M MODEL DIARIES

RIEL

BEESLEY

M MODEL DIARIES: ARIEL BEESLEY WHEN DID YOU START PLAYING MUSIC? I first started playing music when I was 14 years old. My mom and step dad got me this really rad guitar from chinatown (that I still play to this day) and I took it everywhere with me. My dad taught me my first few chords, and how to read tabs. I had always been writing poetry, and that was the first time I was able to put my words to music. It wasn’t until I started playing ukulele when I was seventeen though that I really found my voice. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC? Whimsical. WHAT HAS INSPIRED YOUR MUSIC AND WRITING THE MOST BEING SUCH A TALENTED ARTIST? I’m inspired by everything around me. The people around me, the things I experience on a day to day and the things i’ve experienced in the past. I think songs should tell a story and really have a message. I hope that when people hear my music they connect and relate to it because when it comes down to it, on a human level, everyone really goes through the same things, same emotions, just in different circumstances. WHEN DID YOU BEGIN YOUR MODELING CAREER? I started modeling about two years ago when I got signed to Wilhelmina. I’d done a couple free-lance jobs, and had been going to open calls. I believe I got rejected by about seventeen agencies before I walked into Wilhelmina and walked out with a contract. I was a poetry major at The New School in manhattan at the time. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER YOUNG GIRLS WANTING TO START OUT IN THE MUSIC AND MODELING INDUSTRY? Honestly, it sounds cliche, but never give up. This goes for all aspects of whatever you want to do, not just modeling and music. When it comes to music, just be honest and write what you feel. Don’t try to write for a certain audience, write for yourself and it will be the most genuine and appeal to people anyway. For modeling, theres really nothing you can do to change your appearance, but if its something you really want, just keep at it. Like I said I was rejected from MANY agencies before I signed. Every agent told me I was too short, or had too many tattoos, or this or that, but the more I got rejected the more it fueled me to prove them wrong. Don’t change for anyone. WHAT IS NEXT FOR YOU? UPCOMING PROJECTS, TOURS, ALBUMS? I signed a development/management deal with Brightman Music, and since then have been in the studio pretty much non-stop. I’ve been meeting with labels and been fortunate enough to work with some extremely talented people, but the most near-future thing you can expect is I will be releasing a single in May :) WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT THE PHOTO-SHOOT? I loved working with such a fun crew and getting to play my songs on set. Its always lovely working with people that clearly really love and care about what they’re doing. The whole thing was focused on being a collaborative art project, which it always should be! WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE LOOK FROM THE PHOTO-SHOOT? Definitely when I got to wear the Rag & Bone suit. I love a good suit. HAVING BEEN ON SO MANY PHOTO SHOOT SETS AND WORKED WITH NUMEROUS MAKEUP ARTISTS. WHAT ARE SOME TIPS YOU’VE TAKEN AWAY AND USE DAILY? To be honest I don’t really wear much makeup when I’m not working, but one thing I’ve picked up is using Smashbox green primer. I don’t wear any foundation, but I’m pretty much the most pale person on earth, so sometimes I can get a bit of a pink complexion. I just use a tiny bit of that green primer and it evens out my skin tone without having to put anything over it. Definitely my go-to.

