WELCOME to 2022 As we embrace the beginning of 2022, the New Year is always a time when we are reminded of our previous resolutions we set out to keep, as well as to re-imagine and contemplate our new list for the year. If you’re anything like me, you will be dreaming of escaping to the sunshine during these winter months; which is why Modeliste brings you our favorite travel destinations for the year ahead. But escape can take more than one form, whether through art, literature, theater, film, fashion, beauty or other cultural pursuits. We can always find ways to be inspired. After all, conversation is at the heart of Modeliste, linking the people who create and inhabit the magazine with our community of readers. That’s why we hope that our contents give a sense of a woman’s inner life, as well as of the way she interacts with the outside world. Take Paula Abdul, Modeliste’s latest cover star, who emerges as a true iconic and intriguing voice and someone who has re-imagined, re-defined and reinvented herself throughout her highly successful career. Her playful persona is genuine, her creativity knows no boundaries and her dance moves are unmatched. Paula is of legendary status. hat has been keeping you busy these days? I’m grateful that I had time to take a few breaks, and I’ve gotten to spend some much-needed time with my family and friends. Of course, my schedule quickly changed so I’ve been taking several creative meetings. I’m looking forward to more television appearances and exciting opportunities to perform! Are you working on any exciting projects you can share? Absolutely! Directing and producing television is something I've always been determined to do! It was so exhilarating to create my show at the Flamingo during my Las Vegas residency. I really got to get creative and play with a lot of fun, new ideas and the audience really loved it! Given the great response I had during my residency, I’m fired up about some exciting new projects where I have an opportunity to direct and produce!

What is your most memorable moment in your career so far? I’m grateful and blessed to have had so many wonderful moments during my career. One of the most recent is having a Las Vegas Residency at the Flamingo Hotel since it has always been one of my biggest dreams... and it finally came true! Every performance during my residency was a true career highlight for me. During my show there was an electric, glitzy, Vegas-style number we performed that I really looked forward to every night. It puts a smile on my face just thinking about it. Not to mention that I’m still basking in the glow of having performed in LAS VEGAS, the Entertainment Capital of the World! I am still in awe of the fact that people who come to my show have traveled from so many places to see me, and I couldn’t wait to see them! If your life had a theme song, what would it be? Permission to Dance by BTS
What are the top 3 songs on your playlist at the moment? “Don’t Start Now” by Dua Lipa “One by One” by Diplo “On” by BTS What was your favorite part about being the head choreographer for the Lakers? My favorite part was being able to transform how cheerleaders are perceived--to get rid of the pom-poms and to make us more of a dance team! In what ways do you believe that role shaped your career? So many opportunities came from my role as a Laker Girl. One of the most memorable was when the Jacksons snuck in to see me do a rendition of the Michael Jackson “Beat It” video! They approached me, said that they loved what I’d done, and asked me to choreograph their “Victory Tour!” I got started with the Laker Girls as a dancer and stayed as a choreographer all the way through my first No. 1 single. It was such an honor and a pivotal moment to come back the year after that and sell out three nights at The Forum.
How did you begin your singing career? My singing career began in my parents’ living room, between the TV set and the coffee table! Some of my fondest memories are performing for my family. It was so natural to me put on shows for them…I thought everyone did that! Dancing, singing...I loved entertaining my family and how happy they looked. The fact that they were enjoying it made me love it even more. I also performed for Michael Bolton. He was my babysitter at the time! I just loved dancing & singing so much; I always wanted to share it. What was your first thought when you were discovered by the Jackson's? First thought: “YOU guys snuck in to see ME dance? Shouldn’t it be the other way around???” You can imagine how shocked I was when the Jacksons snuck in to see me do a rendition of the Michael Jackson “Beat It” video! They approached me, said that they loved what I’d done, and asked me to choreograph their “Victory Tour!” What was your most memorable performance or concert moment? My 2019 Billboard Music Awards performance is such a special memory because at that point, I hadn't performed on an awards show since I opened for the American Music Awards 29 years before!!! I'm still excited and thrilled about that entire evening. My performance was truly a labor of love, enthusiasm and energized rehearsals! What was your favorite part of working on American Idol? My favorite part of working on American Idol was knowing in my gut that this show was going to change lives. I had the opportunity to witness it up close. I’d be able to stand at the gateway to the American Dream and watch daring, passionate, blossoming singers make the ultimate entrance. Finally, the American Dream had the spotlight and it had our undivided attention—EVERYONE was watching. I couldn’t wait to be a part of it.
