inspiration? I love flicking through magazines and I have a new addiciton - pinterest! My girls can’t believe it! What music would we expect to see on your playlist right now? I love listening to music and my husband is music mad. Our favourite song at the present is Sound of Silence by Disturbed. Where is your next vacation? We are going to Europe hopefully next year, I need to ask Rodelle for the time off hehe.
You look amazing! What are your beauty and health secrets? I’m pretty simple with my beauty and health routines. I drink a green smoothie everyday and treat myself once a week to a breakie out. For my skin routine I use Janesce skincare cleanser and moisturiser, and I drink plenty of water.
What are your favourite wardrobe “cant live without” pieces? Jeans, I am such a denim girl! Rag & Bone are truly the best ever!!!
Has retail always been a strong passion for you? Yup, I am very passionate about fashion and love beautifully designed clothing. I love styling people and helping them find the perfect outfit.
Tell us what is the best piece of advice you have ever been given? If you can’t stop thinking about it BUY IT!

THE DESIGNER
Liam Bowden
Where did the name Deadly Ponies come from? At University I was pretty much on the go 24/7. I made a pair of cozy slippers, which were made out of goats skin, and I told everyone that it was pony skin and they believed me. I started getting creative and making stickers and signs with the name Deadly Ponies on it. One day I made some zip purses for a local market we had going at Uni. I needed something to attach the prices to so I used my old stickers with the name Deadly Ponies on it. Suddenly that was the brand name and I haven’t been able to shake it since. Was that the markets in Auckland? Yeah, so at University we had a little market thing going on and I started selling stuff there, and at the same time I was freelancing with galleries and stores doing graphic design, and then I started to sell my products to the places I was doing design for. I studied graphic design. Was this something that you always wanted or did it just evolve? I always knew that I wasn’t going to be well managed by other people, so I did have an idea that I would do my own thing. But I didn’t know that it would end up being women’s handbags. I had an interest in furniture too so I was tossing up between furniture and graphic design. Then one of my lectures said within graphic design you can do a lot of stuff so for a lot of my briefs, I ended up making weird cabinets and furniture pieces and then I just fell into handbags. WWW.SISTERSANDCO.CO.NZ | INSTA: SISTERSSNAPS
Is anyone else in your family interested in fashion or working within fashion? My sister used to work for a fashion PR Company, she has a marketing background. For a little while we worked with her PR company, that’s about as far as the fashion gene goes but sometimes I feel that we aren’t actually in fashion anyway, because we make bags not clothing. What industry would you say you are in then? I would say product design. What does a normal day of work look like for you? There are a lot of meetings! Design, production, deliveries, retail! How do you look so young?! What’s your skincare regime? (Steve, Liam’s partner answers this one) He has an entire cabinet that takes up half of the bathroom, its full of Aesop! How many people are behind the Deadly Ponies brand and form your team? There is about 30 of us, 12 are in retail and then the rest are in our head office, which is where we make majority of our product. We have a massive car park that we have converted into our workroom, so half of it is office for marketing and sales etc. The other half is production so we have leathers arriving, bags being cut and all of that.
How long does it take to make one bag? It would take around three days depending on what the bag is. It is a job shared across a few people, someone who cuts it, someone who dies the edges of suede, and someone who puts it all together. They are all made in New Zealand using New Zealand dear skin sourced from the south island. Our leather supplier also supplies Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Prada and Hugo Boss. Where do you see yourself and the brand in 5 years time? We have such a fantastic team around us its allowed us to look forward and plan out for the next 10 years and see where we want to go, which is global. From next month Carla is going to Paris to sell to the international fashion market. Japan is also really strong for us too, so those are our major goals. What are three things you couldn’t live without? My phone, my nutribullet because I forget to eat, and the people around me like Steve and Carla. Where can we find you on a Saturday night? Probably at home, I have to travel so much that having a weekend at home is a bit of a blessing. Favourite food, colour, holiday destination, and whats your star sign? Thai, navy, Thailand and aquarius. MODE | SS’16

THE FLORIST
Julie Duncan We took five minutes to chat with Julie Duncan, our local florist from Myrrh in Mount Maunganui.
Why did you start your business? I’ve always wanted to own a beautiful flower shop – I love the creativity of working with flowers & enhancing peoples moments and memories through flowers.
What is on your playlist at the moment? I’m loving French music at the moment, in particular, ‘Love in Paris’. Where are you travelling to next? Adelaide and Bali – I can’t wait!
Where did you get the name? And why did you choose to start it at the Mount? Myrrh - I love all things rare and expensive! The Mount seemed the natural place for me to open shop - it’s vibrant and beautiful. When you aren’t creating gorgeous flowers what are you doing? Always reading! Describe your own personal style? I am passionate and eclectic - it’s in my home, in my dress sense and in Myrrh. What is your favourite place in the world? It doesn’t get much better than the Mount! What is your daily source of inspiration? Books, books, books & beautiful florist blogs.

What could you not live without? Flowers and my phone. What is your favourite florist? I love the creativity of Cartier Flowers in Newmarket, Auckland. What is your favourite restaurant? We are spoilt at the Mount but I’d have to say ‘Fish Face’ on Maunganui Rd. Tell us the best piece of advice anyone has given you? “back yourself ”.