12

M MODEL DIARIES: ARIEL BEESLEY WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE LIP SHADE? I always love a classic red lip. WHAT FRAGRANCE ARE YOU WEARING RIGHT NOW? Daisy by Marc Jacob. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR OWN FASHION STYLE? It honestly depends on how i’m feeling. Sometimes I wake up and I want to be the girliest person ever and I’ll wear a dress and flowers in my hair- go full on fairy. Other days all I want to wear is black and my leather jacket (I have a pretty substantial collection of them) or a good suit pant. WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED TO WEAR FOR SUMMER? To be completely honest I really prefer winter clothes...I’ve always been that girl trying to pull off a leather jacket in the dead of summer. WHICH FASHION DESIGNERS DO YOU MOST LOVE WEARING? My favorite label is Saint Laurent, but the only thing I own thats actually Saint Laurent is a pair of suit pants that I got at Good Will for $10. I love Good Will. All the old ladies drop off their old designer stuff. The other day I got the cutest dress for 95 cents! It was on sale hahah WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE GO-TO PIECE OF CLOTHING? Definitely my leather jacket that i’ve had since I was six years old. It still fits me! It was massive when I was a kid and now it a perfectly cropped 3 quarter sleeve jacket. I’m a bit of a clothes hoarder. MUST-HAVE ACCESSORIES? I like to keep it simple. I have a few favorite necklaces that I’ll wear, and a ring or two. HANDBAG ESSENTIALS? I wear a black leather backpack that my boyfriend got me from a flea market by our house. HOW DO YOU KEEP IN SHAPE? I just got a bicycle! Thats been really fun. Other than that....I’m not sure, I’m a really big pasta fan. WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? Stay true to you. HOW DID YOU GET DISCOVERED BY YOUR MUSIC MANAGEMENT? When I signed to Wilhelmina, I always had it in my head that I wanted to be a musician. I started bringing my uke to every job I did in the hopes that the photographer would shoot me with it so I would be featured as a musician. Eventually it caught on and I started doing more and more jobs as a musician, as myself. I did a fashion film for NYLON magazine, where they ended up using my tune as the film song. My managers reached out and it just took off from there! NEXT ON THE BUCKET LIST? Ah! I have so many things I wish to accomplish but in the nearest future...i’m going to europe soon and I don’t want to leave without having stayed in Paris. I’ve always wanted to do. LOVING MODELISTE BECAUSE.... I love the people behind the idea, and the idea itself- that its a place for all things: Music, fashion, art, beauty tips. And I’m very grateful to be on the cover! Thank you! XX

W H AT W E L O V E : G BY GABRIELLE www.gbygabrielle.com.au Australian accessories designer Gabrielle Brown is taking the fashion world by storm. Having started down under, been invited to the Emmy Awards Gifting Suites, and now sold worldwide and coveted by A-list celebrities and fashionistas alike, G by Gabrielle pieces are some of the most lust-worthy, style must-have of the season.

M WHAT WE LOVE: G BY GABRIELLE HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START DESIGNING JEWELRY? I have been making and creating since I was a little girl, doing a jewellery course when I was about 13-14yrs old, and then slowly self-teaching as the years went on. It has definitely been a gradual process, only now really focusing on my passion and figuring out what my vision for the brand is and creating goals to achieve it. I would love to be able to share my creativity with children to ensure that their creative spirits are not lost to more traditional ways of teaching. WHAT INSPIRED YOUR LATEST COLLECTION? With winter on the way in Australia, there is a huge shift toward marble and metals, so my latest resin collection has been based around that, and more monotone colour schemes for winter, compared to the bright bold colour pallet of the summer trends. WHAT DID YOU SEE AS THE TOP SUMMER 2015 ACCESSORY TRENDS? Stacking or layering of jewellery is a massive accessories trend for 2015, and one that I love. In my humble opinion, you can never be wearing too many pieces of jewellery. So whether it is stacking multiple fine metal rings, or 3-4 bright bangles, layering and stacking your jewellery creates a great look, and one that I will continue to create long after 2015 has gone! WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR MOST DEFINING SIGNATURE PIECES? G by Gabrielle’s signature piece is the Princess Bangle, and it was born of inspiration from the bangle I had as a little girl. I never took it off. Its the connection to my childhood, where the creativity began and was so unharnesses, there was no fear as a child, and sometimes I think that can get lost as we get older. WHAT INSPIRES YOU IN CREATING SOME OF THE SEASON’S HOTTEST AND MOST TREND-SETTING STYLES? My tag line for G by Gabrielle is ‘Simple, Classic, Bold’ so I always try to ensure I follow those 3 rules. I love colour and through my resin pieces am able to combine some unusual colour combinations that create a bold look for any outfit. I find inspiration through shape and colour in just about any area of my life. Loving nature and the amazing colour pallet it provides, definitely provides inspiration for pieces, but it can also be a simple as flicking through the pages of a magazine and seeing some designs or colours that get my brain working overtime! ARE THERE ANY RULES TO FASHION YOU LIVE BY? I’m not one for fashion fads, and try to stick to my Simple, Classic, Bold motto when it comes to fashion. That’s why I love jewellery and jewellery design, as you are able to transform an outfit many different ways simply by changing your accessories. I definitely think its important for people to dress how they like, fashion is a form of self-expression, and there should be no limits to it!

