ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE
As February is upon us, we begin this issue with a mission to place fashion and beauty in a wider context. This has been a unique time in the fashion industry which has seen a global shift to sustainable brands as well as the celebration of new creative talents who work in some of the most celebrated fashion houses. We are also inspired by those who create the imagery that does so much to propel the desirability of fashion, including our Cover star, Jasmine Sanders. The importance of her contribution to both the fashion and beauty industries has been expansive and reflects a woman whose own talent and interests are broad and extend well beyond what she is most renowned for in the industry. Jasmine is known to push the boundaries in her work. She is radiant, artistic, and compelling, along with being incredibly personable, funny and relatable. Jasmine has been instrumental in the shift that is taking place in how our society defines beauty. As we move away from the cookie-cutter model of the past, we portray a broader, more inclusive, universal approach which celebrates diversity and embraces uniqueness. All we need is love. I am filled with gratitude to be the editor of Modeliste at this moment in time – and to work with such an extraordinarily talented team. I also feel a sense of being supported by the steadfast women who continue to exemplify their uniqueness, talents, creativity, and pioneer the way forward.

JASMINE SANDERS Where were you born? Where did you grow up? I was born in Frankenthal, Germany, and I grew up in Columbia, South Carolina. You are known by many and through social media as ‘Golden Barbie’, what is the meaning behind it? When I was younger I had the nickname ‘Goldilocks’ because of my blonde hair. When I got older my friends would say I looked like a Barbie, so when my sister and I were trying to pick screen names in the early days of social media, Golden Barbie stuck! How did you begin your career as a model? I began modeling at 13 years old. I was discovered by Sheilah Dixon from Millie Lewis in Columbia, South Carolina. I did a test shoot and the images were sent to New York! What has been your biggest career highlight? My biggest career highlight would definitely be attending my first Met Gala. I always loved watching how creative everyone gets and it was stunning to see the designs in person! What do you think is the most challenging part of the modeling industry? The modeling industry, like every industry, was definitely challenging this past year. Everyone had to pivot and figure out a way to work in the new “norm.” I hope things get back to normal soon. While I have been on set a few times for work, I can’t wait to be around all my friends in the industry and getting to do what we love to do again in normal times. What is the best thing that happened to you this year? This has really been a tough year for everyone and I’m really thankful that my friends and family have been safe through this trying time.

Top 3 things on your bucket list for 2021? It’s pretty difficult to see what the world will look like next year, but I definitely hope to continue to work, to be on set, to see my family more, and to travel again. What makes you smile the most? Being around my friends and family and seeing other people happy makes me smile the most. I love making other people laugh, smile, feel loved and appreciated. As a woman with a lot of influence through social media platforms and a successful career, how do you hope to influence people most? My hope for everyone is that they embrace themselves and all the parts of them that make them unique. I try to promote individuality and self-acceptance. You have always promoted a healthy lifestyle - what advice can you give for incorporating nutrition into people’s daily routines? A big part of incorporating nutrition into your routine is trying to achieve a lifestyle. Being healthy is a continuous journey so finding foods and activities you genuinely enjoy will help achieve longevity. What is something people would be surprised to know about you? People would be surprised to know that I actually love deep cleaning my own house. Cleaning really helps me distress and calm down when I have anxiety. What are your top 3 beauty hacks you use daily? I like keeping my sheet masks in the refrigerator. I also like to put my eye patches under my sheet masks, and I sometimes like to do my makeup before getting in the shower because I like the steam to set and give a dewy look when I get out, but that’s my personal preference. Favorite beauty product? My favorite beauty product is the Dior Capture Youth Serum. I use it daily and take it everywhere I go! What does empowerment mean to you? Empowerment means knowing that you set a goal and you’re fully equipped with all of the tools necessary to achieve that goal. What inspires you most? I’m always inspired by my friends and family who have supported me on my journey to chase my dreams. I love making them proud.
What advice do you have for someone who aspires to have a successful career like your own? The most important thing when striving for success is to define success for yourself. Really think about your own personal values and goals and work toward the specific definition for yourself. If your life were a song, what would the title be? If my life were a song the title would be ‘All Jokes Aside’ by Jasmine Sanders. What would you like to say to your fans? I hope that everyone is continuing to stay strong during these trying times and try to find ways to release and relax. I know that things are really hard right now, but it’s important to try and find time to relax and find peace and happiness during these trying times. What can people expect to see from you in the year of 2021? In 2021 expect for me to continue being vocal and using my voice to speak on issues that are important to me. What do you love most about Modeliste magazine and why are you excited to be on this Cover? It’s such an honor to be on the cover of Modeliste! I’ve admired the magazine for so long and I’m honored to be in the company of such amazing women who have been on the cover in the past.

