Z ANZIBAR This is Zanzibar, its mystique echoing from eras where the spice trade flourished and maze like stone alleys sheltered and concealed mysteries behind its famed carved doors. The famed doors of Stone Town reflect the diversity of Indian and Arabic cultures inherent in Zanzibar’s cultural blends. Immersed in history, the spirit of old Zanzibar remains vibrant, an island of Africa with age-old markets still laden with colorful produce, goods from every corner of the world, and an intense sensory collision of fragrant spices, fresh fish, and pungent meats.

66

Its Jasmine And Frangipani Gardens, Swaying Palms And White Sand Beaches Once Sheltered Palaces Of Arab Traders Made Rich On The Indian Spice Trade, Gold From Mines In The Continent's Far South, And The Thriving Slave Trade. Those Times Are Lost To History, But Zanzibar's Energy And Passions Continue To Ignite The Senses. Escape into the ancient narrow walkways of Stone Town, swarming with tourists and residents dodging past overflowing tourist shops, motor bikes, bicycles and carts. Colorful chaos bursts from all sides, rich hues of paintings with African and local themes, local women in colorful scarves hustling children in school uniforms or miniature jibabs, and bright fabrics fluttering from shop displays and wash lines. Aromas of antiquity fill the air. Rock and dust, street foods and bakeries, old men sipping thick coffee from small cups, market stalls hung with plastic wares, and carts pushed with balancing burlap bags of spices, crates of sodas, baskets of fish. The sounds of Zanzibar are a cultural melding of Arabic Swahili, the singsong of African English and smatterings of Italian, the familiarity of chattering tourists, and the melodic call to prayer from the numerous minarets. Italian remains a popular spoken second or third language, though schools are incorporating English instruction more recently. Visit the former sultan’s palace, Beit el Ajaib, the House of Wonders. Now the national museum, it is a window on the culture and history of the island along with the Old Fort built to defend against the Portuguese and pirates, Livingstone House (he actually did stay here), and the Forodhani Gardens where evenings bring food and entertainment to the park. Zanzibar is a treasure to be savored, alive and awaiting the adventure traveler off the coast of Tanzania. The beauty of Zanzibar’s white sand beaches is not a secret to the numerous Italian tourists who have enjoyed and cultivated this getaway for decades. But this is a welcome discovery to Americans and world travelers who are increasingly flocking to these pristine shores, frequently before or after embarking on a safari trek in the splendor of the grasslands of Tanzania’s Serengeti or neighboring Kenya.

Choosing a destination that meets your needs as a discriminating traveler just became easier.

FRAME TREE

COTTAGES

The resident owners of the boutique Flame Tree Cottages had not originally planned on creating a lovely boutique hotel on the Nungwe coast. Seif and Elizabeth, Zanzibarian and Brit, first built their seaside home. As word spread, their quiet retreat quickly became a magnet for friends and family from abroad, and they began building the guest houses around their beautiful gardens creating FlameTree. Their building project grew to include a bar, restaurant, and swimming pool welcoming families, honeymooners, and travelers seeking peace and tranquility, a yoga retreat, and easy access to the entertainment, water activities, and shopping a short walk away. Flame Tree begins each day with breakfast served to order on your patio. Your excursion may take you to the best snorkeling sites, a haven for starfish of unimaginable color combinations, or further out for diving or deep sea fishing.

This is a hub of activities, including sea kayaking and kite surfing. Lunch and dinner are served seaside and the bar insures refreshments poolside as well. The breathtaking beauty of a Zanzibar sunset, a fiery ball of golden yellow and orange slowly devoured by the deep ocean blues, lingers as the darkness spreads. Yoga at sunset from the rooftop studio is unforgettable magic. Dhows and a variety of small fishing boats skim the still waters, silhouetted against the sky streaked with peach and yellow. The moment when day meets night hangs in the still air as hidden stars blink awake.

Soon music will come alive, dancing and laughter will fill the nearby beach.