HOW DO YOU USE SOCIAL MEDIA TO BUILD YOUR BRAND? Social media has been a great way to gain exposure for my products and a great platform for developing my personal brand. It has provided a way of connecting with my customers and followers on a more intimate level, allowing them to feel connected the brand and myself as an individual. BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? Just do it! Back yourself. There is never going to be the right time to follow your dreams, make the decision and just go with it. It might be the right decision, it might not be, but at least you have made the decision and you are moving forward. GREATEST SUCCESS OR ACHIEVEMENT WITH THE BRAND? We had a great achievement introducing our brand to the LA market through the Emmy Award gifting suite last August in LA. It was an amazing experience and great exposure for the brand, and I look forward to continuing relationships in LA to further our presence in the LA market. STYLE ICON? I’m a huge fan of Iris Apfel; she was and still is such a trailblazer when it comes to fashion and style, so unapologetically so! I also love the styles of both Rachel Zoe and Sarah Jessica Parker. Their styles are funky yet still having that class and elegance about them. I wish I had Rachel Zoe’s jewellery collection that is for sure HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE? I try to stick to the three words that I use to describe my jewellery, Simple, Classic, Bold. ( I sound like a broken record!) I like a style that can be amplified with accessories or simplified depending on the occasion. Having said that, I think style is something that evolves over time, thank goodness! Otherwise I would still have a perm and be wearing jumpers (sweaters) with shoulder pads! 3 SUMMER ACCESSORY MUST-HAVES. I love a stack of bangles, whether it is a stack of bold colours of resin or fine metal bangle stacks, more is always less! Teamed with your favourite statement earrings and sunglass you can’t go wrong! LIFE’S THEME SONG AT THE MOMENT? As corny as it sounds I love Britney Spears ‘Work’, its so true, and it gets me pumped and motivated! WHY YOU LOVE MODELISTE MAGAZINE. Modeliste magazine has everything from fashion, art to travel, it’s a constant source of inspiration for creative minds! I especially love it because it highlights the true vision and passion of an amazing lady following her heart, which I think there should be so much more of in this world.

OLIVIA PALERMO’S DREAMY SUMMER BRAID

Redken Styling & Grooming Expert Jenny Balding has the inside scoop on how you can recreate this look at home with just a few simple steps and two essential Redken products. “You need the right combination of textures to achieve this look. It’s whispy and airy at the front, but comes back into an intricate braid, which is very romantic and beautiful. Redken’s wind blown 05 dry finishing spray and braid aid 03 braid defining lotion are the perfect products because they add just the right amount of hold and grip without looking over-product-y,” says Jenny.

1. Start by spraying Redken wind blown 05 dry finishing spray all over the hair, and then apply a nickel-size amount of Redken braid aid 03 braid defining lotion from mid-lengths to ends to add some grip. 2. Divide hair into four equal sections. Take the two middle sections, and cross one on top of the other to make an “x.” 3. While keeping these two middle sections crossed, take the remaining section from the left side, and cross it underneath the sections that are crossed, holding it in between those two sections. 4. Keeping those three sections of hair in place, take the final section of hair from the right side and cross it over the section of hair that was used to create the original “x.” 5. Starting from the other side, cross the outermost strand under the section next to it, and then over the next piece. Repeat this step until you get to the end of your hair and secure with an elastic. 6. Finish with another mist of Redken wind blown 05 dry finishing spray for added hold with a lightweight, airy finish.

alty hair, don’t care. Summer days bring beachy hair waves, S sea spray texture and the chance to insta-glam your sun-kissed locks. Celebrity hair stylist, Joseph Chase shares the simply perfect styles to look hot at the beach. Written by Joseph Chase

There is something romantic about these waves. Done but undone, casual flirty, and they are super easy to achieve. My favorite product to use when creating this look is Bumble and Bumble surf spray. Spritz this product on damp or dry hair, use your hand to scrunch to desired texture, Let air dry and you are now a beach babe. Yes! that simple. Now for those who crave a little more fullness to their look, use a 1 inch curling iron after hair has dried. Curl sporadically and then use your hand to separate pieces and tease at the root for more lift.