LEXI MARS Tell Modeliste readers a bit about yourself. My name is Lexi Mars. I was born and raised in a small town outside of Chicago, IL. I have a little dog named Boomer and a bunny named Scooter. My favorite food is toast with butter. What inspired your career as an influencer? I always knew I didn’t want a corporate job - I wanted to do creative work that inspired others. Taking pretty pictures and posting them online started as a hobby that I loved (and quickly became obsessed with) and the money came later. I never cared about making money from it though. To be honest, I didn’t even know it was a possibility until I was at around 40k followers. @sjanaelise was a huge inspiration for me in the beginning. She played a huge role in the type of content and messages I wanted to put out into the world, and the type of person I wanted to become! What is your favorite part of living in Chicago? Being close to my big Italian family! Seeing the seasons change is also amazing :) I love how beautiful autumn is here! The people are so great too - I’ve lived in a lot of places and I must say that as a whole, there’s nothing like midwest people. If you were to live anywhere else in the world, where would it be and why? That’s easy, on an island. This will probably sound so cheesy,, but I can honestly say that I’ve never felt happier and more at peace than I do when I’m in the water all day long, with no makeup on and just letting my hair be a frizz ball in the humidity. There’s something about it that feels so freeing to me and it truly feels like it’s where I’m meant to be. You have an amazing YouTube channel with a growing number of nearly 13,000 followers - where do you draw your creativity for your channel? Thank you!! Emma Chamberlain was a huge inspiration early on. She made me more at ease with not always looking perfect or feeling like I can only show the most aesthetic parts of my life. I always wanted to have the same type of raw and real vibe in my vlogs that she has. For my clothing hauls, I draw a lot of inspiration from Allegra Shaw. My family is also a huge inspiration for my channel. I’m always thinking of new ways to incorporate them into my videos, whether it’s rating my outfits, giving me makeovers or just roasting me in general haha they’re super critical of me but I always try to take it and make it into something entertaining and comedic :) 114 FEBRUARY 2021 | MODELISTE
What is something people would be surprised to know about you? Before my instagram took off, I accidentally won a scholarship for a stand up comedy program - so for 2 years I was performing every night around Los Angeles, writing bits every day, I even had a manager and everything! I’ve performed at places like the Main Room at the Comedy Store (a venue most comedians only dream of performing at) at the time, I had no idea that it was such a big deal. LOL if I only knew how much of an honor that was, I’d probably pee myself I’d be so nervous. To this day I still cannot believe any of this happened….but yeah, I had a brief career as a stand up comedian! lol How do you decide what images you post to your social media, can you share your creative process with us? Oh gosh…so much time and effort goes into this! Before I shoot, I’ll spend as much time as I need to plan out everything (outfit, location, ect..) so that I can create the best images possible. I look to Pinterest a lot of the time for inspiration and I’ll make a mood board to show to whoever is helping me take the photos (usually my boyfriend). Right now I’m super inspired by the 70s, 90s, school girl style and dreamy cottage core vibes. Any New Year's Resolutions? Definitely to become a better decision maker. Also, more life balance. I tend to overwork myself. I’m a bit of a workaholic, so I really want to make more of an effort to put the phone down and spend quality time with friends and family regularly. What can our readers expect to see from you in 2021? Right now is such a weird time and everything is up in the air, so it’s hard to say. But I’m currently in the works of planning an exciting trip that I’ll be hosting for my followers for summer 2021! I can’t say much else about it yet, so you’ll just have to wait and see :) But other than travel, I plan on incorporating workouts + health a lot more into my Youtube & TikTok content. I dabbled with it a bit during quarantine this year and the response was really positive so I’m going to make sure I share it a lot more in 2021. Top 3 New Year's Bucket List? 1. Learn how to surf! I’d love to spend a month or 2 on an island and just work at it everyday! Maybe I’ll rent a place in Hawaii, who knows :) 2. Attend Paris Fashion week - that might not be very realistic right now though! 3. Collaborate with one of my favorite brands on a clothing collection! Always wanted to do this.

How did you establish your career as an influencer? A lot of my friends were influencers from the time I was 16. Back then I didn’t have any form of social media, but when I finally downloaded and joined Instagram it just came naturally. I really enjoy posting and interacting with people online. What is your favorite part of living in Los Angeles? I was born and raised in Los Angeles so my favorite thing about it is that it feels like home. I think people may be surprised to know that unless I’m working on content for my social media I am literally in sweats and no makeup 24/7. My Instagram portrays me as such a glam girl, but I’m really not. As an influencer, how do you hope to influence people through your platform? I hope to influence people to be more accepting of others and to self love. I also always want to remind people that what we see online isn’t realistic most of the time, including what people see on my page. I always make sure to post my best angle, I don’t always look the way I do online.

Can you share your tips and tricks to keeping healthy & clear skin? Healthy skin starts from within, so I always try and make sure I drink enough water (a gallon a day is always my goal). From there I was my face only once a day, most of the time at night. I use a gentle face cleanser, then follow it up with a serum. I love vitamin C serum for daytime and I rotate my night time serums. Lastly, I apply a rich moisturizer (with SPF for daytime). What can our readers expect to see from you in 2021? Any upcoming projects you can share with us? In 2021 I would like to take part in more collaborations with brands that I am a fan of. I’m also working on a few other things I can’t quite share yet! What would you like to say to your fans? I’d love to tell my fans how much I appreciate their support and hope to continue to make content they enjoy.
