Karrueche Tran optimizes stylish and sexy. However, she also has that very down-toearth persona and an engaging honesty and realness that makes her the girl that quietly, and unassumingly lights up the room. It’s no wonder she has risen quickly to the ranks of celebrity status and is holding her own with a career not only in modeling, but in acting and as an entrepreneur with her latest beauty collection and temporary tatto line. How did you originally get into modeling? I worked at Nordstrom as a personal shopper and then I did a few local modeling gigs and then in 2014 I was officially signed with Wilhelmina models where things really took off running. Who was your fashion idol growing up? Growing up I would probably say Tyra Banks- it’s actually strange, I used to get a lot of comments that I looked like her, I think we have a similar forehead shape. But I would also say Victoria Beckham and how she’s able to be really versatile in her fashion choices from being on the runway and to being a mom. I also love her fashion line. How would you describe your personal style? I like to go with my mood and body shape. I’m very petite and small, so oftentimes I’m wearing crop tops or high waisted bottoms and if I’m the mood, I’ll wear a swing dress or skirt or maybe even some boyfriend jeans so it really depends on my mood. What’s your go-to favorite accessory? I love chokers. I don’t wear too many necklaces or chunky jewelry but I love chokers the best. It adds a little something to an outfit. Current handbag? Lately, I’ve been wearing this Christian Louis Vuitton black, small backpack, I’m one of those girls who puts everything in my purse. I have my phone charger, my selfie light, headphones, my keys maybe 3 or 4 lip glosses so that has been my go-to so I can toss everything in there. Favorite shoes? I love shoes period. My favorite style would be strappy sandals. I think they’re very sexy and you can wear them throughout the year.

Do you have a favorite designer? Alexander Wang- I love his collections, he has a mix of street wear and high fashion which I love because that’s also kind of how I dress too. Very sensible but very detailed.

Funniest or most memorable red carpet moment you've had so far? I recently went to the premier of The Perfect Match and I walked down the red carpet after J-Lo so that was pretty memorable because she’s… J-Lo! and she’s beautiful.

What are some of your favorite things to do outside of work? Probably just chilling, hanging out- I went to target today, which is a very dangerous place. I’m into home shopping, relaxing at home, watching Netflix. Going out to eat with friends. Top 2 things on your bucket list. I really want to go to Vietnam, where my mother and family is from. I want to take her and my grandparents there because they haven’t been back since they left during the war. And I want to go the Maldives, because it looks absolutely beautiful. How did you get into designing swimwear? I have always had a passion for style and design with a particular fancy for lingerie and swimwear. I always imagined style designs for swimwear and had dreams of starting a swimwear line. In 2015 I decided to no longer be a dreamer but a doer. I decided to build on my dreams and I put my swimwear design ideas into production and here we are today. What influenced you most in creating the line? There were many influences but I think the main influence was the lack of swimwear designers in my country and the need to fill a gap between fashion and functionality. How would you describe the Splash girl? The 'Splash' girl is ageless, bold, daring with an innate sense of adventure. Tell us about your collections. The collection is very eclectic. The styles in the collection are varied, there are 2 parts to the collection which tells our story- made in Nigeria, raised in England and taught by the World. The first is bold and daring in its look, vibrant tribal prints which are influenced by my Nigerian heritage, where bold tribal prints called Ankara are worn and used these days for practically all types of creative handwork. We created prints with that African inspiration, we merged these with styles drawn from the west to create the first part of our story, the tribal collection. The second part of our story is the neoprene collection which seamlessly bridges the gap between fashion and functionality, excellent for all types of active water sports for the bold and daring spirit.

What do you think differentiates you the most and makes you so unique in the swimwear industry? The collection is authentic as it is a story lived and that authenticity sets us apart. We have lived the 'tribal' life with all its values in Africa and we have grown and experienced freedom in the west. We are truly an authentic fusion of Africa meets the west. That is what sets us apart. You use color and print in a unique way - how would you describe your designs? Our designs can best be described as fusion fashion, the combination of African inspired prints and western style tailoring creates a unique blend of designs that tells our story. Where do you go for inspiration? I am a very busy person and always on the go. I get inspiration from my environment or should I say the world around me. I could be stuck in traffic, out with friends or sitting in an airport lounge and a design idea would pop into my head, we live in a diverse and ever changing world this can be seen in our design evolution. How would you describe your personal fashion style? My personal style is quite difficult to describe, I like to keep it functional yet trendy and try to always dress to fit the occasion. I would describe my personal style as a combination of classic and bohemian but the quintessential surfer girl always surfaces in all my style choices. 60

People think California is really laid back, and trust us, it is!

Tell us about how you started in jewelry design? We launched the business in October of 2013. We started it for so many reasons, but it was a combination of timing, a love for African trade beads, and something that we felt was missing in the industry. Tell us about the Dickies Girl line. Dickies Girl has expanded to include ultra-soft loungewear, sporty and supportive intimates, soft colorful plaids, and modern cut tanks and graphic t-shirts. What is the inspiration behind the line? We wanted to bring girls on-trend fashion pieces at an affordable price, all with the quality, fit, and heritage you expect from Dickies. What do you see as the biggest fashion trends this Spring? A lot of 70s inspired pieces, especially ones with suede materials and fringe, shoulderexposing pieces, the white work shirt with unique cuts, mule shoes, lingerie-inspired dresses, lightweight denim, and pleated bottom pieces. 70

Inspiration by?