For the active gal, this is a great way to keep that hair back while paddle boarding or playing some beach volleyball. Simply pull your textured beach waved hair back loosely in a high or low pony and secure with a elastic or fabric tie. *fabric ties are so much better for the hair causing less breakage and holding your pony soft but strong.

19

M BEAUTE BOX Another great look for the beach are braids. There are a few to choose from but my favorite for this occasion are fishtail braids. After you pull your hair back loosely in a pony, split the hair into two sections. Start braiding by taking a small piece of hair from one section to the other back and forth till you reach the end of the braided pony. Secure with a small elastic then spread the braid with your hands to create a more textured look. this is such a fun alternative to the textured pony.

After all that beach fun, you may want grab a refreshing spritzer at that hip new restaurant with your friends. A braided bun is a sure way to go from casual to elegant. Take your braided pony and twist around the base clockwise until you have established a bun. Bobby pin the bun in place making sure you tuck under the elastic end and securing as well. Use your hands to spread the braid for a fuller bun. Casual to elegant in under 5 minutes.

No matter what look you choose, scarfs are a great way to glam up any style. Perfect for the beach restaurant, or for the top down on the ride there.

HERE COMES THE SUN:

5 BEAUTY PRODUCTS TO SAVE YOUR SKIN THIS SUMMER Written by Daniela Cruz

SUN-WORSHIPPERS, BEACH BABES, AND SALT WATER GODDESSES UNITE. IT’S TIME TO EMBRACE THE SEXY SUMMER MONTHS WITHOUT SPOILING YOUR SKIN. HERE’S HOW:

1. SPF SPF SPF!

1.

You’ve heard it before and you’ll hear it from every skincare expert. Because the sun is the biggest extrinsic aging factor, sun protection is your best weapon against aging. Whether concerned with wrinkles, hyperpigmentation (dark spots), or laxity, not to mention cancer, UV exposure is contributing to our beauty woes. MUST: Broad-spectrum protection against both UV-A and UV-B Every Day, rain or shine with a minimum SPF of 30. Incorporate it in your daily moisturizer and you’re one and done! TRY: PCA Skin Protecting Hydrator Broad Spectrum SPF 30 | $35 | www.pcaskin.com

2. VITAMIN C ANTIOXIDANT SERUM

2.

This powerhouse antioxidant is especially beneficial in the summer when we are exposed to increased UV exposure, but is a must year-round at any age. This antioxidant fightsfree radical damage in the skin, preventing cellular deterioration, brightens skin, reduces inflammation and irritation, and promotes collagen production. TRY: Intraceuticals Vitamin C+3 Booster | $49 | www.intraceuticals.com

3. ADD MOISTURE WITH HYALURONIC ACID

3.

This miracle ingredient can hold 1000 times its molecular weight binding moisture to the skin. This is not a harsh acid as the name implies, but a nourishing hydrator. Found in serums and moisturizers, hyaluronic acid adds moisture without adding oil so it’s perfect for all skin types including oily and acneic. TRY: Hydrafacial Antiox+ | $79.99 | www.hydrafacial.com

4.

4. THOROUGH CLEANSING…DAY AND NIGHT!

We’ve all had those long days or wild nights where we just want to crash! Before you let your head hit the pillow, wash your face. Because our skin repairs itself at night, it’s a must to remove makeup, the daily environmental “gunk”, and remember that SPF? That needs to come off too! Too late and are already in bed? Stash a pack of facial wipes in the nightstand and you’ll wake up to clearer healthy skin. TRY: Clarisonic Cleansing Brush Mia 1 | $99 | www.clarisonic.com *6x-11x more effective than washing with hands alone depending on the model used. “The patented Clarisonic Sonic Cleansing Brush uses a sonic frequency of more than 300 movements per second to deeply cleanse the skin far more effectively, yet more gently, than traditional superficial cleansing or simple rotating brushes.”