The moment when day meets night hangs in the still air as hidden stars blink awake. Soon music will come alive, dancing and laughter will fill the nearby beach. Flame Tree welcomes guests to the nearby turtle sanctuary hidden in a grotto beside the island’s working lighthouse. Here hatchlings are protected until their celebrated February release and a turtle rescue project saves many injured in fishing nets. This site participates in international studies of turtles with a dedication to conserve and protect, teaching locals to preserve this valuable resource and eliminate the trade in turtle shell and meat which decimated the population of older turtles. Along the beach path, the ancient art of dhow building can be observed in the busy seaside workshop. Repairs are made, sails are mended, and children from the nearby school clamor over the boats waiting on the shore much as they have done throughout time. 78

This glimpse into the ancient culture of Zanzibar exists side by side with the modern beauty of Flame Tree where guests enjoy their holiday in relaxed comfort. An excursion to one of the numerous Spice Farms scattered across Zanzibar's interior is a must. From cinnamon bark to the vanilla bean, the red fruit seed that reveals itself as nutmeg, abundant coriander and cloves, experiencing spices at the source is delightful and educational.

Scintillating Seychelles

80

A Garden of Eden beckons from the Indian Ocean, a paradise dazzling with white sand beaches caressed by blissfully blue sparkling waters and verdant green rainforest. The islands offer spectacular underwater treasures, a glimpse of Creole culture, and excursions into a natural arena of rare beauty to be discovered by seekers of romance and relaxed luxury, adventure and yoga calm. The mystique of the Seychelles islands lies in their lush natural beauty, the overwhelming tropical rainforest raucous in its array of greens, a spectrum ranging from intense emeralds to radiant lime that blankets the island from stretches of white sand to serial hillsides with weathered granite faces. A smattering of coral atolls join the chain providing contrast amidst the granite isles. Ripped violently from its original attachment to the coast of India when Earth was still young, it bloomed in isolation for millions of years, unspoiled virgin rainforest uninhabited by humans until the late 1700’s when explorers took note and began cataloging its natural wonders. At that time populations of giant tortoises, sea turtles, and the now extinct saltwater crocodile thrived and over 250 species of birdlife found sanctuary in its scattered islands. The rare black parrot, found only on the island of Praslin, reigns as the national bird and is a thrill to view in its natural habitat. Human encroachment led to the loss of several species, but Seychelles remains a bird lover’s paradise with several endemic species remaining and migrations joining the natives through the year. The preservation of the remaining giant tortoises, the world’s largest population found on the Aldabra atoll, and the green and hawksbill sea turtles, once an endangered target of fishermen, has become a priority for environmentalists worldwide. The active participation of Four Seasons Seychelles resort in partnership with Wise Oceans is contributing to the regrowth and restoration of the coral reefs. The thousands of species of marine life, studied by Jacques Cousteau among others, make this a paradise for snorkelers and divers. Stunning rugged cliffs and striking granite formations emerge from the dense rainforest growth beckoning adventurous hikers and climbers seeking new challenges. The crests of these hills provide spectacular panoramic views and glimpses of the 115 islands in this constellation known as Seychelles. Granite boulders appear to have bounced into the sea, littering the coastline, anchoring coral colonies and sheltering the abundant coastal sea life. Cleared patches and terraced small farms continue the struggle to ward off the conquering forests. This is a truly magical destination meant to be discovered and savored for its natural beauty, its tranquil shores of pristine white sand beaches, its underwater wonders, and its blend of cultures and ethnicities seen in the beautiful faces of its people. With a population of only 90,000 clustered in the small cities and villages, guests sense its special magic immediately.

Byenveni, the Creole greeting welcomes, and the musical language blending French

and elements of African, Arabic and Indian, carries hints of the Caribbean. Seychelles Creole - the language, the food, the music, the people - infuses the islands with a unique diversity. The French imprint remains, defying 150 years of British colonial rule. The economy once thrived on the African slave trade and the trade route to India. Pirates from the Caribbean actually landed in Madagascar and knew these islands as the Portuguese Seven Sisters. Cousin of the string of islands across the south Indian Ocean, Mauritius and Maldives, Seychelles was ultimately named for a French viscount, not for the once bountiful shells carried to its shores as many believe.