It was also incredible to watch people open themselves up to genres they normally wouldn’t even consider. Not to mention the fact that on American Idol, an artist didn’t need to have a song playing on the radio to be heard! It’s been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life to have been a part of television history. I feel blessed to have played a role in giving some truly awesome singers a start--artists who otherwise may not have had an opportunity to be seen. That in itself is humbling. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of it? What's something people would be surprised to know about you? https://youtu.be/DwjFBgy6OyA My first job was as a dancing tampon!!!! How do you find ways to balance your personal life and career? I find balance by making time to slow down and to PAUSE. I set it as a “can’t reschedule” appointment in my calendar. That way, it’s still me in charge of my schedule and not the other way around. Even if it’s just for just five minutes - no matter how rushed and uncomfortable it might feel - I give myself a moment! I’ll meditate, call a friend or a family member to say “Hi!” or take my dogs for a walk. Life is about savoring the present and sharing experiences, not about getting from one appointment to the next in record time! I don’t even want to think about what my life would be like if I didn’t stop at some point during my day to connect with myself, or with my friends and family! It’s grounding. It keeps me calm, fills my heart and energizes me in a peaceful way. What are three items you cannot live without? Sunscreen--I never leave the house without sunscreen. MAC LipGlass in “Prrr,” and any Serge Lutens blush. Staple piece in your wardrobe? My black YSL bag. It’s such a classic and I feel so feminine carrying it. If you could raid anyone's closet, who would it be? Salma Hayek! What is your favorite Fall trend? I like the bright, micro-minis and dresses! Who is your biggest role model? My sister, Wendy. She’s a breast cancer survivor and an example of living and persevering in the face of adversity. Life doesn't stop when people get sick, and my beautiful, precious sister took it all in stride. She is radiant. She's the inspiration for my Avon "Check Yourself" video.
Best piece of advice you've ever received? The best piece of advice I’ve ever received is to always be grateful. I’ve learned from my career that if you walk in gratitude miracles can happen. I am so grateful for all the opportunities and experiences I’ve had, and am still having, in my life. That includes reinvention. I've always kept an open mind when it comes to who I am as an artist. I am grateful for all the areas of my creativity, and I give myself permission to express and challenge myself creatively. That's what has allowed me to continue to reinvent myself. Although dance is my first love, I've never seen myself as solely being a dancer. I think that's the gift of every artist and creative person. What does the perfect day off look like to you? A perfect day off would include me sleeping in! I’d definitely meditate, stretch, and have a fried egg sandwich and a green tea latte. Of course at some point, I’d definitely dance and play with my dogs. I’d probably spend the rest of the day at a barbecue with friends and family (I’d bring the salmon!) Romantic Comedy or Thriller? Thriller! The more plot twists the better! Singing or Dancing? Can’t I have both? I’ll choose dancing, since it’s my first passion.
What would you like to say to your fans? Get a HUGE vision and stay in touch with it! Don’t just dream big, dream ENORMOUS! I always want people to ACTIVELY pursue their dreams, no matter what their age, height, weight, gender, nationality or sexual orientation! What do you love most about Modeliste magazine? I love your fashion features! It’s always exciting to see all the new trends of the season, and I usually go straight to “Labels We Love” to get a more in-depth look.

In 3 words, how would you describe Leonor Aispuro Private Collection? Diaphanous, Magical, and Inclusive. I love using flowing fabrics with structural elements and ethereal imagery with classic designs. My collections are made with everyone in mind and my sizing is genderless and flexible. What makes Leonor Aispuro Private Collection so unique in the fashion industry? My design process and aesthetic is unique because I draw on inspiration from my culture and upbringing. I am fascinated by my heritage and the traditions I have been taught, and I use my art to delve deeper into my own culture. My collections reflect my evolution as a Mexican artistic designer. When working in NYC, I made connections with other designers that had excellent insight into the industry and the global effects of ‘fast fashion’. I learned about sustainable design and that, in addition to my introduction to sewing with my family, has shaped how I choose textiles, create designs and produce my pieces. I think it’s important to design at a pace that allows the creation of quality products without compromising creativity. It’s a slower pace than what we are used to but I believe it is, for that reason, that people wearing my designs describe it as “feeling like they are wearing a piece of art.” Can you tell us how the label was created? The story behind the line? My first lessons were in my youth, watching my mother and sisters create these beautiful garments. I would pick out outfits from sewing books and I would see my mother effortlessly drafting out patterns out of newspaper and stay up sewing late into the night and when I would wake up she had the creations, in my fabric of choice, ready for me to wear. This kind of creativity and artistry has been a part of my every day life. I also have a profound memory of watching my aunt, who is disabled and could not speak, sewing on an old singer machine.