5. 22

5. GENTLE EXFOLIATION

Summer is the time to halt intensive exfoliation methods like advanced chemical peels and retinols. These make the skin more photo-sensitive. READ: will make you burn more easily! A gentle enzyme or low percentage AHA like hydrating lactic acid is your go to for radiant skin. Incorporate AHAs in your cleanser for gentle daily skin renewal and use a papaya enzyme weekly as an in-home facial treatment. TRY: Jan Marini Skin Zyme Mask | $30 | www.janmarini.com

Nothing speaks of summer youth more than a great tan! Unfortunately, sun worshipping has its consequences. Modeliste has you covered with the best steps for a perfect sunless tan with the best faux tanners on the market to radiate that sun goddess summer glow! FOLLOW THESE EASY STEPS TO ACHIEVE A LONG LASTING, EVEN AND NATURAL LOOKING TAN.

SIMILAR TO A SUN TAN, YOU NEED TO CREATE A BASE. CREATING A BASE WILL ENSURE YOUR TAN LASTS LONGER. DEPENDING ON HOW PALE YOUR SKIN IS YOU MAY NEED TO VISIT YOUR AIRBRUSH SPRAY TAN STUDIO 2-3 TIMES WITHIN A 7 DAY PERIOD. OPT FOR AN AIRBRUSH SPRAY TAN PERFORMED BY A PROFESSIONAL RATHER THAN ONE PERFORMED BY A MACHINE. LOOK FOR AN AIRBRUSH STUDIO THAT USES VITA LIBERATA, LAVISH, OR XEN TAN SOLUTIONS. THESE ARE YOUR ORGANIC CHOICES AND ARE THE MOST REVOLUTIONARY AND THE BEST ON THE MARKET ENSURING YOUR TAN IS A BEAUTIFUL BROWN, NOT A TYPICAL ORANGE. EXFOLIATE, EXFOLIATE, EXFOLIATE. EXFOLIATING HELPS REMOVE DEAD SKIN ENSURING THE TANNING SOLUTION WILL GO ON EVENLY. OUR FAVORITE EXFOLIATING SCRUB IS XEN TAN FRESH PREP SCRUB. THIS SCRUB IS PACKED FULL OF BIODEGRADE BEADS AND ADJUSTS TO YOUR SKINS NATURAL PH WITHOUT LEAVING AN OIL RESIDUE ALLOWING FOR AN EVEN, LONG LASTING TAN. THE DAY OF YOUR AIRBRUSH APPOINTMENT DO NOT PUT ANY LOTION OR PERFUME ON. THESE ACT AS A BARRIER PREVENTING THE TANNING SOLUTION FROM FULLY PENETRATING RESULTING IN AN UNEVEN TAN AND A FASTER FADE. ONE HOUR AFTER YOUR AIRBRUSH SPRAY TAN, BEGIN YOUR HYDRATION ROUTINE. KEEPING YOUR SKIN WELL HYDRATED WILL PROLONG THE LIFE OF YOUR TAN. THERE ARE TWO WAYS TO MAINTAIN OPTIMAL HYDRATION. HYDRATE FROM WITHIN BY DRINKING LOTS OF WATER THROUGHOUT THE DAY. TRY ADDING 4 OZ OF ALOE VERA JUICE TO YOUR DIET. HYDRATE EXTERNALLY BY USING A MOISTURIZER THROUGHOUT THE DAY SUCH AS TAN TOWEL ON THE GLOW SELF-TANNING BODY MOISTURIZER. NOT ONLY DOES THIS PRODUCT MOISTURIZE WITH JOJOBA, OLIVE AND AVACADO OILS, IT ALSO ACTS AS A SELF-TANNING DAILY BODY MOISTURIZER WHICH DEVELOPS A SUN-KISSED GLOW FOR A YEAR-ROUND RADIANCE. ONCE YOU HAVE CREATED A BASE YOUR SPRAY TAN REGIMEN CAN BE ONCE EVERY 10 - 14 DAYS. FOR AT HOME TOUCH- UPS USE A SELF TANNER. TAN TOWEL TAN TO-GO TOWELETTES ARE EASY TO USE AND FOOL PROOF. PERFECT TO STASH AWAY ON VACATION TOO.