With all the talk about El Niño in the last year, we knew that this Winter was going to be very wet. With that, our goal was to create a collection that could not only handle the colder temperatures of these months, but could also take on the impending downpours that we knew would be drenching our State. Each part of the collection is intended to help answer the question of what to wear on a rainy day.

What’s your go-to piece at the moment?

I am constantly wearing the water-resistant snapbacks right now. I’ve always loved headwear, but never really had an answer for what to wear during heavy rain, so this piece is something that I am particularly fond of. 78

What can we look forward to next with the label?

We haven’t unveiled our Spring collection just yet, but what we can tell you is that we have elevated our fashion tees a whole new level. Again, I can’t say enough about quality of work that our team put into producing these, so I would definitely encourage individuals to save some space in their wardrobes for some Spring-ready tops.

We are always looking to raise the bar with our garments. Whether it is improving the fit, practicality, or another element that gives a garment a fresh perspective, we are constantly striving to exceed expectations. It is almost becomes a competition with ourselves to see how we can create collections that are markedly better. That is the real driving force behind the evolution of California Crown.

What do you love most about fashion? Personally, I love that an individual’s fashion tells a story about that person. What someone wears often reflects that individual’s personality, and with community being one of the pillars of our brand, learning about the people around us through their fashion is honestly enlightening.

It’s hard to say one person who is the ultimate style icon, but one designer I have always respected for his aesthetic and work is Chris Stamp. He was one of the pioneers in monochromatic contemporary street wear, and all of his work is technically sound and very thought out. Just by following any of his or his brand’s social media, it is clear that everything is very calculated as well very clean.

While we have a lot of things in the works right now in terms of upcoming collections and capsules, what we really think people should stay posted for is the events we will be throwing. We kind of took a hiatus from our pop-ups and social outings last year, but we are coming back in full force with events in 2016, all of which we will be unveiling on our social media outlets in a the next couple of months so stay tuned!

Tell us about your latest collection?

Our latest collection was focused on basic items and basic colors. The normcore trend was our main inspiration for this transitional season (pre-spring). We opted for twisted basics such as oversized check shirts and side slitted tops. What is great about the normcore is that it is the perfect way to be right on trend but also completely safe in your purchases for this in between season. There is no risk in buying basic, they are the wardrobe heroes. We also capitalized on bomber jackets and on quilted details which is huge right now. Finally, our accent colours were in the green tones â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Ivy green and Plantation.

Khush is a multi-faceted clothing line. We love to offer sophisticated and elegant statement pieces with our maxis and jumpsuits and at the same time, we offer easy and free-spirited beach boho chic rompers and tunics. Another facet is that much of our line has a sexy edge that can range from very subtle to downright gorgeous. The clothing feels effortless and looks both chic, feminine, and comfortable at the same time. There is always a beautiful flow and flattering drape in a Khush design. We use rayon voil for our prints, which is easy lightweight and super comfy fabric. I do my best to bring to our customers exactly what Khush means – happiness! What have been the greatest factors that influenced the line’s creation? My love for fashion, travel, ocean and nature! I’m fortunate to live in paradise like Hawaii, where my lifestyle and mind are connected to it when designing…Adding to that, being from Brazil, I had the Brazilian flair and the art of Bali (where we manufacture), truly influenced the line.

How would you describe the Khush girl? Youthful women, active, beachy bohemian girl, feminine, traveler, free spirit! Khush represents not just a girl, a woman, but with Mini Jolie by Khush line, a sweet little girl who is a die-hard fashionista in school and on the playground.

Do you have a favorite piece or go-to in the line? Honestly we have so many amazing styles, everyone has their own favorite go-to for a myriad of occasions. One of my favorites go-to is the Sienna Jumpsuit, a perennial favorite in the line. It can be dressed up or down and anyone can wear it. It travels well and is appropriate for all occasions, alone or with the appropriate cover-up. Dress Fiori and Romper Tori are also favorites.They draw along the same style lines with a graceful beaded boatneck neckline that allows you to step easily into the piece. Complementing the higher neckline is a strappy, plunging, open-back that drops deeply down into the lower back. Triple-straps criss-cross across the upper and mid-back. Both pieces hit just above the mid-thigh for a flirty, sexy look. And our Enigma and Rincon Rompers are true loved by our customers! You play a lot with different colors and patterns, how do you conceptualize these different looks or where do you look for inspiration? I find inspiration on every place I travel and on different cultures. The key is to filtrate all the beauty we see around, and turn into beautiful pieces that bring all elements I wish to see in the line. For example: Brazil fascinates me with their fit, colors and life of prints, I feel they incorporate perfectly their culture into their garments, and that’s exciting…I’m ItaloBrazilian citizen, working in Bali, so the mix of all cultures brings me a lot of passion and ideas. When playing with colors and patterns, I usually separate the looks into different inspiring destinations groups…it’s fun! 94

Travel plays a big part in the line, what are your favorite travel destinations? Bali where I love and I get inspired, Kauai where nature is tangible, Rio de Janeiro where I feel home, Florence where everything started studying Fashion. Next on the bucket list? More travel!! Leave the computer at home and get on the plane to explore Croatia and visit Prague, Czech Republic! Any tips for packing on Spring/Summer vacations?