How would you describe your latest collection? I am excited to be designing my own textiles and I am creating a new capsule collection of some more avante-garde designs, as well as carrying forward some classic shapes, reimagined. I like to experiment with fabrics, textures, and structures and this collection reflects my design evolution. What do you see as the top 3 fashion trends of the Winter/Holiday season? Anything goes. Be true to yourself and dress for yourself. I like to be comfortable and wear clothing that makes me feel confident. I am sticking to a classic neutral palate but also mixing in pops of color throughout. I also think shopping small brands every season is very much in style. What do you love most about the holidays? I love making (and eating) tamales, buñuelos, pozole and menudo with my family, and just celebrating a holiday that is very important to them. We usually eat, sing and dance, as well as open present at midnight on Christmas Eve. Any upcoming projects we can be on the lookout for? I am currently selling my collection at Phoenix General located in Phoenix, Arizona and I will be releasing my new collection early next year! Why will we love your line? My designs are art that can make you feel the love and passion I create with. Every piece, from the textiles to production is chosen and created by me, with all the history my family has given me. It is sustainable, inclusive and challenges ideas of how and when to wear certain fabrics and how to create beautiful silhouettes with those fabrics.
I was always so fascinated by the way the machine looked and worked. It made me realize that sewing and design is an art and that art can be used as a way to communicate. I began my formal education in design at age 17 and later moved to NYC and attended the Fashion Institute of Technology for Sustainable Design. During that time, my cousin and I worked on a clothing line and I eventually created what is now Leonor Aispuro Private Collection. Where do you draw your inspiration when creating your collections? I can find inspiration pretty much in anything. I especially am inspired by nature, my Mexican culture as well as vintage fashion construction and designs.

The Resort Season has always been one of the most intriguing as it spans months and aesthetics. How do you hope to influence your audience through your social media platform? I just hope to inspire people to try new looks and be themselves. In what ways do you engage with your followers? I always engage with my followers in messages. We always talk about makeup, fashion, life, really anything! What are your goals for the new year and how will you implement them? My goals for the new year would be to keep growing, keep connecting with new people and start to consider my own brand one day! What's your favorite beauty trend? My favorite beauty trend is hands down dewy makeup. Go to outfit for brunch with the girls? My go-to outfit for brunch with the girls would be a sleek hairstyle, a matching set, and some sneakers. What are you looking forward to most in 2022? What I am looking forward to most in 2022 are positive changes for everyone. Everyone being able to be happy and healthy and take the time we need for ourselves. Having fun in life, not thinking too hard. Any exciting projects you can share? Yes! Stay tuned! You are a Social Media Star! How did you develop the platform you have today? I honestly did not set out to start a platform, I just always posted what I loved, and I had fun, people gravitated towards what I was doing eventually. This platform really came from me being creative and not trying to do anything but have fun. What's something people would be surprised to know about you? I’m sure people would be surprised to know that I live in Pocatello Idaho haha. Even people that do know are still surprised. I am just honestly a regular girl, I just like to be home and be with my family. What would you like to say to your fans? I would just like to say thank you for supporting me. Thank you for always messaging me, checking on me making sure I’m okay, and thank you for being genuine to me!

How do you hope to influence your audience through your social media platform? I always try to keep things real and natural. In my opinion, there is no better way to influence than making your audience aware that life is not always "perfect" (far from it!) and that it is totally fine not to always feel and look our best. In what ways do you engage with your followers? I dedicate one day a week -usually Fridays- to get back to the messages I miss during the week. I have actually made great friends with some of the followers that have been with me on this journey for such a long time and I love hearing about them and talking to them about life and other things I do not always share on social media. What are your goals for the new year and how will you implement them? Honestly, this new year coming I have not set any new goals! There have been so many changes this past year in my life that I am still trying to adjust to them all while working, being a mum and keeping with life! Hopefully as soon as I settle I can start thinking of new achievements. One step at a time! What's your favorite beauty trend? Thick, natural looking brows may be my forever favorite beauty trend! Go to outfit for brunch with the girls? Jeans and a white t-shirt with gold complements or a mini dress and cowboy boots! What are you looking forward to most in 2022? It has been a tough year for me where I have lost people so all I ask in 2022 is for life to get back to the most "normal" it can be these days and to keep celebrating life with my loved ones. Any exciting projects you can share? Something real big that is taking a great part of my time but I cannot share anything just yet! You are a Social Media Star! How did you develop the platform you have today? I started blogging 13 years ago, with a traditional blog that started growing massively and super fast. Then Instagram happened after and ever since it has been a challenge with ups and downs but I would say the secret to growing a loyal audience is always being you and sticking to your principles and style, whatever they are. What's something people would be surprised to know about you? I am a mega handy woman! I can lay floors and even do plumbing! What would you like to say to your fans?