M COUTURE: #THEMODELIST WHAT INSPIRED YOUR LATEST COLLECTION? There is so much creativity behind designing, and usually if I love something I want it on the line. I’m also very inspired day to day by different European fashion and designers. I get a lot of inspiration by watching closely what the young fashionistas are wearing at the moment. We traversed Amboseli National Park with its rich abundance of wildlife at base of Mt. Kilimanjaro making for excellent game viewing opportunities; lions perched with their gaze set attentively as the impalas glide by. I experienced Tsavo West National Park, an idyllic spot to explore its vast monkey population and postcard perfect photo opps of giraffes eating off acacia trees, and journeyed to Tsavo East, the oldest national park in Kenya, famous for its extraordinary elephant encounters. Kenya’s deep cultural roots while offering an incredible array of destinations and customized journeys designed to discover Kenya’s breathtaking beauty and alluring unique natural heritage sites.

With its signature blend of luxury, comfort and service at every step of your journey, Natural World Safaris is the ultimate value and personalization for African Safaris. Our final stop on our Kenyan journey was to the Island of Lamu. Just off the northern coast of Kenya lies the little known island archipelago of Lamu, steeped in history and offering an opportunity for the adventurous traveler to experience with authenticity the timeless wonder of the ancient Swahili culture. The stone town of Lamu is a World Heritage Site founded centuries ago by Arab traders. Steeped in the past, Lamu captures the mystique of the maze-like narrow alley ways, winding through corridors of whitewashed coral stone walls two feet thick, with wooden doors sheltering lush courtyards, the domain of women and children. The waterfront bustles with activity as the traditional dhows mix with small motorboats and the ferry from the mainland and smaller islands. Donkeys are the only transportation on Lamu, claiming the right away, crowding pedestrians and laden with everything from vegetables to bricks, even crates of Cokes. Young boys coax their less than eager rides into a trot along the broad waterfront. Vendors call from bustling storefronts, veiled women cluster, gossiping, shopping, and walking children to and from school. In the center, a town square is the hub of men each afternoon, sitting focused on traditional games of Mancala and Carrom, a version of finger pool originating in India or Egypt eons ago.

M VOYAGES: KENYA The beauty of the archipelago attracts those seeking pristine beach getaways, sunshine and cooling breezes, boat tours with local guides, fishing tours, snorkeling and diving. M VOYAGES: UGANDA MAHOGANY SPRINGS SAFARI LODGE www.mahoganysprings.com

Mahogany Springs (www.mahoganysprings.com) is set in the shade of a magnificent mahogany tree, strong and proud, proclaiming the entrance to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Here lies the gateway to the mountain gorilla habitat sought by adventure seeking trekkers and flocks of birdwatchers with tripods and long lenses seeking a long list of indigenous and migratory birds abounding in this region. Mahogany Springs Safari Lodge, known for its impressive mahogany tree, has 8 lovely chalets overlooking the Munyaga River valley in peaceful serenity beneath the misty Ugandan mountains. Each chalet is uniquely designed and features work of local artisans in support of the surrounding communities. The Lodge is recognized for its warm hospitality and personal service, a central bar and lounge area, and a cozy living area with stone fireplace and library. Relax at the bar, tended by a charming local storyteller who will recount gorilla encounters guaranteed to entertain. Or enjoy the wrap around terrace, capturing the view of the homes and farms in the valley, children racing down the well worn pathways, the pastoral setting of cattle grazing, and the inset waterfall where gorillas have been known to visit for a shower and soak in the pooling water below. Whether you choose terrace dining or the comfort of the dining room which shares the views of valley and mystic mountains beyond, dining at Mahogany Springs is extraordinary with its cosmopolitan presentation and gourmet offerings. Afternoon tea features fresh baked cakes and breakfast options nourish the trekkers for the challenge ahead. One of nature’s most incredible wildlife encounters, the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest Mountain Gorilla Trek promises up close and personal viewing of these gorillas in their habitat as family groups. Like our stay at Mahogany Springs, the gorilla trek has been arranged by our Thousand Hills guide. We gather at the staging area for an orientation and we are grouped according to the families we will be seeking.

Our trek sets off with local guides leading groups of up to 8 trekkers with porters providing necessary support up the steep rainforested hills, on mud slick “trails”, navigating roots and vines, branches and brambles. The challenges presented on our ascent over this difficult mountain terrain tests our resolve. Our eyes are on the prize as we edge upward nearing our gorilla family’s most recent nesting area. Our guide is a young woman with fresh knowledge and enthusiasm as she cheers us up the challenging terrain. She distracts us with a soundbites of information. This UNESCO site is a 124 square mile homeland to half of the remaining mountain gorilla population, 350 at latest count, more than 100 species of mammals including non-habituated chimpanzees, 346 species of birds, and 163 species of trees. And suddenly we are there, a mother and babe in arms are revealed in the shadow of bamboo overhung with vines. Around us the trees and underbrush begin to take on life as juveniles confidently climb and swing around us. Our new challenge is to capture them in motion as cameras click without stop. Our tracker returns to tell us the silverback has left the tribe and has headed up the mountain’s steepest slopes to scout for new foraging and nesting areas. Thankfully we are not going to pursue him, but we will stay for our allotted hour and observe the domestic life of these wondrous beings, watching them forage and feed, frolicking amongst the dense overhead canopy. Sunlight is scarce here on the ground, but flash photography is forbidden. A toddler races by our cluster of trekkers and touches the hand of one of our group. We revel in the moment. This experience is beyond description. It is at once spiritual and grounding to share this time with these mothers and their children, to experience our commonality and the bonds of our common history. The trek has been 7 ½ hours of challenge and ecstacy, and the finale of the day upon our return is the promise of an in-room massage by Mahogany Springs’ professional massage therapist to soothe the aching muscles and revel in the magic of this amazing day! •

M VOYAGES: UGANDA CHOBE SAFARI LODGE www.chobesafarilodge.com awaiting for a one of a kind experience bathing under the stars with the sounds of plunging rapids frothing nearby. Wonderful food and service in the intimacy of the riverside dining with a delightful small pool and comfortably cozy lounge area. We descend to the launch, this time with the promise of crazy fun. A speed boat ride is the prelude to our white water rafting and is an institution in this region. Driven by an eccentric character who delights in spinning and splashing his passengers, veering startlingly close to the shoreline and rapid drop-offs, this is the closest thing to the thrill of an amusement park ride on the water. The unexpected is a highlight of the Ugandan adventure. Prepared for white water adventure, the guides ready the rafts, lifejackets and helmets dispensed, and a paddling orientation ensues. The Nile River has an exciting array of rapids, ranging from 3 to 6 on the rapid scale. We set out, six people to a raft, and paddled. Exciting beyond expectation!

A short flight takes us to the airstrip near Murcheson Falls and we meet our next driver/guide, Davis. We head to the Chobe Safari Lodge, an extraordinary lodge of stone and glass overlooking the Nile River and panoramic vistas of hippo, elephant, warthogs, and crocodile. Stunning three tier cascading swimming pools with poolside spa and fitness center create the resort ambience of this incredible property. Outstanding wildlife viewing can be found without moving from your seat from the comfort of the bar and lounge areas. Elegant dining with the choice of the large terrace overlooking the river or the comfort of indoor seating. The safari tour includes a Murchison Falls game drive and lunch at sister lodge, Paraa. From here we take the launch for the Nile cruise to Devil’s Cauldron waterfall with wildlife sightings along the shore. A return to the Chobe Lodge is to relax into the Five Star luxury of the beautiful rooms, the soaking tub, and pillowy duvet covered beds. Whether you choose a luxury river side tent a sumptuous suite or the standard room, your stay will be wrapped in luxury and your wildlife experience will be memorable.

JINJA WILDWATERS LODGE www.wildwaterslodge.com

Expect the Unexpected! A 3 hour drive will lead us to the most unique lodge experience in Uganda. The only way to reach the lodge is by the motorboat moored and waiting at a remote parking lot. Embarking from there, you are transported to the rocky peninsula jutting into the rapids of the Nile River. Individually designed, the 10 cottages of Wildwaters resemble extraordinary tree houses with lofty ceilings, furnished with rustic beauty, spacious, and open to nature and the sounds of the rapids. On the privacy deck rests a huge copper soaking tub with bubble bath and toiletries

HOTEL HUMURA www.humurauganda.com

A warm welcome by hotel manager, Hannah White, helped make this final Uganda destination especially enjoyable.
